We spent the day in INDY with our grandson for his 5th birthday . After a long day there, we drove back home and we were tired and hungry. Nothing sounded good to the Mrs until I mentioned Mexican food and El Charrito. Boom! Instant winner! We got Quesabirria Dinners and a large order of chips and salsa. Delicious. When we dine in person, the service is great and when we order takeout, the food still has the same quality. You can't say that about a lot of restaurants. I was just hanging out at my brother's and we decided to go get some Mexican food. I looked on Yelp and El Charrito's came up. The restaurant is nice with a good size dining area. We called our order in and it was ready when we arrived. I ordered the loaded nachos; but instead of the nacho chips I got French fries. Our order also included the Fajita taco salad with chicken, 2 taco dinner (soft shell) shredded chicken and 2 Tostadas. Everyone enjoyed their meal. Overall, I give the experience 5 Stars. read more

Very nice place to eat. Quiet seating inside or if you prefer to sit outside they have seating on the deck. The service is great and friendly. The food is fresh, flavorful and cooked well. My 1st order was Enchiladas Mole...FANTASTIC. So...I ordered 1 of everything on Ala Cart. I loved the complex but familiar authenticity of everything. I had a favorite delivery restaurant but I will be ordering from El Charito from now on. I'm starting on the soups next. Always in search of a good Mexican place in NWI, I came across El Charrito by way of a radio promotion coupon. We drove out to Portage to see what they had to offer...I was blown away with flavor, portion size, fair pricing and FAST and friendly service. The complimentary chips and salsa were a hint of good things to come. The steak tacos were very good, the Birria burrito was so tender, juicy and flavorful. Best Flauta I ever had too! Stopped by on a whim on a Monday night.... Had no idea this place was here! Most Mexican restaurants are closed on Mondays, not this place . All of the food was very good . A tad salty but it was very tasty! Prices were very reasonable considering the amount of food you get and the margaritas were on point! Service was excellent As well. Arrived just before 1:30 on a Wednesday afternoon. Was seated promptly as there were just a few people remaining from the Lunchtime crowd. We were provided chips and salsa by our waiter and he got our drinks out to us fairly quickly. When my wife asked about the taste of their birria, he brought out a small sample for her to try. Our service was excellent. Our server was Juan. The place itself is very Hispanic in its decor. Nicely padded chairs and booths. The tables and floors were very clean. They have seating outside as well. We were pleased with the interior space. The chips and salsa were great. In fact, we purchased a large container of them to take home. My wife's burrito with the birria was so good according to my wife. She wants to make this her Mexican place. I had the 3 tacos that were on special this afternoon. I ordered one with grilled chicken, one with meat, and one with pork. I asked for the shell to be crispy. That was maybe a mistake as crispy shells have a tendency to break apart. I would recommend the soft taco shells. I would say the meat taco could have used more seasoning but the other two were very good. The rice was good and the refried beans were tasty. This is hands down our favorite Mexican restaurant in the area! The service is so friendly and the atmosphere is clean and inviting. The food is consistently flavorful and fresh we love the quesabirria (dipping tacos) the Carne Asada meal is a fantastic as well tender juicy and well seasoned. The price and portions are excellent, a great value for the amount of food you receive I usually have leftovers. The Mango Margarita are Delicious and if you are a beer drinker they have a 1.99 beer deal on Thursday, oh and we just found out 2.00 tacos on Wednesday they are Closed Tuesday. read more

We checked this place out on our trip back through Indiana. Our server was very nice and attentive, offered up more chips and sauces. We received our food very quickly. The restaurant was maybe a third full for a Saturday night. I ordered the fajitas, which were decent but not the best I've ever had. There was plenty though. Bigger tortilla wraps would be nice instead of the smaller ones. My wife had the chimichangas, which were also a huge serving. We both took food home. Overall a good experience. read more

Took my family here today for lunch. I don't want to over hype this place. But, being the first person to write a review ...... I feel I need to give some credit where it is due. Service was prompt, and our waitress was very knowledgeable of the menu. (She was the service manager as well) (I forgot her name sorry) I had asked what dish they were known for. (The dish that is pictured up top is what I ordered) and our server said,"This dish had taken 1st place in a local competition!!!" I must say, I was highly impressed. My wife ordered the shrimp cocktail. That dish was fantastic as well. (They add a special ingredient to this, that gave it a very nice twist.) Unfortunately, I will NOT share that special ingredient . You will just have to go find out for yourself. But, it was... SO GOOD!!! My kids (5 &10) liked what they had ordered as well. From the chips and salsa to the main course, hands down some of the best food in NWI. They do have a full bar and the house margarita frozen with salt... I ordered a second. I don't go out to eat much anymore. Because, I feel most places are not up to a quality standard. This place put me into a FOOD COMA!!! The quality was hands down, some of the best cooking I have had in a VERY long time. I will definitely come back to this place with friends. I had heard this place was good. But, I had no idea it was gonna be as good as it was. Bravo!!! Can't wait to try something else on the menu!!! I only wish I took more pictures.
