*Yay* for renovations!! This store was seriously lacking a few months ago... but since the makeover its looking pretty fabulous. The best part is that there is actually room to roam around! Gals (and guys too!) - prepare yourself - the store has a totally different layout. Remember where the makeup used to be (17th St. entrance) well that's now fragrance. Oh and the skin/hair care section (that used to be off Park Ave S) is now the makeup. The nail polish area has totally expanded and there are now step-by-step directions displayed on ipads, so you can get ideas or follow along right there. Such a drastic change from the old store but it was definitely needed and, for someone who spends a good amount of time in Union Square, so appreciated. *Yay* (again) for renovations! read more

Seriously love this Sephora and the lovely employees who some how talk me into buying all the make up that I know I do not need. I end up here probably 2x's a month after working in the area, before a movie, or just cause I can't help myself. From make-up to facial cleansers to my rusted rose lip gloss they have it all. This location always has what I want when I go so that makes it great. Hopefully anyone who comes to Sephora has an insider beauty card. The perks that come with it are great. The employees are good with reminding you of samples and free things you can get with the card. Don't be surprised when you find yourself at the location more than you want to be :-) read more

I only go to this location at times because it's on my way home or I specifically need to try something that other locations may not carry (Giorgio Armani makeup, SK II, Koh Gen Do to name a few). Giving three stars because I asked for a foundation match and asked a sample. Lo and behold next day I before going to work try it on and I'm super pale! Makeup is supposed to enhance, not make you look like you spent the night in a hospital or something. Tried getting a diff rep for Armani foundation but ended up getting the same lady for match sample. Uggggghhhhh. Someone else mentioned a rep by the name of Angel, look or ask for him! He's super nice and will get you the samples and suggestions you want when you ask for it. Also will honestly tell you what brands/products are better for your skin type. A good standout from others. Also at this location: full wall of hair products and a great nail station to get your quick fix. Despite the vast variety of brand availability, still giving 3 stars for the horrible match and lack of help in general when u need to flag someone down. read more

iI have been a SEPHORA customer for over 10 yrs. Since the beginning I decided not to redeem my points but instead to save as many points as possible. This was the main incentive for being a customer at several Sephora locations. Almost every time I shopped at Sephora I would spend $100-$300. I love how well stocked and how many products there were to choose from. The staff was always friendly and helpful. I recently went into a Sephora and was told that all my points were wiped out! I was instructed to call the 1-800 customer service number, I was told there was nothing they could do. I WILL NEVER SHOP AT SEPHORA AGAIN! and I will continue to tell anyone and everyone I know to do the same! I was always told (and I always asked) that my points will never expire. I loved that policy. I was never informed about this change in policy and I feel now that Sephora is a terrible business who misinforms and cheats their customers. its such a shame. read more

This is probably one of my favorite Sephora locations in the city (other than the Meatpacking one) because it's pretty big and doesn't get TOO crowded. I like how the store is organized, with the hair products in the back, skincare, and then the makeup in the main area. Two stars because this location is incredibly large, well stocked and generally cleaner (when there isn't a sale) than many of the Sephoras in NYC. Can't speak for the testers as I've given up on that many years ago. Many online only available items are here. If you are someone with lowered expectations who does not want to be pestered by a sales associate, then this is your Sephora. Checking out is efficient as there are additional credit card registers which expedite the whole process. Docked three stars because the staff could care less you were there. There's this protruding stank I can't quite identify just yet but I assure you it's been fermenting over the past couple years. It's gotten to the point I don't bother asking for anything. I get my shit and GTFO. The sales associates used to be attentive, cheery, knowledgeable and most importantly approachable no matter what you look like. Now they passively wander the aisles, making sure you don't steal. Some will even glare at you with dead fish eyes while ignoring your pleas for assistance. Lately, the vibes range from borderline judgy to downright trashy-rude. It feels like you're shopping in a MAC store with conceited associates. Today, I came in and was completely ignored in the skincare section and it wasn't busy. There was one associate who saw me, ignored me, and went straight to help someone who didn't even ask her for her help. She had to get by me in order to make that happen. She came right back around and walked right past me so YUP I was ignored. It almost feels like you gotta be dressed to the gods with a beat face to get anyone to help. DO NOT get your makeup done here. The staff is SO RUDE AND UNPROFESSIONAL. The makeup artist started 20 minutes late and was extremely unprofessional. She came up to make and said she was "wrecked" and didn't even really apologize for starting so late. Then she asked me if I wanted fake lashes and I said sure. At checkout they proceed to ask me to pay $17 for the lashes, to which I replied no one ever told me they were not included !!! The sales associate checking me out was beyond RUDE and suggested they rip them off my eyes.... so now at this point I am late for a dinner having the lady rio off my eyelashes and the mascara job she did was rushed and so bad I needed to re do it myself This store is a joke and I wouldn't suggest to anyone to get their makeup done. I visited the Sephora at union square and had to yelp the experience. From when I walked in checking out the fenti line, an associate offered to assist me if I needed. She made her presence known and wasn't pushy. Saying she was right around the corner if I had any questions. Although she startled me , she greeted me with a friendly smile. When I was ready to check out the line was fairly long but moved quickly. The cashier named Jodiee answered questions I had about the products I purchased , in a professional, personable, and engaging manner. She showed her knowledge of the products. Because it was my first time asking for a sample, I was a bit unsure of where to go. I asked one employee about where I can get a sample. She was a little busy but she had a nasty tone towards me. She said, "Do I look open!?" This was embarrassing and not only disrespectful. She could've said "I'm a little busy right now. Can you ask someone else?" It could've been THAT SIMPLE. I LOVE Sephora. And by love, I mean so obsessively that I'm a VIB Rouge member. Yes, one of those insane individuals who has spent over $1000+ in a calendar year. My shame is setting in. Sephora Union Square is possibly the holy grail of Sephora stores, especially after their most recent renovation a year ago. I work a block from their flagship on 5th ave, and STILL choose to frequent this location due to its sheer collection alone. Armani? They have it. Online only exclusives? They have it here too. But all good things come at a price. The employees at this location are frequently some of the least knowledgeable, unfriendly, and judgmental I have ever come across. Granted, there are always exceptions. The employees at the front of the store have always been cheerful. But as a whole, Sephora Union Square lacks the world of wonder created by employees I have seen at other locations. For example, if you want a sample of makeup, you have to (almost) beg. The employees look at you like you're crazy for asking, and then judge you the entire time they're putting the sample together. Listen, I get it. Nobody wants to spend their time pumping lotion into a tiny container. But it's your job. The employees here are also so rude that they like to treat you as if you're stupid. I once came in here and asked a staff member for help finding an eye makeup remover. I explained to her that I have super sensitive eyes due to my multiple eye surgeries, and the formulation has to be extremely gentle. She pointed me towards Lancome Bi-facil. This was the conversation: Me: I can't use that. I've tried the samples, and it leaves my eyes irritated. Her: Are you sure you're using it correctly? Me: Yes, I know how to remove makeup. Her: You know you put it on a pad, hold it to your eye, and press down for a few minutes before swiping right? Don't just take it and rub it all over. Me: Yes, I know how to properly remove makeup. Her: (Rolls eyes) Hm, well I don't know what to tell you then. Really? After you act like I'm stupid in an extremely pretentious manner, you move forward by not helping me? I was under the impression that you had sales targets to meet. This past weekend, I tried to return an un-opened bottle of nail polish (still in its box), and a lipstick (used once- liked in store and didn't like the color outside.) I've never had any trouble returning things for store credit without a receipt. This was a different story. The cashier who was EXTREMELY rude eyed me up and down, then asked me a million questions about why I was returning the items. She then asked for my beauty insider card and began searching through my purchases to find the items. Really? I spend over $1000 a year at Sephora, and you really think that I'm trying to pull the wool over your eyes? Come on! In all my years shopping at Sephora, this has never happened. When everything checked out, she even called her manager over before she would process my return. Not only was this experience utterly embarrassing, but it has completely turned me off of this location. Droool... Some women go gaga over shoes, others do cartwheels for the bling, and some do flip-flops over purses. My fetish is beauty products. I love, love, love them for making me feel pretty. And Sephora is my Taj Mahal. Sephora stocks all my favorites -- Philosophy Hope in a Jar, Bare Escentials minerals, the Murad skin care line, Du Wop Lip venom, Nars Blush -- to name a few -- along with two crushes, Kat Von D Liquid Eyeliner and Benetint. While the quality and product selection is consistent across the chain, not all Sephoras are created equal in terms of customer service. The Flatiron location seems to be staffed with great people who are friendly and helpful without being overbearing. The only downside is that I could easily drop hundreds of dollars here. However, Sephora also carries its own line, which is very affordable. read more

They have upped their game and I continued to empty my wallet in exchange of tiny little precious pans, jars and bottles. It is rare nowadays to run into a SA/MUA that has an attitude, and I no longer get treated like second class citizen when I stop by to browse without wearing makeup. Their perfume department is exceptional in the way that the SA are always super friendly, let you browse around and aren't too pushy (I do sometimes suspect they are told to push for certain brands) and good in providing you a sample. The importance of a perfume/cologne sample: the temperature, humidity in the air and your own skin affects the scents. What smells great on the paper isn't always what you get once the molecules interacts with your body chemistry, for better or worse. The SA here are helpful and understanding hence I'm glad to make my purchases here. Definitely check out their store brand products. Generally underrated, try: pencil sharpener, makeup brushes, eyeliner pencils and liquid lipsticks. read more

Lots of people are going to think this is a stupid idea, but I think they should create a mall for people who hate to shop but who sometimes need to. At this mall they would not play Bob Marley remixes and people who spray perfume in your face while smiling would be banned. Sephora would not be a store at this mall. The first time I went to Sephora I was much younger and more naive than I am now (I don't cry in public as often these days). I also was living in Vermont at the time but was in the city for an event for which it seemed maybe I should buy some makeup. I should have known this was not going to be the place for me when I saw that the guy helping me had about 4 hairs on each eyebrow (this was not a physical disability but apparently an aesthetic choice). But I was pressed for time. I told him I don't ever wear makeup and just wanted a little lipstick and a little eye stuff; ten minutes of closed eyes later (and that's a long time when your eyelids are getting pressed and pulled and brushed), I emerged as a freak. A moment later the freak was crying and asking for all four layers of makeup to be removed, immediately. I arrived at the event later that evening a little streaky from makeup/tears; on the other hand, I did buy this amazing lipstick the color of which I have never found since (the one I bought was discontinued), which I still scrape the dregs of from time to time. To get to my point: this past weekend, wizened and more prepared than during my first disastrous visit to Sephora, I visited the store on Union Square. It's fine. Everyone's right: it's clean and cool and it makes you want to wash your face and scrub your feet and take better care of your cuticles. It's also crowded and loud and too bright and reflective. Just walking around the place makes you feel like a polluted pore. I was helped by a lady with pretty bad skin and much worse makeup who laughed in my face when I told her I almost never wear makeup ("Do you take the subway too???") and was personally offended when I admitted I sometimes (daily) wash my face with Irish Spring. To be fair, she did find some nice colors for my face and did not try to convince me that eyeshadow necessarily consists of several layers of glitter. The Sephora chain includes more than 750 stores in 17 countries. I used to shop at Sephora in NJ and then on the upper East side. The upper East side store closed. The Union Square store is my favorite. It is spacious and they have the best customer service. They help me to find specifically what I am looking for. I used to go on line, do tons of research and then just ask for the product. I don't have time to sit on line so long any more so I describe to them what I want and they pick it out for me. I used to be a Sephora newbie. I mean the only men that really comes here either works here already, are coming with their significant other, or just mistaken Sephora for a flower shop. I am none of these people. I am however someone that NEEDS to take care of their face because of the industry I work in. It also helps that they have a men's cologne section because let's face it, no man is going to stare at facial products all day. Well...except me apparently. I came in for a toner and the price point was pretty expensive. However, Sephora does have a GREAT return policy as long as you have at least 60 percent of the said product still kept in the bottle AND you have your receipt. This is just in case the facial product has some sort of adverse reaction which sometimes people have. They have already opened bottles of facial products and perfumes/cologne tester bottles which is ALWAYS GREAT. I've noted a few potential cologne purchases in the near future because they made it easier for me to just pick and try the cologne without having to ask someone to bring me a sample. Here's frowning at you Macy's. SMH. The store is clean and neat. Customer service was friendly and the minute I stepped into a section I was asked if I needed help. I love attentive service. I really do. The location is also great and convenient due to proximity to subways and buses. I am definitely a FAN of Sephora. Now, if I only learned how to pick up women at make-up stores...that would really be great. read more

This is my favorite NYC Sephora. As a beauty junkie (currently toting 5 lip glosses, because you never KNOW when you need to be peachy keen, barely there or perfect plum!), I've got a number of products from here, department stores and drugstores alike. Cons: *Even though this location is less crowded than the always packed Broadway spot or tiny Time Warner outpost, it can still get a little bumpin'. Mostly people are nice, just be careful not to get shoved around when you're holding one of the pricey glass perfume bottles. *Sales staff is a mixed bag in terms of knowledge / professionalism. I've had the good, the bad and the ugly, but I never know which I'll get until I walk in that day. *Prices: Ok, this has never stopped me from splurging occasionally on redness reducers or eyebrow correctors, but getting your glam on here isn't cheap -- unless you stick with the Sephora line of products, which isn't bad for certain things. Pros: *Like Henri Bendel, I think Sephora is a kid stepping into a candy shop kinda feeling for me. Long lasting mascara, glowing bronzer and lip galore...so fun! I love to waste time (and of course money) to drop in and see what's in store. *On the flip side of my earlier point, some members of the staff have been very helpful with all my questions, and I had one fabulous guy who did such a great job doing my makeup there (they do this for free but of course expect you to buy a few things). I like this better than dept. stores because they'll pick many brands, but I also had an experience where a young girl went way overboard with Urban Decay glitter on my eyelids, leaving me to look like a cross between Avril Lavigne and Morticia Adams....eww. Sticking to weekday shopping is always a good tip in these kinds of tourist traps. I was on a quest. The perfect red! It's a tall order. Not too deep, not too vampy, not too blue, not too orange. I dragged a friend as an unbiased 2nd opinion and endeavored to try on several. My lips were starting to take on a life of their own with the application and removal of different candidates. It was not going well. Enter my girl Shantavia. She appeared in the Sephora signature black outfit, wearing an exquisite symphony of plum and purple on her lips that I couldn't pull off in any lifetime. In a reassuring, rational voice she said "I like that on you, but let me show you something else." Twenty seconds later she returned with a tube in her hand. "Try this." She cleaned off my lips and presented me with the new contender. I gasped when I looked at myself. It was perfect. Sephora lipstain red #01. My new signature color. I have to agree with some of the other reviews and say this place has some of the best sales associates. I went in looking for a specific brand of foundation that is cruelty-free. The associate tried a few colors, but also made recommendations for other brands (non cruelty-free) that may also match my skin. Sad thing is I have light brown skin with yellow undertones and most of the deep foundations are made with red undertones, even the neutral ones! The associate sent me home with the some samples to try. She also informed me my skin was dry and to try mixing my moisturizer and foundation - pretty good tip. read more

Oh Sephora, why do I lose my mind when I walk in your store? I usually by make up from sephora.com because I can get a better deal. They always have a sale section and at checkout I can choose 3 samples. I am their VIB member an often get email from them with the code for some free products that is valid only online. And it's easier to see which products I can get for using my points. Once in a while I have to go to Sephora to try something new before I purchase it. And I always come here. This is by far my favorite Sephora location. I usually don't need any help, like to look for everything by myself. But one time I needed help so I ask one of the employees. I wish I remember her name because she was amazing. Very helpful and also gave me some testers. One time I bought Make up For Ever foundation. When I came home and opened it up... and there it was, a disaster.. The cover was broken and foundation was all over! I freaked out, bye bye 45$! Few days after I went back to the store, explained what happened and they exchanged it with no problem. They were apologizing! I came in looking for an alternative to a product I'd been using at least 12 years. I received a very informative and patient consultation that turned in to a full makeover with Sales Rep. Lazaro. He explained not just what he recommended and why. He didn't try to over sell me but made me want to buy the things he demonstrated. I came for foundation and came out with 5 new products, happily spending a lot more than I initially intended. I usually don't right reviews or take time to fill out surveys but Lazaro made my experience exceptional and converted me to this store, which I tended to avoid. He went above and beyond and lifted my mood and outlook and I believe he needs recognition. read more

This place is consistent (I finally learned my lesson) -- the salespeople are way too busy -- talking to each other! Don't waste your time. I got there about 30 minutes after they opened (my last visit for sure) -- there were maybe three customers and what looked like three times as many employees -- only one customer being helped. I finally found the product I wanted - wrong color -- when I approached two ladies who were looking very busy talking -- they said they had nothing else. Too busy to stop chatting, I guess. I am a VIB Rouge and so I know enough about Sephora service etc. I love my Sephora beautician in San Diego. I was in this store yesterday because I was visiting NYC and needed a brow pencil and a couple of other items. First, no one was available to help. Next, one person deigned to help but she acted like she didn't even want to sell anything to me I was so disgusted with the service that I left without buying anything. Maybe it was just this one person (she said she was the manager and I should be grateful that she was willing to help (sell)) or it is the whole store. I would have liked to have picked up a few more items if only there were pleasant. read more

For selection, this store should get 4-5 stars. Unfortunately, getting help from staff has been very hit or miss and after today's frustration I had to write a review. I went to Sephora mid-afternoon on a Sunday looking to replace my Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer with something with a bit more coverage. The store was busy but not super crowded and there was plenty of staff standing around. Not once did anyone ask me if I needed help. In fact, on several occasions, a staff member walked directly past me and asked someone else if she needed help. Now, I purposely wore no makeup but some eyeliner, since I knew I was going to be trying out foundations, but I was otherwise dressed nicely and have been in before with full makeup and still had trouble getting help. So, either the staff here doesn't want to do their job, or (more likely in my opinion), they ignore certain customers who don't meet their arbitrary standards. read more

An Orgy of Make-Up Sephora is THE sprawling make-up mecca for beauty cultists and make-up addicts. Why should you, the average woman, go to Sephora? Look, I'm the biggest recessionista/bargainista there is, but try finding an eyeliner (that everyday essential) in a drugstore that does not smudge, leaving you with "panda eyes" or a line way up by your brow. Try finding a red lipstick that doesn't look awful... details like these matter. There are 1,000,000s of shades of red when you think about it. And more expensive make-up lines actually spend time researching the perfect shade that looks good on every skin tone (I prefer Chanel lipsticks for red, but Sephora has plenty of other cool brands like MAC and NARS that you could try). Bottomline- some make-up items you can get away with getting at the drugstore- some you can't. Many would not expect Sephora to have an entire department devoted to all-natural and organic make-up and aromatherapy and skin treatments, but they do. Ole Henricksen is a particularly effective (and expensive!) European brand. Sephora has their own "Naturally Gorgeous" house brand too. In fact, Sephora offers many European and international beauty products you just wouldn't find anywhere else. Their Tools and Accessories department is outstanding! Where else could you find an Airbrush (spray-on) make-up system? I myself can personally recommend the Tanda (light therapy) anti-aging/anti-acne system- after even one use, your skin tone will appear more even, less red, radiant and glowing. It is not a gimmick! In fact, light therapy wands were the only thing that were able to clear up my very severe Acne that I had over the years. Don't forget girls, the famous saying is that "90% of Being a Woman is Smoke and Mirrors (an illusion)". For women who don't wear make-up- I used to be one of you... and let me tell you a little bit of lipstick (or lipgloss) and eyeliner goes a LONG way in this world in terms of attracting guys. That's all you really need. And guys, this may all seem above your heads, but maybe Sephora would be a good place for you to go meet girls if you're having trouble doing so elsewhere! You could always pick up some cologne in their Men's department while you're at it. read more

Sephora Union Square is the mother of all Sephora's; it has everything, and I really do mean everything. It even has products that are "only available online." Today I purchased the Make Up For Ever Aqua Cream in #14, a shade no other Sephora carried (I know this because I actually went to the Midtown East Sephora first, only to discover they didn't have it.) The staff is awesome. Every staff member I've spoken with/asked for help/cashed me out has been lovely and helpful. The only downside to this location is that it's nearly impossible to speak to a Sales Associate via phone. I once was on hold for over six minutes while she checked if the product I wanted was in stock. I won't deduct a star for this, though, because they're (the staff) are always visibly busy when I come in and I can understand being pulled in every direction. read more

Sorry, I love this place - particularly as the FAA doesn't allow me to fly with more than 3oz of liquids. One of the best Sephoras in the city. I never have to look far for a sales' associate's help. This place is always well stocked too. They also offer free makeup classes to teach you how to master the smoky eye, false lashes, or a simple day look. The classes are taught by great instructors who are knowledgable about products and offer great recommendation. My only gripe is that the lighting in this Sephora is darker than usual, making it harder to match foundations and other products. What looks good in the dark doesn't always look good in the light, as I've learned the hard way. read more

Really professional staff within the cramped paths. The staff is always attentive and ready to answer questions - much appreciated; got some samples plus cologne with the help The products are well displayed and spaced out for customers. The paths aren't walkable at certain times because of so many customers. It's really difficult to go about and shop if you carry any items with you during these peak rushes. Overall, positive experience here - easily accessible and tolerable spacing without the high foot traffic. read more

Your employee Manny was so sweet, kind, patient and amazing with my developmentally disabled sister in law. She was excited to finally get to Sephora (she's really into make-up) and once she arrived, she was overwhelmed and a little scared. Lovely, helpful, friendliest staff I've met in a WHILE! Chelsea in the fragrance department was amazing! Truly over and above helping me pick the perfect scent and candle for date night!! She was really kind and fun and answered all of my questions and was very patient.
