Came here on my break for a quick meal and ended up staying and eating in the bakery. The atmosphere is relaxing, the staff is so nice, the chef brought me my sandwich fresh made, and of course the food was excellent. Great place for a simple sandwich lunch. Second year in a row that Nana Fi's made for us a Scandinavian marzipan cake known as "Princess Cake". No other bakery in the area would make it for us. Year one the baker actually researched it online so that our expectations were met. This year it was even better--a layer of white cake topped with a thin coating of red raspberry jam and vanilla pastry cream, another two layers of cake filled with whipped cream, and finally a dome of whipped cream covered with a fairly thick draped layer of light-green tinted marzipan. The cake was then accented with white frosting roses. Although we aren't fond of the taste of the accent flowers everything else tasted wonderful. It was ready exactly when promised. They took my order and payment and brought the food to our table, but they never checked on us again or cleared the plates (that we had stacked in the center of our table). I'm fact, I returned some of our dishes by myself. Also, I ordered turkey sandwiches but why can't you heat it for me, Nana Fi?? Pregnant women are supposed to have the meat in their sandwiches hot enough to kill any potential bacteria. Don't bother paying $1.00 extra for avocado on your sandwich--they're only going to spread it on criminally thin, like lightly buttered bread. My kds enjoyed their turkey sandwiches. I was kind of iffy about trying this place, because it didn't exactly wow me as a first impression, but I'm glad I did. It is a clean establishment with fridges of fresh baked goods, I was so excited. I was also excited to see that they serve stumptown coffee which scores major points in my book. I decided to go with the majority of the reviewers here and order the iced hazelnut latte which many raved about even though hazelnut and I hardly get along. I also ordered two cream puffs. Ordered a Turkey with Swiss with Lettuce and tomato sandwich for lunch today. The first bite I took I got a mouth full of sand which tells me that the lettuce was not rinsed out and the sandwich had no cheese. The girl at the counter was apologetic took the sandwich back and had a new sandwich made. However this time the same lettuce was washed and put back on my sandwich, the cheese was added but it was brought to me dripping with water from the just washed lettuce.... EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED!!! We frequent Scratch Bakery for business meetings etc and it usually is a good experience. I took the dripping lettuce out of the sandwich and ate it as I was starving. Ordered and paid for a sandwich order to be picked up the next morning. Upon arrival, they couldn't find the order on the computer and the sandwiches weren't made yet. After much delay and runaround, the manager finally said the order couldn't be located because it had been paid for the prior day. After waiting another 15 minutes the order was ready. The quality of the sandwiches was so-so....the bread & veggies were nice and fresh but the turkey & cheese could have been purchased from the packaged meats & cheeses in the grocery store....not exciting. Sad to say this but the entire experience left me wanting to never return. My friend and I went thinking it would be a nice change. Both of us ended up having stomach aches. He ordered a French dip that was just barely ok with the thinnest slices of cheese that he didn't believe that there was any cheese. I tried ordering a signature salad of Nana Fi's but was told that it was discontinued. Then why is it still listed? So I ordered a breakfast item which was turkey sausage and eggs with Havarti cheese on an English muffin along with a hazelnut macchiato. My sandwich was bland the best part was the English muffin which is sad to say. The sausage was lack luster. The Hazelnut Macchiato was brought to me as a Carmel Macchiato, which was tasty but the wrong drink. Then we tried a piece of carrot cake and a piece of marbled mocha cake. The marbled mocha didn't taste like there was any mocha at all, and the carrot cake was disgusting. Two layers of carrot cake and one of spice cake....the two carrot cake layers tasted like they were undercooked. Not sure why they put a spice cake layer. But the worst by far was the icing. The beautiful looking cream cheese frosting was disgusting... It looked like, tasted like, and acted like it had gelatin mixed into it. I literally pulled off the the layers of cake and giggled it like it's was a gelatin giggler...it did nothing but make me sick to my stomach as well as there was a film that the cakes left in our mouths....yuck. This place is delicious!! Right down the road from our apartment my boyfriend and I decided to check it out for breakfast. We both got English muffin egg sandwiches, mine with bacon and his with sausage, and a cinnamon roll to share. They warned the cinnamon roll and it was AMAZING. They have a maple icing on top that is so good. Both of our sandwiches were also super good. I normally throw salt on any egg I eat, just because I love salt, but this sandwich didn't even need it. A decent amount of real bacon, not some that comes pre cooked and is kept in a warmer, and the English muffins were legit. We will definitely be repeat customers! read more
