I'm writing to share my recent experience with Semihandmade, and strongly urge you to review other businesses for your cabinets, they are not the same company we experienced our first time around. In 2018, we had our first project with Semihandmade, and it was outstanding. We used one of SHM recommended designers and the level of support and attention to detail was perfect; our final kitchen, pantry and laundry room were beautiful! As it turned out, our home was featured in Atomic Ranch in its 2021 Design Issue, where I spoke highly of Semihandmade in that interview. We were very proud and recommended their products and services to many people over the years. After moving to Asheville, we planned another kitchen renovation and launched that in January of 2025. Even though our former designer had moved to Modern Twig, we chose Semihandmade again based on our past experience. Unfortunately, this time has been very different. We ordered roughly $28,000 in cabinet fronts-- the largest single expense in our kitchen renovation. We understood the delivery timeline, but the order arrived in separate shipments without advance notice. When my husband (who installed both kitchens) discovered one incorrect cabinet setup and a missing drawer front, he reached out to their customer service. The response from Deanna Bade was essentially, "read your contract," which I found dismissive and frankly did not sit well with me. It was clear from our IKEA design submission that our order had been entered correctly on our side but miscoded in the SHM system. My expectation was to hear, "Sorry that happened--let us make it right." Instead, I received a lecture on treating her "like a professional" before she agreed to resolve the issue--an interaction that left me feeling unwelcome as a customer. Later, as installation progressed, we discovered that the walnut doors were noticeably different in color--clearly not from a single batch, as SHM advertising promises. When I raised this, I was told replacement would require approval from the "walnut manufacturer" and would be done as a "courtesy remake." I had to remind her that Semihandmade--not a third party--was my point of purchase and that this was a quality control failure, not a favor. This caused weeks of delay, but even after the replacements arrived, there was no follow-up to confirm receipt, check color consistency, or offer an apology by Deanna or SHM customer service, only a request to do a survey. I am shocked and saddened at the decline of Semihandmade whom I have raved about for years. Given Deanna Bade describes herself as "Customer Experience Manager with a proven track record in resolving complex issues and driving customer satisfaction", she did not execute at this level at all. I realize this must be a very hard job if there is a lot of customer dissatisfaction with product and operations (which seems to be possible based on reviews), and if that is the case, this ultimately is a reflection on Semihandmade's commitment as a company to quality of product and services. Given the strong competition in this industry, I would think this is not the quality of product SHM wants to deliver or the standard of service SHM want for their customers. Mistakes happen, but a willingness to "bend over backwards" to correct them makes all the difference. Sadly, even after the new walnut order arrived, given the delay in time we realized we could not rip out our entire kitchen and start all over, so the previous construction with panels, built in shelving, etc. that had begun had to stay the same and will always be slightly off in color, a forever reminder. I reached out to the CEO, John McDonald, who did respond and apologized, which was good; but did not offer to compensate us for our customer stress, delay or final mixed matched cabinetry (although I did not ask for one either) - my point was to ensure at the top he knew how much SHM had fallen in my eyes. I've gone from being one of their strongest advocates to feeling I can no longer recommend Semihandmade. I hope my experience helps SHM to identify areas to improve both quality control and customer care, but mostly that you as a customer like me is warned and seriously looks at all the other options before you purchase from this company, I wish we had. read more

I'm extremely disappointed in this purchase. We decided to get semihand made fronts because we didn't like the selection at ikea and we thought if we paid more we would get decent quality but nope. 50% of our cabinets are bubbling, and most of the rest are peeling at the edges. We bought our Semihandmade products in 2018, the semi-matte line. Everything was beautiful at first. The first problems with delamination started to occur within two years of installation, especially on end panels to either side of our sink area, as well as the cabinet doors directly over our ovens. Now, after about 7 years, most of the door fronts in the kitchen are starting to delaminate. I contact Semihandmade several times to ask for solutions (even after learning that they discontinued their warrantee specifically for this product) and received little to no customer service response. Responses saying they would get back to me, and then they wouldn't. Honestly, would not recommend them at all. read more

The internet suggested this as a way to upgrade from Ikea cabinets. Prices are high but I ordered some samples to see for myself. Quality is terrible, the panels are already coming apart on the samples (see the other reviews which note this too). It's just MDF with a plastic-y finish -- Ikea Veddinge is better. There are several upsell gimmicks for planning the kitchen, designed to make you pay and then get locked into purchasing from them or else lose hundreds of dollars. Found THE Caesarstone quartz countertop on Pinterest, ordered samples from Semihandmade and, after viewing many samples and living with them taped to the wall, we were ready to purchase. We began getting prices locally and sticker shock ensued. That is when we reached out to Semihandmade, simply for a price comparison. I was connected with the immensely knowledgeable and talented Briauna Rapone for a video consultation. Briauna's input was invaluable, she provided us with additional options we had not considered and helped us to get to the final layout. Within 24 hours we received a quote which bested all of our local quotes, substantially, even AFTER the price adjustment for height, outlet placement, etc. We were sent an amazing team that templated and installed our countertops and backsplash and we could not be more pleased. Briauna managed the project seamlessly from start to finish. Thank you! Based on this experience we would not hesitate to recommend Briauna, Caesarstone and Semihandmade. Buyer beware!! Stay Far far away from this company! If you want an order delivered right, on time and with open communication this is THE SINGLE WORST company ive ever worked with. Details: The initial order was made 14 weeks ago and a 6-8 week delivery was quoted. After this time had passed there was still no communication from the company. None. And after calling them in week 9 hoping to get clarification, you will be send to voicemail time and time again as no one is ever around to answer the phone. The rare occasion someone does answer youll be told "well have a manager call you back" which i assure you will NEVER happen. Instead youll receive an email with a legal statement basically saying youre shit out of luck its all an estimation and well maybe get it to you at some point. Overpriced! I purchased Semihandmade fronts for my media setup using Besta (IKEA). The upper cabinets were white supermatte, and the lowers were in the Tahoe impression. They don't look high-end at all, especially the white supermatte, which looks no different from IKEA doors. One important detail that nobody mentioned is that the doors are incredibly heavy--three times heavier than regular doors. The specifications do not include the weight of the doors, so you might wrongly assume they weigh the same as regular doors. Do not use these doors for upper cabinets, and even worse, avoid the slab panels, which are also extremely heavy. I'm surprised the IKEA hinges can support the doors! I don't believe Semihandmade products are a suitable replacement for IKEA fronts. Additionally, they sold me a product that was final sale but not priced as such, preventing me from returning the slabs, which I couldn't use because of their weight. My project looks good mainly because of the TV (Samsung "The Frame") and the color of the wall. Other than that, the upper cabinets don't look high-end--they look just like IKEA. The lower cabinets are okay. I could have achieved the same look by buying the lower doors only paying one-third of what I paid in total. For my next project, I will definitely use another company and ensure I research the weight of the doors thoroughly. read more

I ordered a "Teak Floating Shelf". The picture showed a solid piece of wood. My intent was to use this as an outside shelf to match my outdoor teak furniture, and with a solid piece of wood, I knew I could keep it nice and refinish it if necessary. The price was $580, which certainly seemed in line with a wood shelf. What I received was garbage. The floating shelf is made of plywood pieces with thin (possibly) teak veneer. It is hollow. Whereas teak would last 20 years, I don't think this will last a year outside. There was no mention that it is veneer laminate plywood, no mention that it is hollow. Also, no possibility of return. I can't describe how disappointed I am with this purchase. read more

We had the same issues as other customers have mentioned in the reviews, they look great at first but don't hold up very long. I was told that my cabinet doors and drawers were out of warranty (5 years) and that I would need to re-purchase the same ones to solve the problem. They offered a discounted quote but in my opinion, it wasn't enough of a discount for me to re-purchase a product that won't hold up over time. We raved about this product before we had these issues and now I won't refer anyone knowing you will have to re-purchase and replace it in such a short time frame. So, surprisingly, you should go with IKEA over this product, it will be less expensive and last a lot longer. read more

UPDATE: Semihandmade has clarified that they "do not provide direct replacements for Ikea products." Please see their reply below. Be VERY wary if your intention is to replace existing IKEA cabinet fronts with Semihandmade products as, by Semihandmade's own admission, this is not what they do! ORIGINAL REVIEW: Overpriced, poor quality and just not useful. I ordered two drawer fronts (15 inch by 6/12 inch) to replace some old Ikea drawer fronts from Semihandmade's Ikea replacement line. The order cost a whopping $168 PLUS $25 shipping and that was WITH a $33.60 discount (the normal price would have been $226 including shipping for two drawer fronts that are less than 7 inches in height!). The items took a month to arrive and what arrived cannot be used. The Semihandmade drawer fronts (pictured here) are at least 1/4" thicker than the Ikea drawer fronts. If I use these fronts they will extend past the cabinets doors below creating a cheap, thrown together look in my kitchen. Why would a company advertise that their products can be used to replace Ikea fronts, and yet the dimensions of their product do not allow them to be integrated with the original Ikea product? This cannot be a mistake on Semihandmade's part - and there was no option for me to order a drawer front of a lesser thickness (all of the other dimension work, by the way) Perhaps the intention is to force the customer to replace ALL of their Ikea fronts with Semihandmade items all to once. I do not have a huge kitchen, but I did a quick calculation and it would cost me about $4400 to replace all of my existing fronts with Semihandmade replacements. That's more than I originally paid for the Ikea cabinets and fronts combined. Also, the finish on the Semihandmande fronts is already starting to pucker and peel on the edges. You can see this in the photo which was taken about 5 minutes after I received and (immediately) opened the box. There IS a bit of upside though. This $169 experience has convinced me to try to sand and repaint my existing Ikea drawer fronts myself. I am off to the paint store to find samples to match the color and, if I invest $200-300 in a really good paint sprayer, I still end up thousands of dollars ahead. Plus, I will have the ability to patch any dings or scratches going forward. In the end, it was totally worth it to determine that the Semihandmade product is an overpriced, poorly made, non-starter. There is no quality control on color or consistency that is typical of this type of work. I understand variation and will accept, but what was provided shows a lack of selection on semihandmade's part There are statements on their website to help the team hide from their clear lack desire to make consistent product, but no pictures to actually show how bad it can be. BUYER BEWARE! This is first time I am reviewing a business on Yelp. I like to resolve issues that I may have with a business privately. However, I placed an order for cabinets doors, only to receive a partial and damaged order. I received my order with four missing doors. One damaged door and two refrigerator panels that are the incorrect size. I've been going thru this debacle and incompetent behavior for three weeks without any solution. I have been blamed for your designer's incompetence and lack of preparing my order correctly. This company cannot read nor interpret IKEA's drawing accurately. I have provided proof with pictures of the damaged door, missing peninsula doors and incorrect size refrigerator panels. It's important when designing a kitchen that specific measurements and appliance specifications are adhered to. Semihandmade is not taking responsibility for the cabinet doors missing from my invoice, yet I did not create the invoice or review the specific materials required for the design. Cabinet and drawer fronts 6 years old and coming apart. I'm so disappointed. I love the look and what seemed like really good quality of Semihandmade. The heat sealed fronts are coming apart from the backs in a bubbling effect. This started with one by the stove less than 5 years ago. I figured it was because it was next to the stove where there is a lot of steam. I started turning on the fan constantly so that it would not get worse. That said, a well-made product that goes in the kitchen should not be damaged by steam. Now there are multiple other doors not near the stove that are coming apart. I called the company, and they informed me that they do not make the finish any more, that my warranty was only for two years and so there was nothing they could do. I would have been fine with not them, replacing the doors, but picking them up and reheating to secure them back down but they said no. The current warranty is only for five years. Be warned! This cost me over $10,000 and they look tacky now. I expected the IKEA foundations to fall apart before the fronts. The fronts cost more than the actual cabinets themselves. read more

We installed our Semihandmade kitchen in 2019, and within 2 years the doors and side panels began to delaminate. I reached out when it first happened and were provided with two new panels free of charge and felt this was a one-off occurence. Since then, all edges are peeling away. When I contacted Semihandmade customer service again, I was told this is due to excessive heat exposure in my kitchen (one of the panels was adjacent to a dishwasher, sold to us for this exclusive purpose)? A curious defence from a company that sells a product designed for a kitchen. At this point, even the hinge side edge of cabinet doors are delaminating. Reading between the lines, SHM knew there was an issue with the original maker of this line and have since switched. When we purchased SHM, there were very few reviews from homeowners who had lived with them for more than a year. With hindsight, I would never have worked with SHM, knowing we will be having to re-do the entire kitchen in the next few years. My best friend currently is wood glue. read more

I am leaving a better review than I may initially have as I spent a week back and forth with their customer service. As other reviews have noted what you see online is not what you will receive in real life. The colour of the doors I received was almost entirely white versus what was clearly shown as a light wooden door online with some white washing. When I emailed them about this they agreed that the two were not aligned and they would change their images online (they have yet to). The problem that I had here was after waiting a month for these doors the customer service team then made it seem like they would do me a favour to refund me but still expected me to pay for the shipping of 63lbs of doors back to California from NJ. This was 10% of what I originally spent on the doors and it just wasn't in my budget to throw that money away because their imagery is misleading & they didn't deliver what was ordered. Now I am going to have to prime and paint these doors to a colour that works for us. Clearly below there are many other people with similar complaints so it seems like they need to overhaul their system. They really did the bare minimum to correct this problem. The quality of the product is definitely superior to Ikea but perhaps still a little plasticky and I feel like the full price of these items is definitely on the higher end - I think had the doors actually looked like they were supposed to I might not have minded paying so much for them. They were picked well and delivered without any damage. Would I recommend the company to a friend? No. But I would definitely advise ordering samples if you do plan on buying anything from this company. read more

I called them panicking and in tears telling them not to cancel my order. Telling them I am 7 months pregnant and I want my kitchen done before I give birth. This is after I spoke with the shipping company who said they could absolutely still deliver the order to me. Not only did CX hang up on me but so did the owner when my husband called to say that the order was on his CC and they had no right to cancel. I ended up in the hospital due to stress caused to myself and the baby so claiming the owner had no intention to cause harm when they KNOW they could have delivered that order is just plain gaslighting. Semihandmade is simply a wonderful company. I had great communication with them throughout the whole process from before for my purchase until after installation. I used Ikea kitchen cabinets in my bathroom with the paint grade slab fronts and it looks custom and beautiful. The only thing I don't love about my choice is that the IKEA kitchen cabinets are deeper than a typical standard bathroom cabinet which puts you farther away from the mirror than you normally would be. This is something I did not foresee and if I'm being honest I don't love that aspect of it. Probably since I'm in my 40's and my close up vision isn't quite what it was a few years ago! ; ) That has nothing to do with semihandmade it's just something to think about if you decide to use Ikea kitchen cab's in a bathroom. The extra counter space is a nice trade off, however! Lastly, if I had it to do over again I'd probably pick one of Semihandmade'a existing colors or finishes. Having to get the doors painted on top of everything else in our renovation proved to be more hassle than I'd have guessed and I don't think our painters did a fantastic job. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND Semihandmade; I bought their cabinet doors almost 4 years ago for my kitchen and they started delaminating after about a year. Sometimes I get something akin to a papercut when I open and shut them because the back piece is separating from the front part of the face. They are also cracked at several locations on the corners . The last straw for me: the top part is bubbling up where the trim of the shaker meets the depressed part; hard to describe but it makes the top part of each corner look dirty because it casts a strange shadow. It seems like Semihandmade did not quality test this product at all. Even though it was cheap, I expected it to last at least 5 years, not 1 year. Such a waste of resources; I feel silly for not doing more research and just following the hype. Full disclosure: I never reached out to them so they could fix things. Our foil cabinet fronts started bubbling after a few years. Our brand new kitchen renovation looks awful because of these fronts. It was also painstaking dealing with customer service who responded as if nothing was wrong with their product and that it must be the conditions in our kitchen. They eventually sent us new fronts that we would have to pay someone to reinstall. Why would we want to put the same product up that lasts only a few years? The real question is why do they behave as though it's a one-time incident? Sort these reviews by one star and you'll see it's a common occurence. Why do they continue to sell this product? Their other products may be fantastic but the foil ones are not. Being a small business doesn't mean you have to continue to sell inferior products. They should fully refund their customers who have had to pay additional money to replace their front with a different product. Just received my walnut cabinets after a long wait. The design process was great and why I chose Semihandmade. They took my ikea plans and turned them into a cart. Super Easy! However, I am pretty let down by what I just received. The inside of the cabinets are covered with a beautiful veneer with lots of the typical walnut variation. However, on the fronts they use a veneer with almost no variation... makes no sense and it really disappointing since you can't return them. If you want walnut cabinets, I recommend going somewhere where they let you select which veneer. I asked Semihandmade if I could do this and they told me no. $7K late I have some okay cabinet fronts but I'm not in love like I hoped to be. On the few fronts that have variation there is also really weird looking vertical lines that looks pretty bad. Again... Go somewhere else for walnut cabinets where you can pick your veneer. In response to the company response, this is a bad veneer and not worth the over $7k I paid for just fronts. There is no variation in the grain so it just looks striped like something fake from IKEA, the weird vertical line streaks look like issues with the stain not being taken evenly, and there are multiple fronts where the edge tape was damaged when assembled and instead of replacing. I don't usually leave reviews but I wanted to hop on here to discuss Semi-Handmade's excellent customer service. We actually had our kitchen installed nearly 5 years ago. Last summer, we started noticing that the faces were increasingly delaminating, buckling and cracking across most of our cabinets. Very concerned, I reached out to Semi-Handmade and they immediately admitted that there was a manufacturing issue involving a glue failure with some of their orders over a few month span, years ago. Our kitchen was affected by this issue. After speaking with their lovely representative Deanna, as well as the owner John, they offered to entirely replace the kitchen at no cost. I just recently had everything re-installed and it looks amazing. I can appreciate and understand that there can be unforeseen issues with any product or service one buys, and I am so happy with the resolution Semi-Handmade provided us with. This review is for their showroom experience only, not the quality of product or the whole ordering process since we have not decide to work with them yet. It was easy to request to come in and set up the time to meet their staff which right now with the pandemic, They are being more cautious to limits the amount of people to be in there. They have the finishes and colors to show you in person which is helpful. But I'm quite surprised how small the show room is, not a lot of live examples of the kitchen to shown other than the small planks. They also have some examples for boxi which is their own version of IKEA cabinets but with better quality(according to their words, looks kinda the same to me) and higher price point too. It does look nice with the design, but unfortunately it only comes in black now and they are most likely not going to have any other color because it just launched couple months ago! We would've go with a white one right away if they have it, but they don't which is disappointing :( please consider that, white is such a common color that goes with everything, to not have it as an option sounds like a big mistake! Anyway, staff was nice and helpful. We don't have all the exact measurements but she has some mock-up kitchen which has a breakdown pricing that we can use to gauge the overall cost. read more

The person in the showroom made the consult totally uncomfortable. I did not feel welcome. I took the time to travel to the showroom and took time out of my day just to be barely spoken to. I made the most out of it- and at least saw the materials - but likely not to use this company. read more
