We had a good meal here! The sushi was fresh and all of the various items we ordeees were delicious. Our only non- favorable comment has to do with the service. We were a party of 12 and ordered quite a few rolls, 2 rolls didn't come out so after about 25 minutes we asked about them and we were told they were out of the ingredients to make the rolls. I really wish someone would have told us earlier especially because my wife was Hangry at this point and needed a snickers. Overall our party was pleased with the food and fully understanding that the suspect service (had to ask for empty plates be removed, no water refills, Etc.) may be a rarity I would say the food is worth the trip if you are in the area. read more

Really weird vibe, the food is great but the severs don't have any kind of uniform so you can hardly tell who your waiter is. I feel like it's a very unprofessional kind if vibe and while I understand wanting to have a comfortable environment for employees but it just feels unprofessional.Also, the customer experience is very strange, I didn't feel welcome They wait until you're almost done finishing your food and about to leave then come try to give refills. We had to get our own napkins that looked like they came from the restroom. And then they expect a tip when they gave horrible service.When it came time to pay, we left a cash tip for our server. When she noticed the cash tip, she counted it in front of us, visibly upset, and then began speaking in her language in a clearly frustrated tone. One of the few places open on New Year's Day. Wanted a decent meal before I flew out. I was able to get seated right away as got there at 5:30pm and was solo. Lot of big groups with families. The server was friendly but limited with his English so wasn't able to make any recommendations. I opted for the chirashi to start the new year with a healthy meal. It came with miso soup which I found salty. The salad was mediocre with a ranch dressing. I think the fish was frozen and not as fresh. Walked in and tall man greeted us and seated us. Food was pretty good but the staff was the crazy part. We were the only people in the restaurant and there were about 4 staff members visible. Our waiter started to clean the store and sang Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance," on the top of his lungs while we ate and then when he noticed I had finished my plate he commented on how fast I ate...I then told him it was because I was hungry and it was all we had eaten that day and how it would be our dinner...interaction was weird but I always eat fast so I just shrugged it off. Also asked us if we needed forks when he gave us chopsticks and when we said "no thank you," he said "oh wow so you know how to use them?" Cause we are white. We flew in on a late night flight and were looking for a place to grab a bite to eat. We found Sean's and saw that they were open late. Wonderful! The restaurant is located in a shopping strip mall and nothing fancy. We walked right in and they let us sit anywhere. The seats are really hard so don't flop down! The menu is pretty extensive and has a lot of options for everyone! The prices range anywhere from $12- $20 a roll and the appetizers are around $14. The weird thing is that they have a sign in the door that you are allowed to bring in your own beer! Love it! Good to know for another time but I was hoping for saki at least. We ordered about four different dishes: Poke Stuffed Jalepeno with tuna appetizer And two deep fried rolls. The cooked roll had melted cream cheese in it and the texture threw me off. The salmon was ok and the tuna in the second roll had a texture of cat food.... Sorry!!! I guess I'll stick to raw rolls next time! Would not recommend! We called and asked when their last seating was and were told 10:30, with the restaurant closing at 11pm. We arrived at 10:25 and ordered before 10:30pm. The fish was subpar, the flavor was off, and we had to ask for wasabi and ginger. We couldn't even stomach finishing our food. If you don't want to seat people at 10:30 then just say so on the phone and we won't come. However, I would not recommend this restaurant based on the food alone. I was visiting Kona for a weekend, and my coworker recommended Sean's Kitchen for dinner. It was a rainy evening and I couldn't find the restaurant at first. Located in a strip mall in Kailua-Kona, the restaurant looks kinda dark from the exterior (I thought that it was closed). When I peeked in, the interior of the restaurant was dark (kinda like a sports bar), but it was definitely a sit-down restaurant, and there were a good amount of diners inside. I was expecting a local braddah (named Sean) cooking behind a counter and local sistahs waiting the tables. It was more like an L&L that was methodically run like a better Chinese restaurant. We were told to sit wherever we wanted, so we picked a booth further from the main entrance, and away from the service counter. Our server (a young girl, very polite) brought our waters and menus. I was surprised to see a variety of entrees to choose from and even sushi rolls. This place is kinda eclectic ---- local, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, American food choices. I ordered the 3 choice combo with chicken teriyaki, assorted tempura and California rolls. It looked like they had several cooks working in the kitchen, and our entrees came out quickly. I didn't expect the portions to be as generous as they were. I was definitely stuffed after finishing my entree. Haha. I was generally satisfied with the food and prices. If I don't feel like driving all the way out to Teshima's, I think that I'd go back to Sean's Kitchen if I'm staying in Kailua-Kona. read more

Never thought I'd find a place in Kona that opens till 11 pm. Plus, the wife wanted ramen or udon and we weren't too familiar with places in Kailua Kona. Thank goodness for Google! I had a Chirashi bowl and my wife had a tempura udon with a side of gyoza. My wife loved the udon and the gyoza was a fried version which was exceptionally tasty. The fish on the Chirashi bowl tasted fresh but the rice I felt needed more sushi seasoning. Otherwise, it was a good meal altogether. Quite affordable too. Staff was very friendly...and very patient! We were waiting for our grandson too all the way from Waikoloa...and it was raining! Loved the tavern like atmosphere of the place. My wife tends to judge places by how many people eat there. Because when we got there at 8 pm, was only us and another couple. BUT as the night went on, more people started trickling in until the place got filled up, along with others coming to pick up take out. And it was a Sunday night! I guess you can't judge a book by its cover. At least we got the place locked in for late night grinds if and when we ever return to visit the Big Island again. read more

Decent Japanese food in Kona. We stopped by earlier today for lunch and were seated right away. We ordered an assortment of our Japanese favorites - sushi, soup, bento box, etc. Food arrived quickly, except the seafood udon noodle soup, which took a while longer. We annihilated most of our food, as we were hungry after the long two hour drive over the saddle road from Hilo. My favorites were the salmon nigiri (oh so tender and fresh) and the crunchy California roll. Service was friendly and efficient. Clean toilets - outside the restaurant but close by. I received a mailer menu before coming, so I had expected Sean to be a local braddah (maybe even a fisherman given all the sushi offerings), but that was not the case. We ordered chicken karaage and gyoza for starters, which came right away. Both were tasty, however, the texture of the karaage was not what I expected. Still pretty good. For my entree, I ordered a bento with chicken katsu and four pieces of nigiri. The bento also came with a small tossed salad and one gyoza. I have to say the best part was the salad, topped with a creamy sesame-based dressing. The katsu was thin and slightly overcooked. I also had to ask for katsu sauce. The nigiri was just ok. We love Hamachi, when we seen they served Hamachi Carpaccio we had to try, unfortunately the lemon was too overpowering. My daughter ordered ramen and didn't eat 1/4 of it. Overall the food was average. The service was mediocre where we barely got checked in on and it seemed like we were bothering them when we needed anything. 10 minutes before closing a few workers came in and started tearing up some old carpet. Needless to say this caused a stir and made the place dusty and unsafe to continue eating so we packaged up our remaining food and left in a hurry.
