TLDR: Thomas was great and wanted to get the job done as well as possible. But the business approach of the owner was so off putting that I eventually just asked them to get out of my house even through the job wasn't completely done. Most of the work was well done, with the only exception being a lot of extra damage caused by the crew to the engineered hardwood floor that caused me to have to replace about 150 square feet extra.
The Work: A slow water leak snuck into the walls and spread out across the concrete slab foundation. A crappy job on all accounts.
Thomas made the initial inspection and did an extremely thorough job. I ultimately chose to go with them because Thomas was so attentive and concerned about removing the damaged areas.
They showed up on Monday morning after being hired. Thomas and his guys dug in and ripped out most of the drywall. They found and treated a lot of mold in the walls, etc. They also removed some cabinets and did a great job protecting the countertop so it wasn't damaged. Thomas went above and beyond to try and find all the damage and clean it out, which I really appreciate.
Some trouble arose on the second day when Thomas arrived with a different crew of people, and it was obvious that they were generally didn't know as much of what they were doing. They scored the engineered floor to tear it up (as expected), but over cut all of the damaged areas - meaning instead of leaving a 1 inch or so gap on the edge of a board they were cutting, they cut into the next one. This ultimately resulted in 30+ more boards at 150+ square feet having to be pulled up by the flooring people before they could re-lay flooring.
Business Practice: In my opinion, Mike Rouel, the owner of this company, was the problem, and ultimately the reason I told them to leave. I'd had a good experience with Thomas, and then Mike showed up on day 1. I happened to be in a zoom meeting at the time, and he cornered by wife and told her that we had to file an insurance claim. "This will be a very expensive job," he repeated over and over. She told him that she wanted him to talk to me, but that didn't seem acceptable, and eventually, she had to escape back to the room where her office was set up.
To be clear, from the very start, I had indicated that this would be an out-of-pocket job, with no insurance claim. I said it to Beverly in their office when I spoke to her, and Thomas when he inspected the place. It wasn't a problem for either of them.
Mike came back on day 2 and repeated the same thing to me over and over again. It was about a 20 minute conversation, and by the end of it, I understood the business approach. He wanted me to make an insurance claim so that he could pad the bill as much as possible.
This put me on alert for when I got the 'updated' bill as the job was ongoing. I flagged a couple thousand dollars of extra charges on it, including an entire extra day of equipment rentals. Beverly was very apologetic and quickly got them all fixed, but it's was a sign.
On Thursday (day 4), I was told Mike would be coming by with someone to quote fixing the floor. But by this point, I'd seen the damage they'd caused to the floor, and I wasn't about to trust anyone he brought, and I told them I wanted them to finish getting the water out and leave. Mike showed up again a few hours later. He repeated his frustration about me not filing an insurance claim, but now it was about all the additional work that would still need to be completed, like scraping adhesive off the concrete floor... It would be another 2-3 days worth of work. I told him I'd take care of it (Just to note, I did it myself in 4 hours).
This was when he pivoted to saying that if they were done, I'd need to pay him right there on the spot. I told him I'd be happy to... However I still haven't received an updated quote/bill. I'd been asking for one since Tuesday and still hadn't seen one on Thursday. He backed off of that and said they'd be getting one to me soon.
As a little bit of added insult, on Thursday, I asked for them to come and remove the fans and dehumidifiers from the house on Friday, but was told late Friday they couldn't make it until Saturday... And naturally, they charged me an after hours rate for coming on Saturday. Classy.
But on the bright side, Mike did give me a 20% discount on the quoted rate since I was paying out of pocket. He promised this to me before the job started, and after all of the interactions, I was skeptical it would still be a thing, but in the end, he did, and I appreciate it.
Overall... The job was done. Thomas did good work. I wasn't happy with the floor, but in the midst of a crappy job like this, mistakes can be made, and they were fixed by my flooring people. The shady nature of this was just the owner. He made me not trust the company and be on my guard for over charges. I would not recommend them to a friend, but if you are in a pinch, they can get the job done. read more
