    Pineapple margarita
    Chris M.

The food is 5 stars! Had the Jalisco again and the steak quesadilla. So good!! Healthy portions. First time I ever had a pineapple margarita, delicious. Sat at the bar and the service was ok. Later I realized the bartender had to attend to tables. Cool and comfortable atmosphere.

Wanted Mexican food nearby. This place rocked it tonight!!! Wait time for a weekend was not bad. Got seated promptly and the waitstaff was on point with drinks and food orders. Ordered the guacamole and ceviche! Wow!! Not a disappointment. The main entrees were plentiful and the variety of platters were exceptional. The plates were empty when we were through. The did have horchata which added to the experience! I will revisit this establishment when I visit the area again. The crowd lively and the noise level was not too loud. The crowd was pleased and enjoying their food and the music.

I was in the area and wanted to see what this place had to offer. I was attracted by it at first, but I guess I should have let that curiosity stay as one. My significant other and I were seated fairly fast at a booth. It was comfortable at least, which was good with all the waiting we endured. We were given complementary chips and salsa, luckily. They were okay at best. The chips didn't seem fresh and the salsa had potential, but to me it seemed to be too much like a liquid. It almost appeared as if it was diluted with water. The next chips and salsa we were given weren't any better. Even salt and pepper didn't help either batch we got. When our server finally got to our table, I ordered a Fountain Diet Pepsi for 3.0. This place didn't have a menu for alcohol, so that was a bummer. We ended up getting a Cantarito and a margarita. There wasn't an option for us to get a certain size for either one, but that wasn't a big deal. The Diet Pepsi was served in a big cup, so that was great. Our server took a long time to get me a refill on it. I was glad that they both tasted decent at least. The Cantarito was alright. It seemed to have a little bit too much tequila in it. Unfortunately, I didn't get to keep the cup like I got to in Mexico. The margarita wasn't good. It was bland. It needed a good blast of fresh lime juice in my opinion. We ordered the Guacamole to try. It was 8.5, which was steep. It had Chunky avocado with pico de gallo. It was a decent size and it wasn't too bad. I wouldn't necessarily call it good, either. I ordered the Burrito El Cantarito. It was 14.0, so I was hoping it was going to be worth the price. It had Grilled chicken, steak, chorizo, beans, cheese, guacamole, sour cream, smothered with cheese sauce and topped with avocado. This was really big, but bland. There were so many things inside it, so to be that bland, was odd to me. It wasn't worth the price at all. The service was bad. It didn't seem too busy, so I thought we would have swift service. Our server wasn't attentive. She came off as not wanting to be there. Overall, this place was a fail. I wouldn't want to come back here. Date of visit: 4/25/24

Coming from a Méxicana who has had the best of the best food because of my mom this place is approved ! We love coming to visitChesterton not only because of family but because this place exists! I can tell you that this is where I celebrated my New Years Eve and no it wasn't planned but it just happened that way. We decided to go for the Molcajete which is a MUST! It says on the menu it feeds 2 but uhm no it feeds 2 adults and 2 kids just perfectly! The only thing we added was an extra 2 plates of rice and beans and tortillas for the kids. I ordered a paloma or cantarito one of those 2 but it was so on point guys! It was balanced perfectly and no I did not feel like they were heavy handed because it was New Years. The rim was a bit spicy but so so so tasty! The place is vibrant and reminded me of celebrating New Years with my family back in California with the music I grew up listening to as a kid. I'm the only latina within our party so I know my in laws always take my word when I say the food is delicious! The molcajete is filled to the brim with steak, chorizo, nopal (cactus) 1, chicken fajitas, beans, grilled onions and it feels like you'll never finish but you eventually do. We also had rice and beans. Oh also a stuffed banana pepper and grilled queso! Which is perfect for tacos and your slices of jalapeños. I recommend if you are going to do this dish order it with corn tortillas. I mean the meal was fantastic! The only thing I'd change is add more steak or maybe same amount as the chicken and 1 more nopal. My partner and I weren't finished celebrating so the kids left with their grandparents and we transitioned to the bar to have one more drink and finish watching football. The game was so intense that we made friends others their and Nacho our bartender was simply a delight. I'm not a regular here but hearing how customers treat nacho was very warm and I'm very happy he gets recognized by customers. Honestly a great time here and I'm glad that when I come to Chesterton I know where to get great food!

Veggie fajitas. Corn tortillas are in the foil. Beans on the side.
    Michele Y.

The food was good. As a vegan, I ordered the veggie fajitas. The oil was a bit heavy on the veggies but the combination with the beans and corn tortillas was really nice. My companions ordered enchiladas and quesadillas and both enjoyed their meals. The food arrived unbelievably fast! The staff was friendly too. The mural on the wall and the music had a nice Mexican ambiance.

    Carnitas quesadilla

The food was amazing! My partner and I went for lunch and were disappointed there was no lunch menu. We ordered the chicken soup for $10 and a carnitas quesadilla for $13, appropriate pricing for lunch food. The portions were surprisingly very large and the food was delicious and fresh!! Our server was sadly not super attentive but otherwise had a great experience :)

Burrito El Cantarito with carnitas as the meat and queso blanco on the side! Super delish!

Lemme tell ya somethin, i been going here for over 5+ years, and this place is always consistent in quality! Absolutely love the Burrito n Quesadillas! Staff is always super friendly and the place is always clean!!! Nice and quiet too even when it feels busy!! Drinks are good too!!! 1st time trying it? Highly recommend the Burrito el Cantarito but have carnitas for the meat in it! And this is just a me thing, get the queso blanco on the side. Its easier for me to it and not get queso in my beard Again, place is amazing and not badly priced either especially for the good food! Took my mom here today on 5/10/2024 for lunch around 12 or 1230 and the server guy was awesome to my mom when she was ordering a Modelo. She only wanted a tall of it but he did joke with her about getting a pitcher since it was friday. She absolutely loved it and it made me happy seeing her laugh and smile. Thanks again El Cantarito!

    Kim A.

Oh.my.goodness!! The food was SOOOO GOOD!! Loved the salsa, and every person in our party loved what they ordered. The food came out in a timely matter and was so delicious. I also had the watermelon margarita, and it was great as well. We are only in town for a week, or I'd be back ASAP!

    Tacos De Birria
    Brooke M.

The vibes are immaculate!!! Norteña musica is played throughout, and the food is what I would call authentic-ish. It's as close as you can get while being cranked out hot and fast in a bar in Indiana, you know? Staff is attentive, food is delish, and the margaritas are perfectly strong (and large!) so you'll leave happy and full. I recommend the Tacos de Birria, served with mouthwatering birria consumé. And get the house marg on the rocks with salt, but substitute the house tequila for some reposado; thank me later!

Walked into the sounds of tejano music, so cool! Two seating areas, we chose the bar side, with the festively decorated bar. Mini piñatas and greenery put us into a great mood, lifted our road weary spirits. Ordered two Coronas with lime, we just wanted something light and familiar. Chips and salsa on the house came out with our brews. Simple salsa, but hit the spot. Thick chips, my fav kind. Menus extensive but not Cheesecake Factory crazy. Ordered tacos, since that appears to be a specialty. Steak milanesa, chile relleno, and mashed potato tacos were too interesting not to try. Also ordered the queso, a warm creamy white dip that went nicely with the salsa. Faint bite, so if you like things hot, add one of the hot sauces, which are placed on every table. Super friendly staff all around, always a bonus. Also, place was very clean, all tables neat and wiped down, very nice. Looked around while waiting for our tacos and noticed some great murals on the walls. Also noticed the huge tequila collection behind the bar. Ordered our food in to go containers since we planned to take most back to our hotel. But we had to sample hot first! So all the tacos were good. Beans and rice were simple and authentic, excellent! The mashed potato came in a crispy fried shell, light and delicious. The milanesa was also yummy. But the star was the chile relleno taco! Nice bite and so good! Fun experience at Joe's. Hope we can make it back sometime. Muy delicioso!

I would have enjoyed the lovely patio, but it also looked like it was about to rain! Our server was very nice and gave some excellent recommendations. Instead of chips and salsa, we were served their potato flautas. It was a nice change of pace. I usually fill up on chips and salsa and can't finish my main entree. For the table, my brother ordered a house special entree - Mariscada Valero's - which is a variety of sautéed seafood served with tortillas. It was perfect for sharing with our four person group. For my main dish, I ordered the skirt steak tacos with coconut rice on the side. I love coconut and I love rice. Who knew they go together so well! The skirt steak was cooked perfectly. I had my leftovers for breakfast and the skirt steak was still tender! I did try the lobster tacos (my sister-in-law's favorite). They were yummy - although a bit spicy. Nonetheless, I enjoyed it! Not only is she waiting tables, she's acting as bartender for her tables, as were the rest of the servers. We found out later that it's the owner's idea to not have a dedicated bartender. Absolutely ridiculous. After she dropped our drinks she took off to a different table. Can we order appetizers? She finally returned, took the app order and then went back to her bartending duties. Cutting to the chase...after we ate our entrees she finally checked back. Way too late to address our concerns about the food. About the menu...way overpriced for what was offered for marginally tasting food. Asked her to divide the check by 3 charging the two couples and the single what was ordered. Big mistake as she tried several times to get it right. Overall it was a bad experience and will not return. Too many options in Valparaiso to settle for this disappointment.
