Had such a high expectations for their afternoon tea but came out feeling just ok. The cafe's decor is modern and not traditional or "shabby chic" English style. I'm fine with this decor but for other seeking traditional this may not be your cup of tea. We had a nice selection of savouries and sweets. However, I would have preferred more savouries. I was disappointed in that my friend noted my allergies and they had a week to "make adjustments" but they didn't. They just removed the jam I was allergic to. Other places would have provided a substitute and it was so simple. Unfortunately, Holt's Cafe didn't and this affected my tea experience. How can you have a scone without jam? Service was good and a good small tea selection. We got a Jo Malone gift with our tea but the sample size didn't impress me. I was expecting more for $65 per person. Took refuge at the cafe as the shopping this weekend was just crazy. It's been years I've been back at the cafe. Great service! Thank you Crissy! Potato Fries- thin cut and very well done. Yam Fries- highlight! must order, caramelise to perfection Ice coffee; Friend had this and said it was great. Espresso Martini- Tasted ok, half the glass was foam so it was half a drink. The misses: Brewed coffee, tepid temperature, weak and tons of grounds that I couldn't finish. Didn't want to order coffee with tons of milk, and assumed the Americano would be weak. Brew is a no go. Oysters; We had about 20, and half of the oysters had so much shell, lost of brine and just thin/skinny. Not worth it, considering it's oyster season atm. The bottle are cute with the sauces however I only use lemon, and I prefer fresh lemons. Had dinner post snack, so wasn't able to order the salads and sandwiches. I actually quite enjoyed myself at this quaint little cafe with excellent service and friendly waitstaff. They accommodated me for an afternoon tea as a walk in because it was my birthday even though it needs to be booked ahead. The eats were good and of course aesthetically pleasing. Mother's Day Brunch at Holts Cafe. This was a Guelian honey themed afternoon tea and came with a little themed gift in a small cloth bag. The Sweets. All very one note, which was sugar/honey. The complementary flavors as described by the menu were perhaps too subtle. Scones. Blueberry scones were quite delicious, but came toasted and cut in half when they arrived. No big deal but should normally be left to the customer if they would like their scones cut in half across the top like a semi circle. Never seen scones presented that was before but like I said, no biggie. Savories. These were the best part of the afternoon tea set. Again, some of the complimentary flavors were a little too subtle and each piece was somewhat one note, but generally pretty decent. Teas. The selection and quality is reasonably decent. No complaints here. Service. Service was really attentive at first, but understandably, became decreasingly attentive as more customers arrived. Ambiance. Was a pleasant dining area, that was comfortable and well lit. A couple of things did spoilt the experience... When eating an afternoon tea, it's quite jarring when a steam hot plate of Parmesan truffle fries appear on the table next to you. The aroma of the cheese was extremely strong and somewhat masked the fragrance of our afternoon tea bites. You can't control what the next table orders but this did take the shine off a little bit. What took the shine off a lot was the state of the washroom. The toilet seat was extremely filthy. The washroom smelled of urine and there were no hand dryers or towels to dry your hands. We had to use toilet paper to dry our hands which isn't what you'd expect in a higher end restaurant. I hope this was an oversight due to a busy Mother's Day brunch service and normal. Would I return? This was not my first time here, and probably not my last, but I'm in no rush to go back. read more

I come here every month for lunch and the staff are very friendly. The restaurant has a comfortable area with sofas and a formal area with tables and chairs. Sometimes it gets crowded during events and only the counter is available, but it's a nice place with a great atmosphere. This time I had Winter Quinoa Salad and Korean Braised Short Rib. I really liked Winter quinoa salad. I didn't add any protein but a big size and taste so good. Highly recommend it. Korean B short rib was a very pretty look but meat was a bit salty. We came here for lunch on a Monday. They get pretty busy during lunch so make sure you make a reservations ahead of time to ensure you get a spot. Our server was super friendly and organized. He was attentive and made sure everything was always full. I had the Saigon steak salad and the fried chicken sandwich and switched the fries to truffle fries (for extra 2$ charge). The Saigon steak salad was really we seasoned. Very good balance of sweet, sour and savoury. Lots of veggies and the steak was tender but the vermicelli was too hard for me. I wish it had been cooked a bit longer so it wasn't so hard. The fried chicken sandwich was nice and hearty. The fried chicken was crispy but the bun didn't go well with it. It couldn't hold the crispy chicken. If you like truffles, switch the fries to truffle fries. They are crispy and have just enough truffle flavour. We were also celebrating a birthday. They had the option of $12 birthday dessert platter and we got that. It comes with a candle and was very cute. Overall I would come back to try other items on their menu. read more

Such a lovely spot! We came in for high tea, but apparently there was some confusion as to whether we booked the right reservation online (holiday tea vs regular tea vs regular reservation). They were super accommodating and tried to make it right! The high tea was just what you want and everyone was impressed with the service and content with the food/drinks. Having a clearer reservation booking system and a room that's less echoey and loud would make this a five star experience. Will definitely be back! read more

I decided to try afternoon tea here after seeing some great photos of it and booked for three of us to go. Unfortunately one of us got sick and couldn't make it so just two of us were able to make it. After sitting down the waiter says because it's afternoon tea we were in the hook for the third person anyways. Even after I said it was last minute due to illness he still said it didn't matter. So beware! No cancellations allowed! What happens if I didn't show up at all??? Hmmm. The tea selection is enough, not extensive provided by a company named Sloane. Choice of Black, white, green or Roobois teas. Savoury selections were good, I especially enjoyed the truffle arancini. Baked goods were also as good as they looked. I found the portions to be quite small and there could have been more savoury selections or just more overall especially for $65 per person. Service was ok as he was the only server so it was hard getting his attention to refill our hot water. Overall it was ok and again I think the ratio of savoury to sweet could have been better with more savoury and larger portions would have been nice. The Georgio Armani gift bag of a teeny lipstick and cream sample was a nice touch. If you're looking for high tea, there are other places that do it really well. Their other menu items looked really good with normal portions which I'd recommend! Good place to stop for lunch if you're already there in a shopping spree. read more

Compared to other high tea/ afternoon tea places Holt Cafe is definitely bit more expensive, but their location, decor, and luxury food menu items I feel make up for the extra added costs. read more

Gong hei fat choi! This review is e for the Lunar New Year themed afternoon tea special menu which ran from end of Jan to beginning of Feb. I found out about it from a friend (honestly I'm surprised it wasn't really well advertised given their clientele and the themed concept). It was offered with 24-hour reservation only between 2-4pm and we ended up coming on a Thursday afternoon to give it a try. I really appreciated the themed items, and everything was so unique! The scones were red velvet, served with a creamed cheese and berry preserves. My favourite were definitelysavoury items, very dim sum-esque especially the mushroom and black truffle spring rolls and the cucumber and Asian pear pinwheel (their version of the traditional cucumber sandwiches for this afternoon tea set!) I love love love the sweets - especially the black sesame cupcakes with matcha butter cream with a generous sprinkling of gold flakes on top, and the delicate strawberry pavlova! Most of the items were red in colour, and I must applaud them for putting so much thought into the theme and menu. At $55 per person I thought it was a great price point, and the highlight was the oolong crème tea which had a creamy texture to it without any dairy additives. I really wish they would offer these items in their full menu as well, a lot of these I would definitely order on their own if they were available separately and in full sizes, would probably eat about a dozen of the mushroom spring rolls tbh!!! They also gave us treats take home - a berry rice crispies type of treats and house-made koi shaped maltose hard candies. I look forward to coming back here again to try their regular menu at some point. Grey n white interiors give it a very calm and soothing look. Maybe not a typical cafe look but the food and comfort is cafe equivalent. Satin valvet Soft couches with cusions, low tables and rugged floors makes you feel like seated in a comfortable living area. Food menu is pretty simple but have everything needed from a vegan burger to salmon and chicken sandwich, pizza , salad and soups. Coffee and lattes are available too. Very disappointed that their afternoon tea is not the same presentation as earlier pictures featured on reviews here. The food is different and the tier holder is nothing special and quite upsetting they don't let you know beforehand. Given they're high end Holt Renfrew restaurant, and for the price they charge, it's not worth it at all. Initial service was by table host and first server very poor. They indicate on their website you have to reserve for afternoon tea, which we did. When re arrived the host took our names but didn't bother reading any reservation details. The first server also gave us a regular menu even when we repeatedly told them we were here for afternoon tea. Our subsequent assigned waitress made up for it though, she was much nicer and more attentive. Despite making a reservation, they still said the afternoon tea will take 40 minutes. Which is ridiculous, why make us make a reservation then? The food that we got was also subpar. The duck smelled spoiled, which we did not eat. The scones were also stone cold. It's not worth the price they charge. Regardless will never return to this place for afternoon tea. read more

We came here for brunch yesterday and it's pretty empty. Beautiful restaurant with plenty of seating. Food was average. They went a little overboard with my hollandaise sauce. The croque madame wasn't very good. This dish was warm and it wasn't authentic. Fries were not crispy. My favourite dish was the cauliflowers (that's about it). It's a nice place if you're tired of shopping and want somewhere to relax. But if you're picky like me, don't expect to be wow by the food. read more

I've only been here twice, the first time to try out their steak tartar that got savaged in the Globe and Mail (it was perfectly fine, not the best, but certainly not the worst). I don't shop at Holts' but I thought I would pop in for a quick light lunch, and had a very nice French Onion Soup. A beautiful high tea spot tucked away in Holts Renfrew Vancouver. The afternoon hightea has a really fun selection of savoury open sandwiches ranging from steak tartare, avocado toast, crab and shrimp. And that pear compote for the scones is nom! The service was very friendly and the server checked on us and refilled our tea frequently. Bonus: they are currently having a Jo Malone collaboration with their afternoon tea that comes with a mini Jo Malone cream and perfume - was a really nice treat along with tea and goodies! Good location for lunch if your shopping. It's very out of the way, I had a difficult time trying to find it. The menu is a bit smaller that I would have liked. It was cold out and I was really craving soup, but they didn't have any. And I was a bit to hungry to try and find another place to go. The restaurant itself is very nice and there is a great bar area as well. My server was very friendly and attentive. I arrived close to the end of their lunch/brunch service but I didn't feel rushed. I was able to rest my feet and arms from shopping and carrying way to many bags, it was very relaxing. My food was very good. I just had a classic breakfast, as I was looking for something comforting, but not filling- it hit the spot. All in all if I were looking for lunch in this area again I would probably search out somewhere else, but it was definitely worth going to at least once. read more

tried their afternoon tea that just launched yesterday with my besties. service was great as they were attentive to our needs and requests. came by a couple times to ask us about the food and to add hot water to our tea. seems like not a lot of people know abt the afternoon tea cuz it wasn't as busy as we thought it'd be. for the avid tea goers, please note that the food doesn't come in a tier. they serve them on a plate - 2 plates in total. one savoury and one for sweets. there was a decent selection of teas and there's a cute little tea timer on the table. i have to say that the tea does get watered down quite fast since they only add hot water. i found the savoury plate better than the sweet. there were 2 sandwiches that were on this bread that was too salty for my liking. the sweets were...sweet. many were bland and didn't have any other flavour than sweetness. i did like the lavender cream for the scone though. when we paid, i had to ask for the jo malone gift (that clearly was the highlight lol). overall, a decent experience. read more

The table also comes with a mini low folding "chair" for your purse, now that's attention to detail! I came here specifically for the afternoon team featuring a collaboration with Jo Malone. I'm addition to our meal, I received a little goodie bag with a sample of the Wood Sage & Sea Salt Cologne and English Pear & Freesia Body Crème. Which felt like such an extra treat. For $35 the tea set was an excellent value. On the savoury side, the sandwiches were scrumptious. The two stand out stars were the crab and smoked salmon sandwiches. On the sweeter side, the madeleines were chewy and fresh and the macarons were well made. I was a tad disappointed with the lemon scones, they weren't buttery and rich like the famous scones at Fairmont, but a lighter and dryer pastry. I was also hoping for a sweeter addition, maybe something chocolatey, to tie up the set. Overall, I had an enjoyable experience. Colette is a gorgeous café tucked away inside Holt Renfrew. Emphasis on tucked away and low-key difficult to find (or maybe that's just me). We had the Traditional Afternoon Tea for $35 each, and I ordered the tropical green tea to pair with mine. We received a complimentary gift from Jo Malone gift, which included a sample of their Wood Sage Sea Salt cologne. We ate: · Traditional Afternoon Tea, which included: ‣ Savory platter: Steak tartare toast, crab and tuna salad toast, avocado toast, smoked salmon crepe, chicken salad mini sandwich ‣ Sweet platter: Madelaines, lemony scone with raspberry jam, Chantilly cream & pear compote, creamsicle macaron, lemon blueberry tarts · Fruit tartelette From the savoury platter, my favorite was the avocado toast (which really should have been called tomato toast instead). The rest of the platter could have used more seasoning. Unfortunately, one of our chicken salad mini sandwiches had a bone mixed in, which our server was extremely apologetic about. The manager ended up bringing us a complimentary tartelette and personally ensured we had a good experience. The handled the situation extremely professionally, and I was quite impressed with the service. Most of the sweet platter items were standouts. The madelaines were light, the macaron had the perfect moist texture, and the lemon blueberry tarts were absolutely delicious. My only gripe was the scones, which seemed to be quite eggy and had an odd bouncy consistency rather than light and flaky. Lastly, the fruit tartelette was interesting but not to my liking. The creme seemed to have Christmas spices incorporated in (which I'm not a big fan of), and I would have preferred the crust to be flaky rather than moistly chewy. Came here for a business lunch. Food was prompt, but average and generally a bit disappointing. The portions (at least what I was served) were apologetically small. My dining companion and I both ordered the sablefish and it looked like we were only having appetizers. Sablefish is my standard go-to order at restaurants, and this was less than half the size of a typical serving. When asked if we cared for dessert, I actually considered having an appetizer instead! However, as the situation dictated, we did order dessert and both desserts (the lemon and the dark chocolate) were unfortunately, presented in the form of layered bars. Underwhelming. Have been to this place several times, I like they use fresh plant or flowers on tables. The beef tartare was just perfect. Perfect amount and perfect seasoning. Everything on that plate was harmonic and balance. We really like they used gaufrettes instead of toast of bread. The scallops were fine too. However, the black kale salad was so so so sour... the vinegar taste burnt my throat twice so I had to gave it up in the end. Tried to ask for more apple, hoping the sweetness would combat the sour but it worked little. Generally good experience, their service was as professional as uaual :) read more

The high tea was $35 and came with 5 savouries, 3 sweets and a scone. The scone was lemon flavored and came with cream, jam and a marmalade. I enjoyed the selection of savouries which included a smoked salmon sandwich, and steak tartare, crab, and veggies on toast. My favourite was the crab and steak tartare as it was full of flavour and went well with the toasted bread. The sweets were simple: macaron, tart, and madelaines. Food served in 10 minutes, drink was good but little bit on the bitter side, maybe she forgot the brown sugar? Attentative waitress, on point, polite ! Only thing I was annoyed with, was the table beside us, raising their voices when conversing and picking their teeth with toothpicks in public. I found it so annoying, so we quickly ate and left, sorry Mainlanders just don't have etiquette.
