I'll start with the positives. It's the cutest little rustic looking place! Most of the staff were friendly and the place was super clean, including the bathrooms. Now the negatives, the food! This was my first time there and it was for a work meet up. I got a burger and fries. The fries were decent and the burger was just ok, nothing special about it. My friend got a steak rare and mashed potatoes. After sending it back when it came out well done, it returned medium, and so struggled to eat it and she said the mashed potatoes weren't that great. My other colleague got a Buddha bowl and said the rice was cold in parts and hard like it tasted old. So she didn't eat all of her food either. I personally wouldn't ever go back because it's not worth the price to get subpar food. read more

I have been wanting to check this place out for a while now so we decided to eat there Friday night. The vibe is definitely chill and the restaurant itself is relaxing and laid back. You have the option to eat indoors or out and we chose indoors just because it was less busy. The staff was attentive and our waitress Jordan was very nice. There was another server who's "fruit of the loom" undies were showing the entire time and him and his baby yoda mask just looked a mess. That is unfortunate because hygiene is kind of a thing you want to be cared about from a server (or anyone really). We started with the smoked pimento cheese wontons. They were not really anything to get excited about. They were super lacking in flavor and I was bummed because they had potential for sure. For dinner we had the shrimp and grits. The menu said it was tempura shrimp but it was definitely regular breading and not tempura. The grits had zero flavor and I didn't even taste jalapeño or ginger at all. I asked for salt and pepper (which I never do) but it needed something. The shrimp itself was heavily breaded and overcooked. We also had the sesame salmon. The salmon tasted a little fishy so I'm not sure it was fresh or frozen. The risotto was very sweet and the onions in the risotto were very tasty. Not too busy for lunch on a Monday. The restaurant has a southern charm, lots to look at in the dining area plus a shaded outdoor seating area. Asian Salmond Salad was dry, even with the vinaigrette. Needs more hefty chopped vegetables and less spinach, like cucumber or peppers. Accoutrements were so finely chopped they didn't register in texture or flavor. A ginger dressing would be my preference. Everything was fresh but not very exciting... or Asian! Got to try the chicken sandwich and potato salad, they were both really good and generously portioned. The collards were too bacon forward for everyone and also swimming in grease. I'm honestly really surprised that this place gets the rating it gets. It's simply not that great. The server that waited on us was very nice but that was the only thing that was good about the visit and the only reason the restaurant gets 2 stars instead of 1. The food feels like they are trying to fuse southern and Asian together and it simply doesn't work. The flavors don't mesh, except maybe to the fly that kept buzzing around our table. The deviled egg appetizer that was recommended had shrimp that had been sitting for what tasted like days and was rubbery. The shrimp and grits were lukewarm at best, certainly not hot. In addition, we were seated close to the entrance and at one point the hostess and one of the servers started wrestling at the entrance to the dining room. Really? Y'all they get 5 stars. For one this is a hidden gem. If you don't live in Apex, you may or may not have heard of it. It's been here for 3 years and I'm embarrassed to say I've never heard of it. But I'm glad I did. There is another location in Cary. Never been but will try. Anyway, prior to coming I scoped the menu to decide what I'd get upon arrival. So I figured just the chicken and pancake from the brunch menu. I sat at the bar because of course there was a wait and hey, I was alone. But after being seated, the bar tender gives me not only the brunch menu, but the regular menu as well... which included the Fried green tomatoes I'd been eyeing previously. So it all worked out. The fried green tomatoes were out of this world. I would hold off on the cream sauce and request more jam, but other than that amazing! I had a pineapple mimosa but I almost didn't get it because the drink menu and brunch drink menu, it ALL looked good. Needless to say, I'll probably be getting an Uber next time I got the chicken and pancake. I didn't know what to expect but it was different, served in a skillet. With berries. Strawberries and blueberries my fave. And the chicken, it was fried with the Love of God. I'm not sure what seasoning it was or what oil they used but it was probably by far the best I've had in a while. I got breakfast potatoes as well which were mixed with onions and peppers. Amazing just the same. Then the final drink, the wolfsbane potion... and I HATE vodka. But! . Yep! I'll definitely be back! The parties on both sides of me ordered different items as well. I have eaten at this restaurant a few times in the past and always have loved the food that they had there. So it was very shocking when my most recent experience left me lacking a good review. My husband and I went here in the early afternoon to get a couple of drinks and have lunch. I ordered one of their house specialty drinks, the Loaded Bloody Mary which I have had previously and loved. I was sadly disappointed with this one. The candied bacon on top of it was burnt. The fried green tomato and tempura shrimp were both cold and the breading on the outside was falling off. We were having a hard time deciding what we wanted to eat that day so we opted to split a brunch item for starters and got the summer toast. This entrée is grilled sour bread with avocado, with feta cheese, nuts, and a balsamic drizzle, which is served with as side of mixed fruit. Our waitress seem to have disappeared about the time the food was brought out, so it wasn't very easy to complain and send the food back. The menu stated this was supposed to have avocado on it, and there was barely even a millimeter of a spread of avocado across the toast. This, of course made the bread itself very dry when you paired it with feta cheese, and barely any balsamic. We eventually gave up waiting for our waitress to show back up and decided to go ahead and start eating it. The fruit was good, that's about the only positive thing I can say about that dish. We were going to order more food, but felt that we would continue to be disappointed with our meal there if we did. We've been to Scratch Kitchen in Apex three times now. First time was great. The food hot, fresh and delicious. The Bibimbap bowl was especially memorable. The second time was for brunch and it was a complete and total letdown. The crème brûlée French toast was nothing more than a dry hunk of bread served in a nasty dirty skillet that desperately needed to be sand blasted to get clean. This wasn't the kind of cast iron patina your grandmothers skillet has, oh no. Tonight's third and last visit was the last bad meal I will pay $97 for. A salmon filet so over cooked that it could be used as a hockey puck. Risotto so dry it was more desiccant than food. I should have taken pictures but frustration stopped me. They did remake the salmon but by then, the rest of my dinner party had stopped eating (I'll add, without finishing). I can only conclude the first visit was the fluke. Not the bad ones. read more

We have been to Scratch for lunch, brunch and dinner, and we keep coming back for the lovely atmosphere, the great service, and (with a caveat) the menu. You really need to like spicy food in order to fully take advantage of Scratch, because the vast majority of the food is, well, SPICY. Lots of things made with Sriracha, hot sauce, wasabi, etc...there has been more than one occasion where I have had to send something back because it was delicious but just too hot spice-wise to eat. On the plus side, the cocktails and desserts are out of this world, and the staff is always super friendly. Scratch does not take reservations, so be prepared for a wait (especially on weekends), although if you come early sometimes you can grab a spot at the bar. Parking is free in the lot out back, although again it can be hard to get a place during the weekends. read more

Second time visiting Scratch, and I absolutely love their drinks. They are not only strong, but also taste delicious, and are reasonably priced. I had the shrub tiki today which has a great pina colada mixed with earthy tones. I also had the Allison's Peach Tea recommended by the bartender and it was absolutely great. Like an alcoholic sweet tea. The atmosphere at Scratch is also great. They bring together a modern combined with a ranch/barn look. Also have plenty of drink options and like how the bar is set up. Dinner was pretty busy but you can sit at the bar which is pretty nice. The food was decent as well but I think this is where it could have been slightly better. Had the General Tsaos Cauliflower the first time and it was just way to sweet for my liking. Will have to give the other options another try Overall great experience and would recommend, especially for the drinks and friendly atmosphere. read more

Very convenient to get ti, ample parking, ample seating, we only waited about 15 mins on a Fri night around 8. Kids menu has great options, pretty big portion. The Mac and cheese is delicious! Crispy chicken sandwich was perfectly crunchy and flavor packed. Philly cheese sand, great portion and super flavorful. The bbbom bowl has a beautiful presentation and tasty! On a much needed girls trip you try ALL of the foods! Scratch was HIGHLY recommended by several locals so of course we had to give it a try. Lawdy y'all..... this place. My mouth is watering just thinking about it! The amount of food we ordered because ya know we gotta try everything ... pimento cheese wontons, bbq egg rolls, blues mac & cheese, their famous waffle batter chicken sandwich, truffle cotija fries, for dessert we hot a muddy jar, and crème brûlée. And let's not forget the delectable craft cocktail... I got the spring sorbet which was as amazing as it sounds. But that blues Mac n cheese... let me tell y'all about this mac & cheese... bliss... heavenly.... Shaved and Marinated Ribeye Steak, Bleu and Monterey Jack Cheese, Caramelized Mushrooms and Onions, and Candied Bacon Bits. Absolutely divine. We enjoyed our visit to Scratch, we all ordered a cocktail and different entrees. BBQ egg rolls to start and then the entrees ordered were the philly, fried chicken sandwich, shrimp po boy and blues mac & cheese. Everyone enjoyed what they got! I had the crème brûlée sour, which was very interesting! Reminded me of lemon meringue pie. My meal was the Philly that was served with fries, pretty big and filling sandwich. I loved the cheese sauce. I tried the crispy chicken sandwich which was also really good, the bread was perfectly toasted and the ingredients came together really well. I was not impressed with the side of Mac and cheese that was ordered for an extra charge, just don't think it was worth the money. The Mac and cheese entree was also pretty expensive at $23 but was a large portion. The restaurant opened 15 minutes late, once they opened, the place filled up fast with almost all the tables taken. Service was attentive but had a late start due to miscommunication about who was supposed to be taking care of us. Worth a stop and I recommend get one of the sandwiches. read more

This is the best kept secret in Apex! First time here, and the food was AMAZING!!!!! Service was excellent and the log cabin type decor gave you all the warm and cozy feels especially by the fireplace. The coffee is French pressed to order and the FOOD! I'm using CAPS TO EMPHASIZE THE FLAVOR PARTY IN YOUR MOUTH! Chefs kiss on the crème brûlée French toast and pork skillet hash. My friends who live there hadn't even tried this wonderful spot. Service and ambiance were very good. My wife and I started with the firecracker shrimp appetizer and it was excellent. Next was the main course and it was just ok. My wife got the 1/2 chicken dinner with Brussel sprouts. The chicken was good but sprouts were tough and inedible. I got the shrimp and grits and the shrimp were prawn (large) shrimp and they had so much breading on them that I stopped eating after the second one. The grits were mediocre. This is the first time we visited and we were disappointed. I think we'll try them again and order different dishes next time. We are a fan of Mason Jar Tavern and Tap Station and thought this would be an elevated version but it wasn't. read more

The hostess was really rude right off the bat. I watched her be short with customer after customer. Frankly the food could have been fantastic and that start would have soured the whole experience. But the food Wasn't fantastic. The Chex mix was stale. No alcohol in the Bloody Mary? French toast was burnt and potatoes were soggy (see picture). Fried chicken on the salad had no salt or flavor and was soggy. Rotten lettuce was included in the salad (see picture). One of our party waited an extra 15 minutes after everyone else had their food. We waited. Everyone ate cold, even the very few parts of the meal that arrived hot. Even the cold bacon arrived with cold, white, congealed bacon fat on it (see picture). Her dish arrived with raw eggs when they were ordered fully cooked. The orange cream desert was totally flavorless and one note. The chocolate coffee mousse one was ok - if you like instant pudding. The fries had approximately a gallon of queso if you're into that sort of thing (I am). That's why I gave a whole star. More details on the customer experience: When we arrived, the family sat at one of 8 or so vacant tables in the outside eating area while I checked in. I was told by the staff that because there were "a limited number of servers," we could not wait at the table. We were moved elsewhere to wait with a baby and toddler. This would have been fine if the crew of high school kids wasn't so rude. I have waited at a table for servers to be ready at many restaurants, many times. I had very clearly requested an outside table in the shade because we have young kids. A party of 2 who arrived after us was ready to be seated and changed the size of their party at the last second, to be much larger. They were immediately given the shaded table we were waiting for, even though their party had not arrived yet. They proceeded to leave their things at the table we should have had to play cornhole for 25 minutes while we ate in the sun. Halfway through our meal, one woman moved her table and kids to a different spot in the patio to be in the shade. We followed her. Then everyone else did. But seriously, Sun umbrellas are basic equipment and they're not that expensive. This place is a disaster. read more

This restaurant is well worth the wait! It is small and located in the back of a reburished tobacco exchange building. There is seating indoors and outdoors. You can orders drinks if you have to wait. The waitlist in online and can check your spot (which is nice considering we couldn't do this when we were younger!). There are high tops, regular tables and a booth inside. There is a bar and an accent fireplace. I would like to call their decor "rustic chic" and they did a really good job with the look. I was pretty hungry when I ordered the Bibimbab bowl. It did NOT disappoint. The meat on top tasted like bulgogi and there was a surprise round of mac and cheese on the bottom, it was huge but I ate it all. The prices are on the higher side but I think it is well worth it. Ambiance is every tacky millennial restaurant asthetic with cheese grade lamp shades, nothing to write home about. I got the crispy pork belly bites and the cast iron chicken. The "crispy" pork belly bites had 0 crunch or crisp to them and they had WAY too much sauce on them. On the contrary the cast iron chicken was bland. At least the service was good. I didn't want to cook dinner tonight and decided to support a local Apex restaurant. Based off of reviews, I chose Scrap Kitchen & Taproom. Scratch has an online menu which is easy to use and you can add your phone number to get a text alert when your food is ready. This worked out perfectly! I placed my order, received an expected completion time, and received a text when my food was ready for curb-side pickup. All I had to do was arrive at the restaurant, call their number, and the food was at my car within a minute. In total, I think it was a 5 minute round trip from my house to the restaurant. As for their food - Overall it was good. I ordered the Bibimbap bowl, a Blues Mac & Cheese for my boyfriend, and BBQ Egg Rolls as an appetizer. Everything was VERY rich and dense. My boyfriend, who usually devours his food, only ate about a 1/3 of the mac & cheese. My Bibimbab bowl was very flavorful and delicious, but I also couldn't finish it. My boyfriend really liked the egg rolls. I thought they had good flavor, but overall I didn't like how greasy they were. Again, glad to support a local restaurant during these crazy times. Ambiance was fine, service messed up my order, only slightly. Here's why it's a 1 star. I got a BBQ burger with fries. It tasted a little funky but i was SUPER hungry so i ate it all. I have been to this restaurant in Apex several times, but with some big gaps between my visits. For some reason, They seem to have a terrible time of hiring, good, reliable help, and the staff never seems to know exactly what they're doing. The service is always so up and down. It really stuns me. During a recent visit, I had my appetizer be delivered to my table when my dinner was done and, the server actually debated with me when I asked her to take it off my bill. I asked for a manager who was more cooperative, but did not take the feedback well about my previous bad experiences with very poorly train staff Although the food quality is generally pretty good, it seems to be a shorter and less inventive menu than I would've expected. I have not seen a rotation of menu items in the nearly 5 years they've been there maybe and it's time for a little bit of a change. Here again, I am once again in a big gap from this place, because the last two experiences back to back were "food decent. Service marginal" They can do better than this. read more

Many people had recommend we go here so we had high hopes and headed over on a Monday night with our two sons, age 4 and 10. Unfortunately it didn't live up to the hype but I do think it has promise so we'll have to give it a second try. We were greeted promptly and our party of four was seated at a small table with four wooden chairs that proved to be uncomfortable. The table was too small for four people which caused us to have to shift plates around, carefully place glasses in open spots, etc. The interior of the restaurant had a great rustic vibe with "found items" used to decorate. It was very loud. The menu looked great but with two kids in tow for dinner, the only kids items were found on the brunch portion of the menu. We asked for a children's menu and were told they ran out of them only to have the server return promptly with one menu and one pack of crayons for the two kids. Warm towels were a nice touch!! Service throughout the meal was very fast but not friendly (or unfriendly). That seemed to be par for the course as none of the staff seemed to crack a smile. For appetizers we received 6 potstickers with dipping sauce ($12). They had a nice taste but each one was a single bite. We were served room temperature chocolate porter which lacked flavor - maybe it would have been better cold. I enjoyed my fried chicken salad immensely, though it was small. The chicken on it was outstanding! My husband's veggie burger was very salty. My older son said his fries were under salted but my younger son gobbled down his entire meal. Our check was delivered mid meal (remember the prompt service I mentioned??) and with tip the meal exceeded $100. Some items were priced more than on the menu but it was only a few dollars so we didn't bring it up. Unfortunately we were still hungry... Even though a staff member exited right before us, the bathroom had trash on the floor and no paper towels. We could tell by the dirty white light switch that it hadn't received a thorough cleaning in a while. We left without being thanked. read more

What a cute restaurant! They have a decent size indoor seating, enclosed outdoor seating, and fully outdoor seating with space heaters! Our table ordered scratch fries, crispy chicken sandwiches, and cast-iron chicken. Fries portion was sooo generous that it could've been a meal and then some. The chicken sandwiches were recommended by our server and it was a lot of food as well! It's comes with 2 large pieces of chicken and a side.
