We stayed at the Hawkins House which had a fabulous location, amazing view, and lovely hot tub. The bed was incredibly comfortable, the toilets worked, but the place was otherwise in a sad state of disrepair. The three-bedroom house was less than $300 per night, so I suppose it was a good value. But the rusty furniture, despicable cabinets, sad art, and poorly hung fixtures were kind of depressing. read more

ATTENTION: This place is AWESOME, and UNDER NEW OWNERSHIP!! I spent a weekend with Serenisea and was able to take advantage of BOTH styles of the wonderful accommodations they offer. There's a property on the bluff with a handful of cabins; I stayed in number 2 my first night. The bed and bedding was awesome; new mattress and additional foam pad on top. The views from the cabin in both rooms look down into the sea cove below. I slept with my window open, and kept my front door open a large part of the time. The kitchen was equipped also. The cabin was very clean and I felt at home. The private hot tub that is on the bluff of this property secluded by a gate and enclosed for privacy IS WORTH THE DRIVE UP OR DOWN THE COAST. Few spots in the world have views such as this and offer such peaceful serenity..... it's open all night. Serenisea also manages privately owned homes in the area as well. I stayed in the "Serenade house" the second night. AMAZING. Updated, totally clean, large, and picture windows in every room. Private hot tub on the deck, and a huge deck and private backyard that are by the redwoods yet under full sun all day. The best thing all around was the customer service. Julie who checked me in and gave me a full tour of Serenisea, and Peggy who assisted with my reservations, could not have been more pleasant and hospitable. I made the 4 1/2 hour drive to Serenisea from Monterey for a long weekend escape. I love this place. Very simple, nothing-fancy cabins on a cul-de-sac overlooking the ocean, each with a fireplace and a share of a beautiful jacuzzi directly above the crashing waves. It's romantic, quiet, pleasant and calming, and I'd spend every weekend there if I could. Worth the drive! read more

We stayed here last year and were very pleased. Came back and they put us in Cabin 2 and immediately we realized it wasn't going to be a good stay. The cabin had a very musty moldy odor. The carpet in the bedroom was filthy and to say it smelled is an understatement . The kitchen had a very tiny dorm fridge that didn't get cold and the inside of the kitchen cabinets were moldy. Outdated and in dire need of renovations. The only redeeming point was the magnificent views. Well... we were searching for a rental for one night for 4 people. We rented the Harbor and the decor was absolutely hideous thrift store quality and once we flushed the toilet it completely smelled like a sewer. I'm not sure which was worse... the smell or the decor. But, they got us another rental nearby which was better by far, but we had to drive back, pick up another key, then drop the key back off in the morning and the interest in customer service was minimal. Then there is the price, plus 11% tax plus extra fees for more than 2 people. We were not at the cabins on the main property so cannot speak of those... BUT, I would never rent from them again. I'd rather stay further away in a hotel that is clean and interested in their customers. AND... what's up. You've got a website, but cannot correspond or reserve via email. Come on!!! read more

The owner of Serenisea is an incompetent moron! First they got our house wrong when we arrived. The "Hawkins House" they tried to give us was not the quality that we paid for. It smelled like it had been closed up since the 1950's and the furniture was that old too. Even the guest book in the house has several entries that mentioned the same issues. Even worse, 6 of the kitchen drawers and counter tops had rat droppings all over. When we went back to the office to tell them of the mistake and the condition, their reaction was "how big were the droppings so we know what size traps to put out?" Really? at $235/night, we refused to stay there with our kids. We found a last minute house with a different company, but Serenisea would not refund our money. Instead, they put us in a nicer house which was closer to the quality that we thought we originally had booked with them. When we checked out, by the way you have to do the cleaning, dishes, and strip the beds as their fine print states, the owner was in the office. He was a real piece of work. He blamed us for all of the issues and booking mistakes. He defended the condition of the original house even after I showed him the rat pictures. Basically he had no interest in the situation and didn't want to hear it. He was bent that his staff put us in the second house and that he was going to charge us more money after our stay because it was a nicer house. That is exactly what he did. 2 weeks later, without our authorization, he continued to bill our credit card for additional charges/fees. I feel sorry for anyone who would use this company when planning a vacation. I really feel sorry for any home owner who lets this guy manage there property. My Husband and I booked the Moonstar Cottage by recommendation. The reservation was made very last minute, we reserved it on a Monday and we checked in on Friday. We aren't newbies to the area, we usually spend a few days at a nearby campground with friends and family for my birthday in September each year. My Husband and I had been searching for somewhere to go with a view, hot tub and near the ocean, this is exactly what we got! The cottage was well kept, very clean and such an amazing place to spend our anniversary. The view is unbelievable and they have everything you should want or need to cook, bathe and relax! I really cannot say enough good things about our stay. The only downside to Serenisea is that reservations cannot be made online, You have to actually pick up the phone and call to reserve your cabin/home of choice. The process to do this was very easy. We called and asked many questions that were answered with patience and knowledge.The young lady (with the adorable dog) was so friendly over the phone and especially in person! We have stayed at Serenisea on several different occasions. In fact, we were married there last year. It is with a heavy heart that I write about how dissatisfied we were. We stayed in Cabin 5, and paid the usual $260 a night. We arrived late in the day, and didn't notice the gnats and flies, until later that night. The shower had duct tape on the showerhead, the sink handle broke off in my hand ( my husband had to fix it), the sheets smelled filthy (the owner took offence when I said the sheets smelled filthy. He was rude and questioned my integrity several times during our conversation). The towels left in the kitchen for us to use had a brown smear on them, the TV didn't work in the bedroom, and the list goes on. The owner had the nerve to ask in a disrespectful tone, why I didn't asked to be moved.... I am 5 1/2 months pregnant, it was raining, I was staying for two nights, and we arrived on our anniversary late in the afternoon (had dinner reservations at St. Orres - which by the way is BEAUTIFUL!). I was not in any mood or condition to be packing up all of our things, moving in the rain, unpacking, and then pack again, to leave the next day. I don't know what was more disturbing. The substandard cabin or the rude and totally inappropriate behavior of the owner. I asked him for a credit of one night (which was met with a terrible and disrespectful tone and manner. If fact, it was like talking to a 5 year old - totally uneducated temper prone spoiled child) . I will never again mention this place to anyone I know. We have referred several people to this once lovely place. I am sad and also embarrassed that I have ever recommended them. Great place for a low key getaway. We shared the 2 bedroom cabin with my wife's sister and her husband in mid September. The deck was literally on the edge of the cliff as was the hot tub. You can't beat sitting in the hot tub with a cup of coffee as the sun is rising. Decor is pretty much from the 70's but we didn't go to sit in the cabin. I'd go back but not sure I could get the wife to agree to Hwy 1 again. read more

My husband and I recently had the pleasure of renting 'The White House'. We highly recommend it! The love and care that the owners have for their 'home away from home' was very obvious from the care and thought they had put into the furnishings. I love to cook and I've never stayed in a vacation home that offered as well equipped a kitchen as the White House. Visit this facility at your risk. These folks run a shoddy operation. Their facility is not maintained in a safe and sound condition. Because of a shower stall unequipped with either grab bars or an anti-skid mat, I fell while showering and sustained multiple rib fractures. Our experience has been made more egregious because of how they have handled it. Upon checking out a day early to seek medical attention and drive home, we were told that authorization would be needed to waive the unused portion of the reservation. The full service charge was levied to our credit card and the merchant has yet to respond to correspondence regarding our circumstance. read more

DO NOT GO HERE!!!!!!! The owner is incredibly unprofessional and STEALS FROM YOU. My fiance and I used to love coming here until we tried to use one of the coupons they mail to you after your stay. It is a stay two nights, get the third night free and has fine print that would mislead ANYONE who read it. When I booked, I had them on speaker phone with my fiance and asked specifically if I would be able to use the coupon and read the dates on the coupon to the person on the phone. They told me that we would be able to use it and it wouldn't be a problem because the specific dates weren't listed. Well we got to the hotel late on the first night and no one was there, we got the keys and went to the house. The next day we went to check in and they would not accept the coupon! When we asked to speak with the owner who lives on site, he refused to come see us, until I was crying because we literally couldn't come up with the money and did not know how we were even going to get home. Keep in mind we also have an 11 month old baby with us! Finally, after the reception INSISTS to the owner that he comes to speak with us, he stomped inside and put his hands on his hips and asked us "WHAT?!". There was NOTHING professional about it and not only that but we could tell right then he was not going to have ANY sympathy for his extremely poor written fine print on the coupon. I had to put my hand out to shake his and introduce myself first, because he obviously wasn't going to do that and didn't even have the decency to shake it back!! After yelling at us and calling us unproficient in English, he then left the building- leaving us there with no one. The receptionist had scurried off once I made it clear it was that person who told me we could use the coupon because I recognized his voice. We left the keys at the office the next day (TWO NIGHTS) and went home thinking they would charge our card and maybe even take off the 3rd night. We did not want to speak with the people working there after the argument the morning before. The day after I got home I get a call from the owner saying he contacted the Sheriff's Office and if my card didn't go through right then he was pressing charges for Defrauding an Innkeeper! I told him I did not have quite all of the money at the moment because I had to be able to get home the day before and pay for gas so I was $30 short, he then told me "I guess I will contact the Sheriff then!" and HUNG UP ON ME! I am seriously at a loss. I feel I could press charges for Theft by false pretenses but I honestly just don't understand how this man can sleep at night. I promise it is not worth it to stay here, do not risk it! PS. We were actually in the area trying to plan our wedding and I am SO GLAD we didn't get fooled into having it here as it was on our list of places we were originally interested in and hadn't actually gotten the chance to meet the owner until this. Okay, I have not been to Serenisea for maybe 10 years but went up and stayed there many times for 15 years before that. The reason I liked it was because I was a abalone diver and my favorite place is right below the cabin. I have been diving in the cove for over 40 years! Anyway, the owner was never a guy who wanted to invest a penny in these cabins that sit on the choicest land for miles around. Yes, he squeaks when he walks. These things I read here are the same ones that I dealt with way back then. Can you believe it! Very dirty, poor heating/cooling,crappy nick knacks all over also dirty, poor water pressure, very worn out beds, just terrible, the furniture really sucks and yes, it is nice to be able to bring a dog but not when the wet doggy sleeps in one of the few chairs and then you are next to stay there and the furniture smell like wet dog. But guess that is the dog owners fault. But I guess Jim feels his price is right and people will put up with the VERY POOR MAINTENCE and upkeep! Again, it was deluxe for me because we would wake up, walk down and dive, walk back up with the usual full limit of abalone. Then prepare it using mostly our utensils and eat adalone,drink beer and jack and then have a great ride back home. One star for great view and great dive spot none of which he had anything to do with. OH,By The Way,BBB rates it at a D. Nothing makes me sadder that writing a bad review about a business i have liked in the past - but I think it is time to break up with Serenisea. We have stayed at 2 of their houses in the past, Serenade, which was during a heat wave and almost unbearable in the day and yes, next to a graveyard which did not bother us. It had a great view of the ocean and for the price was worth it. We upgraded our ocean experience by renting out Blue Haven, which has an incredible view of the ocean as promised. The furniture and "accent pillows" ( i.e. Holly Hobby or someone's jr. high sewing projects) had seen better days( in the 80's?) but luckily we had enough of our own blankets to cover the furniture. We reported it to the manager and left it at that. This year we rented the same place - I was told that the furniture has been upgraded but it was the same old dirty, not even a thrift store would want stuff. No problem - I actually brought furniture covers just in case. The thing that really got me and totally grossed me out was that the second bedroom had accumulated overnight small brown balls all over the holly hobby quilt and on a table, not to mention in my suitcase. My husband identified them as termite residue which was falling out of the wood ceiling. More and more of them gathered as the trip went on, needless to say we could not use this room. I reported it to the desk clerk, woman who seemed to care about our complaint - I emailed her pictures of it as well as per her request when we arrived home. I told her we would like a partial refund since we were to able to use this room at all. That we four weeks ago. No response. I emailed her again and still no response. Although we've had good times here in the past the customer service is horrible. By ignoring returning customers like us they seem to just not give a damn. There are tons of places to rent in the Gualala area - and you can do better than Serenisea. read more

This is our second time visiting. Stayed here near July 4th and our 40th wedding anniversary. Loved staying at the Colt cottage. We loved the rustic cottage, privacy was excellent and comfortable bed. Our two small dogs enjoyed playing here too. Let's not forget the beautiful ocean cliff view and hot tub. There were five of us staying, the upside is that there were plenty of beds. Although the bunk bed/futons were extremely uncomfortable. Also, the wrong key was given to us so we had to go back and get the correct one when that was realized. IThe hot water downstairs didn't work/wasn't turned on so we all had to shower upstairs. The headboard of the bed downstairs was completely loose, you could sit on the bed and it would bang on the wall like you were jumping on it. There was a hot tub on the upper deck which was nice, but on one of the walkways leading to it the boards were pretty flexible which is startling and doesn't make me feel very good about walking on them. The kitchen is very nice and there's a TV and wifi although we didn't spend any time watching the tv. The upstairs bathroom is nice as well as downstairs but I still wish I could have used the lower shower because it looks like it had been redone recently. It was alright to stay at Anchor Bay but I probably wouldn't do it again read more

The unit we rented for a vacation on 9/26 - 9/28 was in unsanitary condition throughout. It was filthy and everything was broken or damaged. We stayed at the "resort" on 9/26 -9/28 The beds were dirty, the heater didn't work, the fireplace had a leak letting smoke in the cabin, the floors were wet to the touch, and the carpets and bedding were all stained. Hot tub water was BROWN! Red flag one: they offered us a discount to pay in cash, thus limiting our ability to file a claim with our visa card insurance, now I know why. We had nowhere else to stay over the weekend and filed a complaint with the front desk. They wrote up a list of items that we had concerns about and was given the name of the owner to get in touch with when he was in. All we wanted was a confirmation of the poor condition of the room and some method of refund for the conditions we endured there for 3 days. It was their duty to provide a clean room in sanitary condition are part of their customer service agreement, they failed completely. we have lots of photo documentation of the condition of the place. They all show clearly the disgusting shape the room was in. We called the owner Jim, at area code 707 - 884 3836. He was irate, unwilling to listen to us in any capacity and simply denied our claims that anything was wrong at all in the cabin. He was rude but worse so, he refused to call us back. The yelp reviews should have scared us away, but we didn't listen. It's now been a week and Jim hasn't called us and probably never will. read more

We rented a house with friends for New Years. We get into the house and cannot get the heater to work. Mind you, I was six months pregnant and needed to stay warm. We called the office and were told there was nothing they could do to help us. Seriously, nothing. I called back again and they said they would bring space heaters. When we checked out I was very upset and asked to see the owner. After waiting 15 minutes I left. A week later we received our receipt (we paid over $1500 for the weekend) and a letter saying we owed them an apology because the heater worked and we were rude to the office staff. We used to rent from them two to three times a year. Now I will never go back. What happened to the customer is always right. Why wouldn't they just send out a handy man to make the heater work? I don't care if its a holiday weekend. They should have those type of employees on call. read more

We rented cabin #2 for two days, primarily because it boasted WiFi, fireplace and bathtub and was a good price at $105/night. Funky and outdated can be cute, even chic, but this was funky cheap, and not well cared for. We weren't expecting "fancy" for the price, but did expect comfortable and operational. Nice bamboo flooring in entry way and kitchen, and the water tastes great. Office staff was pleasant and helpful. The good stops there. Bathroom is dark, lighted by ancient framed in overhead fluorescent bulb that barely lights the room. I'm a bath-person and enjoy a hot soak but the tub was missing the stopper - we made one from a plastic bag and a wad of paper towels.... but then ran out of hot water at about 4" of water! The bathroom decor was garage sale chic: violet rug, two-tone orange shower curtain and yellow-green towels. A hook on the back of the door would be helpful for bathrobes and clothes. The WiFi is available but very slow, weak and constantly dropping. Don't count on streaming Pandora or Netflix here. All of those things could have been overlooked if we had been comfortably rested - What is better than a cozy bed and a book? Well, the mattress was probably a dandy back in 1988, when the tag said it was manufactured, but 25 years of big butts and kids jumping made it rather like those diagrams of a black hole - all objects are pulled toward the gravity well in the middle. The owner tried to amend the years with a sort of "memory foam" topper, but it only serves to let you experience the fall in a more drawn out, car-sick kind of fashion. Come on folks, if ONE thing is right in a cabin, it should be the mattress. Aren't vacations about sleeping in, not morning back-ache? Cheep, cheep, cheep! Buy a new mattress and pillows, and upgrade your wi-fi, and all will be forgiven.... Oh, throw in another nightstand so we can both read in bed, thank you. Now I'm off to the chiropractor! read more

We love Moonstar Cottage & have stayed there many times. The smallness is nice, the view is awesome and sitting in the hottub and listening to the waves or looking at the starts is totally relaxing. We had a weekend ruined because the heater didn't work - it was downright cold at night (the fireplace at that time wasn't too good). They brought us a space heater.....that didn't work either !! They promised a discount on our next visit. Our next visit wasn't much better - the heater stopped working and they finally brought a space heater that would turn on for 1 minute and turn off for 5......luckily it was warm during the day, but freezing at night. Again the promise -- but we never could get our discount. We wrote letters, called, left a letter when checking out -- no one EVER called us or contacted us. We would love to return, but hate to pay someone who doesn't keep their word. read more

Just finished a wonderful 3 days at serenisea in cabin #2. This place is really spectacular! Mallory , who works in the office made sure that when we arrived, there was plenty of firewood stacked for us , the heaters where turned on so we were warm when we arrived and even drew us a little map of where the hot tub was since we arrived late at night and had never been there before. The hot tub is right on the bluff and has breathtaking views. Soooo relaxing!!! Me and my husband have stayed at many places along the coast but this place was our favorite. We will never go any where else now. Already planning another trip and can't wait! Another plus is you can bring your dog and the don't charge you extra! Believe me, most places charge every night for your pet. Really can't say enough about this place. Recommend Cabin #6 and #2! read more

Just got back from the Castlerock cottage, what a view! Rustic cabin that was old but clean but it could have been a tent for all I cared. Why dwell on what it's not?. This is PRIVATE, there is the back of a neighbors garage about 100 yards south and no homes until you get aroud the cove to the north. Let's just say no suits were needed in hot tub. Coffee in the hot tub in A.M. Wine in the hot tub in P.M. Big cypress's on point over looking coves on either side. We brought a small fold up table and moved chairs to bluff, Bbq rack of lamb with killer wine as sun set, unforgettable. You only get one shot at life, get out there and enjoy! read more

My husband and I frequently stayed in several of the Serenisea cottages and homes for the past 30 years. Since we moved to Seattle four years ago we hadn't been able to drive up the coast highway to visit Gualala. We happened to be in Sonoma so we decided to drive up the coast to visit one of our favorite towns for a romantic getaway for one night. We were so disappointed in the lack of cleanliness in one of the most expensive homes Serenisea has available. When we addressed this with the owner he sent a nasty letter stating that the dirty kitchen we complained about didn't warrant a discount on the night we stayed. WE stayed one night in a house on the cliff that cost us $250 for the night and the owner expected us to clean the kitchen before we wanted to cook in it. Needless to say, we ate out! We had hoped to cook our dinner in the house and watch the sunset while eating but I wasn't going to clean a mess in the kitchen I did not make. There was grease splattered over the back of stove and the toaster. The housekeeper obviously didn't see it because she did not come into the kitchen to clean. Unfortunately Gualala has not been bringing in new business. The town is still picturesque but the best place to stay is at St Orres not Serenisea. I plan to just skip Gualala next time and head straight to Mendocino. read more

i love this place. that's all there is to say. my parents started taking us up there when we were in our early teens. some of the best memories of my life were forged there. this place definitely holds a special pace in my heart. funny now i am going and forging my own memories. OK this is the cabin i stayed in: wood burning fireplace check bed check kitchen w/ all necessary utensils check there is no TV nothing. i went there with my GF and we had a great time the best part about the place though is the hot tub. imagine a hot tub on a cliff with some of the most picturesque coastline in the world before you. THAT is what they got. and the best part you can rent it by the hour privately it's the best at night or at sunset. i love this place. oh and it's pretty cheap i don't think i paid more than 250 bucks for 2 nights. i miss this place now, i wish i could get away right now. i definitely recommend this to anyone who loves the northern CA coast. Oh and as an aside great abalone diving as well. just doesn't get any better than this. read more

we loved our time at Moonstar House. it felt really private, even though a couple was staying at the Cottage next door. the views are amazing and the constant sound of the ocean waves, watching seals jump, grilling, and enjoying the hot tub were all great. it was a cozy place to be when the weather wasn't cooperating and stayed foggy and grey. the location's inconvenient if you want to spend any time in Mendocino (1 hr), be we enjoyed staying close by (rode horses on the beach with Ross Ranch about 30 mins north on the 1, did a short hike on the trail from the yard). we didn't want to leave! read more

This is a quirky little place, but we had a great time. They have four cabins around the office in addition to the vacation homes they maintain. We stayed in one of the cabins, but the others were empty so they let us take a peek. Two of the cabins (#5 and #6) are more expensive, but quite nice. Five in particular is very warmly decorated, with a big deck, and a private sauna. Six was more spacious inside and seemed to have a better entertainment system. We stayed at one of the two budget cabins (#1 and #2) which was affordable, but definitely thrift store interiors. We liked the wood burning stove, despite the fact that the place smell like smoke, and the kitchen was equipped well enough to make meals. I docked one star because they make you take your garbage to the street and strip the beds when you check out, which seems like it just annoys the guests more than saves them money. All in all, they had plenty of availability last minute, and the nicer cabins would be a good choice if you have a family or several couples sharing a space. I'll keep it in mind as a back up for next time, but will definitely look around more first. read more

I'm giving this 2 stars for the views but not the houses. We have stayed here at the Moonstar house E and at on of the cabins. We have found the houses to be problematic. We arrived here to find the heater was not working. After 4 hours and the staff coming over we finally got the heater int he main room working. Pilot had to be re lit. The heater in the second bedroom never really got going. There are little things that keep coming up that make you wonder what's going on here. Like the toilet and shower are in different rooms. The room with the shower and sink has no tissue and no waste basket. The toilet has a waste basket. There are no reading lamps next to the bed so in order to read you have have the overhead bright light on. The lighting in the kitchen is very dim. Especially over the sink. There have been broken sockets not enough outlets and other issue that indicate these premises are not kept up. For 275 a night you expect more. The owner is very weird and not understanding or willing to be flexible when we realized our coupon had expired but no one checked to verify this when we made our reservations. We will find other accommodations next time. read more

My wife and I planned a quick weekend get away at the Blue Haven House a Serenisea vacation rental. Although the house was located on the bluff overlooking the ocean, the website indicated that it had a sunny deck overlooking the ocean. That was definitely not the case, and we had to drag chairs onto the adjacent property to even see the ocean. Upon entering the home at arrival we noticed a smell primarily around the refrigerator and general kitchen area similar to a dead animal. It was present throughout the stay,and intensified when the heater kicked on. In addition, none of the outlets except one worked in the master bathroom area, and the water pressure in the master bath shower was very weak with the valve set so low that the water was barely warm. For the fireplace - we were instructed to bring kindling, but they would provide the wood. The wood provided for the fireplace was wet and made it difficult to keep a fire going so we ended up buying our own wood. The dishwasher was rusty inside and the few items in the pantry were rotten and/or rancid. The BBQ was rusted and falling apart. At check out we made the management at the office aware of the issues and although they indicated they would check things out they seemed somewhat disinterested. Although we cannot speak to other vacation rentals managed by this company the overall maintenance and attention to detail was sorely lacking at this unit. read more
