Very sick small shop full of some nice expensive denim. But hey, if you got the $ and youre into denim... youre in the right place. Bought a pair of Iron Hearts from them in 2010, Had them for 2 years now and the patch started tearing off. I guess its a common problem because it happened to my friend too. So we all went there to drop off our jeans to have it repaired. Two jeans with crotch blow out and mine with the patch needing to be sewed back on. Left it there for a week and got a call saying it was done. I was too lazy to pick it up so they offered to shipped it to me in San Jose for $10 which was perfect. Save me time and gas money. Got my jeans the next day along with my friends too. Very friendly and helpful. just start saving up. I find it hard going back to Levis and any other jeans after my Iron Hearts.... beware! read more

I have a feeling that some of the people who reviewed Self Edge don't know anything about denim, and they don't know why it's priced as such, etc. In all honesty Self Edge is by far the best store for jeans anywhere in San Francisco (or the bay area, for that matter) Self Edge carries all of the good japanese denim brands that you can't find anywhere else--Samurai, Skull, The Flat Head, Iron Heart (and more) I got a pair of Skulls there and the stitching start to come off after a month or so--Kiya (the owner) is fixing it for me for free, and they even offered to replace my jeans. Of course I don't want to replace them...I've only been wearing them about a month! All of the people who work at Self Edge are NOT pretentious as all, and they are very willing to help. Sup Kiya, and sufuers alike. I think (some) people are hating on SE for no reason at all. The denim is expensive - but you get what you pay for. You don't like their attitudes? Give them a chance. They're all fabulous people who know the model numbers of the brand, the fit, the cut, what size you should get... basically everything. Where else are you going to get this kind of expertise? Sears? I think not. They even carry women's clothing! It's unbelievably difficult to find a high-end denim store that caters to women. This place is the shit. If you are looking for the absolute best pairs of jeans on the market then you have to stop by Self Edge. The staff are so well informed and can really hep pick out several pairs that are going to be right for your shape. I also ride motorcycles, so I like to get a really thick, quality denim, in case I need them to hold up against asphalt... I have to say I was very impressed with their selection. I LOVE me some quality denim. This is why I went for a visit soon after the opening of Self Edge. Unfortunately, this turned out to be a disappointment, primarily because: -- They have jeans made for only three sizes. 26-29. Luckily, I'm a 27.... you think that'd be a good thing, but then they were like 8 inches too long. I mean, I'm a 5'4 Asian chick and I'm accustomed to my pants being too long. But normally, stores accommodate me when I buy premium denim with complimentary hemming. This place doesn't have that service. Minus one. -- Jeans were between $280-350 and the selection was just not that commensurate with that price level. I think there were maybe three brands of jeans. I would pay that much if the jeans fit well and looked amazingly good, but instead they made my butt look flat and my legs look stumpy. I'd rather pay around $200 for a nice pair of flattering Diesels. Self Edge does have cute hoodies and shirts upstairs, but those are overly priced too. 24SF has graphic tees just as cute for half the price... I will say that the dude working there was pretty sweet and helpful... but found it weird that the changing room is basically comprised of a curtain right next to the employee's desk surrounded by mirrors that perfectly reveal the person changing in the employee's immediate proximity. _______________________ note: the owner emailed me to inform me that there are actually eight ladies' sizes and eight brands of jeans. i stand corrected. my girlfriend who wears size 30 couldn't find any jeans to fit her that day, but maybe it was just happenstance. read more

Turns out that they shipped to us for free, saving us another trip into the City, and we received on Thursday! Such quick service - I should thank them and as well as FedEx, I suppose! I've been to this little shop twice and both of my experiences have been pleasant. The staff members are well-informed on their products and won't hesitate to answer any questions you may have. The first time I was here, I had a pair of my jeans hemmed. I'm always anxious when bringing my jeans in to a tailor since I never know how they'll be returned. Surprisingly, when I came to pick the jeans up, they were perfect. My second time here, I was planning on picking up a pair of jeans. The staff was very helpful and recommended a few pairs to me. Oh how I love thy premium denim. I cannot live without them anymore. Rock Republics and True Religions can kiss my arse because they got nothing on me. ;) Everyone must own at least one pair of premium japanese denim and they should definitely get it from Self Edge because they have the best selection and great people working there. They are even the sole distributors for Nudies' Slim Kim line for ladies! I came back here several a times before actually buying my first pair of premium denim. I finally gained up the courage and bought a pair of Sling&Stones and Slim Kim Nudies! And let me tell you, I have not regret it one bit. They are the best denim I've ever worn and I can never go back to the regular denim days. The boyfriend also owns a pair of Sugar Canes and Dry Bones, which he loves too! This isn't a clothing store so much as a way of life. If you're into the clothing made available at SelfEdge then it's safe to say that you're the type of person who takes pride in well-made garments. For the same price that you would pay for your trendy, made-in-italy jeans you can instead purchase a pair of raw denim that will contour and fade based on your body type. I find that this makes buying and wearing these jeans an intimate endeavor. I won't really go into detail about the clothing offered at the store as it can all be seen on their website (and with great detail) I will say that the staff at SelfEdge are amazing and are always going above and beyond to satisfy their customers. Whether that entails answering a million sizing questions or just to the general basics of raw denim SE is there to make sure you have no unanswered questions. Additionally, I have shopped with them both online and in person and have enjoyed both equally. Online they were quick to respond to my questions and in person they were quick to offer suggestions as to what jeans would suit my needs best. Wonderful staff, beautiful store and great clothing. For the last 10 years, I've been buying Seven for all Mankind, Joe's, Paige and Citizens of Humanity. After about a year of these types of jeans, I buy another because they rip too easily, stretch out too much, or I grow to hate the unchanging fade on them. I like the idea of raw denim jeans fading over time and conforming to fit your body. The lifespan of raw denim also makes the excessive price tag worth it. I bought a cheap pair of raw denim (Cheap Monkey) and they never stretched. I still fight to get into them. I finally decided to just bite the bullet and pay for a nice pair of raw denim jeans. I went into Self Edge because my boyfriend is pretty loyal to them and I trust his style. I didn't do any denim research beforehand and Geno was very helpful in helping me pick a pair that works for my body. He pulled various styles for me and walked me through the difference between each one, giving his own input on what he thought worked best for me. I didn't feel rushed or pressured to make a decision and ended up buying a pair of 3sixteen for $240. They also tailor the length for free and it only took 4 days. Now, I am not rich, and i am aware that 100, 200, 300, 400 isnt alot of money to spend in such a "luxury" store, but i believe that i was a POTENTIAL BUYER. I came in, knowing what to buy already. Imperial black shearers, or skulls. i just needed to try them on....... ALL THE SALES IGNORED ME, NO SERVICE whatsoever. at one point, the other brown hair female sales rep, looked at me, and gave the PALM FACE to us. WHAT THE HECK? bullshit service. HORRIBLE. do not go there, if you must, just go there and try on the jeans, then order online from another store. they are so messed up. i would never go back even if they gave me a really good discount. also, beware, its located in one of the most ghetto part of SF ever. read more

I took the plunge into the world of selvage denim.... now I don't think I'm ever going to be coming up for air. As someone who appreciates stealthy fashion, this place is great. The denim here doesn't separate itself through flashy or recognizable labels or pockets, but rather through construction and appreciation for the old way of manufacturing. Small batch denim allows for a truly personal pair of jeans once you've worn them through.... The thing I like most about my experience here is that the workers truly understand their audience. You're there for an obvious reason and are there to help you on your journey rather than telling you which way to go, which is often a hinderance at other high end boutiques. I bought a pair of jeans from here in late December last year. My cousin is a regular, and he educated me about what makes Self Edge and their denim so special. Ever since I got my jeans hemmed, I've worn them almost every single day for the past 5 months and have only done my first wash this past week. The jeans are the best I've ever had. One of the best investments I've made for this year and the years to come. I've come to love this pair for the same reasons so many others flock to get jeans from Self Edge: their pieces provide a long-lasting, evolving, and personal touch. After warping to my legs, my jeans fit perfectly. The fades are showing very naturally. I was fortunate enough to pick up a pair called "Caustic Wave" by 3Sixteen & Self Edge. Apparently these jeans have a very different texture than any other denim in their store; there are only 2-3 looms in Okayama, Japan that make this type of denim patterning. After a long walk through the city of SF, I finally arrived at the store i was looking for. Self Edge was one of the stores on my "must visit" list, arriving from Norway. The guy working there Saturday was so nice to me. He obviously knew alot about denim, and gave me a quick crash course, as Im no expert yet. I was looking for a new pair of denim since fashionable well cut jeans have become a staple in my wardrobe. I went to Self Edge and tried on about 10 different styles and fit of denim (jeans?!) before selecting a pair just to be sure of the cut/style I wanted. The staff was super-knowledgeable about the make, fit and wear of the denim they carry. I left with a lovely pair of Sling & Stones that I wear all the time. I don't even like my old Diesel, Seven, Citizens, Paper Cloth etc styles...you wear these jeans once and they stretch, lose their fit etc. until you wash them then they fade and look old old old. The raw denim of the Sling & Stones keeps it's shape and requires minimum maintenance - a soak when needed (staff can give you recommendations). I've been wearing these jeans straight for awhile and they still fit and look great! I even learned a bit about raw and selvedge denim. I also went back a couple of weeks later for a pair of Iron Army and A HOME RUN hoody that I love. This place Rocks! Great place to find something nice for a guy if you're shopping for someone. He was able to discuss every pair of jeans what they were made of, how many pairs were produced, what kind of dye and how much die was used in each pair. Very immpressive knowlege of his product. If you're looking for quality jeans, this is where you should be going. There's a million different brands and cuts in the world of jeans but Kiya takes the work out of it and offers only the best of the best. Most of the denim is dark-washed because denim will fade by itself so why not let it develop it's own cool fade just by wearing it? It's definitely a plus and the fit ends up being better anyway. The people there definitely know their stuff about denim and will size you up and everything. I came in looking for a pair of Nudies for my girlfriend. I bought them in the right size and they even offered to hem them for free if I needed to later. The pricing is definitely reasonable on jeans considering how much you'd have to pay if you got it sourced through a proxy from Japan or elsewhere. I initially bought a pair of Dukes from self-edge online a while back (Free shipping whaddup) after hearing about the trusty reputation of this establishment. unfortunately they did not fit as well as i hoped so i dragged my ass into SF to find this small hole-in-the-wall store. their selection is prime. i dont really know kiya, but it seems to me that he is diligent about only stocking quality products in the shop which gives you (the consumer) peace of mind. they stock quite a few quality denims that you won't find on other sites/stores like Tobi or cultizm or wherever else you turn for denim. being a small store, if you want to try on a pair of jeans, you walk into a corner covered by 2 curtains. aint no thang, it's mostly just guys shopping in there anyway. ive been to self-edge only twice and each time the customer demographic seems to be the high school skinny hipster (not sure i'm finding the right word) looking to one-up their friends by wearing raw denim that they're funding from mommy and daddy. but im extrapolating from 2 trips though...and hey, why judge? do some research on your denims before you go so you have an idea what you're looking for, or you can just ask kiya who's very knowledgeable about the cuts of the various jeans. the jeans there are expensive to very expensive, but i guess you're paying for quality. read more

I was intimidated to go to Self Edge. Reading the reviews on yelp, and hearing about it around town, I figured I wasn't denim enough or whatever. I just wanted a pair of raw denim jeans to make my own, I didn't need to make a statement to the underground denim community about my worthiness or whatever. But I went anyway, and I was pleasantly surprised. Not so stoked to show off my underwear when trying the jeans on, but it's a small price to pay. The guy behind the counter was nice and very helpful, unlike the girl at Villians who tried to tell me everything I already knew about dry denim like I was an idiot who walked in wearing no pants at all. Dude was very nice about explaining the difference between the Japanese denim and non Japanese denim and what to expect from my pair. So if you're intimidated by Self Edge, don't be. All those guys who left yelp reviews below making you feel unworthy were the same ones who ate lunch in the bathroom in high school, they're just trying to make themselves feel part of the in-crowd now. At this point I've spent a LOT of money here, now owning a pair of Strike Gold's, Imperial's, and Iron Heart's from Self Edge. Don't come unless you're a denim enthusiast willing to pay a high price for high quality. You can definitely purchase online, but buying in store is great because you'll get measured for a hemming. They'll also ship you your jeans after hemming or repairs for an extra cost, but it's worth it if you have to travel into the Mission from afar. read more

Once you try on a pair of their jeans, bite the bullet and buy them, you realize how much you have been ripped off by all of these trendy $150-200 jeans you buy at higher end boutiques and what not. Citizens for Humanity, True Religion, all of these other brands and brands in the past 2 years which are replacing these names as the "premier" denim brands are utterly pathetic in their construction, and to a good extent, their design. When you buy a belt from Self Edge, or jeans you are buying articles which will last you at least a decade or two. The prices seem high, but I've bought so many of the trendier brands, and those are built to last one or two seasons, then they fade or break, or look dated in cut and fit.. The owner of the store is so helpful in his advice on fit, care, and selection. It's worth every penny you spend to get your jeans here. So, my Dry Bones have passed their one year anniversary with my ass and so far it's been a pretty good relationship. I have to admit that I have yet to wash them, but they don't smell too much and I'm not sure I'm too compelled to do it yet. You can read all the other reviews to get an idea of all the bitchen raw Japanese denim jeans they have and how much they cost etc... And it's true, the staff know their shit pretty well, which is something nice that you usually don't get when shopping for clothing, but i guess is something you'd expect if you were buying a a bicycle, a computer or a car. They sell things for $400 that you can buy for $24.99, they better know a thing or two about it. They also give great customer service, I tried on like 20 pairs of jeans before deciding on mine. I don't know where this review is going. You know what, I harbor a secret hatred for blue jeans. There's just too many of 'em, too many people wearing them. Look at people legs next time you're out and you'll see like 90% jeans, mixed with everything from sport coats to T-shirts. But I also appreciate something that made well, made to last and just good quality. That's why i went to Self Edge for a pair of jeans. My friend introduced me to Japanese selvedge denim about six months ago. After reading more about this special denim on several forums such as style forum, hype beast, and super future, I decided to buy myself pair. Self Edge in San Francisco is one of the only places where you can physically try on a pair of Japanese selvedge jeans. I noticed that the jeans were tighter and heavier than I was used to wearing, however, the guy who helped me explained that the denim loosens up after a few months. So I took a leap of faith and bought a pair of Dry Bones. After wearing my new jeans for a few months, I was sold on Japanese selvedge jeans. My Dry Bones became my favorite, most comfortable jeans. A few weeks ago, I decided to buy another pair of jeans at Self Edge. Overall, Self Edge carries the most comprehensive selection of Japanese selvedge denim and they offer free repairs for your jeans. I felt, however, that the service was a little apathetic, especially since a pair of these jeans can cost $175-$350. Maybe this is because they are the only outfit in town. The repair service is MAGIC, magic I tell you. It's true, you can barely notice where they do the repair, and what you do notice just adds to the character. I had two pairs repaired, and they even reinforced one area to hopefully prevent any more tears in the future. It may take a couple of weeks to get them back, but well worth the wait. Came here for hemming and chain stitching on a pair of PBJ's that I bought online. Great service in the sense that when I came in and stated I just wanted them hemmed and wasn't looking to purchase anything else; they did not try to sell me on anything extra. Also great to know that when they chop some inches off to hem, that they'll won't just throw away the excess material; they'll stuff it in the back pocket for you in case you want to use it for anything else! I've been going to Self Edge for years, ever since I got my first pair of Samurais hemmed by them. Note that they don't carry Samurais, but I wanted the hem chain stitched. Later, I bought my second pair of raw denim here (Skull 5010xx) and a Skull medallion wallet. More recently, I got my third pair of raw denim hemmed here and picked up a pair of Globe Specs (the Barracks). Raw denim is certainly an investment and it's not for everyone. If you're curious about it, you should definitely check out this store as they probably have the biggest selection of raw denim in the Bay Area. I only wear jeans once or twice a week (corporate job), so it takes me awhile to get decent fades. In 5.5 years, I've only just started to break in my third pair. Faded raw denim is unique to each owner and the fades are often incredible. read more
