This visit was disappointing. It was very busy. The servers did a good job will all they had to do. The hostess was not friendly, but not rude. I ordered a Ruben and slaw. We waited as later tables were served, but when our food arrived, it was warm. The sandwich had little kraut and dressing. Basically 100% on service, food was pretty good overall, but gosh the server guy thought he was amusing but super inappropriate. Oh, and he wasn't at all funny either. The next table told us "you have to deal with the service to get the food here" Well I ordered a spicy Nashville hot chicken I asked no Mayo please, he said no substitutions, I said, fine I don't want a substitute I just want no Mayo. He said they can't make it with no Mayo. Then said "you can scrap it off though". Pretty lame right? Well the sandwich comes, and literally it's just an ordinary bun you can buy at the grocery store with squirts of Mayo on it. Clearly they could have not put Mayo on. Well I took my knife and cut out the Mayo and put it in the floor. When our funny guy server came back i said "oh now the Mayo is on the floor, but you can scrap it off" and I emphasized his stupid scrap it off phrase. The food tasted pretty good, but was fairly overpriced considering the price after tax, tip, and up charges. $38 for two pulled pork plates is ridiculous with these portion sizes. They do not list all the up-charges that they charged on their menu, and they acknowledged that fact when we brought up our concerns. We had 5 up-charges in total for just getting sides and sauces. What a gem in Dayton, TN. Screen Door catered for a wedding and the food was impeccable. From hors d'ouevres (curried cauliflower, charcuterie meats and cheeses, pickled vegetables, seasonal fruit) to drinks (sparkling water infused with blueberry and mint, hibiscus tea (unsweetened!)) to the main course (roasted and pulled pork - insanely juicy and flavorful, fried fish, crab linguini, salad, and ceviche), we were never disappointed. A plus job for the catering. Brunch on Sunday was equally charming and delicious. Cheese (light, though) grits, the softest biscuits with sausage and an oh-so-yum gravy, scrambled eggs, and banana bread with pecan butter. Amazing. Their food here is one of a kind and they really take care in their flavors, presentation, and diversity and uniqueness of the menu items. You don't feel drowned by any "heavy" feeling in their food (grease, salt, oils, etc.). Love. Staff are all friendly and family-oriented. Will be back soon when I get the chance! read more

We went for our 31st wedding anniversary today. Food was great. Service was great. But I can't go back. There were flies in the dining room that kept diving into our food. It was not acceptable. A constant bother. Server even joked about shooing them away. I hid my anger over this unsanitary issue. Not a good way to do business. I hate to leave a bad review but it is what it is. They could have dealt with the flies or moved us to a different dining room. Others recommended that we go there. I was let down. read more

After the rain shut the ball game down we decided to get a late lunch. I was looking on yelp to see what was close and the Screen Door Cafe popped up with 4.5 stars so I thought we'd give it a try. We pulled in and were greeted warmly by one of the employees. We were seated immediately and then asked to move and were accommodated easily. We wanted to move because the main dinning area was really quiet and echoed a bit and we didn't want to disturb the other patrons when our seven month old started to scream. I ordered the burger and made it a double with no bun and added an egg. It was amazing and so were the Cajun veggies. They were spicy and delicious. We were on a road trip to nowhere and super hungry. Found this place on Yelp.....wow, if I lived in the area, I'd be here at least once or twice a week. Cute restaurant in an old farmhouse. We started with the crab puppies, which are a crab cake/hush puppy mashup. I've never had a hush puppy before, but this was awesome. Tons of crab. I had the fried catfish. Could have been seasoned a bit better, but it was so fresh and the coating was NOT greasy at all! I had the fries, which were amazing, and don't remember my other side. Husband had the BBQ, which was a little different, not your traditional sugar based BBQ sauce, but more of a mustard based sauce. It was good. His Mac and cheese and cajun veggies were good sides. Was asked how I wanted my hamburger cooked. I replied well, well done. The little thing was seared black on the outside, one bite revealed a very pink underdone center. Not safe to consume. Blonde waitress refilled all water glasses except mine. Glasses not placed in front of diners, but all 4 just left on corner of table. Despite generous access behind and between us, waitress chose to to reach over my plate repeatedly to serve companion on my left. She never even asked how we liked our food, or why I left by undercooked burger virtually untouched. This used to be an excellent, upscale place with delicious food called Fehn's, now now a total dive, horrible food and worse service. Attractive historical building restored by previous owners. The restaurant we came in and the owners had kids playing all over the restaurant-we tried to ignore. Then as we are waiting their was flies all over the place. I counted 6 flies on one table! 6 FLIES! They were everywhere. I was very disappointed until the food came out. WOW the food was amazing. I had the bbq and it was absolutely some of the best. The fries I had you could tell were fresh cut fries. The Mac n cheese was good as well. My wife got the fried shrimp and she said it was good. Nice overall experience. Fried shrimp and Fried catfish plates. Both well-prepared, plentiful portions, hush puppies real home-style and tasty, french fries were hot and good, the cole slaw was excellent - a mix of mayo and vinegar and fresh, mac and cheese home-style. Nothing about the shrimp, fish, hushpuppies, or fries was the least bit greasy or tasting of old oil. That's a pleasant surprise from many places that serve fried foods. The staff was attentive without being in your face. Prices are less than you'd pay in Chattanooga for better food and a relaxing atmosphere without the typical city rush and loudness. I have been here many times and always enjoyed the food and service. But the last three times have been a disappointment from a service standpoint. Went last night and was told there would be a 20 minute wait, after 25 minutes I asked the hostess and was told they lost the list. After we were seated we waited 10 minutes before anyone spoke to us . We ordered our food and was asked if I wanted my salad before the food, I said yes. After 45 more minutes and a few requests for the salad, we got our meals without the salad. I will say the food was very good too bad for the service read more

We were not disappointed. The service was the best we have experienced, from the warm welcome as we entered, to the constant attention and very quick food delivery, we were made to feel very special. We were there for a Saturday lunch, and opted for two "Snacks" (appetizers) Fried Green Tomatoes with Pimento Cheese and Herb Aioli and Soul Rolls (Egg rolls stuffed with BBQ, Collard Greens and Hoppin'Jon, served with BBQ Duck Sauce. Both were FANTASTIC!! Since we ordered two appetizers, we decided to split a Chicken Livers plate. For $8 we got hot, fresh chicken livers cooked perfectly. This came with two sides. Both of us wanted the collard greens, so we got a double serving of them, and they were a great Southern menu treat. Had a grilled chicken salad that rivals anything I've ever had at a restaurant from Nashville to Atlanta and in between. Wife and brother in law were kind enough to share bite of their meals as well. We moved to the area a year ago and come to Dayton often for dinner. In doing so, we have passed Screen Door several times, thinking little of stopping. Then last weekend, we happened to drive by on Sunday at around noon, and saw how many people were waiting to be seated for brunch, and thought we should try it. So we went last night, and oh man....we've been missing out!! The service was great - Brianna was super helpful in guiding us through the menu - and the food was outstanding!! We started with Arancino (which, because it's very Sicilian, I was surprised to see on the menu). We have eaten Arancino in a lot of places - including Italy - and this was some of the best we've ever had. I had crabcakes with collard greens and mac & cheese as sides, and the hubs had the meatloaf dish with greens on the side. My crabcakes were very good, and the greens were too. The mac & cheese was good too, but because I had my eye on dessert, I only ate a bite and handed it off to my husband to put into his "to go" box. As for his "to go" box....the meatloaf (on a pile of excellent mashed potatoes with gravy and a mess of fried onions on top) was a HUGE dish (yes, I tried it!). He ate a pretty good bit of it, but he also wanted dessert, so the rest went into the box to take home. So dessert....oh my....I got carrot cake, and it was soft and fresh, and had yummy cream cheese frosting, but it was not buried in frosting. It was outstanding. The husband is a big fan of peanut butter and got the peanut butter pie. It's on a graham cracker crust, with a little layer of chocolate on the bottom, and a super yummy, creamy peanut butter filling. Outstanding!! Now we have decided we have found our favorite restaurant in Dayton, and can't wait to go back to try more of the extensive menu! Give it a try! read more

The food was excellent. I had the fried catfish and my husband had the ribeye steak. Both were terrific and cooked to perfection. The mashed potatoes were yummy, not traditional...(think, thick mashed red potatoes) very good! The collard greens are to-die-for. No additional pepper sauce or seasoning needed. Service was excellent. Server was nice, informative and answered all of our questions enthusiastically. The reason for 4 stars is this: When we left, one of the kitchen staff employees was on the front porch smoking! It's the only was for customers to leave and we had to walk right by him. Sorry, but that's just disgusting. Not a deal breaker. We will go back. But definitely a turn off! read more
