I originally got clued into them because they allow dogs in a few rooms and I don't overnight without mine. We came out for the day in 2014 because I hadn't found any pet ok accommodations , then I got the recommendation for the yew. So the next summer we came out and stayed overnight, and it was this lovely basic but not Maine camp experience. We had electricity and Wi-Fi , which on this narrow gravel roaded island isn't a given, a shared bathroom, and conversations at breakfast that were opening my pov to ones I hadn't considered. It's a beautiful campus, featured on many well known plein air paintings and prints. I often stay in the room by the laundry line that is well represented in many beautiful pieces of art. I came out this last August with 2 missions. My soul dog who had absolutely loved this campus, died in January, and I came to spread some of her ashes. In the interim, I had been gifted a new dog, who continues to be a challenge. I wanted to introduce her to people who had loved her predecessor, and introduce her to this wonderful place.

The view from the upper porch is of the whole town and is beautiful. Barbara couldn't be any sweeter--great to talk to over a cup of tea and able to take care of any request. The sink has a window over it so you can watch the sun set while doing the supper dishes. You can't go wrong here.

Cons: street parking only, which can be an issue, and the noise level from guests in adjoining rooms. Sadly I think we were next to the family room, and the party next door had unruly kids that were loud and we heard lots of running, banging and noise, which was frustrating, especially since it is in an otherwise quiet/secluded area and has a very upscale boutique feel which wouldn't seem to attract larger groups. I couldn't tell if they were next to/above us/or both. It was annoying. The neighborhood was cute and some new businesses/food/coffee restos, But I felt it was a tad overpriced at $345/nite once you included the $75 cleaning fee and tax, especially since it's pretty far from downtown. However we realized Portland is actually very VERY expensive!

This summer my mother & I decided to take my 90yr old grandmother, who is wheelchair bound, away for a mini- vacation. From the moment we arrived, I was blown away at how handicap accessible Steve & Sherri had made our cabin (12 A&B). Steve came right outside, got wheelchair chair ramps for us, had already put up handicap handles in the shower and on the toilet. Each cabin I've been in, is always so clean. So neat. They have cute signs up that make them feel "homey". And my Gram especially liked the hanging plant in front of our cabin. Me & my entire family HIGHLY recommend this getaway!!!

Only briefly interacted with the owner Steve, but everything went smoothly. The house itself was perfect for the two of us, the bed was comfy and the AC was strong enough.

I rented this cottage on Chebeague Island in Maine for 9 nights in September 2009 for a Labor Day…read morefamily party followed by a working vacation. The property was listed on the Home Away vacation rental site as having broadband and wireless internet and cable TV as a cottage amenities. There were several problems upon our arrival. The house smelled very strongly of mold. The bedding was threadbare, and also smelled strongly of mold, as did the towels, causing problems for those guests with asthma and allergies. There was no internet access of any kind. There was one (sporadically available) TV channel. The vehicle provided for an extra $200 fee stalled repeatedly. In addition, the owner called me during my stay asking me to water the grounds, which I found rather surprising! With no internet access or reliable transportation, I was forced return home 5 days early. I contacted the owner to discuss her deceptive advertisement on Home Away, and to ask for a partial refund to compensate for the lack of internet connectivity and a reliable vehicle. She promised to "review the situation" and get back to me. However, I have not heard from her since. I have not received a refund, and she has not returned my $200 security deposit. She also removed her original advertisement from the Home Away site, and they are currently investigating my complaint. Needless to say, I don't recommend this rental! Nice view, that's about it.

Right by the ocean in Scarborough, you can hear the waves as you go to sleep. The beach is available for walking just over the sand dunes, and you can still find an occasional sand dollar. Orchard Beach is also lovely, a quick walk or drive takes you to Bayley's lobster pound, pick up a lobster they will steam it and crack it, and eat it on the porch. Walking in here you can feel the tension wash off. The fireplace has a burns quote on it, and there is a scrabble set and other board games if you have had enough of watching the Atlantic Ocean out the windows. There are no televisions, there is no wi-fi, The proprietor makes coffee in the morning. And she will loan you lobster forks and crackers if you forget to get your lobsters cracked at the pound.

Very limited electrical outlets for charging multiple devices. Limited, tight parking spaces. Don't be late for the 8:30 AM (sharp) breakfast or it may be cold or gone.
