By and large I find Marv's pastries and breads to be mediocre, but the one major exception is their gingerbread cookies which are absolutely phenomenal. Their pastries are reasonably priced and they always have deals of the day although the discounts are negligible - eg something normally $4.89 might be on sale for $4.29 or so. I haven't found the service to be particularly friendly either which seems unusual for a longstanding mom-and-pop with loyal customers who have been coming for decades (I'm the third Marv's generation in my family). I do think it's sweet how they offer free coffee with any bakery purchase. It's by no means gourmet but it's a nice touch. They also sell some miscellany like cheeses, pickled goods, meats, etc. About half the physical space is all baked goods and the second half is the rest. I can't imagine anyone doing significant shopping here but if you needed an item conveniently you can get it here. read more

Local butcher and bakery that is worth the stop. Right off Grand River and a parking lot right in front with plenty of spaces. They take made to order cakes, and the chocolate chip cookies are my favorite. There are bake goods, fresh bread, seasoning, frozen and fresh meat for sale. The meat counter has a number system so when you show up grab a number. The bakery is stand in line to purchase. Teo different areas under one roof. They take cash and card. They offer recipe ideas on cards and posted around the area to snap a picture. All the employees are helpful and patient will I make your selection. Love the nostalgic pictures and memorabilia decorating the area. read more

I ordered a carrot cake for a birthday. It was difficult upon taste to detect it was a carrot cake. It was a mediocre cake. The Decorating was? Like a 7th grader in home ec who couldn't care less. Marv's bakery was once a special place. After so many times it hasn't been. Now, it's not. Service is adequate. Not smiling and cheerful which adds to the ambiance of a place that's going downhill. Very sad because I'm sure this establishment has been the go to for many local families for family events. It's been mine for 40 years. All good things must come to an end however. Had a cake from here today and it was good. I had a few decadent bites of the red velvet, white or yellow cake and the chocolate sheet cake. The wedding cake was for videos and pictures too. If you get a wedding cake from here, they will give you a free wedding topper for your 1 year anniversary, nice. The red velvet crumbled and was quite dry and not so good. No one at our table liked their red velvet, it was a fail. The chocolate cake was the better bites of the 3. The top of the first layer was a pudding. It was moist and tasty. Lately the bakery seems to be going downhill. Service is horrible. There are all new people working there. Not one of them is friendly or helpful. This afternoon the young kid working there was listless and unattentive. Gave me the wrong donuts. Lately the sourdough French bread is always gone. It use to always be there. Way less of all the items. And the atmosphere there feels creepy not friendly at all. I have stopped going there as often. Now i will drive to town and go elsewhere. It is sad. I've only been here once. I need to come back. I love it. So many places in this area give me little reminders of "back in the day". First off, their brownies! I used to get brownies like theirs at a bakery in Madison Heights that was owned by a Polish woman and her son. They were my FAVORITE. I never thought I'd find brownies like those again and I did! I got one with peanut butter topping and yum! I also got a coffe cake which was really good! Crumbly and moist. What I liked is that they also had a deli. I hate getting deli meat at the grocery store because it takes forever. It was not too busy here. There was a staff working the deli and another working the bakery. I was in Marv's today, looking for chuck roast. The gent said they were in the cooler shelf, marked as English Roast. I bought two, cooked them low and slow (225 degrees). These were TOUGH as beef jerky! Absolutely AWFUL. They're going outside to the wildlife. Normally I love Marv's meats, but don't be fooled into buying the worst roast beef ever. This was my second trip to Marvs. It wasn't super crowded at the time, but the older lady who waited on me was so rude and abrasive. I asked for a dozen donuts, then apple fritters, which she snapped "those aren't included". I said that was fine and then she told me I was over a dozen. I got to my vehicle counted and realized she actually shorted me 2 donuts!! I honestly wouldn't' have cared and only wanted to call her on it because she was SO very rude to me. I did not go back in because I didn't feel like waiting in line. She also just shoved all the donuts on top of each other. I have never seen anyone do that at a bakery. They normally use wax paper and have them kinda separated, very odd I thought. I had to ask her what a few of them were iced with and that also annoyed her. I think we found our new donut spot! Marv's didn't disappoint. Their jelly comes in several flavors. We tried the raspberry. It was one of the better jelly donuts I've had. Next we're trying the cherry and the strawberry. Their glazed yeast donuts are superb and the chocolate cake glazed were great too. Still need to try their cannoli and their bread selection, but this is my new donut hole. On a more meaty note, they have something like 7 different kinds of hotdog from their German style to their 1904 dog. We procured a couple of each and are working our way through all of them. So far the Germans are our favorite and they're huge. I also tried some of their Maple Blueberry breakfast sausage. Check em' out, they're worth it! read more

Stopped in to try the donuts and I'm so glad I did. My husband LOVES apple fritters and really enjoyed it. Every donut I got was delicious. The cheese danish was salty sweet, the baklava donut it's not your normal donut, not too sweet and not very moist but so good with a cup of coffee. The glazed was delicious. The strawberry cream croissant was shockingly amazing. Seriously, their pastry dough is just plain GREAT. Worth a stop if you're in the area. read more

I have always loved Marv's Barkery. We come here whenever we are in the area. It is just too much of a hike to make it a regular stop but I would be here all the time if we lived nearby. After an area baby shower we swung by Marv's. I am 40 this year, my friends need to stop breeding already, I am sick of going to their baby showers to be honest. It always gets personal with other peoples questions, why don't I have kids, have I had IVF, why don't I adopt etc. How do you even answer that stuff really? Do you really want the nitty gritty gynecological details? Should I be rude too and make a poor taste joke about how your badly behaved critters don't inspire me? How bout I ask you why you did have kids and quiz you on exactly how you went about it. Sigh. My husband figured I needed cheering up and this did add a bright spot to the afternoon. Mmmm meat and donuts. That will perk this chick up. How can you go wrong with fat laden protein along with fat and sugar laden treats? It's my perfect combo. Luckily Marv's still has the best cake donuts, covered in tasty, rich (clearly not from a can) chocolate frosting and dusted with chopped up nuts, I savored every bite of mine. My husband got a pair of peanut butter cookies that must have been awesome too because they were gone before I could claim my usual bite *for review purposes only*, blame that distracting donut. We did add more carbs to our order by grabbing a loaf of marble bread that is one of my faves. We were fairly good overall though and did not buy as many sweets as we wanted to. There were many temptations we had to avoid. We stocked up here on carnivorous delights as well. House made Polish and Italian sausage as well as some beautiful freshly ground round. We also picked up a chicken kebab for me and a perfectly cut steak for James that we threw on the grill for dinner when we got home. No hassle cooking for sure. I love a dinner that requires nothing more than to add a green salad to the party. Service is great here, friendly people who are very helpful. They can help you get just what you need, just ask. Man, apparently today is the day for raining on everyone's parade. I promise this is the last sour face review (for now, heh heh). Before I get into the baked goods I do want to say that they have pretty tasty Polish sausage. As a born and bred Pole, I always miss kiebasa that is thick and flavorful (no taudry jokes, please). Marv's has the taste, though doesn't quite dry out as well as some of the authentic links. My partner and I got a $20 groupon to this place and as a baked goods enthusiast, I was ready as ever. Turns out, twenty dollars buys you A LOT! We ate their sweets for two days straight; breakfast, lunch, and dinner (don't try this at home kids - we are trained professionals). If you need to feed an army on a budget, go here. Their cupcakes were my favorite of the bunch so I can definitely see the enthusiasm in the reviews for their cakes. Good texture, not too heavy, not too light. Flavorful without being overwhelmed by sugar or fats. I also liked the turnovers! And I loved seeing all the cases bursting at the seams with goodies. Made me get that giddy little kid feeling in the stomach. My least favorite were the breads that taste like they were made from cake flour. Almost every loaf tastes like brioche - extremely butter heavy. I'm a bigger fan of artesian breads. These guys are not for me. Cinnamon buns and apple fritters drive me wild with desire. But at Marv's they left me luke warm. Speaking of which, they do have some cinnamon buns in a warming case, which is nice. In general I found most everything tasted the same sans a few different frostings or flavors. Strudels were wah-woh - so sweet and mushy. The 'cake cups' were also disappointing: the tres leches was more like uno de leche and the key lime creme didn't have a fantastic sour bite I expect from limes. They were doused in whipped cream and frosting. As for the éclairs, they had neither phenomenal filling nor airy pastry crust. The professor in me gives this place a C+. Not crazy about the ingredients and not crazy about the fact that everything seems to start out from the same basic recipe. More efficient, yes. More tasty? No. read more

I have not bought a lot of meats here simply because I live 40 minutes away and in need of refrigeration, but the sausage and the pizza burgers are amazing! Let's get to the bakery!!!!! You can't help yourself but buy too much of everything! If you are on a limited budget, get one big warm apple fritter and share with your friends! The pepperoni bread, sourdough marble, monkey bread are all outstanding! I'm 43 now with children. My grandmother went to Marvs bi-weekly and always took me along. I have literally driven across the state for the sour dough pumpernickel bread and molasses cookies. When we lived in Brighton, it was a given that ALL things bread came from Marv's. Excellent hamburger and hot dog buns as well. But it takes a little more dedication (obsession) to drive across the state from western Michigan to get their stuff!! Thank goodness we are moving back!! Having praised their goods, I will say that several times the worker behind the bakery counter made me feel bad for buying the goods....why? Because I bought more than one loaf of bread and more than a dozen cookies without calling ahead. Seriously?? Do you want to sell the stuff or not. The service at Marv's has simply become unacceptable. Too many high school kids waiting on you that don't care about their job, pay no attention to what you are ordering and would rather have conversations amongst themselves than wait on customers. Today was the last straw. Went in and ordered 8 1/2 lb. hamburger patties and upon arriving home found 4 port chops in my package. When I took the package back and explained what happened, the young people that work there did not apologize and for some reason or another found it amusing. I have never been in your store and don't know when I will, seeing it's close to 50 minutes away from my house, but I am IN LOVE-oh I mentioned that. Why the love affair you ask? Punchkie(yeah, I know it's not the proper polish spelling, get over it) day!!! Holy mother of jesus, were these things DELICIOUS. This is not your typical assembly line crap you get at dunkin or in boxes at kroger-this is the REAL deal. Aside from being larger than average with a sweet sticky glaze, as opposed to powder on the flavorful dough....it was the punch of filling, which in my opinion can make or break the punchkie. These fillings MADE. I had a raspberry one, this thing was STUFFED with freshly made raspberry goo, complete with seeds so you know it wasn't some bucket of manufactured crap they got at Gordon Food Service. Oh and then there was the second one I ate, which lord knows I didn't need....this was the best effing chocolate creme filling I have EVER had. Not some fake chocolate custard, but REAL creamy frosting type filling that you know by one bite is not out of a jar. It was so fluffy and flavorful, I even scraped my plate for the leftovers that oozed out the sides, when I cut it in half, only planning to eat half, of course, it didn't happen. Overall, if these punchkies that made my annoying workday into a fabulous fat tuesday are an indicator of the rest of their baked goods, I am glad I don't live ANYWHERE near here.
