I found my thrill on Blueberry Hill, y'all!!!!! I was referred to Dexter by a friend and I haven't turned back yet. He does a great job and I get nothing but compliments every time he does my hair. Since I wear my hair naturally, I only visit him for special occasions and when I can no longer tame the beast. He always remembers me and greets me with a hug. But he also is fine with the fact that I just want to read. He also doesn't seem to mind that I ask a LOT of questions and he happily shares the names of the products that he uses. The atmosphere is relaxed and very much like a family reunion of family members who like each other. It is obvious that the stylists here have known their clients for years. I've been going to The Den Salon since 2005 and sporadically since 2008 when I decided to put my hair in protective styles (braids, twists, etc). This salon is truly a gem in the sea of uncertainty with stylists in Los Angeles. Dawn Ross is the person that styles my hair. I've reluctantly tried like two other hair stylists in the area and I have yet to find someone else can get it as straight and a smooth as she can. My hair is so smooth when I come out of the salon that it feels and looks like I had a relaxer on my naturally curly (3c/4a) mane. She also cares about my hair's health and was among the first people who told me that I did not need a relaxer. I never had a big chop moment when I transitioned out of my relaxer but she made my hair still look good with the relaxed ends blending the the natural ends with a press n' curl. read more

I am reviewing my first visit to den salon. I was lucky enough to get an 8 a.m. appointment on a Saturday. When I called to make the appointment Dawn was extremely accommodating. She does work on multiple customers at a time, however she is extremely efficient and got me in and out. My main goal is to get my hair in a healthy state, I had a lot of thinning and breakage, issues. I asked for a wash a press and protein. She cut off a good three inch per my approval. The experience was wonderful. I truly liked the light fun salon atmosphere and Dawn is not only a skilled beautician but has an amazingly sweet personality to boot. She typically focuses on locks, dreads and styles I am too afraid to try out, but she also does sew-in extensions. And although I'm not as daring as most of the people on her IG (@stylebyKhadija) she knows how to use her talent in very artistic and creative ways. I read the reviews and thought this place was perfect for exactly what I was looking for . I booked a consultation with Dawn . I went in for the consult , she seemed please tell and explained to me exactly what she would do to help me achieve what I was looking for sound great $45 for the highlights in the front and an additional $60 if I wanted her to press and style it . I booked my appointment. Got to the salon and she completely forgot who I was and what we were doing to my hair . So does this mean that she just books her clients in any random order and not by what service they are giving . I wasn't to happy about that because I hate when stylist overbook !!!! She begins to do the highlights and she is very silent the whole time which is fine , so I put in my earbuds and began watching a tv show on my iPad . All of sudden I feel her nudging me on the shoulder (awkward) asking me what I did for a living . Random and awkward !!! I answered her and that's it she didn't say another word , so I put my earbuds back in . As I was sitting there I realized that the ladies that were clients in the salon were the ladies that had given the great reviews!!! All of a sudden I feel a chemical bottle fall on my cheek . I take my earbuds out and she is giggling saying " oh my hands are slippery" . Meanwhile I have hair dye on my cheek and she didn't offer to wipe it off so I had to use the cape to wipe my cheek . Ok so now she is done and I told her that I didn't want to put any heat on my hair for that day and to just give me a wash and go . I showed her a picture of how I wanted it . Mind you I know that every person has different curl patterns so I was shocked when she wanted me to show her a picture . As she was styling my hair she spritz in something that smelled really good , so I asked her what it was and she replied " something that I will start selling " . That's it !!! I began my journey with The Den Salon in 2005. She was referred to me by a client of hers who I had the pleasure of meeting at a social gathering several weeks prior. I was struck by how healthy and shiny her hair was so I worked up the nerve to ask if she'd mind sharing her hair care specialist. The day I sat in Dawn's chair she gave me a consultation first. She told me I never needed to perm my hair and that she's going to help my hair get back to health. For eight weeks, she painstakingly transitioned my hair out of the perm. She taught me how to be patient with my hair as the perm grew out. She taught me how to care for my hair during the transition. Transitioning is not for the faint at heart BUT it's worth it. You see, for years I was a slave to perming my hair until I noticed my hairline getting thinner and eventually I was bald around my left temple. trust me, it was fate the day I met Dawn's client! Right now, my hair is 100% perm free, long and shiny. She taught me how to maintain my scalp, how some little changes in my diet can help make a difference in my hair and scalp. I'm not afraid to go to the gym and sweat because unlike permed hair, natural hair doesn't get nappy. You can rely on Dawn to tell you the truth about your hair - there's no pipe dreams sold in this salon. The Den Salon uses top quality hair and scalp care products. They do not "water" their products down. The salon is clean and if you have the opportunity to visit The Den Salon, you'll observe the clientele represents one and two generations of a loyal people. I even have friends and family who, prior to visiting me from the east coast, will schedule an appointment with her because a hair and scalp care technician who takes the time to care for one's hair is a dying breed. The next station is Dexter Hopper. Dexter does beautiful hair too and he also does beautiful natural hair - dreads, twists, knots. These natural hairstyles he does are so pretty and I've witnessed his client's hair just growing over the years. Dexter also does INCREDIBLE weaves. I've seen his work and can't believe the heads walking out of the salon. It's important to note: the clientele that sits in his chair for weaves and hair pieces are not only African American, they're Asian, European, Latin and Caucasian. He does a lot of print and runway model hair and they walk out of the shop with an amazing look. Last but not least there's Darrell Watkins at the third station. He's the handsome one! Darrell has been doing hair professionally for over thirty years. He has a steady and loyal customer base that won't go anywhere else to do their hair. In fact, many of these customer's adult children go to him as well. He too is diverse, he has a steady stream of male clients who come in for his barbershop treatment like cuts, fades and trims. He has a steady stream of women who sit in his chair for the type of hair and scalp maintenance that has kept their hair healthy for decades. Darrell also does "special occasion" hair that's so beautiful. Depending on the length of hair, he'll add pieces to an updo to compliment the dress/gown. These are sexy and classic looks any woman would be thrilled to rock. The Den Salon is special and I hope I've given you good insight. My hair is very, very happy!! By the way, I was there the day LuLu L. came in to see Dawn. I remember because her hair was in very poor shape. Her experience she wrote is such a lie I can't even believe it. I was referred to Dexter for maintenance of my locs, I usually have a different method done for tightening but decided to try him it since he was highly recommended for palm rolling. My appointment was at 7am which is awesome, not traffic & you're out of there in time to go to work. Dexter washed and conditioned my hair, it felt sooo good. The products he uses leave your scalp feeling light and fresh. This was my first time getting my hair palm rolled and it worked out great. Although this place was recommended in the book "Thank God I'm Natural"...I will never step foot in this place again. If you have an appointment...prepare to wait at least 40 minutes for her to get to you. For those that are natural...you know how big a step it is to do your big chop. Dawn is the WORST person to facilitate this huge process as she is snippy when you ask questions and speaks to you as if you are stupid for asking. To make her job easier...I detangled my hair the night before. But it was obviously not up to her standards as she had the nerve to ask "did you even try to detangle your hair?"...which was not only rude...but isn't that what you are paying her to do..your hair. And when you ask her to fix something...she gets defensive as if you are not a paying customer paying for her overly priced services. She also does not take the time to wash your hair very well and rushes a cut...a service she charges 50 dollars for and lets you walk out the salon with dripping wet hair because she claims to have to charge you extra if she drys it for you...absolutely ridiculous. She also has her dog walking around the salon...which I was ok with until her assistant was petting the dog and playing with it licking her hands...and she proceeds to wash a client's hair without washing her hands after dealing with the dog. I started going to the Den close to two years ago. Dawn and Dexter always make me feel at home in their salon. Dexter, the gentlemen there is the one who takes care of my hair. He has done such a phenomenal job that my hair has been growing leaps and bounds. I enjoy the conversation and the laughter in this Salon as well. When it's my turn, I just admire the woman's freshly done hair who leaves Dexter's Chair and can't wait for my turn. So for the last past year I've been looking for a new stylist in LA who could give me an amazing look without jeopardizing the health of my hair. I'm really picky as I grew up in a hair salon and have really high expectations for how my hair looks after being styled. The Den Salon is an AMAZING place! HIGHLY recommended! I've started a routine with Miss Dawn, the owner of the hair salon, and so far my appointments and the results have been awesome. Our first appointment, I briefly explained to her my concerns, cautions, and goals...all I can say is that I DEFINITELY feel great with my hair in Miss Dawn's care. She was very attentive. It's so important for one to genuinely feel safe when getting their hair done, especially with heat! But when I tell you that that's the only vibe you get with Miss Dawn, I couldn't speak any more of the truth. She's sooo very gentle with your tresses...and in saying that:: I literally fell asleep while Miss Dawn was pressing my hair...that's NEVER happened to me before...ever. When hair stylists get close to my scalp, I tense up 100x. Never do I ever tense up with Miss Dawn because she's never touched my scalp with the hot comb (how great is that). I never knew a great haircut could matter, mostly because a never had one. To have Dexter style me was awesome. And I do day style me. I left feeling great and knew I was a customer for life! So glad I found Dawn to do my hair. Having just landed back in LA after 30 years away, I needed to find someone to do my hair. Keep in mind I've been getting relaxer since the age of 7, but a bad "perm burn" at a different salon in January left me ready for a change. After talking to Dawn, I decided to grow out my hair. Dawn spent a good amount of time explaining what my hair needed so it would grow and not break. I'd had decades of relaxer on my hair and was scared it might all start breaking. I agreed to take a chance. Glad I did. Dawn really knows about hair and was happy to explain and share her knowledge. I appreciated that. I've been coming here to The Den for about 5 months now. My hair is thicker and stronger. Plus, I love that almost no one believes I'm not still using relaxer because Dawn is so good at conditioning and styling my hair. I visited this salon only 3 - 4 times which resulted in severe hair breakage. The gentleman stylist is a huge fan of heat styling and quite literally burnt my hair with over-hot hair tongs. I stupidly allowed him to relax it on the last occasion which further broke my hair since he did not comb the straightener through properly and he allowed the mixture to remain on previously relaxed hair. My roots were still kinky afterwards, and I've been stuck with shedding hair. Not happy and very angry since my hair was in reasonable condition prior to visiting this place. read more
