***Manager tried to lie to me about their competitor being bought out by Seattle Sun Tan. Dirty tricks are quite a big red flag. Tropical Tan is family-owned and has NOT been purchased by Seattle Sun. Their pricing is better as well.**** Went here because I was tired of all the BS with Seattle Sun Tan. When I walked in, I said right away, 'I'm new here.' Obviously the person at the counter doesn't think I'm telling the truth and says she has to run my name through their system, so I spell my last name slowly. It's an unusual name and I know there are no others in the area with the same name, but she then makes me spell my first name and my middle initial, plus my last name again. After this whole routine she says, 'you're not in our system.' Duh. I ask for prices and package details. And instead of answering, she starts asking me a bunch of questions about why I'm tanning, if it's for a vacation or blah blah blah. So I ask again about prices and package details. And she goes on and on about how she thinks I should only use certain level beds at certain intervals, blah blah blah. SO I ASK AGAIN FOR PRICING AND PACKAGE DETAILS. $20 'start-up' fee. And a rule about how if you want to cancel you can only do it on the 25th of each month. Then $80 per month. Or if I want to save some money and pay up front, still a $20 start up fee and $360 down right now, plus... At this point, I told her, forget it. Guess what? I hate places that try to screw you over. And all this irritating rigamarole is just a big elaborate way to screw your customers over. I also noted that they have the typical array of overpriced 'miracle tanning products' which would be undoubtedly forced upon me at each visit, same as Seattle Sun Tan. I go tanning as a treat to myself, a way to relax. Not to get pressured into buying more packages and lotions every damn time I walk in the door. And I resent being made to pay a fee if I'm not even using the service. I travel for work and don't always know if I'm going to be able to follow your idiotic rule about cancellations. I'll be driving to Bothell instead, where the Tropical Tan sells you time in a tanning bed for a reasonable fee and no idiotic BS. Seattle Sun Tan - LYING ABOUT YOUR COMPETITORS...HOW LOW CAN YOU GO?!? - Tanning Near Me - Kirkland, Washington

I used to really like this place when it was a Desert Sun, all the other locations that have switched over are basically fine but this one has an extremely loud versa spray tan machine. The sound is almost painful, and the spray is extremely weak. I tried to point out the weak spray issue once to an employee and she doubted me and denied it, stating if there wasn't any fluid the machine wouldn't spray... I actually stopped going to this location all together because of how uncomfortable the employee makes me. The 3 or 4 different times I have gone when she was working she greets me as if she is angry that a customer has come into the store. (Before I ever pointed out the weak spray thing) I wonder if she's trying to do homework or text her boyfriend instead? Her attitude is nearly hostile. She looks at you like she's annoyed and speaks in a rushed tone that makes it seem like you're really inconveniencing her by being a customer. I started to avoid the location because of how I feel when I go there. Its feels like a high school mean girl situation. Never had this experience at other locations, usually the customer service is great at the others and people are at the very least pleasant. I don't care about someone being overly nice or peppy, but don't act like its an inconvenience to do your own job. I must not be the only one who feels this way. I've been nothing but nice when I come in, tell them my name and what I want to do and I wait patiently. The last time I went was during the 30% off sale, and I tried to purchase some of the DS spray tan prep mits, she told me she couldn't discount them. (When she herself had infact done the discount the last time they had the sale.) She told me they *NEVER* do discounts on those, and I let her know they usually do and the other locations do (when you purchase more than one) . I felt almost gaslighted, not to mention her attitude is very abrasive and makes me uncomfortable. I've never had them turn down the discount at any of the other 3 locations I've gone to, and as I previously stated, she herself had discounted them the last time the 30% sale was going on. I've even contemplating asking this employee if she was okay because she seems to be extremely miserable and hate her job. It makes me feel really bad going there, so I was delighted to find there's another location in Kirkland over by Jbox on 124th with a very kind staff who has excellent customer service skills. Let me start with a caveat: I've never been tanning before in my life, and I purchased the introductory package which was $9.95 for a month of unlimited tanning, to see what it was all about. Yeah... no. Right after I bought the package and explained to the girl at the counter that I'd never tanned before, she asked me if I had eyewear. Considering that I had never been tanning, why on earth would I already have tanning eyewear? Sure, I don't need anyone to hold my hand or anything with new experiences, but I got the impression that I was just supposed to know these things. Even when I asked about what kind of eyewear I should get, I was just told of the two choices, but not their merits or their differences. Anyway, I got some goggle things and she sent me into a room with no explanation of the process. I literally had to use Google in the change room to find out what the heck tanning was about. After I came out, the upselling started. No, I literally just started doing this, and I'm not ready to drop $80 on some Kim Kardashian lotion thing. I told them I'd try it out a few times first, and that seemed to help with the upselling. I didn't get the impression they were as pushy as some other Yelpers had described. The second time I went, I discovered the first time I was there I'd used the wrong end of the tanning bed because there were buttons and whatnot down the other end of the bed. Great. Not that I had any idea because nobody had explained to me how these contraptions worked. The third time I went, I got hives all over my back where it touched the bed, and they lasted about three days. Yep. I'm sure the staff are lovely and they mean well. But the lack of explanation, interaction and the atmosphere (it's noisy and the rooms are poky) don't get me super excited about tanning. I've still got two weeks left on my package but after my experiences there I'm ready to cut my losses. read more

I am grandfathered in with the monthly package that offers the silver bed and unlimited spray tans. I do not use the service often enough but when I do I always get the question of, "do you really have tanning bed privileges'?" Yes, yes, I actually do :) The staff is always friendly and the versa is in better repair than most locations (this is a review for the Redmond location nearest Marshalls/Fred Meyer). I come here. This is my favorite location! They just replaced the bulbs in room 3 and it gets me SO DARK in 1 tan! The staff is extremely friendly, especially Anastasia and Mars. They let me know what deals are going on if I'm getting low but aren't pushy and wait until i ask for lotion recommendations, never steered me wrong! They are fantastic about times for me too since I'm fair skinned they started me low and said i should switch between the beds and I've never been so tan before. I started because of vacation but now I'm maintaining my tan through winter and they said i can put my membership on hold for summer and start it again after, they only ask that i give them 5 days notice before it takes place, so anytime in the month but just by the 25th. You'd think being half-Persian would instantly grant me a lifetime of beautiful naturally tanned skin but unfortunately the Dutch half of me got in the way of that. The girls here are friendly, and I usually don't ever have a problem getting a bed. Since they do work on commission I find that they are very eager to help you with any questions you have - one of the girls helped me pick out a lotion that didn't overwhelm my nostrils AND made my skin feel like silk. The only thing that irritates me about this place is that the employees sometimes are so understaffed that they are limited in their customer interaction (especially when signing people up for packages). From my experience, this leads to customers not being aware of all the details/bonuses that come with a monthly plan. This can cause frustration in the future. For example, no one told me when I signed up for my unlimited monthly tanning that I got 20% off any lotion. I've overheard other clients complaining about being misinformed of the cancellation policy as well. Other than that this Desert Sun has clean beds, friendly staff, and great tans. read more

The key to stopping people upselling is recognising it is part of their job and performance review, they are not the ones who created the business model, it's the company and the girls do it because they want their job. Politely tell them you are not interested in products or if you are explain what kinds and why. Upselling is for people who don't have a purpose with their money. It's okay to say no. With that being said I hand an excellent experience with a girl around 12/1p (I'll have to find my receipt). It was my first time in and I told her that I've left competitors because of how rude and entitled they acted, and how embarrassed they've made me feel for not knowing anything about tanning. Other business models they used also never made sense to me. Getting a good tan in a clean, safe place shouldn't be difficult. The girl answered all my questions honestly. She also showed me what lotions I would like (bronzer etc) and for the first time ever, I bought lotion IN STORE. Not through Amazon. Thank you for your kindness and I hope your manager see this review and recognises that even though I probably wasn't your typical customer, you still treated me with a lot of respect and that means everything to me! read more

I enjoy this place-- and I am not what one would consider the standard tanner-- I make fun of the serial fake and bakers, but this is the Northwest and the paleness of the skin at this time of the year seems less healthy than sitting under some high uv bulbs. Vitamin D defecency be damned. There is always one girl working here-- and she knows me by name and is very nice everytime I roll in. I feel like I got a good deal on the monthly package and am overall very satisfied with my expereinces here. This is the second time that this place has disappointed me and made me go out of my way for nothing. I won't be sticking around to experience a third. The first time I showed up during normal business hours in the evening to tan and the place was closed with no note anywhere as to why. No explanation. And then tonight I show up and all of the beds except for two platinum's were out of order. When I asked if I could upgrade because of the inconvenience the girl told me that I could but I would have to pay full price. Only TWO beds were functional, and both were occupied at the time. Not even a discount could be offered to your customers for your services being out of order? Give me a break. I'm done with Desert Sun. 1. Over-priced. I paid $100 for five super-high tans, went once a week until they ran out, used their lotion each time, and came out as white as before I began. Also, they charge $1 for those little eye cover thingy's. A dollar for two stickers? Really? So if I don't want to pay a dollar then it's ok with you guys if I ruin my eyes? 2. Dilapidated. For a salon that tries to be upscale, their equipment is often broken or out of order. Once I went in and waited 30 minutes for a bed. Another time I was in there was a sticker that said, "Beeper is broken, watch your time so you know when to turn over", or something to that effect. Wait, didn't I pay $20 for this tan? 3. Irritating employees. Most often they are teenage girls who don't know how to talk to customers at all. They sit and talk on the phone with their friends about whatever happened last night at the club, how drunk they were, etc. They aren't helpful either. I was inquiring about how burnt I might get from the super-high tanning bed, and was told "It only has one percent burning rays." To which I responded, "Ok, so how long should I go if I don't want to burn?" Which was met with, "Well they only have one percent burning ray." I'm sorry, I don't know what that means. Repeating it three times is not going to make me get it. They're rude too. I called and asked how many tans I had left once, and the girl acted like I had called her at her house in the middle of the night to ask for some sugar. Once when I was there waiting for a bed, one of the employees wouldn't stop complaining about how she couldn't get one customer to buy a lotion and therefore didn't make the commission. 4. Bad overall experience. The place doesn't have any mirrors or tissues in the rooms. If you're going to charge me up the yin yang for your services, you need to update your equipment/features/amenities. I will not re-sign up with this salon. The thing is, I can take a few blunders here and there. But it's clear to me the owners of this place are either out to lunch or are idiots themselves. I have yet to meet one professional employee as well as have one experience where I have left satisfied and felt like I got my money's worth. read more

The employees here are the only reason I continue to tan elsewhere. Every time I come in, hoping the person who helps me will be (at least) polite, I'm always disappointed. The most recent time I came in the sales woman told me that she had no price lists for me to look at. Bought a spray tan package and came back to use and it and they tell me they never charged my card because their system wasn't working that day (without contacting me to let me know) and that they couldn't tan me at all. 9:00 at night, ran to Come spray and they wouldn't comp me even one spray or even charge it to my account for their own mistake. I seriously cannot understand all the bad reviews on here. The ladies here are nothing short of AMAZING. For example, I feel at home here. The girls genuinely care about your day. They are NOT PUSHY with their sales, and if you opt out, they completely understand. They accept lotion back if you can't use it. I have sensitive skin, and it's hard to pick one. I like this place. It's very convenient for me. I have always had friendly service here and I hardly ever have to wait for a bed. Yes, I have had products and services suggested to me, but no one has ever been pushy. They are doing their job. Once I say no, they are very pleasant and that's the end of the sales pitch. I do think the tanning packages are kind of pricey so I have to deduct a star for that. But never had I had any "high pressure sales". For the reviewer calling the girls that work there "jack___" wow-unbelievable. That's really low, in fact the whole review screams emotional problems. I just have to start off with how awesome Alana and Chandler are. I love these girls. After sitting in traffic from Redmond to this salon they are such a breath of fresh air and always so energetic and fun. They know me by name and don't ever pressure me to make a purchase. I only mention these girls because they are who I see in the evening on the weekends but the other ladies I have come into contact are all very sweet as well. The only downside to this salon is the parking. It is in the same parking lot as Walgreens, and a couple of restaurants so it can be a pain to find a spot, especially one that doesn't put you at risk for door dings. read more

Desert Sun has proven themselves over the past week to have the *worst* customer service practices I've ever experienced. 1) When I signed a basic liability release form at the begining of my Groupon-purchased session, I was told that almost none of it applied to me because I was a Groupon customer. *As I tried to read the fine-print as an informed customer, the sales person interrupted and distracted me, saying that it didn't apply, so just circle this Yes and that No, and don't worry because it only applies to tanning packages.* 2) My "package" was purchased an hour and half later, and there was no mention of return/refund/exchange policies, or even a package/contract/member agreement. I assumed that this was a purchase that, like any other could be returned if I was dissatisfied with the product. 3) They oversold a package without providing any factual information about what was included or that smaller packages were available (a handwritten description is hardly official). *There are no signs, boards, handouts or anything explaining what they offer, or what their fees and policies are.* 4) When I tried to return the package the following morning at 9am open for personal reasons and dissatisfaction with the services, they claimed no refunds, even though I had my receipt and everything they had given me in hand. 5) Each time I went into the business or called them up, I was told that the manager was busy, but she had my number and would give me a call. When I finally spoke with a manager, I was promised a phone call back that evening or first thing in the morning after she spoke with the owner. That never happened. Even if the answer is no; the customer deserves a call back when promised. The Desert Sun website clearly says, "...all part of our commitment to 100% customer satisfaction." This is clearly not evident in the way my case has been handled between the lack of information about their polices, what packages they offer, and how poorly my complaint has been handled. On top of that, even though I've been very kind up to this point with them, I've received dirty looks and negative tones of voice every time I've come in since this started. A salon should provide a relaxing experience, and this certainly has not been. read more

Needed a package for a vacation to Mexico I was taking in April. I specifically told them I did not want a monthly membership as I did not want money auto drawn from my account. I just discovered Sept 1, that they had been taking money out every month since April, which was the last time I tanned. Called the location, the girl was helpful and directed me to customer service right away. The customer service rep said it was their policy to never refund money onto debit cards (original payment). She said I signed the monthly membership document, therefore she could not refund me. If you guys have tanned here, you know about their e-sign digital pad, where no documents are in front of you. I have had nothing but an excellent experience at this salon. The rooms are always clean, the front desk people are polite and quick to get me into a room. I have a great tan after only a couple of visits. I read a lot of bad reviews and I honestly don't get it. Tanning lotion is important to get good color and not burn. I'll just start by saying that if there were another tanning salon near me, I wouldn't go to this Desert Sun location, which I have been tanning at for about 6 years. The customer service is lacking, and with each visit, I'm pressured to buy something, even if I already have more tans on my account than I could possibly use. Upside: beds and salon is always clean. Downside: the mystic tan machine broke on me twice, spraying from just my knees down. Both times, it was right before an important event, and both times, it was handled poorly when I asked for a credit back to my account. They have a new mystic now, but at the prices they charge, it should have been replaced a few years back. I'll keep going just because it's close, but will keep my fingers crossed that a new tanning salon or owner for this one will be coming soon! read more

Agree with most posts below. The staff is friendly (most of them),. It's easy to find parking and you can tan quickly. Very convenient overall, and they offer free water bottles. What turns me off about this place is the fact that every time I go in there, I feel like I have to pull my lotion and eyewear out of my purse so that I don't get hassled non-stop to buy more of their products or services. I've already bought a year long package- one in which I use probably twice a month at most (overall). I already bought $80 dollar lotion and eye wear.... and now I'm being sold some special towel that will cover my face because the regular towel doesn't block all UV rays?? I can't hate on the girls working there if they are truly pushed to make commissioned sales, because they are so in your face and consistent about it that they are really doing all in their power to sell. It's annoying to have to say "No, thanks" at least 4 times before tanning. I just want to take my "no-make-up-faced self in, quickly get into a bed, lather myself up and leave quickly. I don't need to be told I need wrinkle protection or enhanced colors. It really is getting out of hand and I have had other friends refuse to go to desert sun just for these reasons. There is a blonde gal that works there that has always been incredibly sweet to me, remember my name, etc. No one else knows me, and ALL of them try to sell me. Worst customer service! The girls are so ridiculously immature and rude. And if you think going to management is going to help, think again. I went straight to Alana or whatever, about my concerns. I wasn't getting the results I wanted. I told her the name of one of the girls, Chanler, who has checked me in multiple times. Turns out the girls kept giving me lower levels then what I asked for. Once I addressed it to her, she was treating me with no respect. No response was given, she just stared at me then said I could go to room 12. I've never ever ever ever yelped any store and yes I've had plenty of unpleasant customer service reps. But nothing like this. I hope higher management takes initiative to fix these girls attitude. Not okay. Hope no one else experiences this kind of treatment, especially while paying $50/mo for a membership, I expect to be treated with respect and to be heard when there is an issue. Times have changed with tanning. I used to pay for like 5 or 10 punch style and now it's a membership. I am not a fan of this style of paying but that is the trend in tanning so I don't blame this location. Its a large company so I like that each location is very much the same. I went to this location to accompany my friend while she got a spray tan. The girl at the front desk told me that they were having a special for $35 and a free spray tan, and that I should get one too. I was hesitant to get one, but she told me that if I didn't like it, there was a 100% money back guarantee! I figured, "why not? What is there to lose?" (Apparently $35)... I did everything she told me to in order to ensure an even tan. However, the next day, I woke up and I looked completely streaky and orange! I basically looked like an oompa loompa zebra. I tried showering but it made it even worse and there were streaks all over my body. It looked horrible, and I had to go to a wedding looking like a complete mess. I went in one or two days later only to be told that the manager was out and she couldn't reimburse me and to come back the next day. I came in 3 days in a row and she told me the same thing. The 4th time I came in, my tan was finally faded and there was no evidence of the streaky mess. How convenient for them! I emailed the manager, politely asking for my money back and all she said was that she couldn't do that, but she could give me a free medium pressure tan. I don't want to go tanning in the beds because my family has a history of skin cancer! She then told me I still have the free spray tan that I can use... My advice to them is not to advertise that it's a "money back guarantee" because obviously they don't honor that. read more
