Adorable spot off the beaten path! I wouldn't drive out of the way to visit but if you're in the area, then it's a must! I love the charm of the old Victorian house. The staff is extremely friendly and even went out of their way to be kind and friendly to our kids and the kids at the table beside us. They offer a variety of shoes, burgers, pasta, apps, etc with a southern twist! I did hold one star back for the limited options of the menu but maybe they do a few things really really well. Our burger was amazing but our pasta was lacking. However, I had low expectations for shrimp scampi in a land locked state. I can not say enough nice things about the staff, super friendly! We didn't try their dessert but they looked delightful! Stopped in for brunch on Sunday after a long hiking and camping trip. Was wanting a full meal. This was certainly a big meal and a good one at that. Service was perfect. French press coffee. No wait. What's not to love? The Screen Door is set in an old farmhouse in Dayton. The menu tempted me with all manner of delicious sounding stuff, and had me wishing I had time to sample it all. I ultimately opted for the Crab Cakes while my wife had the Cahun Vegetable Pasta. Both arrived in big, generous portions and were both excellent. Other family ordered the (gigantic) Meatloaf served with Mashed Potatoes and a grilled Pimento Cheese sandwich with a side of Cajun Veggies. We were all quickly rendered quiet as our mouths were otherwise occupied. I was immediately jealous of the Meatloaf. It was an enormous slab of meat atop Mashed Potatoes and topped with Fried Onion Straws. I'm not sure how my son was able to eat it all. We finished with Peanut Butter Pie - excellent. It was somewhat pricier than a typical casual dining franchise, but well worth it. Meanwhile, the staff was super friendly. I recommend! read more

This was our time trying this place out. One of my friends had mentioned it and I liked the sound of it. My husband had the meatloaf, which is one of their specialties. My fork just had to take a little bite, yum yum delicious!! Mashed potatoes and gravy were "the bomb!" I ordered the shrimp and grits. It was delish also! My boys got a cheeseburger and chicken and waffles. The cheeseburger plate was empty so I guess he liked it and the chicken and waffles order was so big he had leftovers. I love out of the way, quaint places to eat. We drove up from Chattanooga specifically to eat here after driving by a few weeks ago. I like that I can get a good salad here and that sets it apart from the usual country cooking cafes in the smaller towns. I would come back for the salad. Husband had a burger and fries; I snitched a few fries, and they were awesome! I had the chocolate chip pecan pie and it was disappointing. The crust was more like a shortbread cookie texture than pie crust. It just didn't taste quite right...it was served cold (I asked them to heat it up) and what appears to be chocolate chips in the photo is actually burnt pecans (which probably affected the taste). I love the quaint house and enjoyed the beautiful drive up. I would come here again and hope for a better dessert experience next time. Oh, and we enjoyed the view of the pasture too! read more

I've eaten here in the past and my husband and I enjoyed the food so much!! The service was great and it has a family atmosphere.

I recently ate at the Screen Door Cafe for brunch and I was blown away by the crab cake eggs Benedict and home fries. It wasn't like anything I've had before. I was expecting some mediocre portion of eggs Benedict with an average tasting, previously frozen crab cake on top...I was wrong. It was SO delicious that I ate every bit of it. And the home fries...let me tell you home girl...SO GOOD! I would order that as my main meal! My daughter got a side order of waffles and bacon and this was anything but average. I'm not sure how they make their amazing Belgian waffles, but this was by far the best one I've ever had. And their bacon is thick cut and smoked to perfection. I highly recommend brunch at the Screen Door Cafe. The only thing that would make it better would be mimosas! read more

Had been looking forward to eating here for 2 years. Every time we come to Dayton, we drive by and never had the time to stop and eat. Looks very inviting... BUT... Couldn't be more disappointed. Came for dinner at about 6:00pm, only a couple other tables populated so I thought we beat the dinner crowd. Very nice hostess met us and sat us. We got menus. Another girl ask for out drinks... two waters, one with lemon. She brought a water and sweet tea. Then a nasty look when I said we asked for 2 waters, but brought us another water. More people come in.. 3-4 more tables fill. We're left sitting with our menus closed while others are putting in their orders. I tried to politely get out waitress attention, but was just ignored. After 25 minutes, we left... our waitress actually said "thanks guys" as we walked to the door...I TOLD HER YOU NEVER TOOK OUR ORDER... All I can say is that the food looked good. VERY DISAPPOINTED We ended up in town at "monkey town brewery". Had some awesome local brew, great food and played SINGO!! read more

Came for brunch, party of 5. Seated quickly enough, but sat for quite a while to get service, which was a 3 out of 10 for the meal. I've eaten here before and always found it top rate. Not today. Forget about getting the corned beef hash, which I was assured was made fresh from their own smoked meat. It turned out to be tiny cubes of something and potatoes in a serving that was minuscule. The biscuit was fabulous. Had to ask for butter and jam twice. Our waiter must have returned to our tables 15 times. Our meals came out one at a time over a 10 minute period. One meal was incorrect. Just moved in to the area and started a new job today and went out to eat with some guys from work. I heard the burgers were very good, so I ordered a burger. I am allergic to onions, so I asked for the burger with only bacon, cheese and mustard. I got a burger with everything. The waiter asked if we were all happy, I said no, but he was already walking away before we can even answer. I didnt eat any of the burger, but yet, the waiter still never once even asked anything what was wrong, clearly didnt care at all. He probably should move on with his life's work. I was there last Friday for lunch and Sunday brunch. Friday was great but the brunch on Sunday was terrible. The item I ordered had bacon and a biscuit covered in sauce gravy. The biscuit was old and so stale that it was hard. When I brought it up to the server they brought me another cold hard plain biscuit after we were done with our meal and I couldn't eat either. This is very uncharacteristic for them but no one made an effort to explain and $44 for 3 brunches was disappointing. We have been there over 20 times and brought many friends and family. Nice evening for a drive so headed up highway 60 to Dayton. Decided to try a local favorite. First of all the building (house) has so much history. It makes you feel like you are pulling up to grandma's house on the farm. And then the smell of cows and farm animals along with the drifting smell of BBQ and grilled meat as you get out of the car. Takes me back to when I was a kid on my grandparents farm. The food was amazing and we listened to the tables around us, everyone had high praises for the food. There are a few things that are a little spicy, make sure to check with your server. The cheesecake is made in house and seems to be a favorite as they were sold out by 6 pm but there were lots of other sweetness on the menu. The menu had a variety of choices and most everything is made in house which makes for a fresh and flavorful meal. My only negative with our experience was the wait for our meal...a good 45 minutes from the time we ordered. We were sure they were chasing the cow and chicken down outside. The way the rooms are separated it is hard to tell how many people were there but no line out the door and we had to wait that long for our meal. Service was good, kept our drinks filled and was pleasant. We will make the drive again to try a few more entrees along with dessert. Hopefully next time we won't have to wait quite as long...but I have to say it was delish! read more

I really miss Fehn's, that was previously in this location. Screen Door Kitchen is a different atmosphere, and the food is meh. I wish it were fresher, and less greasy. I love country cooking as much as anyone, but I feel the food misses the mark. It's a very cool place to visit and check out for the unique school it is in. Otherwise, try Home Folks Family Restaurant in Soddy Daisy -- good country cooking, plenty of variety. Since they took out the buffet there, I really have been enjoying it. read more

Went there as a group of 10 yesterday, with a reservation. We were running a bit late due to rain, so our drive leader called to advise them. They said "no problem". On our arrival a young man with a man bun hairdo said that he thought our reservation was for the previous day, and did not have tables for us. He said give him about 15 minutes to get room for us. About 45-50 minutes later, we got tables and ordered. Most food was correct, except mine was a fully loaded burger, after I ordered it plain "just meat and bread", and my wife's chicken salad sandwich was bad enough that she only ate half, and did not take the rest home. At the end they dropped off our checks with a $4.20 "service fee" on each check, with tip suggestions below that. That makes $44+ "service fee" to push 3 small tables together. Finally got to eat here! The shrimp and grits were highly recommended, so I went for it. The grits were formed into two "cakes", battered and fried-which was awesome. The sauce was tasty and mixed well with the grits. The shrimp looked great, but tasted a bit "too fishy". Although, it is January in a landlocked state...still, it was off-putting.
