Generally speaking, I view car buying somewhere between a root canal and a colonoscopy on the "I'm really looking forward to this experience" meter. I have to say that Serra Subaru not only exceeded my (admittedly snake belly low) expectations for buying a car, but it was a really pleasant experience for any sort of transaction. Specifically, Adante Amos deserves recognition. He demonstrated the patience of a monk while we tested multiple cars across all of the Serra lots; I think we took upwards of 4 hours of his time. All the while he was exceedingly pleasant, and most importantly, not "salesy". I'd highly recommend giving Serra a shot at your car purchase, and definitely recommend asking for Adante if you do. read more

I presented w/ a key fob to be programmed after speaking to an individual on the phone (when the appt was scheduled). She asked if I needed to be in contact w/ the parts department to secure the key fob. I declined, and stated that I had my own key that I would carry into the appt. Upon arrival, the service appointment was accepted. Nothing was said about my key fob possibly NOT being able to be programmed. During the process, I was told that the key fob was not programming correctly. I asked for a quote on a new key/fob in stock. After two hours, I was told that 1) my key fob I carried in could not be programmed, 2) my car needed $4k in other services, 3) a new key/fob would be ordered @ $500 including programming the new key--yes I'd be charged a second time for key fob programming. I was told that keys purchased online don't usually program properly....then why accept the service appointment and attempt to program the key fob? I was charged $169 for this experience. I was not happy about it, and asked for reconsideration. I was told that the "technician had to be paid for his time". I paid my fee and departed. A week later, a followup call from Serra was made to me. I explained my position in detail. The lady said that the head service advisor would be following up w/ me. That was more than 10 days ago, and no one has contacted me since then. Last week, I took my key fob to a local locksmith, and the key was programmed in under 10 mins with no issues. I paid $50 cash for the service to be done correctly and efficiently. I would have paid at least $250 for the service given my experience w/ Serra. I will be duplicating my review on Google, as it's clear Serra does not care that they provided no useful service and wasted my time and money on a ridiculously expensive endeavor. I fully believe they wanted to sell my a new key fob for $$$$$, as the locksmith had no issues at all. read more

We have gone here 3 times for basic oil change and tire rotations. Each time the prices have changed as if they are making the price up. Sometimes we get a car wash with service, sometimes they don't care to. The wait times with an appointment is usually 2 hours, what is the point of an appointment then? Its a basic service that should take no longer than 30/45 min. And they no really a joy to be around. They take advantage of the fact that they are the only Subaru dealership within an hour or 2 drive so they don't try very hard. No longer going here. read more

You expect to pay more for service when you use a dealership, but in return you expect mechanics that have significant experience working with your vehicle. Apparently not so at Subaru of Champaign County. I brought my Crosstrek in when it started having A/C problems... Trip #1: They told me it was my coolant (which wasn't empty) and refilled it, then sent me on my way. Still broken. Trip #2: They told me it was (I think) the AC Condenser and charged ~$150 to replace it, then sent me on my way. Still broken. Trip #3: They told me that my AC wasn't broken. When I showed them that it was, they told me I needed a new compressor (on a 4 year old car!) and that they would replace it for $1000+. Shenanigans. I took my car to another mechanic who said that the compressor was fine; turned out to be a temperature sensor. He also told me that the break pads Subaru of Champaign County wanted to replace (for $400) would be good for at least another year. They also lost my keys once when I went to pick my car up. Good times. I didn't buy my Subaru here so I can't comment on their sales department, but I do not recommend using their service department. read more

There a two kinds of car dealers: the slimy ones, and the friendly ones. While in the end both have the same purpose - sell you a car, I find the slimy ones just impossible to deal with. After a not so pleasant experience with the slimy type at another dealership in town, I ended up at the Worden-Martin Subaru, which, as I was happy to discover, is run by the friendly kind! I had a great experience there. I went with the idea of possibly purchasing an Outback, and Kelly, the manager, was very helpful. He was in no way overbearing or pushy (which is the best way to get me to leave a dealership and never come back), but still did a great job at explaining why I should buy one of his cars. Sure enough, I was back two days later, and I am now the proud owner of a brand new Subaru... Seriously, I was impressed by the quality of the service they offered. They obviously seem to care about customer satisfaction (rather than just increasing their sale volume), and the difference is noticeable. I'll probably go back for service, and hopefully I'll be equally satisfied. read more

I'm somehow on their phone list, I've spoken with someone there three or four times telling them that I don't own a Subaru, I've never set foot in their showroom, I've been assured that they'll get my number removed from their system but they have failed to do so. I'm still getting calls and voicemails about a car I do not own and someone who actually owns a Subaru isn't getting calls from them about service reminders. He actually had personal matters to attend to in one of the days during the period of our transaction but I was endorsed well to his managers, and Justin made sure everything was taken cared of. My left rear tire blew 4 days after i got the car but Justin made sure I was able to contact roadside assistance and their service manager. They do business well and good. read more

They dealt fairly with us and even resolved an issue we had about a spare key. Our two issues were promptly resolved. We were very pleased with Preston's efficient and courteous approach to working with us. Enjoyed the process more than I thought. I went to a couple of other dealers and one wasn't willing to negotiate while Subaru was. It is very easy to view prices at other dealers and all the dealers were very close to one another. Some dealers were offering some deals but it wasn't on the vehicle I had picked out. The sales staff was nice and easy to work with. I controlled the process they did not, which was great and a nice change. The loan process also went smooth and I felt like I wasn't upsold on anything but rather sold on additional items that would protect me as the buyer and help preserve some value of my car over the next 5 years. All in all, I love my Forester Sport. Love how it drives, and love how it makes me feel safe. I have had issues with WM Subaru since I tried to buy my car from them years ago. They tried to get me to pay extra fees to drive the car over from another dealership because they didn't have what I wanted (basic model, any color). That's just shady (I talked to someone from the Subaru company who agreed). I drove all the way to Indiana to buy my car. Their shadiness in selling was only exceeded by their shadiness in service. A couple of times when I've gone to just get an oil change they've told me I need my "brakes and calipers cleaned" for about $200. This is a BOGUS service! Look in your manual- it never suggests doing it, and yet they claim you should do it at least every 15000 miles. This time when I got my oil changed, they tried to sell me on the caliper cleaning again. When I refused, they magically came back to me with "your accessory drive belt needs replacing" (suspiciously also costing about $200). They said I should do this "right away." My car has about 36000 miles and while I know belt replacement is standard maintenance, it typically happens after at least double the mileage I have. I took my car to a very reputable shop for a second opinion. The guy looked at it for about 3 minutes (for free), comes back and says "nothing is wrong with your belts." He even took the time to show me what a bad belt would look like. He said that the Subaru dealership is "notorious" for doing things like this. I told him about the caliper cleaning and he laughed and said he's heard that before and doesn't know what it's supposed to do. Service used to be fine when Josh B. and DJ were there, but it's gone downhill fast since they've left. Unfortunately I still have to go there for warranty stuff, but that will be the only reason I ever go again. read more

The service department here is a joke. I had my vehicle in for a 30,000 mile service and the tech. forgot to refill the coolant reservoir. My engine overheated and smoke poured into the cabin, so I drove back to the dealership. The same tech tried to cool the engine off by pouring windshield washer fluid all over the engine bay! Unfortunately, that isn't even the tip of the iceberg in terms of mistakes and I still haven't received a refund for the service. The General Manager will slick his greasy hair back and look you in the eyes while he lies to you. These people might sound genuine while they are selling you a car, but good luck trying to get quality service at this place. read more

Unfortunately - even though we love the Subaru car we have, we have had horrible experience dealing with the service team here. Phone responses and conversations are consistently rude, service is poor and extremely overpriced. Willingness to fix known Subaru issues even under warranty is very, very low. Here are some of our experiences to date: 1. Oil consumption issue. Our car was needing 1.5-2.5 quarts of oil added every single oil change. At first they tried to tell us this was normal (even though I complained about it every oil change). After Subaru released a recall/test for oil consumption, they told us that our car had failed the consumption test. Insane. After forcing them to run the test again - they admitted finally that the car was consuming more oil. They refused to refund me the cost of the oil even though we had documentation and receipts. 2. AT/Transmission Oil issue. When driven for 2 hours plus our vehicle regularly lights up with AT/Oil light. After 3 visits to the shop we are no further than the first. The next suggested alternative is that the shop takes the car and drives it for 2 hours until the light comes on to read the code. It has been an extremely frustrating experience. 3. Oil change regularity. Each time I take my car in for service a particular employee would try to badger me into getting an oil change after 5k miles (even though Subaru as a manufacturer recommends 7500). 4. Depending on the employee you get when you phone their service desk you can have a very undesirable/rude experience. 5. Phone surveys - each time we've visited their service center we've been hit by a phone survey almost immediately after. Each time we've indicated that we were not satisfied and would like a return call. We have never received a call. read more

I took my Subaru there for repair. Some employees are nice and welcoming and some are mean, but that is expected of car mechanics, i guess. Also (as expected) prices are high for parts and labor. What I did not expect was to have the car returned to me with defective repairs and the cabin full of grease. The dealers also recommended thousand of dollars in repairs, which according to several other mechanics are absolutely not necessary. To their credit, the service was very reasonable and did fix defective repairs after these were brought up to his attention. read more

Buying a car....a fun and yet totally terrifying process for most.... :( After months and months and months of test drives, reading consumer reports magazines, looking up crash test ratings, analyzing the difference between "intelligent" AWD and "full-time" AWD, and stressing my already stressed brain out, I finally decided to purchase a 2011 Subaru Legacy 2.5i Premium w/ the all weather package and moon roof ;) Living in Decatur, I searched all the Subaru dealerships in a 75 mi radius and found THE ONE...well a graphite Subaru legacy w/ all the fixins' and trimmins' I desired in Champaign. Whoohoo. I made contact with the dealership and prayed no one would pick it up before I could get over there. Sure enough, I arrived in Champaign at around 5:30 after work on a Monday and purchased my car right on the spot!!!!! The sales guy I dealt with was knowledgeable about the car (particularly since the dealership sold exclusively Saturns about 8 months ago), friendly, and (most importantly) honest. As you have read above, and in an effort not to be swindled, which I hear happens quite a bit in these types of negotiations, I DID my research. I knew from just about every website what the invoice price of the car was and how much each addition was worth and they matched all the numbers I found digit for digit. I was shocked, I didn't think car salesman dealt this way...or maybe I just watch too much TV. After all the numbers were lined out, I went over to get approved for financing. Their financing lady is beyond helpful and friendly. No fast-talking or nickle and diming you here. Love it! On top of that when the sale was all final, the sales guy stayed at least 30 min. past closing to go over EVERY inch of the car with me to make sure I didn't have any remaining questions after leaving the dealership. Amazing! It basically goes without saying I left happy (and relieved) that I finally got my new car and it was THAT easy. read more

I don't recommend the service or sales department. When we were purchasing our outback they refuse to deal with us or match the price of the dealership in Bloomington....ending up driving 45 miles to save 2 thousand dollars. First time we got service, department put a huge dent in our driver door & acted like they didn't do it & wasn't a big deal (Believe me, this wasn't something you just won't notice)- but agreed to fix it...did a poor job. Flash forward 2 years, decided to give another chance...bad decision. Made appointment at 3, got there 10 minutes early, my car sat in the check in bay until 3:30 (so 40 minutes after I got there & 30 minutes after my scheduled appointment). Took over an hour and a half to get an oil change (with an appointment). Disappointing experiences. read more

Traveling from Missouri to Ohio on a Friday afternoon, we had a check engine light come on. The vehicle was experiencing lack of power, and as a result of the CEL, the cruise was disabled. We are caring for my wife's dad who is in his final days, and we were on a whirlwind trip back home for the weekend. We had to head back to Missouri on Sunday so we REALLY needed help getting this repaired. We called Subaru of Springfield, IL, but they said they were booked. I explained the nature of our emergency, but that didn't change anything. We called Subaru of Champaign and talked to Shannon. She said their service department was over-booked, but they would get me in. We arrived at 4pm, got a shuttle to a local restaurant, and back, and were treated like loyal customers. They found the trouble while we were eating dinner and had the car ready to go shortly after we returned. The service folks stayed late to get everything done. SO AWESOME!!! When we are ready for our next Subaru, we will buy it at Subaru of Champaign, even if we have to drive 4 hours. Seriously! read more

Got my oil change here. They should have told me they use Volvoline instead Subaru motor oil. Allen, you need to cheer up, your customer service is NOT ACCEPTABLE, please smile, show your warmth ( may be I am just used to L.A. where every service personnel fake their smile and sincerity, that's the very least I expected from everyone at my facility). Now, the car wash, Grand Subaru in Chicago does my regular oil change and finish the job with a car wash. Initially told us it was in the service center. Later told us it had been sold. Couldn't answer any of my questions about the model. I'm glad I made the trip to this dealership to purchase my first used car because the sales staff provided undoubtedly the easiest, most painless car buying experience I or anyone in my family ever had. I first met Cortez for a test drive in which he patiently listened to which driving dynamics I wanted to see. He took me to several local roads with generous curves to ensure I tested everything. When we returned to the dealership, sales manager Kelly and used car manager Preston were professional, friendly, and accommodating through the negotiating process. Kelly also allowed us to take the car to a local shop for an independent inspection. The mechanic only needed 15 minutes for a 30-point inspection to determine that the car was in practically-new condition after 14k miles. He didn't even bother charging us for the time. After the dealership washed the car and completely filled the nearly-empty gas tank, we noticed a few scratches on the door that they buffed for us while we completed the paperwork. Lastly, because the car was formerly used in a state without a front-plate mandate, Preston offered to reimburse me for a front-plate bracket when I visited a Mazda dealership for one. I later confirmed that I didn't need one and just installed the plate on the front myself back at home, but I still appreciate Preston's written offer to reimburse me if I had to purchase anything. Again, my family and I had quite a bit of skepticism about the used-car purchasing process, but Cortez, Kelly, and Preston dealt fairly and honestly with us and gave a great product. I hope every buyer has the easy buying experience we just had. We highly recommend this dealership! (Also, thanks to Cortez again for staying outside with no jacket to help us tighten down the bolts for the rear licence plate. He is great!) read more

I recently moved into the area and had to choose from three dealerships in the area. Yelp ruled one out immediately. Another wasn't a Subaru Stellar Performer. I decided to try Subaru of Champaign County despite a couple of negative Yelp reviews back from '08 under their corporate name Worden-Martin Subaru. I went in for a 60,000 mile tune up, a recall and a possible transmission problem on my Forester XT. I brought in Subaru's maintenance schedule in case there would be any debate about what maintenance was required. I was on guard a bit, because over the telephone, they mentioned that they have "good", "better" and "best" tiers of service. As it turned out, I was being overly cautious. Alan went over the recommended maintenance and gave me a detailed price list upfront broken out by task. I also opted for some of the "better" and "best" services that I had planned to get, but it was all low pressure and courteous. The real test was the transmission and/or turbo problem that I had started experiencing. They worked the problem until finally contacting Subaru to figure out the solution. I was impressed with their tenacity, since that took quite a bit of time after the other work was completed. I was pleasantly surprised to find "No Charge" by that item presumably because they just had to reprogram the transmission. The waiting area at Subaru of Champaign County is pleasant and nicely stocked with drinks and free WiFi. Although I left my car there most of the day, I was onsite for the last couple of hours. During that time, I had to get something from my car. The garage itself was tidy and professional without any of the screwing around that you sometimes encounter. They aren't the cheapest garage for sure, but I was very satisfied with the overall quality. Alan even applied a coupon to my total which saved me $100. For a comprehensive tune up, I paid just over $800. I wasn't able to find an independent shop in this area specializing in Subarus, so it was worth it to pay a bit more for a competent shop. As far as I can tell, SoCC fixed my transmission problem on their first attempt. If anything changes, I will update this review, but so far so good. read more
