Have taken my old European car there, esp. after the dealer told me it "wasn't leaking coolant" although I saw coolant drips on the driveway, and had to keep adding coolant. Twice at the dealer, and they basically told me there wasn't a problem. Peter B worked on it, and said the issue is the hose size -- metric vs. US. If someone uses a US hose, it will be not be exactly right, and will leak once the car heats up and everything is at pressure. No more problems after Peter B worked on it. Also took my older Camry there, and asked about my newer Camry. Peter B (ie, the phone staff) was upfront about things they can work on, and things they don't. They are very busy, and I prefer to know this information before booking an appointment for 6 weeks in the future. So, I think is a time saver to have a thorough discussion on the phone at Peter B. (I hate these webforms dealers are using now -- there's a) no place to record specific issues, they basically only want a simple job, like a 40k checkover, etc. and b) dealer service intake staff never read the webform anyway. It's strange to me that all of the negative reviews for this shop, including my own, are now deleted. I was in here a little over a year ago for an oil change and they ended up charging me over $100 because they "inspected" a front wheel well, which must have taken them about 60 seconds. There used to be at least three other negative reviews with similar stories, but they've all disappeared? Listen ... just be forewarned. They do good work but they're really expensive and they will charge you for every single thing they do to your car. In my case, I was intending to bring my car to them repeatedly if the first visit went well. When I saw the bill, and the woman at the counter was pretty rude to me for questioning why I had a problem paying over $100 for an oil change, I decided to never set foot in their shop again. So I was surprised to see some negative reviews but - ok. I've never had a bad experience over many trips to Peter B's. In fact, I've uniformly had great experiences. But a few cautionary statements: they aren't inexpensive - and yes they bill for all the work they do, how would they not? - but they are worth it. And they are usually booking Waaay in advance, like - weeks. So do give them a try, but plan on it taking awhile to get in. Why bother? Because their work is really good but mostly - for me - because they never seem to do that thing that other auto shops - and plumbers - do, e.g. "we installed new wipers, but found you also need a new engine" ... that nonsense. So they are worth it for not having to worry that they'll do unnecessary work, and that is invaluable. Unfortunately, oil changes are no longer $25 (anywhere - hello, synthetic oil) but you're paying for experience and a straight deal. I'm not wealthy, but they are worth the money. I've taken my regular hatchback and wife's compact SUV there, and a classic Mustang from my dad ... all good. No regrets, unlike just about every other shop I've used in town over many years of living here. read more

In short, they did fix my car, which is of course the primary concern of an auto shop. Still, the experience left me feeling so offput that I know I won't be back. Make sure you dress quite nicely if you do decide to go here. They will be sure to openly judge you based on the way you look. At least, that was what I experienced when Peter told me he was asking for money down since I "look like the type who'd try to get out of paying." Side note, the service ended up costing $500 more than was quoted. I don't necessarily hold this against them, but coupled with the fact that he accused me of looking shady and poor, it really just seems to add injury to insult. I'm new to the area, so I'm not sure where to go next time I'm in need of auto work, but it certainly won't be here. Hopefully next roll of the dice works out better. read more

Peter B's is the only place I trust with my car. Excellent work, always very professional, and it's done at a fair price. Of particular value are their buyers checks for a used car. They are THOROUGH. A friend was looking at a used car at a discount car lot. He asked if he could take it to a mechanic for a once-over. The salesman happily agreed, and asked where he was going to take it. My friend answered "Peter B's." The salesman suddenly flipped out: "oh... well... you know, Peter B's finds a lot of things wrong that aren't really... problems." Peter is the ONLY person my wife and I have trusted for auto repairs since the early 80s, when he was working out of the garage of his home. His current shop in Urbana is so pristine that you could eat breakfast off his shop floor. Peter knows cars obscenely well. And he's uncompromisingly honest. On many occasions he has told us there's a potentially expensive problem with our car, but "We can wait and check it out in a few months." And a few months later, he would say, "It's still OK, we'll just keep an eye on it." And we would end up getting rid of the car before we ever had to have the work done. A number of people, I have learned, bring their cars to Peter from Chicago and even St. Louis, having moved there from C-U, because they trust no one else. He specializes in higher-end vehicles, but is willing to work even on our ancient minivans. We never purchase a used car (the only kind we buy) without having Peter do a buyer's check. Once I drove a potential purchase for him to check it out. It was summer, and the large shop door was open. He apparently heard me coming, because before I could get out of the car he was there, saying, "Take it back. You don't want this vehicle!" Then he explained. He had me get out of the car, with the engine running, and said, "Do you hear this very faint sound. . . ?" (and he described what I was supposed to listen for). "That's such-and-such [I'm ignorant about cars, so I don't remember what it was], and that means that pretty soon this car is going to need very expensive work." He could have charged me $85 for a buyer's check (it's more now), but instead he saved me money and a lot of time. I trust Peter absolutely. Having him as our mechanic is one of the aspects of residing in Urbana, both my wife and I agree, that adds significantly to the quality of life here. In fact, Peter B's is so classy that on a number of occasions I have called up Cindy, the office manager, and asked her about my car, and she has provided highly useful/ technical advice. Over the past ~15 to 20 years, I've taken several cars of mine there for numerous repairs and maintenance. Invariably, the recommended repairs fixed the problem, the repairs they completed did not need redoing, and they have never recommended work that was not necessary. I've had considerable experience working on older cars, and Peter has an unusual combination of competence and honesty, not often encountered in the auto repair industry. I do take my cars to the dealer for work when under warranty, but after that I would not take it anywhere else, except Peter B's. read more
