Right by the water in Greenpoint Brooklyn so it's a bit further walk from the subway. Despite this, Hana is popular and can be challenging to get seats especially on a Friday night. Reservations are highly recommended. Only open for 3 days, so Saturdays and Sundays, best to enjoy the daytime peaceful speakeasy aesthetic vibes. Daytime vibes here is peaceful and volume level is for soft spoken customers. Night vibes is when I've tried is more relaxed, decent sound level pop music and more lax after a long work day. The bartenders were very great attending to mine and my Brooklyn loyal local on what to try. Based on our tastes, they recommended a good hard Makgeolli brew or with a cloudy dessert Makgeolli drink. Pub food portions are giant with variations of scallion pancakes, bulgogi bites and Mac and cheese fried tenders. Would get the Makgeolli flights after a non-busy work night. I was so excited to try this place because it's been years since I've had good Makgeolli outside of South Korea. However, I was disappointed because as the waitress explained, they have a modern twist on the drinks and it's also on the drier side. This is a neighborhood treasure! If you find yourself in Greenpoint, I wouldn't miss it. It's tucked away between some warehouses but worth the trip there! Alice, the founder, is the nicest. I don't think I've been to a makgeolli bar before, so this was a fun and unique experience! We enjoyed the flight tastings, and I loved the sweeter cocktail called Sujeonggwa. The pajeon (vegetable pancake) is darker and crispier than expected, but was good bar food paired with the drinks. Is this place considered Brooklyn even though I, who originally started from Brooklyn, have to take the train to Manhattan and then take the 7 train (typically a Queens train) to get here? We had to walk on the Pulaski Bridge too (which is a pretty sight at night). For my fellow directionally challenged friends, I highly recommend using Apple Maps so they give you a step-by-step walking guide to when you're supposed to get off the bridge Besides the walking adventure, this is a pretty quaint place in a very quiet neighborhood. It's a little hard to find the place b/c it seems like it's in the middle of nowhere, but once you go in it's such a good vibe! Very friendly staff and the tables were spacious enough for us to have good space and enjoy everything. We ordered the Tasting Flight and we all agreed that Takju was our favorite. It was the closest to a regular makgeolli. I wasn't a big fan of the Hwaju or the Yakju. I would love to come back and try their cocktails though. The foods are all meant to be shared. The Pa Jeon was definitely worth ordering as it was so savory and crispy, and paired the best with the makgeolli. The Suyuk was also so good, and we wish there was more of it! The Bibim Guksu and Dubu Kimchi were my least favorite. The Dubu Kimchi is COLD, which is a thing to note. I didn't find it really special and felt like it was pretty overpriced for what it was. The Bibim Guksu had a kick to it, but the flavors didn't really blend well. Great ambience in a beautiful space. I came here with 3 other friends and we all had a great time. I came here super hungry and the food was great. A friend and I shared the pa jeong (scallion and chive pancake) and the gaji namul (steamed eggplant). The food came out fast and the pa jeon was so crispy. It came with a really nice dipping sauce. The eggplant was melt in your mouth and it came with a nice side of rice. I would consider these more shareables than full meals and I ended up grabbing a slice of pizza later. I made a reservation in advance for 2 people at 5 PM when they opened to be seated at the bar. We arrived a few minutes before our reservation and were able to sit right away. It was fairly empty since we just arrived as they were opening and we made a mini road trip from Maryland to come visit the restaurant which meant we had a few backpacks and bags with us. The waiter was kind enough to help place our bags on the back and was very hospitable. We started with the makgeolli flight which consisted of Takju, Hwaju and Yakju. To be honest, all were delicious and had it's own unique flavor. As a Korean American, I really enjoyed the authentic flavors of the rice wine since I'm used to Hmart store bought ones. The depth of flavors were uniquely fragrant and paired well with the dishes they had. We opted for the Pajeon which was perfect because it was raining (if you know, you know ;)). We also decided to get a full glass of Takju which came warm in a ceramic bowl/cup and one of them was "on the house". Talk about service! I finished with the Sikhye Cocktail (which is originally a non-alcoholic sweet drink, but made of rice). The cocktail itself had alcohol, but it did not conflict with the taste of sikhye and was actually quite refreshing to drink. I bought 4 bottles to take home - it was that good. Found this place somewhere and thought it'd be good to check it out. Interesting set up and think it may be better to do a tour of the process vs just coming for a tasting. Upon arrival, the bar was wide open, so got to choose where I sat. Had three different people who assisted during the time I was there. There must have been a shift change as there was a good 15-20 minutes after being sat, where no one checked in. Once I put in my order for the flight & the Pa Jeon - Scallion and Garlic Chive Pancake it pretty much went no contact. The pancake was good, I preferred the outer part as it was nice and crispy. The flight consisted of Takju, Hwaju & Yakju and they all had a unique flavor. I beleive the tour would have given more insight to how and why they choose to serve at these specific stages of the process. There was a couple that came in after which were regulars who definitely got individual service from offered a specific type of rice wine flight that wasn't on the menu as well as individual food recommendations. This was my first time trying Makgeolli. I tried the tasting flight which included the Takju 16, Hwaju 12 and the Yakju 14. My favorite was the Takju 16, so smooth with a nice sparkle. Inconspicuously tucked away in small street, Hana Makgeolli is a great place to grab a drink and talk with people. I tried the tasting flight and forbidden takju. Out of the tasting flight, my favorite was the hwaju. It was light and slightly fragrant. The yakju was also very good and crisp and clean. The takju was the most alcohol forward for me, which makes sense as it has the most %ABV. The higher the stage, the more tart the soju gets. The forbidden takju had nice notes of black rice, but it just wasn't for me. My friend got the sihkye, and it was amazing. It was so easy to drink. The atmosphere is great. A friend suggested Hana Makgeolli and I was so intrigued by the fact that there is a Makgeolli (Korean fermented rice wine) brewery that I had to give it a try! I was so confused when I stepped out of my Lyft (I don't believe it is easily accessible by public transportation) and wasn't sure if it was the right street. Make reservations on weekends if you're going since they're pretty packed. We got the Hwaju, Miju, and Yakju for drinks. Slightly creamy and more alcoholic in taste than the makgeoli we were used to, which makes sense since we're just used to the bottled ones from Hmart. We got the soondae, which was pretty good. I love dipping most of my food in sauce if another dish has sauce so pretty satisfactory that the soondae is served in dokbeokki sauce. It also has rice cakes and carrots. Rice cake is nice and chewy. The sauce itself tho, is pretty spicy. I only found out after but they serve rice too! Definitely get some rice for the leftover sauce since it's spicy but good. They topped off the dish with perilla leaf and some crunchy seeds similar to chia seed but bigger. It was a nice touch since it added nice aromatic to it and I really appreciate the extra crunchy texture. This is more towards the pricey end with each drink being ~ $14 and the soondae was $25. Side note: you can book something entirely different, a tour at the brewery where they show you around and it comes with the taste flight at the end.
