I hadn't been here in a couple years but recently stopped by after a show at Wise Guys. They don't have a typical cocktail menu, rather they have you describe the type of cocktail you'd like with a couple words, and they make a custom cocktail based on your description. I personally would love a cocktail menu, but my friend enjoyed her savory gin cocktail she ordered. They also have a hot dog and veggie dog menu. There was one bartender when we were there and she was great. I just got a glass of wine and it was tasty and reasonably priced. read more

Cute little bar on the second floor of the gateway with limited seating. Drinks only, no food. This is a One bartender establishment with a records/turntable situation for music. The service was polite, the mixology was not good. We provided a description of our palate and gave the bartender carte blanche for four drinks (two rounds). Everything tasted tart and sour - the champagne cocktail (sour), the gin cocktail (sour), the cosmopolitan (bitter and sour). I did not enjoy any of them. If you can't execute a classic, that is a major fail bc cocktails are literally the purpose of this establishment. Would not return on my own, but could be convinced to try it again if somebody insisted and a different bartender was working. read more

I like the vibe of Seabird; it's pretty small, a little cozy and I liked the drink they gave me! The only thing that I'm critical of is their claim to music-based drinks. They have a thing where you can name any album and they'll make the drink based off the vibe of that album! I won't go into the quality of that because music is objective (plus I liked the drink I got anyway). However, when they said they could make any drink, I gave them a pretty popular 2000's album and they said "what is that?". I explained the artist and they still said they never listened to it. They were nice to be clear, idk if they should change the album-drink rule to a genre? Or hire me, that works too. read more

This is such an intimate and cool bar. The decor is engaging but subtle, especially the vinyl speaker bar they have going on. They played excellent records the whole time. It is a small bar, so it feels intimate. The staff were super attentive and kind. The bartender Kacie took my "flavor profile" and made me an off-menu drink based on that, which was delicious. I was so impressed by her ability to do that, and grateful as nothing else on the menu really struck me at the time. My first drink was the Verde and it was delicious- herby, classy, and great for sipping. My partner loved the Made In Mexico, which he described as a "subtle margarita." Having visited the original location in Draper and digging the concept there, I was excited to see the new spot open in The Gateway and found myself nearby for an unexpected visit shortly after opening. If you've read my other review, you'll know that I'm a teetotaler so really, you should take this with a grain of salt, and not a grain alcohol as I don't drink the latter. But I do love to support local businesses and there are many non-drinkers in this world and in this state, and I hope there's more support for all businesses; let a dry reviewer's experience guide your visit. I'm all about going in and talking to the bartenders, and I had a couple of fun ones who engaged me in conversation. It's always interesting when I say I want a drink without any spirits. I wish I would have thrown down the challenge a little bit, but instead we just ordered a couple of ginger beers and went out to the patio. I love a good patio, and on this night, a rainstorm had just finished coming through and it was gorgeous. Big menacing clouds leaving over the horizon, early summer sun returning, and there was an event down at the Gateway plaza and live music and lots of people. I felt like some kind of medieval Duke looking out over the kingdom. The place is tiny, the patio is small, and in winter there will only be a few seats inside. But I love that coziness. I love the atmosphere, the branding, the decor, and the vibe. I like to have a conversation, though, so if you're looking for a divey loud mess, look elsewhere. This is classy but way below pretentious. It's where you go before or after a date when you care to get to know the person. There's always parking down below in the garage, and it's a convenient hop away from a growing number of restaurants or other drink options. It fits a nice niche of craft cocktails in downtown. read more

Absolute buzzkill. On a recent trip home, my partner and I met up with my parents and a couple friends at this bar before seeing a show at the depot. My partner had been wanting to try out this cute new SLC spot. The bartender was very unwelcoming and passive aggressive. Everything we said or did was an inconvenience. Literally ordering a drink seemed to piss them off. With only 4 other people in the bar, it took way too long to get my dads cocktail. Cocktails are crafted nicely, beer selection was great, but gosh are the bartenders weird. The incessant ID checks are done in a manner that is frankly rude. I understand there are Mormons trying to shut down bars and stuff by fining people for not checking ID's, but that shouldn't get in the way you handle your customers. There was a major conference in the area and the bartenders treated us like a nuisance. Sorry for bringing tons of business to your bar... I guess you don't like tips or something? Each drink was separately closed out even though we all were staying for multiple drinks. When I asked why it was closed out the bartender said, "maybe it's for the best" what he hell does that mean? I was not obnoxious and ordered a single beer? They also threw my friend out who looks about 45 since his ID expires a week ago... let's use some common sense here. Refusing service is one thing but kick him out? The night I was there it was a bit chilly so we were seeking a warmer place. The bartender placed the chair near the open patio as huge gusts of cold wind blew into the bar and made everyone cold and their little hipster lights swing back and forth violently. This place is cool and I like the chill vinyl vibes but if you are bring more than 2 friends with you, you will treated as a threat. read more

So the marketing and social media for this place is in point. But it was VERY misleading. It's a tiny place, and they have a tiny selection of alcohol- nothing on tap or any beer selections, and very overpriced. It seems like a place that someone put together really quick without doing research. We came in on a Friday night, and the bartenders were super weird. We asked for suggestions (that's the bartenders job- to suggest what we should have, especially if it was our first visit.), and the guy serving us like had no idea what to suggest... it was so weird. Then we asked him to make us a shot that was whiskey based, and instead of going for it, he proceeded to replace the trash bag on the garbage can without gloves, before he made our drink. (First of all unsanitary, and second of all- you are making us wait). I don't think an of these guys running the place have ever been to an actual bar. It's kind of a joke. read more
