One-line review: Decent but was hoping for more. I brought my wife and my mother-in-law here for a special Mother's Day celebration. I was looking for something special, and this seemed like the ticket. I even got the reservation well ahead -- a good idea if you're going at a high-demand season like the week of Mother's Day. The decor inside is lovely, and the high tea is beautifully arranged. Sadly, the food was mediocre and a couple of our servers... did not deliver the kind of experience one would hope for at $45 per person. They seemed a little irritated at having to serve us. There was one server who was excellent and kind of redeemed the time. There is free parking if one is willing to hunt in the neighbourhood, but we paid the meter so that the walk to the restaurant would be very short for my mother-in-law. Today was my first visit to Secret Garden with a friend who used to frequent here as a child with her grandmother. The location she remembered is closed and soon to be replaced with another business, but Secret Garden's new location is just around the corner on 40th Ave. The space is bigger than it looks and beautifully decorated. It is bright, airy, and the tables are spaced out well. I had brought my 10 month old son in his stroller and they thoughtfully seated us in the corner (I gave advanced notice in my online reservation). The food was delicious and generous, two of each savory piece on beautiful tiered dishes. The tea is unlimited and you can try as many as you'd like! This was perhaps one the original tea rooms and still apparently has quite a following. Mid day workday whence we patroned was decently packed with British expats, and loyal colony subjectlings. Stuffy British accented parlance can be loudly heard without any effort. Never have I been to a tea room or aspired to due to the opposite reasons why loyal colonial subjects patronize the place. This time was out of curiosity and other's invite. So have nothing in particular as a reference point. Set menu of infinite teas. A few were decent. Then you have a "tower" of tiny bites. Seems they were mindlessly made by minions at a much earlier date and time. Everything tasted slightly on the stale side of things. For a packed lunch room, there were only a few servers, making it exceptionally challenging to order items. Overall, for the pretty penny you are paying for this visit to antiquity, you certainly won't feel like you are being treated like lords or ladies. It is no secret that I love high tea! I came to the Secret Garden for the first time 12 years ago. It has since moved locations into a much roomier and bright setting. We came today and were given a quiet corner table and were able to fully enjoy our two hour window for high tea. I love that the tea is bottomless and that you are able to sample different flavors. The Secret Garden Earl Grey was delightful with hints of vanilla and caramel. My mom and daughter shared the regular high tea service and I enjoyed the vegan version. The sandwiches were delicious - my favorite being a toss up between the BBQ tofu and the Mushroom BLT. I loved the coconut scone with the whipped coconut cream and jam. I love sipping on tea and eating mini sweet and savoury things. I can do it for hours without any regret for the time I've spent or how much I have eaten. Feels quite posh, if I may say so... The cups with their matching saucers and the surroundings are equally as important to the 'event' as the tea and the food. The ambience is a bit noisy like many reviews say, however I didn't mind it because it didn't feel like people would listen in on your conversation/ we didn't feel the need to whisper and feel self conscious about being loud or anything. Came here for a little Wednesday high tea and it was adorable! We paid about $126 for 2 people and left stuffed with half of our food for to-go! We got 4 of everything for the savouries and everything was super filling. Our food was a bit cold which made the pastries a bit stale and dry. BUT - we did bring the food that we couldn't finish back home and when we heated it up it tasted wayyy better! The scones were nice and light where the tarts where warm and buttery. For a place serving high tea experience, this was a strange one. First and foremost, the high tea time offered was at 2 pm which is early for high tea time. Even if you had lunch at noon, this is way too early for high tea. As you walk in, it seems like you are walking into someone's living room that's crammed with mismatched tables. I already felt like a bull in the China shop because they were so close together. The paint, the decor, and the cutlery all make you feel like you are back in the 50s. The cups/plates are mismatched which would have added to the charm if they weren't faded and just looked old. The tea is offered in pots that are covered with a tea cozy which were very charming. They serve it with milk and sugar based on your preference but one of the pots we got was barely lukewarm. The servers were happy to add hot water but, the place was so full and the servers were so few that it took a really long time to get their attention. The servers were fantastic just very busy The food part of it comes in a three tier tower which can be shared by two people. They offer vegetarian and vegan options as well which we did not try. The food is more than enough for two people to share in which case they are more than happy to provide you with to-go boxes. However, though the desserts were good, the sandwiches were sloppily made and some of them were soggy. The scones were the biggest disappointment; you can get better ones at whole foods. I do not believe it was worth the $50 per person. We were visiting Vancouver from the states and sought out a nice tea place. Secret Garden Tea was recommended and the reviews were "ok". Food was good. Not fabulous, but tasty. The biggest problem was our server could not crack a smile was not attentive and was not helpful at all. It also took forever to get our food and then when we did get it, she brought one of the items that was wrong, and it took another 20 minutes to get the corrected item. I would not consider this an afternoon tea location, rather disappointing. For a girls afternoon out, my friend and I decided to catch up over high tea. We heard Secret Garden moved so decided to check out the new location. I called the day of to make reservations and they had availability still (they have 12, 2:15, 4:30 tea time slots). Service on the phone was professional and friendly - asked if we were allergic to anything or any special diet restrictions (e.g. gluten-free, etc) so they could leave a note for the server. When we got there, there was only 1 high tea selection for $32. We noticed other tables looked like they had other food though. The waitress asked us what tea we wanted and if we had any allergies, then left with our menus; we never actually said we wanted that high tea selection. I guess we should've asked if there were any other options before she left, but we just let it go. The food came and unfortunately, I've had better for less. It wasn't memorable and the savory asparagus in croissant sandwiches that sound great on paper came out very bland, as were the egg pinwheels. The scone, also bland and the jam and cream that normally helps me enjoy my scones more did nothing for me here. Dessert, normally my favorite part of any meal was not bland but instead waaayyy too sweet for me - and I normally love food on the sweet side. None of the selection made me want to go back. NOT GLUTEN FREE: As a Christmas present, my son made us (he & I) a reservation for the Gluten Free Winter Magic High Tea for December 30th. We both have Celiac Disease and eat out extremely rarely, so I was looking forward to it SO much. He took time off work, and I drove from Coquitlam. I was so excited for this experience! When I arrived I asked the server to please remind the kitchen to be careful when plating our gluten free treats, to avoid cross-contamination. She was very polite, but a little unsure about the kitchen's practices and said she'd check with her manager to make sure everything would be okay. Unfortunately she came back and told us the manager said everything would definitely be cross-contaminated because in their very small kitchen they prepare the gluten-containing foods and "gluten-free" foods at the same time, on all the same surfaces, in the same cookware & pans, with the same utensils. This was disappointing and really alarming because the menu clearly advertises "Gluten Free Winter Magic High Tea" with no disclaimer or any indication that all the supposed 'gluten-free' foods are in fact NOT gluten free since they are definitely heavily contaminated with gluten. If I hadn't spoken with the server (that is: if I'd trusted the website), both of us would have become very sick. The server was very apologetic, and I felt awful that she was put in a situation that seemed quite uncomfortable for her. The manager should have come to our table and handled this herself, but she did not. I asked the server if we could at least be compensated with a pot of tea. She again went to check with the manager, who STILL didn't come out, but at least did 'okay' complimentary tea for us. The place is a lovely spot, nicely decorated, bright & airy, with beautiful looking goodies served on lovely tiered plates. The Butter Tart and Vanilla Almond tea we had were both delicious. Our server was a nice young lady willing to do her best to accommodate us, and two other servers came by to top up our teapots with hot water, so I will say the wait staff and tea are great (I did tip our server). BUT: it's just crazy that the manager couldn't spare a moment for us to deal with this situation which NEVER should have happened; the website falsely - and dangerously - advertises "gluten free" but takes ZERO measures to ensure the safety of those foods and for that reason I advise avoiding this spot on principle, if not for one's actual health & safety. Savories: Cauliflower Veloute Soup Secret Garden Egg Pinwheels Petit Beef Wellington Roasted Turkey and Christmas Cranberry Chutney on Housemade Challah Buns Sweets: Cranberry Scone with Raspberry Jam and Devonshire Cream Red Velvet Cookie with white Chocolate Frosting Tangy Mini Lemon Tart Decadent Chocolate Cranberry Cake Persimmon and Gingerbread Brioche Pudding They have a pretty good selection of teas to choose from and your teapot is kept warm with the tea cozies. This is one of those rare places where both the savoury and sweet items were delicious. I had the August & September High Tea Menu with the Avalon blend tea. It is $35 per person, which I find extremely reasonable for the quality of food, beautiful venue, and welcoming service. Favourites: 1. Harvest Pea and Beurre Blanc Shrimp Salad on Mini Croissant The croissant was flaky and crispy on the outside, which contrasted extremely well with the soft and fresh shrimp salad. 2. Tea Cake Slices I expected the tea cakes to be dense and dry but these were perfectly sweetened and moist. 3.Decadent Milk Chocolate Cheesecake Who doesn't like chocolate? Enough said. This is definitely the first place that comes to mind for hightea. The Secret Garden has been in the Kerrisdale neighborhood for quite some time and it was so nice to visit the relocated shop! The food and staff were guest as good and friendly. Every few months their hightea menu changes with some new items. With my recent visit they had the shrimp salad croissant which is definitely a new favorite of mine! Their scones is always a hit too! Their tea menu have changed a bit since i last visited and now offers iced tea. The iced tea is quite refreshing and is great for the hot summer weather. They are refillable as well! Came today to celebrate my beautiful friend's daughter! It was a lovely place to host a bridal shower! We had the whole front side room to ourselves. We were all sat at smaller tables and shared in high tea at our tables! They did allow for decorations and for us to play some group bridal shower games! For being in a formal tea room it still allowed for intimacy and mingling amongst the guests! The high tea was lovely...there were some savoury sandwich bites with great attention to detail. I have to say I am disappointed after visiting last weekend. I came with my mom who was visiting from out of town. We both love high tea and I had checked out the options nearby and made a reservation here. When we walked in it was an instantly stressful experience. The place was very crowded and incredibly loud. There was a large inflow of people arriving for the 2pm reservation and not a lot of organization or staff direction so everyone had gathered in the entry in a large crowd. As we were led to our table, everything was crammed closely together and I felt like "a bull in a China shop" as the other recent reviewer put it. When we had sat at our table we found the noise and chaos to be pretty unbearable. None of the guests were being particularly loud or unruly, but the sheer amount of people crammed inside and the close proximity of the tables resulted in a constant din that grated on our nerves. My mom and I were seated at a small 2-person table and I'm not exaggerating when I say we had to shout to hear each other speak. Unfortunately while sitting and waiting for our server we realized that this was going to be a very unpleasant experience and we would rather not be here. We told our server that we would be going and apologized for our change of plans, and ended up leaving without having tea. We did buy a couple pastries to go at the front and they were good. I may be a little more sensitive to noise and chaos than the average person but I don't think I was being unreasonable here. I have never left a restaurant because of the noise before this, and my mom felt the same way. It's a bummer because we were really looking forward to this. I understand that restaurants need to make up for lost business but there were simply too many customers packed in for anyone to enjoy the experience. read more

High Tea!!! With all the fixins and done properly in the old world style you just can't find anywhere else is exactly how it should be done, and the Secret Tea Garden does it perfectly! As a visitor to Vancouver I always like to look for out of the way places. The Secret Tea Garden was recommended by local friends and it is now in a new location that they say has better parking, is off the main street, and looks brand new on the inside and out. The store has all kinds of teas from bags to loose-leaf to various other things... and my favorite, decaffeinated tea -- have as much as you want, then still be able to sleep! Beyond the teas are various kitchen "accessories" or as I like to call them "Future Christmas Gifts". Prices are extremely reasonable, and the staff is only too helpful to explain what they have in stock and the different flavors and types of teas as well as the Christmas Gifts. If you're not into High Tea, their sandwiches are BRIMMING with FRESH vegetables and healthy ingredients on a wide variety of bread selections. As a visitor I did not get to sample more than one of these... but the flavor was explosive (in the great way when your mouth is brimming with life) and I'll come back for more. Our server was knowledgeable and talkative (again in a good way). The food order was accurate and we were appreciative she took the time to help us understand what was in front of us. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming and even the wall colors are thoughtfully adorning what feels like home. If they added a Japanese zen garden (but where?)
