On my Summer Fridays I like to go shop-ping! (Post-food and post-beer, which seems to enable most decisions.) Apparently so does everyone else. I needed new cologne and originally planned on going to a department store, where I've always bought new cologne. At the suggestion of a friend, I went to Sephora because it was closer to work. They have a great selection for men's perfumey, but unlike a department store, it is crowwwded. I was afraid to spray samples, lest I get it on some poor, unsuspecting patron just trying to walk by. I went in with the desire to try something new, so it took me a while to really nail down my scent. Am I fresh? Woodsy? Light? I just don't know! I monopolized the section while I figured it out. Eventually I did settle on a nice smell, all the while praying that it will help drop undies and standards. Booty, booty, booty, booty rockin' everywhere, you know? I also decided to treat myself to a Jack Black* mint lip balm because my luscious lips deserve it. The place has great products, but all at a pretty penny. Sephora is always the same wherever you go in the city. The only difference is the location. What I do like about this place is that everything is well organized and you can find everything. The staff is pretty friendly as well. What I really like is the Men's Fragrance section. All colognes have a tester and you can sniff each one. I normally come in to do a touch up of what I already have. All the girls come in here and use all the make up before going out. Why can't the guys do that too with the cologne? read more

I used to think that my minimal makeup aesthetic and not-so-trendy clothing was what made the Sephora employees completely disinterested and unhelpful in assisting me, but after conferring with several coworkers and reading the reviews on here, well... I guess it's not just me. Sephora is amazing for skincare products and makeup, but the staff at this location leave so much to be desired. On my last visit, I stopped in to purchase a new bottle of the mascara that I've been using for the last three years. When I didn't see it on the shelf, I asked one of the salesladies standing around snapping her gum in boredom. Not only did she not know the product that I asked about, she then brushed it off and tried to act like the product never existed. Okaaaaaay. Then she started reading off the labels on the display and condescendingly told me that the other mascaras would definitely work for my needs. After it became clear that I was not going to be a sell, she left in a huff. Seriously? Do yourself a favour and walk the few blocks to the Park & 17th St location. Not only are the staff members more helpful there, they don't try to treat you like an idiot who doesn't know anything about the beauty world. read more

I go to Sephora in some capacity every single day. Sometimes I go to the online store (because they have some products that are online specials) but most of the time, I go to the stores for some instant makeup gratification. The salespeople are usually kind of helpful, but with so many samples, you can just figure out what you want on your own. Plus, they have a frequent buyers card (the beauty insiders card) and for every $100 you spend, you get some kind of awesome sample (large samples of Philosophy face wash, mascara, and other makeup). read more

This is a review about the store itself, not Sephora. Sephora is great! I work by here and go often. There are WAY TOO MANY PEOPLE WORKING HERE! They follow you around like a pack of wolves. Forget going in there to just look around. Even with headphones I get asked questions and have people come up to me and put products on the backside of my hands. If they aren't talking to you they are congregating together just standing there. This is one of the smallest Sephora's in NYC. You don't need a staff upwards of 20+ everyday! read more

Today marked my first time ever going into a Sephora. It's not very large but it was clean, the staff I dealt with was friendly and it was cool in there on a hot day. My major gripe is that it is totally overpriced. Granted, I saw quality brands & this does seem like the place to go for a top notch hair dryer or hair care products but I also think I'm not Sephora's target consumer since my tastes aren't so high end. read more

I been to this Sephora a couple of times. The customer service reps can be nice but when they are swamped tend to be rude. I am NOT a fan of this Sephora. I've been in during off-peak hours, when it's full, and when it's completely empty, yet I've never had an employee help me. Even when I'm the only one in the store. If I wasn't such a fan of the brand itself, I'd ignore this store. I tend to stop by before/after work (since the office is just across the street) to pick up a new nail polish or eyeliner, and after my last visit, I decided to just trek the extra few blocks to the Union Square location. The employees at the counter are friendly enough, but the employees that are supposed to help the customers were almost useless. I had a few questions about the different eyeliners and eyeshadows available, and the employee that FINALLY came around to help me (about 10 minutes after I stood in front of the eyeshadows looking absolutely clueless) just didn't seem to want to help me at all. I know I'm absolutely clueless when it comes to makeup, but isn't that why I go to Sephora? At other locations, I could ask a question and end up leaving with a makeover because they teach me how to use the products I buy. SO bottom line: unless you're looking to just go in and get out fast, take the trip to the Union Square location. They're way friendlier and more helpful. read more

I had an obsession with Sephora when I lived in Europe and could on occasion go to France and visit these fabulous stores. Now, my passion has come to me. Of all the Sephora locations, this one has the friendliest and most knowledgeable staff. Beware: go in with a purpose with something in mind to purchase, otherwise you might get bamboozled into buying their name brand stuff...which is not too good and too pricey. read more

I love sephora and trying out all their makeup. But finding a GOOD sales associate is luck of the draw. Last time I went, the girl that helped me didn't spend much time explaining the product to me, and acted like I was 'yet another person she'd HAVE to help today.' This store is a wonderful place to get bath and body supplies, make-up, hair products and fragrances. I love coming here, it's so nice and organized, and their products are somewhat unique. You could spend minutes upon minutes just looking and smelling everything. Whether it's someone's birthday, or someone is getting married, you could find a lotion set for anything. They all smell wonderful too. If you sign up for their card you get a free gift around the time of your birthday. In addition to lotions and shower gels, they have lots of different kinds of make-up and fragrances. Even if you can't find it in the store, you could buy things online and most of the time they will have it. They have lots of name brand make-up, and they have cruelty free ones as well. I really believe this store has quality products. Also, if you buy something as a gift you should ask for one of those beautiful boxes and ribbons or sometimes they have nice bags. No it's not super cheap bit it isn't over the top pricy. You get what you pay for here and there is so much to choose from. Every time I have been in this store I have always been helped. Avoid the male employee with the slicked back hair at all costs. Rude, hostile, and totally unprofessional. I buy something at this Sephora probably once a month but never again after my experience tonight. I went to the Fresh display and tried some of the lip scrub. As I was applying it in the mirror, a male employee came over and was clearly agitated, rearranging the display and huffing. I wasn't sure why he was upset until he CAME OVER to me and said "You took too much, that's why" in a really nasty way. I was so taken aback that I apologized (for what? Trying a free sample? There were applicator sticks laid out clearly meant for customers to use). He said nothing, just scowled then proceeded to hover near me and mutter to another employee about how he "can't stand that." I felt extremely uncomfortable that he was in my space and he's a tall, bigger dude. I will definitely NEVER be coming back to this location. read more

I love Sephora and normally I don't have bad experiences in most locations. This one in particular I'm not so crazy about. Minus one star because they don't ever carry anything I am looking for so I have to go to the Union Square location. Minus another star due to poor customer service. The staff that is supposed to be on the floor to help its clients/customers look miserable and unapproachable. When I have asked for samples to test on my skin before purchase, most of the times the person assisting me (while making the sample) is gossiping with another staff member. One, that's is super unprofessional as I do not wish to listen to people badmouth others and/or listen to your life problems. Two, I feel like I'm interrupting when I want to ask more about the product I'll be testing or if I have other questions in general. I get that some times work is boring, but when you are taking care of someone...take care of someone. Pay attention to them. I've only had a good experience there once with a guy that was stationed by the skin care area. He knew his stuff! Helped me change two products from my skin care routine and what a difference! Unfortunately, I have not seen him again. I rather go to other locations. read more

Sephora is my happy place and while this Sephora is no exception, this location is more a Sephora Express. They don't offer every brand or every product. Their Beauty Studio is a modest two stations, so if you have your make-up done here, you or the artist beating your face get knocked into every so often. I like the location and the products they do offer, but call ahead and make sure they have what you're looking for. If you find yourself in need of a more full-service Sephora, walk down to Union Square or up to 34/7. read more

I am not sure what is going down at this Sephora-but things have gone slightly down hill over the past couple of years at this location(5th ave. Flatiron,NY) . It's a shame since it's sort of my neighborhood location :( Staff is sometimes helpful but oftentimes not. You have to hunt someone down, or feel like you are interrupting their conversation and are made to feel like you are bothering them(while they are supposed to be doing their jobs) . One time I wanted a staff member to just apply eyeliner or show me how ( i was purchasing said eye liner) and the heavily made up manager made it sound like I was asking the associate to perform brain surgery! I got my eyeliner on in the end, but it was a challenge. I also had a full makeover where you buy $50 worth of stuff. It was way heavier than I was used to and the first person that approached the chairs (10 mins late) said " which one is she?' in a weird tone. Overall management needs to be changed at this location-because it all comes from the top down! Very un professional staff for the most part! read more

The trick to going to this Sephora is to go during off-peak hours, when the store is pretty empty and the staff can really help you. Otherwise, it's a madhouse. The last time I went was after work, during a snowstorm. It was almost empty, and the man who helped me was dead set on getting me as many samples as I could carry. I can't argue with that! But they recently redid the layout of the store, and now it's a little tricky to find some things, especially if you go during peak hours and no one's around to help you. read more

I came here to try out some new products and pick up a travel perfume. I did not feel this Sephora catered to customers in the best way. I was not asked if I needed help with anything and once I did ask for help I felt as if I was being an inconvenience more than a customer. I asked for a sample for a foundation instead of being offered one and when I was given a sample, I was given the last few pumps of a foundation but it was unhygienic because she opened the bottle and used the little stick inside the foundation to put it in a sample container instead of opening a new foundation. Over all I would only come back here to quickly pick up something I already had run out of and wouldn't have to try or ask for help. read more

Horrible location, they never have any of the products and on top of that just simply horrible customer service. The girls on the floor all they do is gossip and just stand there being unapproachable. I asked one of the girls (who by the way had horrible makeup on with too much highlight looking so extra yuck) for help on IT cosmetics I wanted to try the CC Cream and she literally said no lol she would try another product on me but not that one. She looked around to "find someone" to help and at the end of the day I ended up applying it on myself and I was going to buy it but decided no to I just didn't even feel comfortable at all! everyone who works here is so wildly helpful , knowledgeable and unfortunately as well, overwhelmed. One thing i don't think many sephora shoppers understand is that services are performed by availability only and very often this location is only running with 60% of the staff it really needs. there are SO MANY weird corporate policies working in retail as well and i know that when you're working on the sales floor at sephora you actually can find yourself in some hot water if you're spending too much time with one client and not finding opportunities to "multi-client service" in particular during those busy peak hours and days when they're already faced with understaffing issues. furthermore the system allows people to schedule for free multiple appointments which again can interfere with any one persons ability to get a walk in mini because they have to be prepared for X client to walk in at any of the three times they've scheduled a full appointment for. the staff does their damn well best to make sure that everyone is looked after and cared for and sometimes that just required us as clients to be a bit more vocal about what we need help with, they're not psychic after all so how are they supposed to just offer us X, Y, and Z when we can't even articulate what it is we're looking for? anyone else who thinks they can fix the system with the snap of a finger, i'd invite you to put on that tunic and pick up that brush belt and walk a mile in the shoes of those doing their best in spite of corporate greed. read more

Had a quick return due to a product breaking me out and waited in line for them to tell me they close at 8 and can't do returns past then (I was in line before 8pm and, oh look, yelp says you close at 9) Favorite part was the first register that opened to me said oh, I can't do returns, so when I went to the next register that opens, who does she turn to for approval for a he return but register lady #1!? Either way, a customer waiting in line should receive the service they are waiting in line for. If you have a hard stop at 8, kick everyone out at 8?! The minute Kristina Marie walked over to me I knew I was in good hands to get my makeup done for a wedding. I worked in the beauty business for a while and have had my makeup done many times so I know what I like. Kristina asked me what I was looking for, went and selected products, tried some things out, checked in with me and all was great. She went against my wish of totally matte because she thought it would be totally flat and she was absolutely right. I'm so glad she listened to my direction in certain ways but acted as the expert in that she provided me with a great makeover, majorly educated me and got me out of my comfort zone of matte shadows. The most helpful staff you can find. I went in looking for a PTR product, and they knew so much about the entire skin care line and helped me find the best combination of products. They also weren't trying to "sell" me on spending more than I needed to. They honestly laid out the pros and cons and I was so happy with my purchase! As I was browsing, 3 different people helped me out and they were super cool and informative. I've honestly never experienced such great customer service. Thanks team! I love Sephora but this location in particular service as just awful ! I will say I was greeted by a huge smile by a beautiful transgendered woman. But.... I went in for a face wash and when I asked if there was anymore I felt as though I was interrupting the two sales women in their conversation. I was told they didn't have anymore and then she just walked away. She didn't offer to order, didn't even offer to check if another location had it in stock. I would have been willing to travel hence me walking in the store. I don't like to shop online because I still believe in brick and Mortar shops. The real reason why I am also writing this review is because when my mom was at the door trying a bronzer on the sales woman walked over to see if my mom was trying to steal. Instead of offering help she chose to stare at my moms bag and tilt her head to look inside as well as if I did not notice. I was extremely offended and appalled by the service. Real customer service would have been to offer it especially if you though we were stealing!!!! Disgusting ! I wish I would have looked at name tags because I would have called the corporate offices. I will never go back to this location and I honestly will now bring my business to ULTA. read more
