Alright, so I'm gonna write about my two experiences and let you decide: #1 Okay, we love to celebrate Mistress' Valentine's (this means celebrating on any other day but Valentine's day-- usually reserved for spouses/significant others etc)-- BECAUSE hello, we hate crowds, I mean who doesn't? Secondly, the inflated prices, mediocre food, feeling rushed etc. On a colleague's recommendation (also a local), we came in the day before V-day and ordered the Seafood Mariscada-- which is this huge pot of seafood in this yummy tomato sauce/broth. Served up w/ a side of buttery rice and I was in heaven! That dish alone is worth coming back here for. The Husband (TH) ordered the Tomahawk at Market Price. Yea we didn't bother asking the cost, and we proceeded to stuff our gluttonous selves. The Tomahawk came in this large platter, really could be meant for 2-3 people, with these potato chips (I didn't care for), rice, a mixed salad and this gi-normous rib eye with the rib still attached. We did the "guess the bill" game towards the end and priced it at $155, cause years of city living has done that to us, and SO pleasantly surprised that platter was just $55?! Score! Great service. Took a ton of leftovers home. Win-win #2 After our amazing first experience, we told some friends about this place and about the awesome Tomahawk price. We all decided to come here for a nice little Saturday dinner. We started with some garlic shrimp. It was pretty good. I side-eyed some people's "peel and eat shrimp" and looks like I'll need to get that next time. TH and I split the Tomahawk, our friend ordered the Tomahawk as well, and our other friend ordered the crab stuffed lobster. She was warned by the waiter that the lobster would be "small". Out came the Tomahawks. Our friend only likes his steaks well-done, yah go figure, and that thing came out bloodier than I would've even liked. He ate the outside edges, trimmed the rest of the meat and packed it up to go. Ours tasted alright, definitely not as good as the first time. Friend also said lobster was good but didn't like the stuffed crab, she barely ate it. It was a Saturday night and the place was jam packed, as in our table was practically in the middle of the aisle. People really love this place and we don't blame them. Anyhow, the bill came and the Tomahawks were $80 this time! So beware that it does fluctuate and apparently, quite significantly. Still great service, we'd definitely come back for their seafood. I'd average out my experience to be about a 3.5-3.8 stars. read more

The food is terrific. Five stars for the food. The points off are for gouging the customer. Lots of people complain about the credit card reader that has been broken for years. And rightly so. If you're cash only, don't give people their bill in an American Express envelope. The wine list only lists bottles. No prices listed for wines by the glass or carafes. A big issue is that many of the dishes are for 2 people, 4, or even more, but none of this is explained on the menu. Not only doesn't the waiter alert you to this, he brought over meat pies and asked if we wanted, which were not going to be included. As it was, we ordered way too much food. Our waiter knew little about the daily specials--and many of the daily specials turned out not to be available, including the wine of the day. Service was OK at best, and requiring a mandatory 20% tip for 2 people suggests the waiter knows he doesn't have to try very hard. (He tried to take away a wine glass that still had wine in it and the bread dish when I still had bread in my hand.) read more

Have been going to this place for almost 17yrs, at least twice a month. Food is always great. Most of waiters know us by our first names & likewise the 2 of the 3 owners. Was there last week and for the first time in 7 monthe & decided to sit on one their street front outdoor table due to the pandemic. (Normally the charm is to sit around the indoor bar). Decided to splurge a little & only after we finished dinner we got the unruly hint that they were not accepting Credit Cards which is always a stinker. Then realized there were notices inadvertently posted that the Credit card machine was not working. After getting hold of cash, we got the typical hand written and added check. What was not typical was the addition of tax to bill (something which was not seen in 17 years because it was already added to the food prices) in addition there was a 23% gratuity added. Only after I questioned it , it was taken out. This was done even though were only 2 & without any notice on the menus or elsewhere. I then asked them if the CC machine was really out & was told we take Credit Cards on some days & on some we don't, seriously I'm not kidding. To the owners, you have obviously lost very faithful clients who have recommended your restaurant to hundreds of friends. We felt comfortable and welcome, but with this experience we feel hustled and betrayed for our patronage over the years. Yes the pandemic has changed the restaurant culture, but not being transparent is inexcusable. Getting the feel that you were hustled in restaurant is surely unappetizing . read more

Right to the point: The food here is outrageously good and the service is impeccable. They (like most) are a little pricey however ease keep in mind that the plates are served family style so it's easily shared. If you're eating you're not sharing count on having enough leftovers for at least two other meals. I love this place! read more

My go to seafood spot and definitely top 3 around this area. I know the area well since my dad had a fish market on Monroe st, the block over from Seabra. I can't keep count of how many times I have been here. Around 2005 when I first met my wife, this was a go to spot. Sit around their big bar with some front tables and seating in the back. I love the bar side tables facing the street. We started with an octopus salad and clams in garlic sauce. Both appetizers were really good. I have always loved their octopus salad and it hasn't changed. The clams and bread went fast with that garlic sauce. Wow Really good!!! The steak Portuguese style is still well made, with a nice au jus, all sitting in a clay dish. My sister this day had the smaller version called a bitoque, which has the salted ham and egg layered on a smaller size steak. The portion size is still very generous and it just depends on the person's appetite. I had the surf and turf, which was amazing in flavor. Not the prettiest cut of filet mignon but seasoned and cooked how I like it. The filet mignon looked to be the end piece of the loin butterflied open then stacked. Not a big deal! The lobster tail was a mountain of meat just waiting to be ripped off the shell. The dipping sauce is outrageous, it has a nice garlic taste with a little spice. I believe it's the same sauce they offer with the gambas, that came on my wife's dish. I remember the gambas (giant tiger prawns) being just as big and flavorful looking. Of course she was having that and not sharing!! I don't blame her lol. Everyone working here does speak broken English and understand Portuguese better. There were only a handful of tables occupied in the front, and the entire backroom was completely empty. Started off at the bar and they automatically put some fried baby octopus on a small place en gratis. Nice! They do have a full bar, but beware that some of the prices are really off the chart on certain spirits. I'm talking $35 for a pour of Macallan 12. Really!? The garlic shrimp and octopus salad were extremely fresh and neither were overcooked. Seasoning was fantastic as well. Wish that garlic shrimp came with a bit more sauce for dipping. The main entree portion was large, but fair considering the price tag. Had the bacalhau grelhado, which is a traditional Portuguese grilled codfish. It came topped with onion and olives, but the taste was too salty. I struggled with it the entire way... The other people in the group also ordered paella and grouper. Paella was massive and the portion was probably good enough for two or even three people to share. The grouper looked better than my cod and I was actually a bit jealous... The wait staff was very courteous and checked in often enough without being disruptive. Service was fast enough to get us started and very relaxed while we ate. We didn't feel rushed at all. Came with a group of 5 and ordered the octopus appetizer and the Mariscada for 4. We were 5 adn we ate and ate and ate. . . . .and ate. The portuguese sure know how to make sea food. We paid 30 buck per person with at least 3 beers each. (I recommend the dark beer) I wish i was able to leave the city once a week just to go to Newark. Worth the trip. read more

Recently visited this restaurant after a covid. The first time I ate here the food was excellent, very well seasoned and flavourful and I was waiting to go back. This visit it seemed things went downhill. The seafood was not as flavourful, the sauce seemed a bit bland. We ordered the garlic grilled shrimp, the frutos do mar na cataplana, veal cutlet and chicken in garlic and white sauce. The food (especially the shrimp and seafood dishes) were average. We also ordered a sangria jug ($40) and there was a cockroach in the glass! I was expecting them to take the price off the bill but they just offered a replacement glass of sangria (for the contaminated pitcher). We were almost done with dinner by then so we turned down the offer. But first the server argued it was a mosquito (as if that was any better) then I showed him a glass where a fruit fly type thing did drown itself (so he could compare). It was a strange experience. We had the shareable seafood dish for four. Comes with rice and Spanish fries. Jumbo shrimp lobster clams muscles fish!! The staff was super friendly and attentive! Make sure to give them a good tip! I stopped in here with a friend - tried it out not knowing but read reviews. Going inside was a nightmare, line out the door and so much traffic inside it was ridiculous. We were thankful the bartender found us a seat at the bar which was delightful. If not the wait would've been a good 45-50 minute wait. Everyone there was very friendly I must say. The staff were very welcoming and the customers were very social- the environment was quiet comfortable. The food was amazing. I ordered the veal and my gf ordered the surf n turf. The prices were - the prices. I can't say cheap because it wasn't, but then again a lot of the food was seafood so that explains pricing by itself. I'd have to say overall rating a 4 star. I'd like to give 4.5 but not an option. The tightness of the place with the congestion is what messed up the experience a bit. Had dinner here tonight. We will NOT return nor recommend this establishment. The waiter bring over an appetizer we didn't order and told us it's complementary. We were seated fast which was great but we were seated very tightly next to a couple. The tables are so close together you're practically eating with the people next to you. They brought bread and 3 little fish stick things which we didn't order but thought was complimentary. We ordered two dishes. It took forever for them to come and when they came we were very very disappointed. It was full of small shrimps, small clams and a small lobster with barely any meat in it. When the check came they charged us 6 DOLLARS for water and made us pay for the fish sticks which we didn't order. Long story short I DO NOT RECOMMEND coming here. read more

My parents dined here a few days after Thanksgiving, and loved the grilled octopus so much that they wanted to return for my father's birthday (in December). I made a reservation two weeks prior to our dinner for a party of 20. When I made the reservation they stressed that we should promptly be there at 7 PM for our reservation. The day of our dinner no one called me to confirm my reservation. Since we were such a large party, I called the restaurant myself at 5:30 PM to confirm our reservation. They told me that we were set for 7 PM, and again to please be on time. No problem. At 6:28 PM, I received a call from the restaurant stating that my family's reservation would be pushed to 7:30-7:40 PM since another party had come late. I was so shocked that they called a half an hour before our reservation to tell me this, I didn't even know what to say. I quickly rushed to call all of my family to tell them the change of plans but, of course, everyone was already on their way, it was 30 mins shy of our reservation time! We waited until almost 8 PM to be seated, the majority of us crammed in the hallway of the restaurant, and a few of my family members waited in their car. I was SO upset about what transpired. This was for my father's birthday and the restaurant made no effort to fix this problem. Management never even came to speak to me to rectify the situation. Why was my family punished for another reservation arriving late?! We were all on time as they had asked us to be. If another party had arrived late, then they should have been the one's to wait for their table - not us. If the restaurant is worried about losing money, they should hold credit cards on file for reservations. Plenty of restaurants do this to ensure that their patrons' reservations are honored, and customers leave happy. Our bill was over $1,600 -- to wait over an hour for a RESERVED table, for mediocre food. (My mother said that the dish they had returned for definitely was not cooked in the same manner.) There are plenty of Portuguese restaurants in the Ironbound that are just as good, if not, better than this place. And hopefully, they'll do a better of job of honoring your reservation. We were invited here by my brother in law. Party of 11 made reservations for 7pm, yet still had to wait another 10-15 minutes to be seated. On a Sunday evening the place was packed. We ordered 4 Paellas, and 3 hamburgers for the kids. The hamburgers and fries came out first. For $10, the burgers were very small, no mayo or any sauce with it... you're better off going to Burger King or McDonald's. Once our order was put in, we never saw our water until the food arrived. Then he disappeared again. The seafood Paellas took more than an hour to be served, and all the seafood smelt and tasted very fishy . It seemed like the chefs didn't know how to clean the seafood. Even the shrimp wasn't cleaned. I almost threw up when the food arrived. The rice at least tasted fine. Very disappointed in the service here and the quality of the food. My husband and I we travel around during Christmas and we stop at Newark to spend the night there before we hit to New York City it's about 12 miles away from the city . We came in late that night and couldn't find anything around to eat and so I found Seabra at the end, not too far from where we were at maybe 15 minutes drive, it was worth the drive if that is far for some people lol They have plenty parking space across from the restaurant, welcome atmosphere, the space were tight but felt very warm & cozy, food were delicious! and the service was wonderful! We went there last Sunday (January 26) for lunch. We drove all the way down from Waretown to experience their famous Portuguese recipe. We have no complaints about their food they were awesome and delicious. What frustrates us was the service. When The server#supervisor#manager accidentally hit the wine glass while pouring the water for my husband. The broken pieces of the glass went to our plates & dishes. Too bad that we didnt hear any apologies from him neither to mend the issue. And when we were paying the bill, he wanted us to pay everything. Where in fact, we only wanted him to remove fish from our bill. After we settled everything, the waiter#supervisor#manager comment was "YOU ARE VERY MUCH WELCOME TO GO OTHER RESTAURANT ". This is the most unpleasant and uncourteous experienced we have at SEABRAS Hope this will help to call the owner's attention to train better staff. read more
