I recently visited SET Salon in the Miracle Mile area. While the space itself is beautiful and the receptionist, Tatiana, was very sweet, I was surprised by the lack of hospitality for a salon of this caliber. I wasn't offered a beverage or anything to help me feel welcome while waiting--something I've come to expect at upscale salons. More concerning was the lack of attention to basic service standards. I wasn't draped during my appointment, which resulted in my uniform getting wet and dirty ( I'm a Nurse). It felt like an implied disregard for my appearance and overall comfort. Imagine that paying over $200 for your hair service which lasted 3.5 long hours and not one single person offer you something to drink! When I brought this up discreetly to the salon manager in hopes of providing constructive feedback, she responded defensively by calling and complaining to the owner Nesha. While the salon has potential, my overall experience was deeply disappointing. My future appointments were suddenly canceled after sharing my feedback LOL! I hope the management reconsiders how they handle client feedback and prioritizes respect and professionalism moving forward. read more

I came to get a keratin treatment. I had a great experience. My appointment started pretty much on time and the lady wasn't trying to take other clients at the same time like other salons do. I was in and out really fast and my hair looked great. I love that they keratin treatment they use doesn't have formaldahyde and it still relaxed my hair! I also ended up getting a hair cute. My stylist was personable and friendly. They aren't inexpensive, it it was worth the price. I'll be coming back here! read more

I'm a bit disappointed because I wanted to get my hair done for my birthday in April so I made an appointment in early February. They reached out mid-March to tell me I needed to come in for a consultation first which was fine so we set up an appointment for that. A few days later they cancelled my original hair appointment because I hadn't had the consultation yet. I still don't understand why not having my consultation yet would've ever made me change my mind about wanting to get my hair done. At this point there was no more openings for a couple of months, but I was hoping we'd sort it out when I went in for the consultation. They ended up charging me $25 for the consultation even though the website says it's free and the conversation was like 3 minutes with the hairstylist and all we discussed was that I wanted highlights. I booked a wash n set, blowout and root touch-up with Lauren.The only reason that I'm giving two stars is because the blowout looked beautiful and she did an excellent color service. Now the bad, If you are a curly girl who mostly wears your hair curly and cares about the integrity of your curl pattern, DO NOT get your hair straightened here! Before we even started, I asked her about heat protection and expressed to her how important it was that I don't leave with heat damaged hair. I even asked how many passes she does with the flat iron. She reassured me that 90+ % of their clients wear both curly and straight and not to worry. I only straighten my hair twice a year, and rarely have experienced any heat damage. I now have sections of my hair that are bone straight and won't even curl in the middle, ends and roots of my hair. I want to cry!!! I work so hard to keep my curls in tact. I'm seriously contemplating chopping most of it off, because the damage can't be undone. It looks crazy. My hair is like 60 different lengths now. I'm aware that there is always a risk of heat damage when straightening your hair, but this is ridiculous! read more

I don't know what it is about me that screams "provide this girl with shitty customer service" but whatever it is, it was screaming at the top of its lungs every time I showed up at sets salon. Even though I showed up to every appointment on time with the requested face mask and cash for my payment. Even though I always tip 20 to 25%, I got nothing but a stank, off putting attitude from Tamara. After my last appointment where she scratched my forehead seemingly on purpose, I swore that I wouldn't go back but this place is relatively convenient and I need a place to get my hair done that isn't a 45 minute drive away. I don't need to like you or think you're pleasant as long as you're doing my hair properly, but what I won't stand is my time being wasted and ways the other customers time is not. If I arrive at my appointment on time and you're 20 minutes from finishing straightening someone's hair, I don't mind sitting at the bowl and waiting while you finish your previous client's hair. But when I'm getting MY hair straightened at the end of my service and someone walks in, instead of making them wait the 20 minutes I had to wait while you finish my hair, now I ALSO have to sit with my hair half straightened while you wash and roller set the new client that just walked in? And when I ask you about it, I get the classic stink attitude from Tamara that I've been getting for the last few services? I'm done. read more

I went to get my hair done and I absolutely loved it. I got a blonde balayage which I was nervous about because I have never been blonde. Laura did my hair and it turned out beautiful. I love there roller set technique to straighten hair because it kept my curl pattern healthy after I was done wearing it straight. I also got a Olaplex treatment to make sure my hair stayed healthy during the coloring process. The new hair style gave me the confidence I needed after I had been going through a hard time. After a few months of not getting my hair pressed my sister told me about Sets Salon. You don't often find salons in LA that know how to do a proper wet set and use minimal heat to achieve straight, healthy tresses. I no longer have that issue because my hair is no longer dehydrate and sucking up every bit of moisture the air will give. Lastly, my hair has responded positively to the treatment it is currently receiving. Overall, the salon is the bomb! Few Notes: if you call after 2 you will most likely receive the answering machine. I wouldn't recommend this salon. It's very expensive relative to other traditional Dominican salons ($120+ for a wash, set and blow dry) and my hair did not look good either of the times I left the salon. I could have spent more time coaching my hairstylist Tamara on how to take care of and style my hair but she was clearly extremely defensive and not open to feedback. Ultimately I knew that getting her to adapt her practices wasn't going to be worth the headache and for the price, would prefer to find someone who doesn't need to be coached on how to do a proper roller set. I also was expecting more of a "luxury" experience given the cost. The salon does not look premium or high-end. For now, I'll be returning to Dominican HairStyling which is half the price and they don't appear to throw a fit if you try to direct them in you preferences. read more

I made an appointment last week for the Tuesday special ($25 for a wash,set and root blow-out). I quickly found out that it would not be enough to get the style I wanted due to my hair type. However their prices are really reasonable! I'm 100% natural. Kinky-Curly 4A/4B hair. I haven't straightened my hair in over 2 years so I was a bit unsure of what to expect. My stylist was Nesha and she was absolutely AMAZING! I had shown her a picture of a vintage pin-up girl hairstyle I wanted for graduation and she delivered flawlessly. Lucila did my hair and she is AMAZING. There are no other words for this. My hair was absolutely damaged from a half done relaxer and previous damage from another stylist that I've been working to redeem for a long time. Lucila sat me down, looked at my hair, and knew exactly what I needed. She was very efficient, very friendly, and her technique was what I grew up with and worked great on my hair. She fixed my relaxer, cut my damaged hair off and now my hair is flourishing beautifully. I got a steam treatment and it was the best decision ever. So I definitely recommend that. The gentlemen that manages the front is absolutely incredible. He makes everyone in there feel comfortable and he ensures that they're having a good experience. He checks on you every so often and offers refreshments. He makes sure your head is okay in the drier, he makes sure you don't feel pain, he's friendly and completely makes the place a better place. My regular stylist was out of town so I decided to try Sets Salon again. It's been soooo long since I was last at the salon (formerly Dominican Elegance). The stylist I use to see a long time ago (Provi) seems to not be there any longer BUT I had to pleasure of being taken care of by Sia who actually did my hair at another Dominican salon in the past. After she took out my rollers and started to blow dry my hair I remembered how much I love her technique. She is truly lovely and does a great job at smoothing the roots! As much as I loved the way my hair looked when Sia was finished, I must say I will come back only when my regular stylist is out of town or too busy. The reason for this is my total for my services was more than I expected but that is my fault for not asking how much the oxygen steam treatment and blow dry would be. It would have to be a very special treat for myself. It was nice to be back and see Kalvin. He is truly a kind soul and very helpful. read more

The salon was okay. I went during the tuesday special no one was there. I have natural hair and the hairdresser told me it was only for relaxed and it won't be bone straight. I said let's do it anyway. I should have heeded her warning. She was pretty rough with my hair, and used a fine tooth comb to go at my dry hair. I had to tell her to stop get my hair wet and use a widetooth comb. She seemed annoyed that my head was too curly and would take a while to do it right. Understandable, but when I'm the only one in your shop, you should be able to take your time and not pull my hair out with a rattail comb. i was looking for a new way to wear my hair so she basically lost a customer interested in weekly services.. In the end my hair was stretched, still a bit wet and had kinky roots. I didn't expect much and was fine paying the 30 for it, because i probably couldn't do better myself. I agree with the earlier poster who this place was for people with curly and not kinky, coily hair. I also didn't give any more than two stars because even though my hair is nappy I know i can achieve a decent roller set. She didn't really bother to try. read more

Its very clean, no ear blasting level music, and no one selling dvd's, cd's, incense, or other things I don't feel like being bothered with at the salon. They always explain each product they are using in your hair, ask permission to deviate from the original plan, and make sure that you are comfortable. I'm from NY and went in for a roller set, but due to my hair's condition a blow out was better they said, and it came out bouncy, shiny, and beautifully straight without being fried. I am very, very happy to have found a salon who genuinely cares about healthy hair, and would recommend this salon to Black women who are trying to transition to natural too! read more

I'm am currently sitting under the dryer on my second visit. A wash and set. Yes you get free wifi. Yes you get awesome service. Yes they ask if you would like coffe, tea, or water. Yes Provis hands are gentle during chemical applications, and washes. Yes your hair will look flawless. Yes you should schedule an appointment. Finding a Dominican hair salon is tough. If you're from the east and are used to the blow dry AND flat iron, you won't get it here. You also won't be ignored when you walk through the door. I've now gone to Dominican Elegance twice. I plan on going every two weeks. This is no Lounge on Wilshire... But this is just right for my budget and desire to wear my hair straight for awhile instead of my krinkly-kinky look. And then because she doesn't use straightening combs but a roller set, blow out of the roots and a flat iron over it all...my hair should still bounce back to curls. Yet my hair is straight and still thick looking. It is usually bone straight when it is hot combed. She charges $37.00.The last time i went she charged me an additionally $10 for a trim. I loved her trim because she asked me if i wanted to do one inch or two inches prior to chooping it off. I really needed two inches off. spent almost 2.5 hours there as as opposed to five hours at the Lounge on Wilshire. I will go back to the Lounge when I can afford $150-$175 for hair smoothies and sitting in Riza's chair. I hope my hair can stay healthy straight if I get it done every two weeks. I parked around the corner.this place isn't exactly like Dominican spots in Harlem but it's better and cheaper than other places out here, good products, promotes oils and isn't afraid of thick hair. Just had my wash/set /blow on Saturday 1/29, as a Dominican raised and living in LA let me just say it was nice to be 'home'!! Can be packed on Sat. so try to go early and take advantage of their early opening time. I have mid-length hair (middle of my back), natural and got my ends trimmed etc..so paid on the higher end +tipped, but I would say their prices are reasonable for the quality, attention and products they use. I'm sure the NY transplants will be looking for the upper west side $15-17 deal which I miss too, but the products are not the same, so please dont try to bargain with the ladies - $25 Tuesdays are good enough when strapped for cash I think :) My only personal quirk was that I was expecting to hear a 'lil bit of bachata or perico but only American music was played; at least mix it up and introduce LA to the beautiful Dominican culture as well while we sit and have our tresses done to perfection - wepa! read more

This place is like an old time beauty salon. Its small and intimate and we share great conversation. Last time I was in the salon we had mimosas - MIMOSAS!!! I promised that next time I go I'll bring ingredients to make bellinis :) As if the atmosphere wasn't enough...Provi (hairdresser extraordinaire) LOVES HAIR!! I have a lot of hair and NEVER have I gone into a beauty salon and had someone looking forward to beautifying my hair, someone who can tell how much my hair has grown, and giving me tips on keeping my hair luscious even when I'm on a five day crash diet. ...and did I mention, my hair has never before looked SO good! Kim Kardashian's hair aint got nothing on mine when Provi's worked her magic. Dominican Elegance is a super wonderful salon, a dream come true in a sense. I wish I could keep this place to myself, but the world really does need to know about Provi's awesomeness. Being a new LA resident I rushed over to this place the minute I found it on Yelp and saw the great reviews! Being from NY finding a good hair place that does wash and sets is pretty much impossible living in other regions of the country! I go every week and they are the best! You are greeted very nicely and offered a beverage. Another plus is there is 2 hour meter parking and the Von's parking lot across the street (I get paranoid about parking in there lol so I just park on the street and pay the meter).
