My wife and I went for dinner at 6 pm on a Friday night and we were seated right away. This is a small place with about 15 tables. Generally, when we come here, you can get a table right away. Our server came right over and gave us a menu. The menu is large, and you will find all your favorite Mexican dishes. My wife and I both ordered the enchilada suiza, and I also asked for a bottled Mexican Coke. We then served chips and salsa. The chips tasted like they came right out of a bag and the salsa really didn't have that much flavor, so I added some hot sauce and that helped. After a short time, we were brought our meals, and everything looked really good. There was plenty of cheese, sauce, and sour cream. Everything tasted good. My wife also enjoyed her dinner. This place is a good choice when you are looking for fast service, decent food at a reasonable price. It is rarely packed, and the service is always on point. This is not my favorite Mexican restaurant, but it is one that I go to when I'm in the area and hungry.

Want a quick lunch? Then don't come here! It took forever for everything from being seated to having salsa and chips to having the waitress take my drink and food order to paying. My food did come pretty quickly though. The biggest reason why Serranos took forever is because there is one waitress that speaks English and another that does not that just runs food. The poor waitress that speaks English is overwhelmed! She is having to do everything for about the 10 tables in the restaurant. But still there needs to be some better organization. But I do have to say that all my food was delicious and what you would find normally from a Mexican restaurant. Nothing to set it apart except for the service needs better organization.

Very solid 80% on the Mexican food authenticity scale. This place also has, in my personal opinion, a 90% in quality. When I say 80% in authenticity, I don't mean quality. I mean Mexican authentic compared to more americanized Mexican. Now let me give you my scale for authenticity. Mexican Authenticity defined: For example, A place (not this one) with Tacos that have cheddar cheese tomatoes and/or black olives are an big indicator of americanization, as are absences of homemade tortillas or chips or the limes for tacos or the pickled carrots. On the other hand, Tacos with grilled steak on two corn tortillas with only cebollo y cilantro are Authentic Mexican, as are, jalapeños toreandos, homemade tortillas, and homemade salsa. By way of example, Taco bell rates a 0 on authentic scale and a place in pilsen that makes its own homemade tortillas and fries its own chips and has pickled carrots, onions and jalapeños is 100% authentic. Now why does this place not have a 100% quality? Because in large part because all their homemade stuff rocks 100%. For example - their refried beans are light and fluffy as is their rice. The steak tacos are spot on and no grizzle (which ironically takes away from authenticity ). So whats missing are home made tortilla chips (they have good ones but I bet if they made them in house it would rock). They are missing a few more salsa varieties on the table. They are missing just a few odds and ends that I just cant put my finger on but this place is damn good!

Food was so-so. I've had better and I've had worse. Had the chicken fajita and friend had the steak fajita. Pretty good. I wasn't a fan of the sides as they were bland. Chips and salsa were ok and they keep those coming. Had a Mexican beer also which was good. The restaurant could use some updating. Our server was friendly. Would I go back? Maybe, but many other places I'd rather go first.

They had lot of vegetarian options! I had the popeye 's enchiladas ! Which was really different and delicious! The first time I had a different flavored enchiladas other than cheese , for vegetarian foodies. The staff were really friendly and kind too!

The inside was clean and bright, our server was attentive and quick. We went in at 3pm and the food came out quickly. The main course wasn't exceptional. I ordered enchiladas and the red sauce seemed like they just heated up the salsa served with chips and poured it over the enchiladas. Beans were kind of dry and rice could've used more seasoning. The fr4ied ice cream though was definitely the highlight of the meal. A huge portion, easily shared between 3-4 people. Not overly sweet and the coating was very crisp. Probably the best I've had. So a good place to watch some sports (they have 2 large flat screens), have some drinks, chips and salsa and possible dessert. For authentic Mexican food, not so much.

We arrived with a group of friends to stay at a local Air BnB and they highly recommended this place. Though it was Sunday night, after I'm sure, was a long weekend -- the service was very good, the food was excellent and it was all reasonably priced. Next time we're in the area, we'll be back. read more

Went in Sunday, July 22, 2018, ordered two chili rellano, queso fundido, burrito loco and had a "margarita," while I waited. 1st and foremost!!!! In hindsight, a Mexican restaurant that serves me Riesling wine with a hint of lime is not--NOT--a margarita, that should have been the first sign. The food was meh, with no authenticity; chili rellanos are supposed to come breaded. Not at Serrano's. Chorizo is pork--not beef. My mother has made more savory meat with Taco Bell packet seasoning and chuck beef. All in all, while this may seem a cultural divergence to fellow Valpos... its far from good and hardly worth the money. read more

I think I have found my favorite Mexican restaurant in Valparaiso. The Burrito Ranchero ( pork), was excellent. Could actually taste the pork. Their guacamole is great , as is their salsa. My husband called the Burrito Loco( steak) , legit. Wait staff is super courteous and the restaurant is clean and welcoming. Will definitely be coming back. read more

Good food but a little expensive. I was expecting an el amigo but it is closer to el salto. The guacamole portion was very small for the price, they mix it with sour cream so it's not as good as it could have been. Service was good, and they were all friendly. Only reason they are getting a 4 and not a 5 is because of the price ($60 for 4). read more

My boyfriend and I quickly became regulars here after they initially opened. Personally, I think they have the best mexican food in Valpo - the cheese dip is awesome and we always get the burrito loco to split. If I come here by myself, I'll usually get the steak fajitas because they are incredible. I didn't even like fajitas until I ate them from here! The staff is always extremely friendly and takes care of us whenever we come in. Would highly recommend stopping by read more

If this is the best Mexican in town, then it's worth leaving town for good mexican. All of us agreed that the food was sweet and tasted like it had a bunch of cinnamon of it. I had the carne asada and pretty forgettable at best. If you REALLY like cinnamon you'll love it though. I won't be in any hurry to return. read more

I am leaving 5 Stars not because it's the best I've ever had (that would be 26th street in Chicago) but THIS is the most AUTHENTIC Mexican food you are going to get in Valparaiso...there are other Mexican restaurants here that are much trendier looking & have fancier dining rooms but the food quality is not there...I advise those locations for Margaritas with the girls type situations, if you are looking for a really great dinner, then Serrano's is for you. They provide chips & salsa when you are seated and it's REALLY good salsa, fresh & slightly spicy...not too hot..you can still see the onion, tomato & cilantro chunks. My husband ordered the steak fajitas which he enjoyed...I had the pick your own combo with rice & beans. The chicken tostada was very good, authentic & piled high with toppings, my only criticism is that the shell couldn't handle all that goodness & broke like crazy when I picked it up. The chicken enchilada was also tasty, I did add some salsa on top because it was a bit dry, but I'm enjoying myself so it's not a big deal. Then I had the cheese filled Chile Relleno....UNBELIEVABLE I had a bite & I was filled with food memories of my youth...it was Amazing...the sauce it swam in brought it to a higher level...it was rich and complex and needed it's own straw!!! Worth 5 stars completely....I am getting a chile relleno dinner next time...Loved it. The rice was good...not as good as mine, but the best I've had in a restaurant in a long time...& I think they make their beans with a bit of chorizo because of the slight red color...very very good...they do not sell liquor right now...just beer & I saw a woman with Sangria....but if your in Valpo...you NEED to pop in...bien provecho!! Our new favorite Mexican restaurant. We eat here at least monthly and I confess sometimes weekly. Everything we have tried is absolutely delicious. The cheesy dip is super yummy. Prices are very reasonble for very big portions. Staff is super friendly and takes great care of their customers. My husband loves the seafood serrano. I love the shrimp tacos or the shrimp quesadilla or the steak burrito or... really I haven't had a bad thing there! Great for take out as well and some restaurants suck at take out. read more

Best tacos I've had yet in Valpo. Super flavorful and fresh. And looking at their menu while i was waiting for my takeout order I regret not trying something different. Great variety. Next time. The house made hot sauce was killer!! Woa. Hot and tons of flavor. The host was very nice and accommodating. They have been in business only a week at the time of this review. I wish them good luck! Amazing food and great service. The owner if this restaurant used to own El Salto and knows how to treat their customers. We were treated to endless chips and dips, fresh food and great service. I tried the shrimp quesadila which was out of this world good. My husband had the chicken mole. He enjoyed it but would like to try something new. You won't be disappointed at Serranos. They know how to make food well and do a good job. Also, try the real coke products from Mexico with the real cane sugar. They are perfect with Mexican food. read more

I love Serranos, it is what the old El Salto was. The manager is Miguel (from El Salto) and he is wonderful. The food is fresh and authentic. Whenever I am in Valpo, I make my first stop Serranos. My 21 month old daughter wolfs down the guac and I the salsa. All the dishes I've had there are super good. read more

Me and my family were on a RV road trip back to CA where we are from, in CA you can find Mexican food as easy as you can find a bottle of water. I have to say this was by far the most delicious Mexican dish I ever had. The Guisado DE Res was to die for, if you can't take the peppers just move them a side and the dish is still full of flavor. read more

Family owned, small restaurant, fresh food, friendly service, and delicious. This is the 3rd time I've eaten here and have yet to be disappointed. Salsa is nice and spicy. My tacos were really tasty. The food came out hot. I will be back upon my return to Valparaiso next summer. read more

Did not enjoy my experience here at all. Seemed like a lot of tables around me were having similar issues, having to send food back, slow service, etc. And the food was not good. Overall disappointing. I'll continue to go to El Amigo across the street for Mexican food! read more

Not only is she waiting tables, she's acting as bartender for her tables, as were the rest of the servers. We found out later that it's the owner's idea to not have a dedicated bartender. Absolutely ridiculous. After she dropped our drinks she took off to a different table. Can we order appetizers? She finally returned, took the app order and then went back to her bartending duties. Cutting to the chase...after we ate our entrees she finally checked back. Way too late to address our concerns about the food. About the menu...way overpriced for what was offered for marginally tasting food. Asked her to divide the check by 3 charging the two couples and the single what was ordered. Big mistake as she tried several times to get it right. Overall it was a bad experience and will not return. Too many options in Valparaiso to settle for this disappointment.

We discussed who was who in which poster and which masks were in our personal collections. I called after looking at menu. .Miguel (sp) took my call and I asked If I could change a little something. "no problem" he said. The food I took home was the best I have had in this area! Everything fresh. I have been looking a mex. place that actually serves PORK, and NOT shredded! well this place had the best pork carnitas I have not had in quite a while. Beans and rice were not dry or greasy, very flavorful. My favorite that I always look for is a good picco de gallo, Fantastic. I usually do not eat the salsa that most rest. serve while you wait. My husband and I dined here for lunch. We came in the late afternoon but there were still a handful of tables with guests dining. Chips and salsa were great (we did get the small side of guacamole but for the size and price I'd say just skip it!). I got a combo platter so I could try their pork, chicken, and steak. All three of my items were delicious. My husband got the Burrito Serrano which included chicken, steak, and shrimp. Typically when he gets burritos we find that they include a lot of filler items - we were blown away at how much meat was actually in the burrito, especially tons of large, delicious shrimp. Everything was great and all of the staff was attentive and friendly. My family and I ate here for the first time tonight. I love burritos, but could not find one on the menu that suited me, so asked for a steak, chicken and shrimp.
