This quirky little town is packed with photo ops, horseback rides, food, kayaks, weddings, and some of the funniest merchandise you'll ever see. Screams Ice Cream was the highlight of our visit. The staff was super friendly, the atmosphere was lighthearted and fun, and the store had a great selection of hilarious souvenirs. I especially appreciated the kid-friendly "HECK" merchandise -- it was such a clever touch! If I could I would give it 666 stars. The definition of a tourist trap but hell, naming this town Hell was just so it could be a tourist trap. We didn't have any ice cream but bought some kitschy souvenirs since the place is stocked floor to ceiling with them. I bought a black demonic rubber ducky and a postcard the cashier cheerfully charred with a lighter for me after asking ever so politely if I wanted it singed. Then she put it in a little plastic biohazard bag for me. I forget what gimmicks my friends bought but they got plenty, lots of cheap little tchotchkes if you don't wanna shell out for a hoodie or something, too. Honestly, just the way the older Asian lady greeted us with a chipper "Welcome to Hell" was worth five stars alone. There's lots of goofy and ghoulish photo opps outside to prove you've been to Hell, too. I don't know if mini golf is up and running. There was nothing doing there on a rainy Halloween in 2022, though I think they said they had 3 weddings scheduled for that day. I think it was the Addams, the Munsters and oh I don't know, the Todds, the Mansons? I don't know if I'll be back but I have been to Hell and back ... on Halloween no less. read more

HELL was an aweful experience, we were in Pinckney for a wedding last week a decided to go putt putt and get ice cream. what a joke, ice cream was closed , putt putt was closed and the hell keeper told us they closed in 5 minutes. there were 16 of us and it looked like we were the first 16 people to visit in weeks. any way it was a terrible experience so don't go to hell read more

This is an amusing spot to get ice cream, stating it mildly. If you don't like puns, it reads of suitable punishment. While, like most places at this time during the pandemic, they are short staffed, the person who was working there was amazing army managing a crowd with her time split over several functions, including the ice cream counter, a shop, and mini golf. There was a limited selection of ice cream flavors, but many special ones for those who like exotics. Business was enough that the ice cream was very fresh. They have really neat plastic protectors to control drips on your hands, and use spoons that change color with temperature. The banana split is presented in a small black plastic coffin with a shovel for a spoon. The waffle cones are baked fresh and only cost a $1. All in all, this is a fun experience. read more

They have the Crematorium ( Ice cream ) we were going to get ice cream after pizza at The Hell Hole but for some reason they closed 30 min early. I guess we already spent enough on t-shirts. But sadly the T shirt I really wanted they were out of. The Pride shirt that said "everyone is welcome in hell". This place was a scream!!! No, we didn't get the ice cream but it is filled with a heel of a lot of souvenirs! Picked up a key chain or two but here's the best part. Buy postcards, get a stamp on them and they will post mark them from Hell. Then they take a lighter, set the bottom on fire to char it and there will be carbon tracking (smoke stains) on the back. Lovely little place with lovely people ! The Staff was very friendly and funny, yelling out "Hell themed" jokes Nice little gift shop with nice ice-cream collection. They tons of souvenirs including shot glasses , hats, hoodies , tees and many more. There are so many funny memes on items referring to "Hell ". Everything is the store had "Hell" theme. They even sell "Hell soil in a bottle" for 3$. Would definitely recommend a trip to this store. DO NOT forget to visit behind the store where there is Little bridge of "locks of Love." I went here yesterday to check it out and it was pretty fun. The staff in the store are helpful and friendly even offering water to us as it was near 90 when we arrived. Everything in the store goes along with the theme and I was there when the mayor of the day got his proclamation and welcomed a tour group. You can send yourselves postcards back to be postmarked and burned so don't forget that. The staff will show you what it looks like. Also can't miss is the ice cream with the clever names for the "droppings" all for $1. I had salted caramel and my son had chocolate both delicious. read more

We really enjoyed our trip to Hell (how strange is it writing that?!!) It's not much, about 3 houses, the Hell dam (which does freeze over and people were ice fishing on) a cute chapel which couples were getting married at (If you get married in Hell, it can only get better) and the best ice cream ever! They have a large sundae bar in a coffin that you can load with all kinds of creepty toppings for 99 cent! Where else can you get a gut busting sundae for less than a buck? Only in Hell.... The people there and quiky and charming and obviously love it here, crack jokes and made the trip here a blast. One of those things you have to see, a fun day trip for the family. read more

This spot is a bit of a wide spot in the road but.... It's a really fun place to spend a bit of time. If you're one of those folks like me who loves Halloween year round? Take the time to pop in here. The ice cream is really good- may I advise buying a handful of post cards, then going to the diner next door, writing them and then bringing them back to Screams where they'll singe them to give that authentic "to hell and back" look. We didn't use the putt putt course because it was the first of October and cold. Maybe next time? I'd love to come back when it was warmer. read more

My buddy and I went to hell last weekend and we had a egreat time. I guess it's because Halloween is coming up so even Creepy Clyde the DJ pianist was there singing songs and he was great. Surely anybody giving this place less than five stars is going to hell after they leave Hell Michigan.As a US Army veteran, the employees treated me like a hero, which I'm not, in hell. This place reminds me of Da Yoopers tourist trap in Ishpeming Michigan with the knickknacks and T-shirts and bumper stickers and they are ice cream expert's too. It's funny that I used to live pretty close to hell but never came here and stopped and enjoyed the businesses, that I had to drive 250 miles to have a great time in hell. (2016) When I had my grave digger it was made from THREE BIG scoops of ice cream, THREE cherries, and a BANANA shaped man. And was the best thing ever to get at the hell store. It came with a certificate of death with actually burnt edges and all served in a massive food container. (2022) I took my friend here to our cottage on hi land lake to visit, he got the grave digger thinking it was something special. Now it is in a small plastic coffin shaped peace of garbage that breaks to easily, has TWO SMALL scoops, ONE cherry, and a small TWINKIE in the middle. CAUTION manager can be snappy. read more

If their goal is to be as terrible as actual Hell they are over achievers. Honesty it's so frustrating and sad because I was so excited to go to Hell. But this place is a joke with terrible, terrible customer service. So many things happened when we were there: Crazy employee ranting about coworkers using her lint roller for 10+ minutes, same crazy employee berating the sweet younger employee about the way she folds t shirts, same crazy employee telling us there were birds on the golf course and we needed to stay away from them because they were important to her, golf course filled with broken glass, spiders, and birds oh my! The mini golf is absolute trash that looks like it hasn't been maintained or even looked at since it was thrown out there. For them to actually charge for that is a crime. Congrats on literally being worse than what I imagine actual Hell is like. read more

I absolutely adore this place. Granted, I like tacky little tourist traps, but Screams Ice Cream from Hell is one of the best Michigan has to offer. It's a relatively quick (and lovely if it's autumn) drive from Ann Arbor. You'll be driving down a winding road, then BAM! There it is: a party store, Screams, and Dam Site Inn. Screams is a real hoot. Outside, you'll find little picture-pose stands where you can be a "lil devil from Hell," bigfoot, a multi-headed monster, etc. There's also a wedding chapel (which looks like it was made exclusively for little people), a tiki bonfire, and OH YEAH, a Dam. There's apparently a putt-putt course too, but it looks pretty pathetic and I'm not even sure if it's open. Inside, you'll find a "creamatory" (yuk yuk!) with very huge and very delicious death-themed ice cream treats! I recommend the Gravedigger Sundae. And you'll find all the toppings in a "condiment casket." Silly signs like "Shoplifters will have HELL to pay" are posted all around. Now, I love Halloween more than any other holiday and celebrate the whole month of October. What I absolutely love about Screams is that it's not just a themed ice cream parlor and it's not just a kitschy gift shop. It's actually a year-round Halloween store! And yes, THAT is exactly what was missing from my life. Not only is all the HELL merch (beer glasses, shot glasses, t-shirts, keychains, license plates) amusing and fun, but they have all sorts of Halloween decor! The lines are long for both ice cream and to buy junk, especially on Saturday, but the staff is all very friendly and helpful. I had the most surreal day at Screams last Fall. It was a Saturday and it was packed. The customers were split between loads of families with too many kids (apparently Ms. Benatar was right--Hell really is for children), and friendly biker dudes/chicks (apparently it's a popular stop for bikers.) In the midst of all of this was Creepy Clyde from Nightmare Sinema, singing the theme song from Spider Baby in the corner of the store. A perfect day. read more

We also bought some tshirts and souvenirs! They have an 18 hole putt putt behind the parlor also! This was my fourth time to Hell, but first time to Scream's. The first thing you'll notice when you walk in is either the big coffin full of ice cream toppings or the combination smell of an ice cream and kitschy souvenirs which, to me, is quite intoxicating. Bath soaps should come in this scent. A freshly made waffle cone with three scoops will cost just over $4. However, the topping coffin will cost you extra change I believe (which contains peanuts, m&m's, crushed oreos and a few other things), which is probably worth it since it doesn't seem to have a limit as to how much you can load up on. What's really cool is the wet naps. They're *actually* wet! They have a pretty cool Halloween tree (hanging upside-down) along with tons of Halloween themed items for sale. They even sell... ghost--ahem... ghost poop. Uh-huh. Oh, yeah! The ice cream was some pretty great stuff! (They accept debit/credit for transactions over $4 or $5.) read more

Visited here last fall, it's a nice ice cream parlor/gift shop in Hell. The staff was super friendly, even gave my son a giant thing of gummy worms, when they found out he's allergic to dairy. It's things like that you really remember. The gift shop was nice, we got a tacky melted snowman snow globe. There's couple photo ops in the parking lot. Other then that there's not much else to do in Hell. But at least you can say you've been to Hell and back. read more

Well, let me preface this by saying that this is NOT a bad business. The idea is awesome and it has the potential to be a great stop on a day trip for you and your family. Unfortunately it is Being exceptionally poorly managed. My daughter and I camp at Bruin Lake Campground inside of Pinckney State Rec Area, it is a great campground, very well run, clean with a great beach and playground. When we checked in on Sunday 7/14' we were given a flyer for canoe rental at Scream's. we set up camp, went to the beach and planned to leave early the next day so we could take our 4 and 5 year old daughter's on a quick canoe trip in the morning before we had to take down our tent to checkout. The next morning I called as we were driving over to Scream's and was met with an exceptionally rude person answering the phone, "this is Hell, WHAt? what!" I asked about availability and she immediately made me feel lie, a total idiot for not having a reservation (it was Monday Morning). I told her that I would just come in and talk to her because we couldn't get a good phone connection. I came in and everyone on staff (three younger kids) knew that I had called which made it obvious that Judy the manager had been saying negative things about our phone call. Unfortunately, I can't help our bad connection, we were in the middle of nowhere.. Once I got there, I showed Judy the manager the flyer I had received at the campground, which she snatched out my hand and demanded to know where I got it. (Seriously?) and said she was going to make a copy of it so this MISTAKE didn't happen again. The flyer quoted a rate of $10 an hour per canoe (we needed two) and she quoted a rate of $90 for a rental. She then berated every single person on her staff in front of us about what a mess and PROBlEM this was. And went as far as to attack one of them and say "get out of my personal space while I'm talking to you!!" We never asked her for a discounted rate, we simply stated that it didn't make sense for us to pay $90 to take a four and five year old around a lake for an hour, after much waiting and debate and conflict with her, she said " I am going to GiVE you a discounted rate, but we are not picking you up at your campsite (standard procedure), and we are taking other customers ahead of you. (This was after we already paid). She then INSULTED my FOUR year old and her friend and said "in the future, your children should not be in here dressed so inappropriately, I like shorts and shirts". Well Judy, if I thought it was going to take over an hour to rent a canoe, I wouldn't have dressed little kids in their bathing suits and flip flops. I would have brought a change of clothes and a snack. After she was done insulting us, Christian ( who is clearly an angel from Heaven), helped us out with our canoe, getting it launched and all. We had to take an extra couple minutes, little kids had to go potty after what is now TWO hours, and we had to throw our entire campsite into our cars because we were now going to be late for checkout (thanks Judy). So, just when we were ready to go down to the ether, her comes Judy striding across the campground ScReAMING at Christian about not trusting him, and not following her orders. She then accused my sister who is visiting from Thailand, our 2 little kids and my friend who runs a cancer research center of being a threat to her purse that she left in the van we were in. I wound up walking to the launch area and she rode in the van presumably to continue to abuse Christian and accuse my friend and kid of stealing from her. I could go on for days about this experience, but the short story is this. Please continue to support this local business. But steer very clear of Judy, she is a classically horrible manager who does not honor advertising she screwed up, she tries to do everything herself and does it all wrong and Ineffectively, she humiliates her employees who are honestly trying to do a good job, and then punishes them for trying to take care of paying customers and make up for her exceptionally rude behavior and Unprofessionalism. I am looking forward to speaking to the owner John when I get a free moment and can't wait to sing the praises of Christian. I manage a designer brand of cosmetics that is based in NYC and Paris, I employ 30 people who work in four states. I am responsible for training, marketing, employee management, store communication and image responsibility. Judy, was unable to rent me a canoe in under two hours and be nice and courteous to a four year old. So, if you go to Hell and want the FULL experience, talk to Judy! read more

Our motorcycle trip to Hell was a beautiful ride. But we were disappointed to find that Screams is now gift / novelty shop and no longer serves ice cream. If you want ice cream you have to go next door to the general store for that. On our visit the freezer for the hand dipped ice cream was broken and the coffin was not set-up. The general store is not decorated in Halloween style either. We visited the Dam Site Inn for an early dinner and almost didn't go in because we thought it might have turned into a biker bar or biker club, it didn't look family friendly at all. We risked it anyway (we were hungery) and went in. The food was great but the place needs to be updated or cleaned at the very least. I was confused is it a bar or a restuarant? This was our second visit to Hell and so much has changed. The whole reason to visit was Screams and now that unique novelty of the place is lost. We were sadly disappointed and it's safe to say that it will be a cold day in "Hell" before we will ever return there again. read more
