I was super excited that Mission Taco Joint expanded into KC after hearing all my friends from STL rave about it! My friends and I came after ten for their late night happy hour ($2 tacos and tequila shots!). I ordered the beef brisket birria, the Baja fish, and the BBQ duck taco! -beef brisket birria taco: this was my least favorite taco not because of the flavor but because it had the least amount of filling. Otherwise it was delicious and tasted like BBQ in a taco! -Baja fish taco: you can get it grilled or fried! I chose to have my fish grilled and it was pretty good! It tasted like your average fish taco. I loved that they included queso fresco on top! -BBQ duck taco: this was the most intriguing taco flavor wise. The duck has an ancho-agave glaze that was sweeter than I expected. However, when you ate the duck with the pickled onions, it added just the right amount of acidity that the tacos needed. Overall, it was a good combination of sweet and acidic that I enjoyed! I really enjoyed my food here! Even on a Sunday night after ten, the restaurant was still half full. I'm not so sure if I would come here before their happy hour as the portions are smaller than an average taco and more expensive ($3.25-$4), but I will definitely be coming back for late night happy hour! read more

I have been to Mission Tacos several times in the past, and have enjoyed my food each time. The tacos are normally hot and delicious, and each taco is such is unique combination of ingredients that I love! When I went last time, my favorite was the shrimp taco! Yesterday night, however, was a different experience from the past. My friend and I ordered 2 tacos each (me the BBQ Duck and Carne Asada, and her the BBQ Duck and Shrimp), but our tacos were cold and not at all up to Mission Taco's standard. The Carne Asada meat was also extremely dry and not at all tender, which was a huge disappointment. The atmosphere at the restaurant is wonderful, with booths, regular tables, high tables, and a bar with two TVs to watch a game! Unique art is displayed on the walls and one wall is taken up by a floor-to-ceiling mural. The best part about Mission Tacos is their late night happy hour, with $2 tacos and tequila shots after 10 p.m.! It's hard to beat that price, and I will be back again in hopes of redeeming the experience I had last night! read more

I've been coming into Mission Taco for a few years now and I've always very much enjoyed the atmosphere, food and drinks. I still very much like the drinks and the food is good .....BUT.... something has happened ever since they reopened full time from the COVID partial shutdown and now all of their tacos are spicey. I used to always get the portobello and then either a pork or beef taco. The beef always had a slight kick to it but it has really ramped up. The portobello taco was NEVER spicey before and I've ordered it three times now since covid and even asked "hey, can you leave off whatever hot sauce you've been putting in there" and the last one I got was almost too hot for me to eat......I swear the recipes have to have changed. All that said - it's still very tasty, but I really am not a spicy foods kind of person and sadly, the tacos I used to really like from this place aren't a thing anymore. But if you love great tacos with a good spicy kick - this is the place to go! read more

This is hands down the best "non street food" taco place in Kansas City. Don't get me wrong; there is a HUGE difference between a culinary taco and a street taco. We tried this place for lunch on a Saturday. There was no wait time so we were seated right away. Service: we had to wait about 10 minutes before our waitress came to our table to greet us. After she did though everything went smoothly and prompt. The staff are friendly and very visible. Atmosphere: I love the decor. Modern rustic. Great colors, clean and happy. Drinks: we were boring this time and just stuck with water. They have a good drink menu thought and a full bar. Food: chips and salsa were good. They bring out two salsa's, one is a mild pablano and the other a hotter habanero. Both were delicious. I ordered the chicken flautas were delicious! The presentation was great too. They had a little kick to them but nothing unbearable. The texture was good, they were lightly crunchy not too hard which is perfect to me. The chicken inside melted in my mouth. It wasn't chewy or over cooked at all. My husband had three tacos, the carne asada taco was ok, just kind of bland, not much flavor. The fish taco was fried and delicious. The chorizo taco was spicy with bold flavors. The churros were not the best. The texture was fine but not really much cinnamon and sugar coating. Tacos, Margs, Fries...is there anything better?! Mission taco was the perfect place to get a Monday margarita and some tacos. Great atmosphere, we were seated right away and the garage doors were open, giving us a nice breeze of the beautiful weather. The service was great and the food was so goooood! Very...meh. I truly dont get the hype. This place is soooooo expensive. Service was fine, except our server reeked of smoke. She didn't even get super close to me and I could smell her a good 18 inches away, that's disgusting and needs to be fixed. It truly ruins your appetite. I hate places where you have to pay for chips and salsa, I really do. But they were ordered, as well as the queso. Both salsas were pretty good, unique, and flavorful. Chips were good, nothing special, but that isnt bad. The queso....pretty bland. One of the worst I've tried. I could see the chorizo...but I couldn't taste the chorizo. The whole dish was super mild, no spice at all. For both queso and salsa it was over $10. Which to me is insane. I ordered a duck taco and...can't even remember the other one. Probably steak. That's how not memorable they both were. For the price-over $3 per taco, they are skimpy on the filling. Maybe a tablespoon of meat in each one. The ducks pickled onion,or whatever the pink thing was, was a bigger amount than the actual duck was. The other one had a lot of green, which wouldve been fine had there been more meat. My date did enjoy everything about his burrito. However he could only finish half and was leaving town later that day, so I took the rest home. Ate it no problem the next day,few hours later had terrible stomach cramps the rest of the night. It was the only meal I had that day so....I'm going to assume the burrito is what caused it. We had tons of chips and salsa leftover,since our food came out really fast, our server didnt bring a bag over for them for me to take home when she brought the box for the burrito. I had to ask for one and cups for salsa too. There was a good 3/4s left of both salsas and chips. I would get not wanting to have people take it to go if they were free but since they cost a lot, of course I'll take them home vs throw them away. DO NOT EAT HERE! $4,000 DENTIST BILL AS A RESULT I used to eat here regularly and loved the food...but will no longer be returning. Recently I ordered a New Years Resolution burrito to go. (contains black beans) While eating the burrito I full-force bit down into a piece of gravel (I assume it was missed while sorting through the whole beans - very common) and it ended up cracking three of my teeth. Mission taco took over 6 weeks to finally get back to me about the incident only after I had called them 5 different times...and was never able to talk to the general manager. They have refused to pay for me to get my teeth fixed leaving me with a $4,000 dentist bill. But for some reason they sent me a gift card (I assume this was because they know they're at fault and trying to keep me happy...) 0/10 would not recommend unless your jaw to hurt and your wallet to hurt more. read more

The restaurant had a very chill atmosphere. The service was quick and the bartender was friendly! The chips and salsa come with 2 salsas (one spicy/one mild) which were really good & fresh! We had the shrimp mango-nero, carne asada, chicken guisedo & yucatecan pork tacos, all of which were bomb af. We also had the spicy margarita and their signature margarita which were ok. We appreciated the fact that the sour was fresh and not overly sugared, however we judge Mexican places harshly by their margaritas lol nothing to rave about honestly. Every old building is being renovated and the city is being redefined monthly. I'm from CA where we eat California burritos with seasoned carne Asada, French fries and killer hot sauce. I ordered the brah-rito. First thought was burrito is a bit smaller then Cali. After cutting open. Carne asada is actually steak. The pieces are too thick and seasoning is lacking. It's harder to eat then flank steak and just really missing the level of a Ca burrito. We also got the chorizo and duck tacos. Tortillas fresh, and meat tender. Chorizo is good, but I feel like it's a breakfast taco. The duck tack is sweet, tender good taco. I love the hot sauce, it's spot on CA style. And Dre n TuPac on the beats you cannot go wrong. Great spot in KC, the area is pretty interesting but this place is great! I really enjoyed the shrimp taco the most, I felt like it had the most flavor. The mango and slaw made this my favorite hands down. I am not even sure they do this, but a flour tortilla instead of corn might be a really good switch up! Edit: manager reached out fast and she was more than kind. She is looking into the bad service and apologized for our bad service. Service was horrible and the server literally told us I have another table to help and walked away in the middle of the conversation about how they messed up our order. We were wanting to order a street taco and she says "this is not a street taco place so don't try to make your taco a street taco." When the food came and we clearly stated we want the steak well done and it came medium. We stated the food is not well done and the server goes " oh I get it you dont want your meat pink" with an attitude. All we ask is for our order to come out right and that didnt happen and they made it sound like we were bothering them. Never again to this horrible place. I used to love this place but they've either tweaked the recipes for all their tacos or they've hired cooks who just love everything to be flaming hot - but every taco they make now has at least a quarter of a cup of this blazing hot chipotle sauce on it and it's unbearably spicy. This only started happening after they re-opened from Covid - and I've asked multiple times for them to omit the chipotle spice and they keep saying "we don't add a spicy sauce" Yes you do!!! I've eaten the exact same tacos from the exact same place dozens of times before the Covid shutdown and they were delicious but now I can't eat a single one without snot pouring out of my nose and my shirt getting sweat soaked due to how freaking spicy you're making it. I get that a lot of people love that stuff but I have an actual taste pallet and I don't require my food to be blazing hot to be able to enjoy it. Please offer a non spicy option if this is what your standard is going to be from now on. I keep ordering hoping one day I'll get a taco from mission taco that tastes like it did pre-Covid but it keeps getting hotter. But I mean, really, just read the first sentence again and then decide to go check it out. I went here on a hot Saturday in June with some friends. I hadn't ever heard of it and had 0 expectations. Everything I had was amazing. My drink, my tacos, and the dip were all fantastic. It was incredibly loud inside, but otherwise a perfect dinner. I would happily go again. After I posted my initial review of Mission Taco the manager reached out and encouraged us to give them another shot. We had a much better experience and were happy that we returned. We both got a couple of cocktails, which were very good. My boyfriend got the Painkiller and I got Pandora's Lunch Box. We skipped the guac this time and I decided to give the grilled fish tacos another shot. They were delicious! My boyfriend got the South Beach chicken burrito which was delicious and a good deal for $10. We both agreed that they must have been having an off night on our first visit because this experience better matched most other friends' reviews of this place. Really enjoyed our meal here! We stopped in on a Sunday evening with both kids in tow. We were seated quickly and our waitress was very friendly. We started with an order of chips and salsa. My 13 year old, who normally is not a fan of chips and salsa (I know...I know.), actually fell in love with the salsa here. He was correct, as it was very delicious. My kids had the Baja Fish taco and the Mango-Hop-Anero Shrimp Taco. Our waitress suggested the sauce on the side of the shrimp taco since it was spicy and the kids might not enjoy it. Good call! They like spice, but it would have been too much for them. I ordered the Cali Burrito. It's a vegan burrito made with the Impossible Burger and vegan cheese. This thing was a beast! Perfect use of the Impossible Burger. I would definitely order it again. My husband ordered the seasonal tacos which contained salmon. He ate them quickly and didn't offer to share, so I'm guessing they were good. Food is served family style. Our rice and beans came out in large bowls for sharing and the tacos are all served on one plate in a metal taco holder thing. Makes for easy sharing with the table. Ok, I have kinda high standards for Mexican food cause I'm Mexican and this place was legit. Definitely not like what I would call homemade, at least not my family from Puebla homemade but very good in its own right. We had the black refried beans--super yummy, great portion. Ate that with the chips from the chips and salsa (both salsas were delicious and not what I would call traditional--great flavor). Got three tacos for there and three to go. Haven't eaten my to go tacos yet (Chorizo, chicken, and duck) but the ones I had there were really good. Carne asada: meat cooked perfectly, sauces and flavor were on point, super delicious, will get every time. Baja fish: the fish was cooked a little too well done but everything else was perfect; would order again, but next time would send back if cooked too much. I ordered my lunch to be delivered through Door Dash from this place. I was very disappointed with the size and quality of the Mango Hop Anero shrimp taco and the Baja Fish taco. The pictures on the menu looked like nice size portions but when they were delivered, I thought my Door DAsher had forgotten something. They looked the size of small street tacos. There were 4 pieces of small shrimp in the shrimp taco and a fish stick in the fish taco. Not worth the price and didn't taste good either. Delivery is always pricey, but $17 for that??? Happy hour is the best! They have one every night 10pm- closing. The atmosphere is a bit loud but it's the lively kind of vibe. Went with a friend to grab a late night dinner. No wait on a Tuesday! I don't believe they participate in any Taco Tuesday deals but their prices are not too bad to begin with. It was a busy place though, our waiter was working hard and thanked us for being patient. As always chips and salsa are a must (not included), the green salsa was my favorite our of the two. I enjoyed the Brah'ritto and it was huge! I had just half and will save the rest for leftovers. Very good, a different flavor than what I normally choose in my burritos. I first tried Mission taco while living in St. Louis and was surprised to see that it had expanded into Kansas City. I've actually over ever been during their reverse happy hour after 10 pm because all their tacos are 2 dollars which is an awesome deal. I think for 3.50 normal price it's a little too expensive for tacos, especially when you can get authentic, flavor packed tacos in the KC area for super cheap at less known local restaurants. The tacos at mission taco are tasty. They're not 'out of this world' but they do have a nice flavor profile across the tacos. My favorite ones are the shrimp and chicken tacos. The shrimp one is very light and has a more asian inspired flavor palette while the fried chicken one has a more savory profile. The tacos here are decent sized too. I would say the best bang for your buck would be to go during reverse happy hour! Overall, good vibes and above average tacos. read more

Tacos are always a good idea, right? It's hard to go wrong with a simple street taco with good ingredients, but if you're looking for something a bit wilder, this is the place. These are "West Coast style street fare," so come for the generous portions and funky flavors. The Portabello, Brisket, and Spicy Chorizo were all a hit with me, and the Carne Asada not bad either. For your average lunch, two tacos plus some chips and salsa or guac are plenty filling for me. I haven't tried much else, but I can imagine this would be an excellent happy hour spot for sharing some margaritas and sides (Carne Asada fries, I'm looking at you). I also appreciate the number of veggie options, from tacos to sides like a grilled vegetable quinoa. This place is walkable from my office, and placing carry orders has been efficient and easy, which I appreciate. It's a hip atmosphere inside, but not too noisy.
