My fellow veteran buddy and I stopped by the IHOP on Hwy 74 in Rockingham around 1:30 PM to discuss some upcoming events. We had a really bad experience here in the past, but one of the servers, Bayleigh, was the sole reason we decided to give it another shot. Coincidentally, Bayleigh ended up being our server again today. Even though the restaurant was short-staffed--a cook actually had to seat us because he was waiting on the next shift--Bayleigh willingly stayed past her shift just to take care of us because she recognized us. Her dedication and customer service were truly 10/10. Unfortunately, the kitchen didn't match her effort: The Food Quality: They were out of ingredients for my original sandwich choice, so I went with the bacon, avocado, chicken sandwich on whole grain toast. My buddy ordered the beef Philly. Both came with onion rings, and I got a side of fries. Kitchen Mistakes: My sandwich was initially brought out missing the avocado, but Bayleigh caught it right away and had the kitchen fix it. When it came back, the chicken looked burnt, and the toast was so dry, hard, and over-toasted that it was literally falling apart in my hands--I had to smash the avocado just to bind the sandwich together. Inedible Saltiness: Worst of all, both of our sandwiches were so brutally salty it tasted like the lid fell off the shaker and dumped right onto the food. Neither of us could finish our meals. We ended up just drinking our drinks, paying, and leaving. Bayleigh apologized sincerely for the kitchen's mistakes, and she was easily the best part of the entire visit. The chicken and dumplings were 80% broth, 15% disappointment, and 5% actual food. The broccoli tasted like someone waved salt at it from across the room, and the corn tasted like someone dumped the whole shaker on it just for fun. For $11.01, we basically paid to borrow the idea of a meal. Maybe dining in is better.

When did they start offering a menu of things you'd find at the other fast food spots that don't specialize in burgers or chicken? I thought I had walked into a different place. All I could see was the menu of nachos, tacos, burritos, quesadillas and the like. Moreover, to make sure I became a victim of the marketing, that half of the menu had brighter colors and bigger pictures. Pavlov had the right idea, I guess. I should have stuck with the coke, but was intrigued enough to get a small order of the poppers. They aren't the half jalapeno stuffed with cheese and deep-fried though, or they would have been if you didn't first take away the half jalapeno and then chop it into small pieces, mix it with cheese and deep-fry that. It comes with ranch dressing. Not healthy, but still okay. Fortunately, it wasn't enough to get me to start craving fast food, but was an interesting change of pace. When I walked out it was then I noticed the Hardee's sign had "Red Burrito" under it. There's something else I didn't know, a fast food place creating a sub-specialty fast food place. Hard to be a marketing victim when you aren't paying attention to it. So while I wasn't manipulated when I walked in, I was by the time I walked out. Next time, I'll stop at a gas station. About 7 min go by and the manager then comes back, parks her car, and walks in. Still claims their absolutely nothing she can do to fix this situation. Suddenly what appeared to be a customer dressed in nurses scrubs walks behind the counter and joins the manager to add to the already disasterius service. She asked for my phone walks completely out of my line of sight and comes back with a receipt that looks like a refund, but she was being politely rude. She says have a great day! I try to ask another question and get the same answer, have a nice day. Today I learned that the woman in nurse scubs was the daytime manager. I guess you have to be a manager to eat at this Hardee's. The service was quite hostile, while inside I notice that the kitchen was scrubbing the floors and had a lot of equipment pulled out from the walls. It's 8pm. This isn't even the right way to be treating customers or employees. The only improvement that could be made is for the Hardee's corporate office to come in and audit them. This restaurant gave me the absolute worst service I've ever recived iny life. They suck really bad.
