Hi - I've been going to this spot since it opened. I've lived one block away on the street for 14 years and remember September Wines under both the initial and second ownership. The current staff is incredibly rude, mean and has a chip on their shoulder. I'm specifically speaking about the woman that works there (yesterday afternoon). She was not only intentionally rude to me but also to others in the store. For example, the customers after me very kindly asked if she knew where there might be a bathroom in the neighborhood. This is after she chastized me and told me she had lived in the neighborhood for years. She told them "it's not my job to have a list of all the bathrooms in the LES." She could very easily have said, "no, I"m sorry, I don't." This comment tracked how she treated me as well. Also, not that it should matter, but I am a visibily handicapped person with a cane as well, so, ..no one is really off limits (and i was also equally polite to her). I'm guessing there is now a third new owner. My advice is to tighten up hiring. If it's not a new owner...my advice is that there should be. I can see my review mirrors the other recent comments by customers too. I have always tolerated the higher prices of this store due to the collection and the past staff's friendliness. This is no longer the case and unfortunately for new management there is PLENTY of competition. I will not be returning. read more

Pardon the essay but I'm disappointed. This has been my neighborhood spot for YEARS. Post-pandemic the energy changed and the staff members are often clearly intoxicated and/or rude. I had an aggressive experience with one of the men working there and it made me uncomfortable. Because I've been loyal, I waited to share my experience in person instead of reviewing online. The gentleman I spoke to couldn't have cared less. I decided to start going a couple blocks to another shop to avoid going into September. I decided to pop in tonight as it's raining and the same individual who I had the had experience with was once again drunk. While ringing me up, he got into my personal space and tried to take my water bottle out of my hand as to charge me for it. This man is a liability. I'm done with this place. read more

I've gone to this wine shop over 20 times and almost every time has been uneventful or pleasant. I've been helped by multiple people during these visits and they've almost always been nice and accommodating, sharing great recommendations tailored to what I was looking for on each occasion. Today, I was looking at a particular wine in the under $20 section and asked one of the workers if it was a natural wine, a question I have asked many times to various individuals at this store, including this worker, with no issue. Instead of answering my question, he said it depended on my definition of natural wine. I mentioned sulfites, after which he proceeded to explain to me multiple times that everything I eat has sulfites in it and that French fries have more sulfite that any wine. When I tried to rephrase the question, he said that every wine in the store could be considered natural. I asked about the section of the store marked "Natural" and if the wine I was holding could be placed in that section, but he still didn't seem to understand what I was asking and looked like he was starting to get exasperated with me. Although I am not very knowledgeable about wines and recognize there are conflicting definitions in the wine community as to what constitutes a wine as "natural," most of the natural wine I have had from this store have been wines with no or limited added sulfites. And this was what I was hoping he could help me find since I just wanted to pick a natural wine under $20 and be on my way. At a certain point, another customer who had just been helped even commented on how the worker was being unnecessarily difficult. I left the store and went to Gary's around the corner and I was in and out of there with the two natural wines he recommended in under three minutes. I gave this review two stars rather than one because I've had numerous other visits to this store that have been completely fine. I'm not quite sure why this worker felt the need to give me a lecture on the definition of natural wine today, but this experience has made me hesitant to come back, especially if a simple question about whether a wine is a "natural wine" is met with pedantry. Otherwise, this shop is pretty great. They will usually have a bottle of many of the wines already chilled, which is convenient. They just ask that you bring a bottle of the wine you want from the shelf to the counter so they can replace the chilled bottle you're taking home. They have a nice selection of different wines and spirits and many of the workers provide great recommendations. They also have vendors come in from time to time to give out free samples and other deals. read more

Ignored at cash register for 5 minutes - opinionated staff - asked if we wanted a bag - asked what it cost - 50 cents - berated for asking why a bag cost 50 cents -was told it's to save the environment and plastic bags are ruining the environment- asked where I was from - and told me my state (California) was ruining the environment because it sells plastic bags for 10cents. Like I make the rules??? Weird - who berates customers when they spend over $100 at their store. read more

I rarely dish a 3-star review, ESPECIALLY during a pandemic, but this place is just mind-boggling. The people that work here really have that "don't ask me any stupid questions, actually don't ask me any questions because i'm busy standing here doing nothing, and if I answer expect a rude mumbled short response, and if you can't understand me that's just too bad" vibe. lol. The wine selection seems good. So if you know what you want, you're fine. I do appreciate that you need a mask to enter this business. I'm seeing reviews posted about good service and that is decidedly not my experience from the aggro, boarderline-hostile bearded cashier who reminded me that they were CLOSING IN THREE MINUTES. Meanwhile, I had called my order in ahead of time, acknowledged the 9p closing time, and confirmed that I would be there to pay and pick up my $50. of wine. I will never shop here again. I know for certain I can not speak to my clients or anyone for that matter, the way this jerk spoke to me, I won't be back. September Wines does not deserve my business or yours. September has become "ghetto". It's weird to walk into a store with a security buzzer for entry on Lower East Side; not very welcoming staff members. I used to love this place and would come several times a week for a bottle of wine. Over the last 6-8 months I've left super frustrated on many occasions. The payment machine is always broken and nobody seems to know how to work it, but mainly upset with the people they have working there. They are rude and pretentious. I went in recently and asked for organic wine and was met with some pretentious response about how organic wine doesn't exist. Just overall really rude staff who I've also seen be very rude to people asking for job applications. I always have tried to act friendly and conversational since I'm in there so much but every time they are pretty cold. After about the 10th time this happened I decided to write a review. This is SUCH a bummer. I have loved September for over 10 years and was so excited to be back in the neighborhood to visit/order more often. I learned so much from them over the years. But, the last few months have been bad experience after bad experience, which I didn't even know was possible from a wine store! It really makes me sad but, today was my last order. Came in and went straight to front to ask if they carried Screwball - the response was a "HAHHH NO! ... we actually got the xxx(insert name I didn't hear) another flavored whiskey that was ALSO JUST awful". September is by far the best neighborhood wines and spirt store. Well curated collection of wines and spirits. Not the usual selection of the wines that most liquor stores carry. Friendly staff. Well maintain store and made me feel very safe during covid there store followed very close all the protocols that were require and gave great service. The staff here are super knowledgeable and really sweet. I've stopped by September after work more times than I can count now and have never left not excited about the bottle I just purchased. They have a great selection of natural reds, whites, regions labeled, rose and even spirits behind the counter. The staff greet you immediately upon walking in and ask if you need help with anything. Let's be frank: after I pay the rent on my shoebox apartment and then write out checks for bills and fritter the rest of my money away on shopping and eating out and meeting friends for drinks and taking the less-occasional-than-I-care-to-admit taxi, I just don't have much left over to be picky when it comes to the wine I take to a dinner party or drink while entertaining guests at home. I told the guy I didn't have a lot of money to blow, so he recommended a few bottles under $15 for me and took care to describe the flavors and textures. I felt like he knew what he was talking about, and if I said I didn't care for something, he graciously and expertly recommended something else he felt to be a better fit. So... Friendly, efficient service in a refined space makes September Wine a gem of a neighborhood wine store. I liked the bottle they recommended fine enough and it was everything they said it would be. And if you're heading over to A Casa Fox a block away for their BYOB dinner, this is a convenient stop both for that magnum bottle of cheap-ish white (you really won't find 2 buck chuck or boxed wine here) or that finer yet still reasonably priced bottle of fine red. They had a small refrigerated selection and quite a few bottles in the $15 price range. They seemed to have a tasting going on the night we stopped by. Though I don't live in LES, I would consider moving to have September Wines as my local libations purveyor! These guys rock. Have been here a couple times now, for slightly different occasions (and drinks each times), so I can safely say there's really something for everyone. Unlike many (snobby) New York City wine establishments, the girls and guys here don't turn up their noses if you're feelin' cheap. In fact, the staff members go out of their way to cater to your needs and price range. I really hate writing negative reviews, but this experience was downright shocking. We were looking for a quick wine pickup for a BYOB restaurant nearby and decided to go for the highly-reviewed September Wines. All the Yelp reviews said they were non-pretenious and helpful, so we thought it'd be a no-brainer to pick up wine there. We were wrong. We walked in with a smile and a hello and were greeted by the most snobbish look from the big-eyed blonde girl (lack of any other description) behind the counter. No acknowledgement of our presence -- just a vacant side stare and then off to "help"... I mean chat with some couple. Of course she might have been busy, but she was standing there looking at us with a sideways glance. I turned to her several times to ask for help; in the second that I looked in her direction, she literally turned the opposite way. Maybe it was the day, maybe it was the employee, but that night showed me the exact opposite of the reviews here today, and I unfortunately can't bring myself to give them more than a 1 or review them on any other merits. read more

I feel like if you're not an avid Yelp reviewer, there's always a distinctive experience (for better or worse) that prompts you to write something about an establishment. For me, it was last night. I walked into September for the first time on my commute home and decided to pick up a few bottles of wine with my roommate. One of the employees was super nice and attentive gave us recommendations that we ended up following. He seemed knowledgable and I tend to trust my local wine-os, so... away we went. Unfortunately, when we arrived home and cracked open the bottle of red, it was incredibly unpleasant. I'm not sure if the wine had gone bad or if it was simply my taste buds, but it tasted like... dirty socks? So gross. I was tempted to not say anything, but considering it was about a $25 bottle, I decided to call up the store and let them know what happened. Michael (the employee who helped us) remembered me and was super apologetic. He asked if I was still around the area or lived close by and - without me prompting - offered to have a replacement bottle delivered to my apartment. I was totally taken aback. Who does that?? Within 15 minutes a delicious bottle of Spanish wine was at my front door. Talk about service! One of those moments that made me appreciate NYC, its efficiency and good people in the world. Although beautiful in decor and with a great name... My birthday month... None of my favorite Prosecco wines such as La Marca, Mionetto, Cupcake brands were available and had to settle for a drier and bitter Prosecco which I don't even remember the name. Also didn't feel the most welcome with my crew... Hate to make it a color thing but we were all Latinos and I didn't feel the staff was happy to have our service. The staff is really knowledgeable and friendly, they really go out of their way to help you pick the perfect wine to pair with any meal or to enjoy alone. While I prefer the vast selection of Astor Wines, September doesn't do a bad job either. The selection is good with some odd picks too - today I picked up a bottle of Magdalener from Alto Adige, the German-speaking region of Italy near the Austrian border. It's not a common wine even in Italy, and the guy that helped me had a lot to say about it when I asked him. They do carry some very pricey wines (some over $100) but that doesn't mean that you can't find a nice variety of wines in the $8-15 range. I spotted many a bottle with this price from all the regions of the world. I've been to De Vino on Clinton St. as well and I'd have to rate September more highly in the LES-wine-shop category. De Vino is more like a humiliating search for anything that's not a complete rip-off, if you're like me and you want something of reasonable quality at a reasonable price. I usually do a "quick judgement" of a new wine store based upon their Champagne selection. It's usually a good indicator of the rest of the store regarding price/quality/selection and knowledge of the staff. I swung into September wines and found three different small producer (RM) champagnes I had never heard of before. (...and I thought I knew all the important ones) so when I was asked if I had any questions, I fired away. This guy (owner or stellar employee?) knew the varietal mix, the cellar master, had visited one of the producers, and described in non-pretentious wine speak the style and drinkability of each. I bought his recommendation, and not surprisingly his description was right on. Bravo. I always advise people: "If you don't know wine, know your wine merchant", and I can definitely recommend September Wines. read more

If I worked or lived closer to September W&S, I'd go there for my everyday wine buys. It's a great, smallish store filled with great buys from around the world. Last time, i bought a terrific Chilean Gewurztraminer to take to a byob restaurant nearby. Who knew Chile made gewurztraminers? I didn't until I popped in here (actually I found it on their web site earlier). They have a refrigerator for chilled wines which is quite handy for the byob restaurants on the l.e.s. There could be more bottles under $10 as it's the l.e.s and though there are expensive restaurants now, there are plenty of "starving artists" who could use a bargain. read more
