This is on the Top of my list of places to eat while visiting Dayton. Each year I go on a girls trip to Tennessee, and we always stop to shop and eat the weekend they kick off their Holiday shopping in historic downtown Dayton. We love to support small businesses. The Screen Door Kitchen is a few blocks away from Market st. Not in walking distance, but an easy drive. The outside has a nice curb appeal being a charming 1900's farm house with a pretty front porch. Inside has a nice clean, comfy atmosphere with 2 rooms set up to dine in. The food is delicious! Recently, I had the crab cakes (2) per order...nice sized portions and full of tasty crab meat! My friends loved their meals too. One had the the pork tenderloin. It was cooked on a smoker making it super tender and moist. The Service is friendly, Prices are good and the food quality is excellent! Wish we had a Screen Door Kitchen in Marietta, Ga. We'll be back to dine same time next year!!! read more

I brought my 85 year old Mom here for lunch today not knowing if the menu you be to her liking or not. She absolutely loved the soup of the day, potato and ham. I had the fried green tomato BLT and potato salad. Oh my goodness this sandwich was so delicious and massive in size. We ordered the Butter pecan cake with caramel cream cheese frosting to share in celebration of my late Father's birthday. We will be coming back. read more

They have moved to Dayton TN in the old Finn house. Don't think they have missed a lick....meatloaf is to die for. Rest of group said theirs was great as well. I can't say anything bad about this business. Service was spot on. We drove 35 miles from Chattanooga and would do it again in a heart beat in order to dine at this homey, genuine and good-food restaurant. The universal definition of the word, "cafe," does not apply here. This may be a great restaurant, sandwich, shop, diner, or any number of things, but not a "cafe." Apparently the word sounded cool to the owners, but they probably haven't travelled far. As our friend's in France, Russia, South America, and North America know, a "cafe" specializes in coffee - hence the name "cafe." Oh, and don't expect to get anything, not even a mediocre cup of coffee, in the morning - they open at eleven! Just a thought: cafes sell great coffee in the morning! read more

What a great place! Beautiful Victorian house, great service and excellent food. Others have mentioned the meat loaf but I want to put a plug in for it too. I don't normally order meatloaf out but I strongly encourage you to try it- a mountain of food and very tasty. They also have excellent salads and some great looking desserts. The food was amazing, the wait staff amazing, the owner...amazing. We came to visit at the same time as "Rebecca T." on 5/12/18 who claims the owner was out of line but we were sitting at the next table over and saw and heard everything. I was very impressed that the owner refused to be disrespected in his own restaurant and he drew and appropriate line. Words have consequences and an impact on people, even as a guest you shouldn't be spouting off and I applaud the owner for standing up for his employees. I was incredibly impressed with the quantity of food and the quality. Our table of 11 were all pleased with our entrees, sides and desserts. The portions were generous, the flavors were spot on and even the plating was well done. I certainly didn't expect such great quality or flavor from a small-town restaurant but we got it in spades. I'll be coming back to Screen Door Cafe next time I'm in the area (We live in Ohio.) read more

We went to Dayton to visit family and found this great place in an old Victorian just outside of town in a beautiful location. Food is maybe best described as classy country fare made with care. Very interesting and tasty. Great selection of homemade desserts that taste so good you don't feel all that guilty. Waitstaff helpful and friendly. Interior just a bit bare. It wouldn't hurt to have some objects from the past a la Cracker Barrel or local sourced paintings or art .Chairs also not padded and a mite uncomfortable but that was after tarrying 1 1/2 hours due to good company. So in summary this 60+ year old reviewer has seen and dined at many a good restaurant and this place evidently cares about the quality of their fare with interior decor being only a minor issue. Don't make comments about the food or speak very loud (even if the restaurant is noisy) where the staff can hear you or you might be asked to leave the restaurant. Our grandchildren and their mother (former daughter-in-law) came up today to take me out for Mother's Day. We decided we would go to the Screen Door Café. My husband and I have been going to this place since he was located in Soddy-Daisy and have always enjoyed the food and have not encountered any problems. Tonight, however, we had our first and last problem because we will not go back. When we were served our food, our grandchildren's mother (who had ordered the shrimp scampi) made the comment, "Is this all I get? It should have at least come with a side salad." She started eating and was talking about how good everything was when the waiter came to the table and picked up the dish without saying a word to anyone. We wondered what was going on. A few minutes later, he slammed a menu down next to her and told her to order something she might like better. At this point, she told him she wanted her food back. He left the table. A short time later, the owner brought the check and told her she needed to pay her check and leave his restaurant. He falsely accused her of yelling at his staff and bothering the other customers. He would not take the time to let us explain what had happened. Needless to say, we will no longer recommend the SCREEN DOOR CAFE in Dayton nor will we ever eat there again. read more

When I am in need for a fix of wonderfully tasting shrimp and grits, I go straight to the Screen Door Cafe!!! I have been to the Screen Door Cafe many, many time, it has wonderful burgers and other dinners but the piece de resistance is the most wonderful desserts!!!! You can't get a better place to eat in Dayton or anywhere in the Chattanooga metro area than the Screen Door Cafe!!! PS: It has been fun watching Maggie grow up! read more
