We tried Michael's Rest. in Athens last night. Will never return. Service was fine and the staff was welcoming. The place was initially pretty empty but began to fill up as we left about 6 pm. I had the BBQ ribs. My wife had the catfish. Her catfish was not attractively presented (in other words, it didn't make you want to eat it). The pieces were more like chicken tenders then fish. The breading and finish on the fried pieces was very light and appeared under-done. She doesn't complain so she left most of it. My ribs, which I ordered dry rubbed and not with sauce (because restaurants usually over-sauce them) were dry, unappetizing and disgusting. I'm a frequent rib eater so I was not expecting to get served that. I also left most of my food on the plate. I'm sorry but this place is not one that we will return to. There's nothing special about it, and nothing to bring us back. I know it's tough for restaurants these days but the owners need to order the food and see what the customers see. I wanted to love this place. I'm a big fan of comfort food and while waiting for my table I struck up a conversation with a gentleman who said he's a regular. He likes the catfish. I should have gotten the catfish. I ordered a medium rare ribeye that came out raw in the middle, and it was a little too fatty. The baked potato & broccoli were delicious but I'm pretty sure the butter that came with them was whipped margarine. (It wouldn't melt.) If you're thinking you'd like some American casual dining, Michaels doesn't disappoint. Let's start with the fact that this local restaurant is clean, probably the cleanest place I have visited in a long time. Also they are limiting capacity due to the ongoing pandemic. The menu is vast with classic BBQ dishes, seafood, chicken some pasta, all the way to sandwiches and burgers. They really do have something for everyone. Vegetarian? They have some very interesting salad choices as well. She ordered the catfish and I the brisket. Hers was fresh and hot my brisket was okay. Brisket is hit or miss at most places and this was just okay. Not to say it was bad but I would probably try something different next time. Five little slices of meat that were not trimmed of the fat cap and there was no presence of smoke. However everything was hot and fresh. And the tea was sweet, I'd suggest mixing the sweet tea with a little unsweet tea. All in all Michaels is a solid choice, the service was excellent as well. read more

While on a MC ride with friends to Sweetwater, we stopped for an adult beverage at this location around 330 PM I think on Sunday. It had off street parking and served draught beer (+1); small selection of maybe four or five and a cider. It is an open floor plan with tables and booths, no bar or high tops. It was definitely a family restaurant that was open and airy, clean and friendly. My friends were not hungry but I was so I ordered the potato skins with BBQ and they were awesome. They did not skimp on meat or sauce and there were 6 of them I think. They also gave us warm bread right out of the oven with great butter. The service was great and if the appetizer and bread is any indication, the main meals will be great. It was not a biker bar or hole in the wall like we were looking for but for a family resturant, I give it a four. read more

Great food, and good prices. This place is a great break from the standard chain places like Chilis or applebees. Similar menu items, but much better quality, variety, and prices! They've got good BBQ. I've yet to try the ribs, but all the others have been great. Chicken tenders here are AWESOME- Fresh, and cooked right. Never dry. But, the reason I go here- The CATFISH. It is some of the best I've ever had, anywhere, and very reasonably priced. It's breaded just right, always cooked to perfection, and the portion is huge. Since trying it the first time, I've never been able to order anything else!! Honestly, the only thing that I'd steer clear of here is the pasta dishes. It's not that they are bad, they're just not great. There are too many other outstanding menu items! Nice spot in a small town that we stayed in while we were working. Didn't want to do a "chain" so we came here. Good food and a great price. Wait staff was attentive and nice. I had beef tips with rice and broccoli. It came out hot and fresh. Good portion too - not enough to make you feel stuffed and not too little to make you feel robbed. Then I had a nice piece of carrot cake for dessert. Very moist and good. My only regret was the appetizer - loaded fries which were good; almost too good as I had to send them back cause it was messing up what was an already messed up diet. I've been told they have great ribs that are smoked in house...I usually only go at lunch time so I'm not really interested in eating anything that heavy. I had dinner here last night because people were raving about the BBQ. We had the boneless BBQ wings for an appetizer and they were very good. Nice and crispy and was delivered to the table quickly. I ordered the beef brisket platter and had baked beans and coleslaw as my sides. My wife ordered the pulled pork platter. These took over 45 minutes for our order. When we got it everything was cold. Both of our meats has no smoke flavor and definitely no smoke ring on the brisket. Plus the brisket was as dry as a desert. The baked beans tasted like they came straight out of a can. I'm not sure why it came highly recommended because I could not do the same. read more

I've eaten at Michaels a lot of times. Usually my experience has been good. Not today. However, they did try to make things right. I ordered their fried shrimp. Had it in February and it was great. Today it was too salty to eat. My waitress brought me another serving saying the first batter was at the bottom and might have settled. Tried the new serving. It was only slightly better. Tried it with catsup thinking the cocktail sauce might have been the issue. It wasn't. Very disappointed since is the only place in town I thought had good shrimp They took off the shrimp and "only" charged me for the potato and iced tea. read more

First time in Athens and very much enjoyed Michaels. Walked in on Sunday evening around 6pm and was seated promptly. Service is quick and food was good. Got the Trio platter and two sides, and an iced tea for $24, plus a $5 tip. Great food at a good price! Coleslaw and pulled pork were great! Mac n cheese was average. What a wonderful experience from the wait staff. Great food and our waitress was the best. "They call me Katie here, but I go by Katelyn". She said with a pretty smile that is to die for. My only issue was with the kitchen staff, whoever made out French Onion Soup is extremely scared to add cheese. I like soup with my cheese. I showed Katelyn a picture even of how we wanted our soup to be made. She told the kitchen kids, but my guess is they cant think outside the box and appease the customer. She bought the soup and apologized for the rudeness and disrespect of the Kitchen kids. This would be a 5 star if not for the Kitchen Kids. Thanks Katelyn "Katie". For great service.
