6/29/18 High Wire Trio w/ Luques Curtis on bass and Ulysses Owens, Jr. on drums exploring the music of legendary pianist, Erroll Garner.

Scullers has been around for almost 3 decades, and over the years it has hosted many great artists such as Ben E. King, Wynton Marsalis, and Quincy Jones. It continues to bring in great musicians, and from time to time the shows are broadcast live on WGBH "Live From Scullers" featuring Eric Jackson, the Dean of Boston Jazz Radio. The night we went, we saw Christian Sands and The High Wire Trio performing the music of legendary pianist Erroll Garner, hosted by Mr. Jackson. Scullers has a very intimate setting, very old school. The tables are close together, and if you are there on a date, expect to share a table with another couple. My husband and I bought a dinner and show package. I'll be honest with you, dinner was just okay. However, the other benefits you get when purchasing this package do outweigh the mediocre food from Boathouse 400, which is located upstairs. The main benefit is (imho) you are guaranteed a table right in front of the stage, and the other benefit is complimentary parking instead of the standard $15 fee. You cannot be more intimate than sitting and enjoying the cool sound of jazz than being an arm's length away from the musicians. To say we had a fabulous time would be an understatement. Some of the reviewers have mentioned poor service. We thought otherwise. The server was always around when I needed another Old Fashioned. The reason why I'm giving this a 4-star is because the drink prices are a bit excessive. My husband had a couple of Manhattans and I had a couple of Old Fashioned, and our bar bill was $64 without tip yet. For 4 drinks, that's a bit ridiculous if you ask me. Anyway, I was able to discreetly video taped "My Funny Valentine" by having my iPhone on my lap and moving my legs from side to side in order to move the phone. Nobody even knew I was doing it. Not even my husband because he would've given me the stink eye. Anyway, they do allow videos & pictures (no flashes), but it's such a classy joint with a classy audience that you really should put that phone away. Lol. Enjoy! https://vimeo.com/277800268

I think I gave this place a 3 star review before because of cognitive dissonance: I like the acts that are brought in so in my review to friends afterwards I find myself saying I liked the experience because the players are so good. Unfortunately for Scullers, the jazz and the quality of the venue could not be more different. The blasted monolithic pillar in the middle of the room just gets on my nerves. They put 2 tables behind it at which no one will ever sit down. It also means that everyone who gets a frontal view of the set is crammed into one part of the room. I don't know how you get on that list, but it looks as though you have to either be over 40 years old or have a connection to the place. This is the 3rd time now that I've come and whisked to the WORST unoccupied seat in the room. The people responsible for seating are disorganized and constantly stressed or confused, and assume that I won't pipe up about how crummy my seat is. I get it: you want to save the good seats for people who may be coming in. But when I come in 5 minutes before showtime and I'm alone, it's pretty easy to squeeze me in someplace closer to the action than the back wall. I was feeling saucy tonight so I asked the ushers(?) if I could change seats. It was difficult to convince them that I wanted to move closer. I sat with 2 empty chairs on either sides of me the entire show. Still my view was less-than-optimal, but any seats that were worth their price were taken by friends of the club. Compound this with the fact that while my waitress, Kim, was overworked, she was pushy in getting me something to buy something pronto and didn't seem to want to be there. Kim, you did a fantastic job at serving: I just want to know you want to be here, too! Calling these people to try to find out who an artist is playing with took me 5 tries. The woman at the other end of the line was terse and seemed ready to get off the phone with me as soon as she could. Lastly, I'm surprised that there aren't discount student tickets for these sorts of events. Tickets are expensive, and broke college students aren't going to get a chance to see all of the great jazz that goes on here. 2 stars because my wine was great and the music is fantastic. Every time I come here, though, I'm reminded why I'm rarely here.

I've heard good music.. in malls, alleyways (passing by.. not innn annn alleyway), classrooms, clubs, subways, theaters, outdoor ampitheaters, in my head, and lo and behold.. I can add "conference-esque rooms in a hotel" to that list. Oh Scullers. To get into the proper mood, I suggest going as late as possible if you don't mind sitting wherever (as long as you've already purchased tickets). I think just walking into the room and seeing the set up would be a complete turn off. The seats in front of the stage are pretty close together and set up in 2s in front of small round cafe tables. There are also some high top tables/chairs that border the room. In the end, I actually didn't really mind the close seats because well.. if I were in the pit at a concert the closeness would be the same. At least with Scullers, my legs weren't being knee'd and they didn't feel like they were about to give up at the end of the night. Anyway, music is intimate so get ready to snuggle. As far as the food goes, I've had both the meatloaf and the po boy crab sliders. I liked the crab ones better. They were both really good and light but order something else if you're looking for some dinner. They were definitely a good complement to the beer that I was drinking.. even though I didn't know what I was drinking.. haha I had ordered one beer but didn't like it.. so I traded it with Shaina G... then when I went to order another.. it was a totally different shade. But, ya know. I'm a beer drinker and it was fine. Plus I didn't want to make a scene during the show and our waiter was totally hustling and working the room in the most suave, efficient way. When it comes down to it.. if musicians are okay with this venue.. and they come back year after year in all their amazingness.. Scullers must be doing something right. To me, when I'm listening to good music I kind of forget about everything around me.. so conference room or not.. they got the acoustics and musicians to keep me coming back for more. PS - Sign up for their mailing list. Currently, they're running a "recession" promotion, where they give out free tickets every month! I believe you can get up to 4 tickets per show. Gotta gotta love Scullers. I'm actually writing a letter to the manager when I get home to thank her. I was able to see the Heath Brothers (jazz musicians that have been in the biz for 60 years) for FREE this weekend. WORD.

The restaurant is located on the second level of the Doubletree Guest Suites. The menu includes appetizers, salads and soups, sandwiches, and main entrees. I ate here two nights in a row since I didn't have time to take the complimentary shuttle to the other parts of Boston. The food was okay. I received a basket of bread, 1 wheat roll and 1 onion roll. The roll was warm, but it was extremely crunchy. They must have been in the warmer too long. On the first night, I had Lobster Macaroni and Cheese ($26). The dish was pretty good. There were three different cheeses and lots of lobster chunks throughout the dish. The dish used fuscili pasta. I also ordered a side of winter vegetables - carrots, rutabaga, and brussels sprouts ($5). On the second day, I ordered a Seafood Crusted Seared Filet of Salmon ($26). The dish came with saffron rice, 2 stalks of broccolini, and Newburg cream sauce. I didn't like this dish too much. The seafood crust didn't compliment the salmon. I'm not sure what the Newburg cream sauce was made out of, but it didn't have much flavor. The salmon was a bit overcooked too. The service on both days was good! The waitress was very kind.

A really nice intimate jazz club up on the second floor the double tree! Drink portions were friendly as well as the server! Great setting, except the seating plan can make it hard to see the stage depending on how many people you have sitting in front of you. Perhaps a table up the front or a high table at the back would be best. Come here 11/13/14 to watch Yoko Miwa, amazing and talented jazz pianist who plays here annually with her trio.

Went to Scullers Jazz Club on a weeknight to see a pretty famous act. It was my first time at a Jazz Club, so I can't compare Scullers to anything else. But, it was a really fun time. The staff were very friendly and helpful. As for the ambiance of the place, the room was packed, but was still comfortable. As a side note, most of the audience were middle aged and older. My group consisted of some young adolescents who don't listen to jazz music, not to mention non-vocal musicians. But even they enjoyed the experience. We were nodding our heads along and silently playing our air instruments along with the band (which did annoy one guest who was sitting stiffly), but no harm was done. In the end, their experience at Scullers Jazz helped them develop an appreciation for jazz music. We didn't get the dinner/concert package, so I can't comment on the food. But for great music and a relaxing evening outside of Boston, it was totally worth the price. Validated parking in the hotel for the concert is $10. Not too bad.

All of our guests raved about how great they were. They play both traditional jazz music and a mix of some popular jazz & Latin hits (Frank Sinatra, etc). If you're looking for Sir Mixalot and some Rihanna, you'll have to look elsewhere because these guys have class! First off, Bob was incredibly great to work with. I probably only sent 2-3 emails and a couple phone calls at most about a year out, and a week before the wedding - just indicating what songs we wanted and to confirm some deposits and details. We are pretty much "roll with it" people and gave them the reigns on this one, they showed up and played exactly what we had hoped for. They had a flute and keyboard for our outdoor ceremony with lovely classical music and were perfectly on cue. They even took a lot of requests for songs from our guests during the reception (except for Portuguese music, haha! What did you expect, Auntie-in-law??). Our guests were certainly up and dancing all evening. Also, they didn't have a song in their repertoire (we chose a Chuck Berry song for our first dance) and they actually learned it for us! Lastly, the price was very exceptionally reasonable for the quality, their presentation and their talent. Why need a DJ when you can get such sophistication from live musicians? Highly, highly recommend for your wedding. Thanks, Bob Sabourin & Jazz in the Air!!

Salmon was dry and bland wish it was paired with a sauce and side dish but it was a big portion of just rice and fish. The BEST dish was the creole pasta and the two piece. It's classy and fun setting the scene for a nice vibe. service was nice but slow, we needed to flag down our waiter a couple times so we could order food. Some of the things we ordered were the fried catfish nuggets, braised oxtails, Mac and cheese and steak frites. Fried catfish bites were okay, the oxtail dish was tender but too sweet, Mac and cheese was standard and the steak was dry. I never mind paying top dollar for amazing dishes but these weren't it for us. Drinks were good though and the music was great. I'd suggest coming just to listen to a great live band and a nightcap.
