This is a 3.5 Stars overall rating that is reluctantly rounded up to 4 Stars instead of rounding down. They are not as meh as a 3 Stars; they are not as good as 4 stars, either. If this was in the US or elsewhere, I would give them three stars. I have learned that in Portugal, plainly cooked seafood is the norm. Sete Mares is located across from a hotel with a ton of tourists from out of the country. Their guests are a mix of locals, business partners, and tourists like me. We arrived without a reservation. After a few moments, we were seated just fine. Service is reserved but also 'commanding' with 'you should try this and that'. I am considering it as language difference. No biggie. The restaurant is sizeable with loads of seafood on display - very classic Portuguese style. The Food: Shellfish Bisque, 3.45€ - 3.5 Stars Shellfishy, somewhat bland, but also somewhat tasty, with several housemade croutons. It's good for a bit of warmth in the tummy. Sole A-Là-Meunier, 32.95€ - 4 Stars This preparation is French style, sauteed in butter and served with lemon. The fish is cooked just right. Hubby liked the lemony butter flavor. Grouper Grilled with Potatoes and Vegetables, 28.95€ - 3.5 Stars The grouper itself is cooked just right. The flavors are nonetheless lacking and too simple overall. But I did enjoy the quality of the fish itself. read more

What a great way to have our last meal in Lisbon. We have good food throughout our stay in Lisbon, but Sete Mares was exceptional! We had Seafood Bisque, toasted butter bread, special goat cheese, and Sea Bass. All were so delicious. In particular, the Sea bass was cooked to perfection. In addition, our waiter was attentive, knowledgeable, and a pleasure to be around. We ate at a leisurely pace and never felt rushed, The atmosphere was pleasant and relaxed. read more

First time here and we will definitely be back. I ordered the sea bass and it was flaky, flavorful and absolutely delicious! Even better yet, Victor, our waiter was very knowledgeable and friendly. He served my sea bass on my plate then pressed down on the fish, scooped up the oil and drizzled in on the fish and potatoes and said "that's how you eat this sea bass." This restaurant is extremely delicious and the service is amazing. Definitely coming back before leaving Lisbon.

We had to make an early night of it, so my wife and I checked in with two friends to Sete Maris at about 6 PM. The place was nearly empty with only one table occupied. Nevertheless, the waiter asked us if we had a reservation, and when we said we did not, his eyebrows rose as though he had to decide whether or not to seat us. One of our guests said, "we may not have a reservation, but you do have tables open." He reluctantly led us to a table and gave us menus. We asked him whether it would be possible to divide the check, and he responded that there would be no problem. I ordered salted, grilled cod, and my wife had the grilled grouper. The food was good, the fish was fresh and tender and the vegetables were prepared nicely. When the time came for the check, we rounded the amount up to provide for a tip and asked to split the check in half. The waiter agreed, and we signed the credit card receipt. We we were ready to leave, but as we turned to exit the waiter said, "You know it is customary to tip at least 10% but you haven't done that. But if that's what you want to do. . ." He shrugged. We left the restaurant, but I couldn't help feeling as though he we trying to squeeze us a bit. The food was fine, not excellent, but certainly acceptable. Yet the discomfort we felt will keep us from returning to Sete Mares, and I cannot recommend this restaurant. read more

This restaurant was recommended to us on multiple trips to Lisbon and we finally made it. The seafood menu is large and many shellfish items can be ordered by the pound and are brought in but vats to the table. They have large tanks housing enormous lobsters and spider crabs, and ice tanks with beautiful fresh fish. Server was very friendly and quite funny and entertaining. We had a great bottle of local Sauvignon blanc for 25€, and he brought buttered, grilled toast and fresh cut cured ham to the table right away. Both of these were excellent. All three of us had grilled grouper, it was perfectly fresh, I thought mine was a hair over cooked which was disappointing. The veggies that came with it were very nice (broccoli and boiled potatoes). Recommend a drizzle of olive oil over everything and waiter brings oil and vinegar to table as a normal item. There were definitely locals dining in here and it was a great experience, they just lost a few points on the cooking of the fish. read more

Since we early and a little jet lagged came to the restaurant around 8pm, which is way too early for locals, hence no need for reservations. The first thing that catches your eye when you enter is the big lobster tank; it is impressive. They have menus in English which is always good and while we perusing the menus for served some Jamon Iberico education was good. I got the seafood bisque as a starter which was very salty with only 3 pieces of shrimp followed by the local speciality - Bacalhau à Brás which is a mix of cod fish, shredded potatoes and eggs with olives. Had a local with me and she additives the taste. It was surprised filling, didn't look big but has some calories. Rounded the meal with some caramel desserts which were a little too sweet for my liking. read more

Read as 3.51. We had dinner here tonight. It was recommended by our tour guide today after Alan asked her for restaurant suggestions and he made 7:00 reservations. It's a short walk across the street from our hotel. Lisbon drivers are extremely polite about yielding to pedestrians in crosswalks, or about to cross the street. It must be the law, because I observed it repeatedly and experienced it tonight. We walked in to the restaurant. Straight ahead was the smoking section and to the right was the bar and the nonsmoking portion of the restaurant. A gigantic tank w/ lobsters and other crustaceans dominates the entry to the main room. We were greeted and Alan's name crossed off the reservation list. We were first led to a back room that had one other party, a large and noisy group whose table stretched the length of the back wall. They were celebrating a birthday and it would have been impossibly noisy there. Actually, it already was. We were reseated in the main dining room and it was quieter. I have no idea why the person who seated us there thought it would be suitable. We were given menus. Prices ranged from €110 or more for crustaceans to more affordable prices in the €20 or less range for other seafood or meat. Alan had had lunch so he was less hungry than I was. They brought a plate of toasted bread w/ butter. It was tasty and most welcome. He contemplated ordering grouper then decided on a shrimp omelet, which would be lighter. I wanted lamb chops. We decided to share a mixed salad and a side of sauteed broccoli. When we ordered the waiter looked concerned, checked and confirmed that they were out of lamb. That always annoys me when it happens and it generally takes me a while to decide on a second choice. Right below the lamb was a dish of fried pork and clams. That sounded interesting and unusual, so I ordered it. I asked for the wine list and it was given to me. Given my unfamiliarity w/ Portuguese wines I needed some guidance. I asked the waiter when he returned about wines by the glass. He said they had house wines by the glass and asked whether I liked red or white. When I said red, he brought me a glass. It was a generous pour and delicious. When I checked the bill later I saw it was less than €4. Alan's omelet came w/ fries. Evidently so did my dish. He asked that they not be salted and that they be cooked crisp. They weren't salted, but they also weren't crisp. They were good enough. My dish was very good, redolent of garlic and more pan fried, which I prefer, than deep fried. The broccoli was very tasty and the salad was large and very good, w/ tomatoes that looked pale but had good flavor, thin slices of sweet onion and grated carrot mixed w/ lettuce and dressed w/ a nice vinaigrette. Alan liked his omelet. Midway through dinner we started smelling smoke drifting in from the smoking section, which put a bit of a pall on our experience. We were brought dessert menus and briefly ordering fruit, of which there was an extensive selection, but realized we were too full, so we paid and left. read more

Not wanting to walk a long way to dinner for a second consecutive night, I asked the concierge at the Corinthis Hotel for a "casual, walkable" restaurant suggestion. He instantly suggested Sete Mares and was on the phone making reservations before I had a chance to quiz him. So, we opted to go ahead. Hey, we love seafood anyway. Well, let me first of all say it is an odd place, a strange entrance that doesn't have a focal point or a reception table to indicate you have a reservation or need a table for two, or whatever. Not sure how that works. We were seated somehow and given an English menu (yay!) and looked for something to order. It's expensive. I saw entrees on there for 115 euros, 82 euros.... Individual entrees. Now, my idea of "casual" NEVER includes items with that kind of price range. My wife chose the clams and that was a tasty choice. I opted for the whiting and it was plain disgusting. It was served like someone took the whole fish and cut off full slices like they were cutting a loaf of bread. So on my plate was a circle of fish with huge skeletal content (not tiny pin bones but a huge skeletal section). And it tasted horrible!! 2 weeks in Europe and this was by far the worst meal of the trip. Not even close. Stay away. read more

This was recommended to us by the hotel we stayed in, the Corinthia hotel, which is right across the street. We arrived early and were told that they were sold out of all but two kinds of fish -- grouper and sea bass. Since 90% of the menu items are fish, this was disappointing. The grouper was fresh-ish, but quite frankly if you live near any coast anywhere you can probably get fish that is fresher than what they had on offer. Although the entree prices appear low, you will be each be charged around 5 euro for bread (although the bread does have real melted butter on it and is pretty good). Plus whatever you buy for water. Others have complained that the service sucks and the waiters are rude, but we didn't experience that. Our waiter was not effusive, to be sure, but we're not the type of people who want to be best friends with our server. The table service wasn't deficient in any way. In all, it ends up being a lot more expensive than many other places in Lisbon that are much much better so pass on this one. read more

We came here on a recommendation from a local and was disappointed. We ordered the grouper and the suckling pig and both were passable. The service was slow and painful. It was highly recommended by our concierge at the Sheraton and I have to say that this was the best meal ever in Lisbon. The service is impeccable and the staff very friendly. This place is conveniently located if you stay at the Corinthia hotel. But if you know 'good' seafood in Lisbon, don't expect it here. This is a restaurant not to be missed!!! Eat with the locals. The staff, the patrons-- everyone is friendly and helpful. We ate lunch here and liked it so much that we returned for dinner.
