There are so many things out of the control of the worker and people here will go to LENGTHS even and say the store should be SHUT DOWN?? If you know what you want, don't need a tester, and plan to be in and out - go here. But for help and interacting with staff, go to a different location. I went here looking for a new lipstick. My friend brought me here because she said you can try the lipsticks out via a sample they create for you. There are a few shorter, rounder women working there that did not offer me help. Eventually, I was able to talk with Jasmine (I think that is her name) and she was really great. The problem? One of the women working there, instead of directly helping me, simply overheard my request walking by and said "We don't offer samples on lipsticks" although Jasmine already told me they do, and my friend brought me here specifically because she has gotten this service. I told her I was already told "yes" and no need to worry - I'm working with Jasmine. Welp, when Jasmine finally had to time to meet with me (she was being pulled several different directions b/c there was no other staff helping on floor) she told me they radio'd her and WOULDN'T allow her to let me sample the shavings. Jasmine though was awesome, and gave me some gloss samples that I might come back and buy. But keep in mind, I'm looking for lipsticks. Fast forward to today, when I get an email from Sephora, with the title "Sample whatever you want, whenever you want" and the first line "Samples are a stable a Sephora". Yes they are. Everyone who knows Sephora knows that. I've been shopping and dropping dime here for years. So the service sucks here. You can get samples, just don't go here for them, as the rounder ladies with the ombres will not actually help, just micromanage their employees in an unfriendly way over your shoulder. And look at you dismissively. Do look for Jasmine though, a gem, who should be the manager here. She actually seems to like her job and beauty. But she's going to be busy though, so be prepared to wait. read more

This location in general is fine. As a dude, I usually find myself in here as my wife searches for..whatever. Interestingly enough, this location has plenty of men's products - many of which, I do consume for my own personal use. So, yeah - I like it there. I will say this though, the staff that I encountered today was less than pleasant. A fellow dude that I was with asked a pricing question regarding a cologne, the employee seemed a bit agitated by his question(s), forcing him to simply move on and not want to buy anything. I understand, bad days happen, but i'm sure that some in Sephora's finance department would of loved to see someone spend $100+ on scents... Also, as a husband who watches his wife do much makeup and follow many make-up "geeks" on YouTube/social media, I would imagine that the makeup quality of the employees finished face would be presentable, maybe even attractive - does not always seem to be the case. You can find everything under the sun @ Sephora! Helpful staff, fully stocked store that's whats nice about a grand opening. I purchased Dior Show mascara, a nail tip marker (to create the french manicure look) and a great pumice stone. I didn't really need anything else, but when I do this is the place for one stop shopping. Also, they were giving away Sephora shopping totes on opening day. It's a clean enough location and I have been coming here for years--until now. What happened to this Sephora? The greeter at the door barely acknowledged me. The cashier was sweet but the manager Carla and especially manager Nicole was both condescending and rude. You'd think they would treat another employee somewhat with respect but nope. If they treat employees this way I wonder how they treat their clients. It's obvious how they treat their clients by the amount of one and two star reviews this store has. This experience left such a bad taste in my mouth and made me sad because we don't treat our clients that way at Sephora. This isn't how we are trained. I buy a lot of stuff from Sephora, this time I really just wanted to shop for something new. I really go to any one but I always have the best time @ the location at bay st. Luis helped me walk around and find everything I needed. Marina also gave me a facial. I'll be coming back and looking for them both! I felt super welcomed by the woman (I think Manager) who lead me in the direction to get help. I'm happy with what I bought and the service. It was a pretty great shopping trip! Although mostly for the female market, they have a small section for men that sells fragrances. I think I also saw a makeup line targeted for men? Maybe that might do well in Europe but I don't know about the U.S. I will occasionally purchase some moisturizer when my supply runs low, but that's maybe 1x a year, or every other year. Anyway, if you're a guy and don't want to be bothered, the sales clerks here mostly flag down the women. They figure you're either the boyfriend or husband tag along so they leave you alone. It seemed like every single employee I ran into had some funky eye brows and eyeliners that looked like they were done by a 3 year old child. Really?! I ain't no girlie-girl. When I was a teenager and all my girlfriends were playing with their hair and makeup, I was in the kitchen making snacks. Sometimes I'd slap on some mascara and lip gloss but that was about it. My brother was a retail queen and he used to have friends at all the makeup counters and he'd always encouraged us to get makeovers so I learned early that expensive makeup makes a difference. . .so I know exactly what I want. It takes me YEARS to go through makeup but even my tomboy ass knows that mascara goes bad and so at the six month mark, I head to Sephora for a new tube. . .ugh. Firstly, I want to reach up my nose, into my brain and yank out my olfactory nerves. . .why the hell does that place have to smell like that. . is it depressed? There is such a thing as Perfume Depression and I think Sephora has it . . . when you're registering perfume as a flavor on your palate, that's too much. If I could make it through there without breathing, I would but just running the gauntlet of HELLOS takes almost ten minutes. .. but I guess that's better than being ignored. . I typically come here with my co-worker who is obsessed with trying various eye-cremes even though she looks like she's 19. It was her eye-creme obsession that made me realize they provide samples upon request. Sweet! I knew Body Shop did that, but was not aware of the Sephora hook up. I'm not a big fan of their self branded makeup line and prefer Nars. But, that is the beauty of Sephora. You have plenty to choose from because they carry everything your pretty lil head could ever possibly need. You can find everything from Dior to the Smurfette make up collection (cuz everyone needs makeup with a slutty character from a cartoon that was canceled almost 20 years ago) I love coming in here to check out the new fragrances and I love that this location provides me with that luxury without having to go to an actual mall. When I was in college, with a full-time job, I had my first experience buying make up from the scary cosmetics-counter women at a department store. I was terribly intimidated, and often made purchases out of guilt for... inconveniencing a sales associate by asking her to get two or three different shades of lipstick out of that locked glass display/vault. She'd roll her eyes and sigh. "That's 'Tustin Trollop' and it's $29.95." Since then, I have purchased some half-way decent jewelery and a few watches and was jolted by how similar the shopping process is for these vastly different items. me: "Hi. May I see this pendant?" SA: *unlocking case* This one? *presenting item* me: "Hmmmm. It's pretty... But I don't think it's me. May I take a look at these earrings?" SA: *unlocking case* "These are 1/2 carat each." me: "Huh. What about... those chandelier earrings?" SA: "You'll look like a Tustin Trollop. They're $2,995." Sephora is like... a make up buffet. While I love the freedom of access, I hate the freedom of access, because I'm thinking about how freely EVERYBODY who walks through the store is accessing the "tester" items. As I cannot autoclave tester lipsticks, I end up drawing on my hand a lot. While not formally trained make up artists, the associates are very generous with sampling products and offering a few glib, scripted lines about nearly every product range. Downside: there are fewer flamboyantly gay men, drag queens and cross-dressers than at the MAC counter. And generally speaking, if I want advice on what product will mask any real or imagined shadows under my eyes, a drag queen at the MAC counter is not going to lead me astray. Because of my rather traumatic experiences with [born] women at department store make up counters in my formative years, I'm still wary of them, in a make up selling capacity. While I have left the MAC counter looking like a drag queen, after a "complimentary with minimum purchase" make-over... at least I know I could go to a tranny bar and TOTALLY pass. It is disconcerting to me that I don't ever covet the Sephora Sales Associates "looks" or make up styling. Maybe at the Powell Street location or back in Orange County, at South Coast Plaza. On my last spree through this particular store location, I was very distracted by the ummm... blemishes that the youthful and enthusiastic SA had on her skin. I almost wanted to ask, "So... I tried THIS colloidal clay masque with sulfur in it a few months ago, when I had a stress-related break out. What do you think of it....? Ever tried it...?" I just can't bring myself to purchase skincare products from somebody who hasn't got enviable skin. In like manner, I would never trust a predatory sub-prime mortgage broker in Orange County who didn't own a home herself, drove a crappy-assed, bare-bones, entry-level Mercedes, and is now unemployed and living with three roommates. Worst Sephora experience ever. All I wanted was to get the "Gimme Brow" from Benefit, in and out within 5 minutes. I went to the Benefit counter, there were no testers available. I saw there was only 2 boxes left. Not to judge, but when you see those boxes are open and all ripped, obviously you either don't want it OR you would want to make sure you get the right color. This associate creeped up next to me and said (with attitude), " you know when you open these boxes, I would need to turn them into tester because they are no longer saleable" EXCUSE ME? Thanks for asking if I needed any help? Thanks for telling me that you were not aware of your products not being shown? I told him that they were no testers and these boxes were in those conditions when I got there. STRAIGHT UP walked away from me. SO RUDE. I went to find another associate who gladly help me finding the right color and new box. I saw with my peripherials that the creeper associate was looking at me to see if I was going to tell on him. No one asks me if I need help, they look at me like they don't know why I'm there in the first place, they are stingy with free samples (which they are supposed to give out), they rush me through checkout and never ask me if I want to redeem my points, and they push me away from the makeup counter like I'm some disgusting creature instead of a customer. Also, there is some middle-aged white guy who works there who, when I asked for the faster mobile checkout for credit card holders, rolled his eyes at me and said "this isn't a safeway." WTF? I honestly have no idea what color I am. All I know is that I needed foundation and I was willing to get whatever they recommended. Luckily, they do this color-matching thing and some poor gal kept coming over with different things of goo because apparently I'm a pretty hard-to-nail-down color. Luckily, she found something and I was like "Cool! Can you help match me with a couple other things?" and she did. It was awesome because that lovely chick asked me a few questions and took all of the guesswork and unpleasantness of makeup shopping from me. The products here are great in terms of variety, quality, and such, but woahhhhhh the customer service is really pretty bad. I had a similar experience to a lot of the other negative reviews: I asked for some assistance, I waited an absurd amount of time for the assistance, then the person who finaly helped me seemed confused and disoriented; she told me she'd find someone else to answer my question that was so perplexing to her (which was if she could recommend a long-lasting liquid foundation good for sensitive skin, so???). I waited over 10 minutes for the second person to come over; she did help me successfully. However, three other people were brought over to her (by the same confused girl) while I was being helped, so I had to waste even more time hearing her recommendations for people who wanted: eye cream for 60+; glow in the dark makeup products; and information on the hello kitty line. I am extremely disappointed with the rudeness I experienced today at the Emeryville Sephora. I came to the store in-between clients, in an attempt to add some new foundations to my kit. I was prepared to spend a few hundred dollars but instead I just left with samples that I honestly didn't even want anymore after the interaction with the floor manager. When I first walked in and asked for Fenty Beauty, I was directed with no issues. Once I found a few colors I decided to test them out. During this time a heavy set AA woman was restocking the supplies (sponges, q-tips) and completely in the way. She did't acknowledge me nor did she say "excuse me". She could have restocked another area so that I, a paying customer could have utilized the mirror. After finding a few shades I wanted to sample, I asked the gentleman (named above) who was standing at the front door, if he could make me a few samples. He expressed that he was unable to leave the door and asked me to bring him the shades (why not just call another associate? There were several walking around unoccupied). As I hand him the 4 shades I want to sample the gentleman says in a very condescending tone "No one is going to be this nice, the limit is usually 3..." My response was "3 is fine". As he's making the samples, here comes the girl restocking the supplies. However, this time she actually acknowledges me but only because she was about to start a conversation with the gentleman making the samples. As a business owner and MUA with over 16 years of experience and having worked for two LVMH companies, one being Sephora CORPORATE, I know the standard. I didn't even go in with super high expectations but I definitely don't need to be looked over or talked to in an uncomfortable manner. This experience left a bad taste in my mouth and I will probably never patronize this store again. It was just really uncomfortable and uninviting. read more

I walked in here expecting to find a new every day cream. 5 associates walked straight past me, no greeting, no assistance, nothing. I'm not a make up junkie and I am usually wearing little to no make up (I visited with no make up and perhaps they all thought I would walk out not buying anything thus did not help). Needless to say, I will not be going back, and I did not buy anything. Another note, testers were more than likely not available and the store was super crowded which was not their fault but definitely killed my experience. There were moms running after their kids and pushing me aside to get to their creatures and no apology. Those moms were assisted and hogged up all the mirrors but not me! The One Plus: This place has Alot of great beauty merchandise! The Super, Big, Fat ,1,000 lb. Gorilla In the Room With You Minus: Snotty, snotty, snotty salespeople at this store! No one should be treated rudely for spending the kind of money you can easily spend here! Recommendation: Only go to this store to check out the merchandise to get an idea or a feel for the beauty product(s) you want. Then, go buy the product(s) you want online at Amazon. You will have the leisure of shopping at home. You will not pay any sales tax for your purchase, and, if your purchase goes over $100, which it will, I don't think you will be charged for shipping either. If you absolutely do not need your beauty products right now, this very minute, buying online can save you some money. And, unless you are a masochist, buying online will keep you from experiencing the Sephora-Emeryville way of life. One of the survey questions/tips on this establishment was if Sephora-Emeryville was wheelchair accessible. Are you kidding me? With the way they treat their customers? No, no, no, no, no... If you go in there in a wheelchair, God Bless you. You've got some guts. If the salespeople there treat customers walking into the store like cretins, they are so not going to give the time of day to someone in a wheelchair. No way. I feel like they really should have people that are actually makeup artists working there. Let me preface this review by saying that I love make up and I love Sephora and all their products, and for the most part, I find that their employees are really helpful. This review is for this particular location and their seemingly 'sloppy' sales associates. These gals just aren't on it. Yesterday, I went in to purchase a couple of eyeliners from Make Up Forever's new line called Aqualiner. I called the store to ask them if they had it, and let her know which one I was looking for, and the SA said she'd check. She told me the had it in stock. I come in, of course, and there are none to be found. They don't even have a display for the eyeliners I was looking for! So I mosey on to look over the skincare items because I am in the market for some anti-aging cream. The gal there was helpful and was raving about Philosophy's 'Miracle Worker' line. I purchased the anti-aging moisturizer and concentrate. I found out when I got home that Sephora sells a whole SET for even cheaper than what I bought my stuff for. The set includes both items that I purchased AND a $70 retinoid solution w/pads. I felt that the SA should've told me that there was a whole freaking set for around the same price! Now I have to go back to the stupid store and exchange what I bought. To top it off, I called this morning to make sure they carried the Miracle Worker gift set so I could make the exchange, and they left me hanging on hold for fifteen minutes! UGH! I am so over it. Okay i love Sephora in general and this one is pretty nice, its on the small side but that's okay. I'm a VIB so yeah, i'm here often. I've had good and bad experiences with the SAs here but that's like anyhwere. You cannot go to any Sephora store without being asked a few times " did you need any help?" so thats good (and well annoying). I can usually find what I'm looking for and the SAs are usually fairly knowledgeable when I have a question. I've had my Color IQ done here, which was off by a shade (IMO) but its helpful to know so at least i have an idea of what shade i will be in the foundations they carry. It would be nice if they actually had matches for all the foundations they carry. Its kind of a bummer they don't have Tom Ford private blend colognes in the stores. Who wouldn't love Sephora? As a dude who does not throw metro gang signs but enjoys scented-soaps and scrubs that smell like cake, I like Sephora. It's a good place to buy gifts for the girls in your life...and for the self in your life too. I should join their members program...free gifts sound enticing but I'm afraid what it would say about me...I guess all it could say is that I'm awesome. read more
