So upon walking in, I immediately told the woman behind the counter, "I was here in 1997, and I passed up the opportunity to milk a cow. Can you help me?" And she just laughed and told me there had been a lot of changes. The cow milking and butter churning hands on activities of the past are gone, but in its place is a gorgeous museum with amazing artifacts. It works hard to tell a linear story of the importance of agriculture in Tennessee. There's definitely a lack of identifying signage in many of the display cases, which is an oversight I'll forgive since I'd imagine most of their audience is schoolchildren that are given a formal tour. I didn't explore much of the grounds- besides a stadium used for training police horses that I definitely wasn't supposed to go in, that I peeked in after vague memories of watching some weaving display in concrete stadium seats as a kid. I will be back to view more of the grounds in warmer weather.

The Center has a an iris garden with beautiful gazebo and several walking trails! We were exploring a bit on the grounds on Tuesday, and it was lightly used by people from the neighborhood, but not crowded. Definitely a great place for a picnic, a walk, or to run around with a pup! (And great for pictures!) Try it out!

We saw vultures, a few small caves, remnants of an old car, a rock wall, bedrock limestone erosion, flotsam from the lake, a deer, lots of mud, cedar, maple and oak trees. Such a pretty place.

They have a smallish museum, in comparison to other National Park museums, but it is packed with facts and interesting artifacts. Outside there are trails to walk, and separate bike lanes. On a sunny day there are many shady areas to stop and enjoy the sights, sounds and fragrances!

A lot to see that helps visitors understand how the Civil War was fought here…read moreStones River National Battlefield is a very important Civil War site. Through the various sites it shows you the battle that occurred between December 31, 1862 to January 2, 186. It was one of the bloodiest skirmishes of the Civil War with over 23,000 casualties. The park is easy to find and there is plenty of parking. The main visitor center was closed when we visited. There are several driving stops and walking trails that take you to key areas of the battlefield, including the famous Slaughter Pen, the Round Forest, and the large National Cemetery. We spent about two hours driving the tour route and walking some of the paths. The grounds are well maintained and peaceful. There are good interpretive signs that help you understand what happened at each location. It was a very sobering but meaningful visit. The cemetery is very moving with row after row of graves and the sayings. I definitely recommend Stones River National Battlefield to anyone interested in Civil War history or just wanting a peaceful and educational stop while traveling through the Murfreesboro area. It is well worth the time.

We've driven past this park numerous times, but never officially stopped to visit, until today! The…read moreentrance for the park is right behind a Dairy Queen drive-thru which can act as a bonus treat for walking this loop a few times. There's a creek that runs alongside of the walking trail and a small grouping of trees at the end of the loop. These offer some shade and two swinging benches to take a quick break from the summer heat. Beyond that this trail is mostly in the sun, but stays flat the entire way. It's great for running, dog walking or teaching kids how to ride a bike away from traffic. There is an open field area that I guess you could have a picnic on, but you're right next to Mt. Juliet rod so there's a lot of noise traffic noise. Plus there are also two wetland sections that I'm sure have a ton of mosquitos. Maybe just get in a few quick laps here and take off. According to my phone, one lap around is 2,500 steps. Get into it!

The land itself was originally owned by William Wells Berry (1813-1876) who was the President of Third National Bank, and a wealthy landowner in town. In 1950, the people of this neighborhood voted to become it's own city, splitting from the incorporated city of Nashville. The city, in 1950, at its founding, was 1 square mile, and had less than 1,300 residents. Since then, many residents have moved out, selling their homes to local businesses. Today, there are less than 600 residents. It's important to know this, as this area of town is very quaint, with many 1950's style homes, many of which maintain that structure and charm while housing businesses. You may find yourself shopping for jewelry in what used to be someone's bedroom. While still a city, since Nashville was incorporated as a metropolitan city, it governs over Berry Hill much like a county. There are three parks in the center of Berry Hill. Iris Park is a very cute little playground. I really enjoyed the fact that the playground equipment is unique, and not the same, industrialized plasticy equipment you will find in every metro Nashville park. Berry Hill has a lot of personality, so it makes sense that its park would too.

I love that it's so big and has so much stuff for kids to do and play. I love that most of the newer playgrounds no longer have woodchips. This makes it much safer for little ones to run around.
