Wow, this place is bomb. Visited for the first time during lunch on a Wednesday. Although signage told us to seat ourselves and that they were short staffed, we were still kindly welcomed. We were given menus and were served almost immediately after being seated. The ambience of this place is unmatched. Great tunes playing. I love the rustic DIY look of the tables and seat options. Very clean and unlike any where else I've dined here in Anchorage. Real lush beautiful plants every where. The best service I've had post-covid. Amazing job Serranos. For drinks my partner had the Mexican Mule but liked the house margarita w/ mango better. I had the La Pina Picante Press which was the perfect amount of spice and flavor. All their drinks have aesthetically pleasing presentation, I love it! For food we ordered the asada fries which was huge and amaze-balls! Definitely my go-to Mexican food spot. Their chefs have created an amazing, authentic menu with good portions for prices. Only once was I disappointed in the portion (some street tacos) - but they still tasted amazing, so worth every penny. Super fresh tasting cocktails. Good service and never have had issues with ordering out either. Can be a bit loud by the bar so I typically sit closer to the kitchen side (on Fireweed location). Today I really wanted Mexican food. I got the Tongue fajita burrito With chips and salsa. My margherita was delicious. You get the smallest scoop in the world of guacamole and a small scoop of beans and rice. My burrito was too salty but the beans and rice were good. Customer service was badd. You really have to do everything. Today was my 1st time coming to this restaurant because my coworker said it was so amazing and I had to go. I finally got a chance to come down here with a friend for lunch after driving by numerous times forgetting that this was directly across from Barnes & Noble as an option for Mexican food after doing some studying. We were greeted by a friendly server right away upon entering. In this restaurant, you order at the front counter with the menus provided by the register and seat yourselves afterwards at a table or booth of your choice. The dining area is spacious and multi-tiered with steps leading down to a lower level with more tables and booths. This part of the room caught my eye as I saw that they had plants growing poblano peppers and chiles lined up against the windows in the sunlight. I thought it was cool for a restaurant to grow their own ingredients and it looks like there were more plants being grown in the outdoor patio area. Drinks are also self-serve with a salsa bar next to the soda fountains. I decided to go with the Torta Sandwich (shredded beef with guacamole, tomatoes, mayo, and queso fresco served on toasted bolillo bread) and a side of Cilantro Parmesan Fries. The wait was about 10 or 15 minutes, a reasonable time for the busy lunch rush and a good size crowd for 1PM. The sandwich was delicious with plenty of guacamole and tomatoes although the shredded beef could've used a little more salt. The Cilantro Parmesan Fries were outstanding. The texture and the blended ingredients made this one of the best fries I've had recently and no ketchup was needed for these. The unique texture of the fries was similar to Brew City Fries from the Carolina Ale House back when I lived in the Raleigh area. There are some items on the menu that I intend to try out in future visits. Some of these include the Enchiladas Suizas (two corn tortillas filled with shredded chicken and cheese topped with tomatillo cream sauce and melted pepper jack....one of my personal favorites and not all Mexican restaurants in Anchorage have this on their menu), the Fajita Burrito (the basic fajita ingredients of sautéed peppers, onions, cilantro, rice, refritos, and choice of meat but wrapped up as a burrito rather than served with the tortillas on the side), Tortilla Soup (tomato-based soup with chicken broth, avocado, panela cheese, fried tortilla noodles, and cilantro....this one sounds like the next item to try), and the Ceviche appetizer (tiger prawns cured in citrus juices with cucumber, jalapenos, carrots, and onions with a side of chips). I don't know where they get their tortillas but they are so good and the tacos are delicious. There's a variety of salsas to choose from from Mild to 911 hot! Easily the best Mexican food in Anchorage. (at least that I've had, I'm never done searching for good Mexican food though. It's a search that never stops.) The menu is tight and focused, not loose and sprawling. You're not going to get the "number 88" here, you're going to get one of a handful of burritos/tacos/etc, and you're going to pick your meat. Don't know what meat you want? What is your problem? How are you ever going to choose a 401k plan? Buy/lease a car? Take a lover? Or buy a house, if you don't know what meat you want? GET IT TOGETHER. What impresses me most: The quality of the meats, ESPECIALLY the steak, is HIGH. Often steak at Mexican joints is kind of tough and salty, but doesn't have much else going on. Not here. The steak is tender with a lovely charcoal'd (only way I know how to describe it, it tastes grilled but not quite smoked) taste. It's perfect. The homemade sauces are fantastic, and are...actually HOT! I love the fire habanero sauce, it actually deserves to have "fire" in the name, unlike sauces at so many other Mexican places in this world. Areas for improvement: I just wish there were more veggie representation in the dishes here. Most everything is very meat-beans-rice with every little veggie action. This *is* Alaska though, beggars can't be choosers. Bonus points: Having good local beer on tap! Even in a place like Portland, there are many places that don't have any non-Mexican beer on tap...or worse, BEER IN BOTTLES ONLY. I'm not sure why so many folks prefer Taco King. This an a-ok fast-casual restaurant. You walk in, you place your order at the counter, you receive a table number, and they bring your order to your table when it's ready. They don't have queso! What sort of self-respecting Mexican joint dares to not serve queso? Thus, Serrano's will never quite be capable of winning my heart. They do have guacamole. It's a sizable portion and it's alright. But it's definitely far from above average. You can also just pay approx. $2.50 for a small basket of chips and help yourself to salsas from the "salsa bar". But be forewarned, the "salsa bar" is far from a nice, pretty layout of various salsas. It's a small, non-pretty cart with a bunch of sitting out all day salsas. The salsa are all a-ok. None of them are above average. (The "salsa bar" and lack of queso really makes me miss Lime Fresh back East in the lower 48.) The menu has the usual options - taco, burritos, and salads, rice and beans. The taco salad was ho-hum. The tacos were average. It's all just a-ok and average. On the bonus side, they do have a couple of beers on tap. So Serrano's beats out some of the other area Mexican fast-ish places for that simple fact. Food is amazing, always. The staff have been great all 7 times I've visited. However today, I am waiting on the drive- thru and was greeted by the staff that helped me last time. She gave me a menu and greeted me with great energy and enthusiasm. However another woman took over and she was the equal opposite. Very abrasive, snappy, uninterested in making sure I was ordering exactly what I wanted and she cut me off to interrupt, cut me off to shut the window, and over talked me multiple times as I inquired about the menu items. Very rude. 0 tip. As my mood declined , I definitely made it clear it deflated, she did not change her tone or approach as a matter of fact she seemed a bit pleased. I grew up with Latinos and have had experiences with them that weren't so friendly however the majority of them were awesome as we are both minorities. I'm not sure if she did not appreciate my tone of complexion, if she were having a rough start to her shift, or if that is the nature of her character. However it definitely solidified the very first poor experience I've had at Serranos drive thru. Sadly. Food is amazing best Mexican cuisine in town just be wary of the service, they may not like you so don't expect customer service. Is it Mexican food? Sure. They've got tacos, enchiladas, Spanish music. Is it a Mexican (food) restaurant? I don't think so. With some of the dishes they've put on their menu, (egg rolls and pork galore burger) I'd say Mexican "fusion" suits them more. I was torn between 3 and 4 stars. You walk in and it's an open hall type area that forks and you're left peeking around corners to figure out which way to go. Then need some signs telling you where to go and something saying to seat yourself because it's not obvious when you walk in. The seating area is a bit odd the way it's laid out. The menu is small and simple, I like that. But I just wasn't wowed by it, I was a bit confused. Egg rolls on the menu? It's a Mexican restaurant and their "signature" burger has ham, bacon, and polish sausage? I don't get it, but that's what my, will eat anything, boyfriend ordered. I got the Serrano burrito with carne asada. We got a chicken quesadilla as an appetizer. My burrito and the quesadilla came out at the same time, so dings on that. Boyfriend's burger showed up five minutes later. The burrito was sliced halfway-diagonally, I've never seen that before. I don't know why, how, what..I just don't get it. BUT my burrito was delicious. I loved that they grill the burrito so the tortilla is hot and crisp! The asada was spot on! Like straight up carne asada I'd get back home in Cali. There was a decent selection of local beers, but we opted for a hibiscus lemonade and an horchata. Bf said the horchata beats Taco King's and the hibiscus lemonade was light and refreshing. They get their most points from me on the salsa bar. Salsa and sour cream is delicious. And omg the guacamole is so good it almost doesn't belong there. Service is non existent really. Order up at the front. No one checks on you or anything. You get your own utensils. Food is brought to you, that's it. Really, 4.5 stars, but that's not a choice Yelp let's me choose. Upscale REAL Mexican food. We don't come often because the prices are high, even for Anchorage, but everything I have had here was pretty good. I'm from Texas, so I am used to a slightly different kind of Mexican. Half my family is Mexican from Mexico, but I guess they're all from regions not reflected by this particular cuisine. And all of my cousins are old enough to be my parents, so they all grew up having to make do with American ingredients. Their food is fantastic, but I don't know how *truly* authentic it is. Things on the Serranos menu also often don't match my expectations, so read carefully. For example, one day they had a special "Chile Con Carne" on the menu. I knew better than to think that this was a TexMex style of chili gravy traditionally served on enchiladas and sometimes tamales, but I *was* expecting it to be a beef rich chili. Nope it was Chili Verde, a green chili pork stew. Good, but a totally different recipe. Since they opened the bar, the restaurant is busier and you no longer order at the counter. Solid choice for Mexican food in Anchorage, but definitely not the "hole in the wall" fantastic, cheap Mexican that I grew up with. read more

Fate brought me here as Taco Tuesday at my work building's cafe sold out before I could get there, and I had a hankering for tacos. Tired of Taco King and wanting to try something new, I ended up at Serrano's. I'm very glad I did. I ordered two chicken tacos in flour tortillas with rice and beans. I wanted to try their hibiscus lemonade but they were out, so I got a horchata instead. The tacos hit the spot. The chicken was juicy and the rice and beans actually had flavor, unlike many similar restaurants. I liked how the tortillas were grilled in the middle so it was a bit crispy and easier to eat than a plain soft tortilla taco. The horchata was good, but I wish it had more cinnamon flavor. I particularly like their salsa/condiment bar. I got the hot salsa and chipotle sauce, and they were both actually hot. Hot enough to make my nose run (something no other Mexican place in town has managed to do). They also have the "Serrano 911" sauce so I can only imagine how spicy that is. The salsa was fresh and flavorful. I loved the chipotle sauce since it had a smoky sweetness and a spicy aftertaste. The guy at the counter was very warm and polite. He even brought my order to me in a bag with utensils and napkins which I wasn't expecting so that was a nice touch. I found the minimalist design refreshing. The interior isn't your typical bright color explosion you find at most Mexican restaurants. Everything was clean from what I could see. Overall this is definitely the best fast casual Mexican restaurant in Anchorage. I will be back. read more

Yelp 100 Challenge 2017 - # 69/100 The Asada fries ($11.99) is by far the best tasting ever. The carne asada had the most perfect blend of spices I have ever tasted, coupled with the smoky flavor from the grill it was one heck of a foodgasm I've ever experienced. I Ordered the shrimp tostada as well. This may sound like an oxymoron but the shrimp were huge. Gigantic, and fat, and juicy, and sweet, and fresh. I was trying so hard to eat without slobbering all over myself. It so worth the $6.95 price tag. Wish I got two orders of the shrimp tostada instead of trying the ceviche ($13.99) which was a little disappointing to me but my sister enjoyed it, so oh well. Mom had two hard shell tacos ($3.95 each) with beans and rice ($3.49) and she finished them like a pro. We also got the churros ($5.99) which came out hot and fresh after we ate our food. Fountain drinks were $2.99 each. Chips and salsa were not free I found out ($3.49), as I tried to figure out the almost $60 bill for the above orders (remember there's no tax here). Which was ok, but I don't remember ordering chips and salsa. Although the salsa was fresh, the chips were hard and stale. I like their tabletops covered with pennies. Customer services was good, other than the guy at the counter who had the blandest, unhappiest expression I've seen.
