We came here unexpectedly and very delighted to find this place. The best thing about this place is how they customize well known dished to their own flare and touch. For example their beef tartare, old fashioned and ceviche were all unique and had their own twist compared to what you get in every other well established eateries. 1. Reservation: recommended. I have eaten seven reasons twice now... the first time, it was one of the best takeout options I had ever had. The second time was at the actual restaurant and I now feel confident that this is one of the best restaurants in DC. They just do not disappoint- on ANY dish. Wow absolutely great experience- and I am a believer! We came for brunch and I started off with the Enrique Spritz (reminiscent of an aperol spritz) and my friend got the Americano. I'm not a huge fan of coffee but it smelled amazing and he said it was fantastic. We started off with the taquenos which were SO GOOD, we had to order two servings. For the main, we ordered the pork belly sandwich, the cazuela and the hamburger. All were really large servings, and all were perfectly seasoned. A colleague recommended this place as a great restaurant to celebrate a birthday, and as a spot handling COVID restrictions well. The outdoor area is as beautiful as indoors, though we ultimately sat inside. It felt very safe though, with only two other tables seated indoors on that level. From the moment we arrived, we were treated spectacularly. Service was fast, staff were knowledgeable, and the kitchen was kind with small dishes on the house. I adored the cauliflower soup they sent out! The arepas were pleasant, but actually not as good as everything else we ate. Maybe that's because everything else blew our minds. We had a hamachi crudo to start that was so good I wanted to scrape all the sauce from the plate. My fish entree was also phenomenal, with a sort of puréed corn that looked too good to eat. All of the dishes are plated beautifully. This is one of those restaurants where the food is art, and it tastes as good as it looks. My date loved the lomito encebollado, which came with this super tasty potato cake that I couldn't stop nibbling at. We also enjoyed cocktails, which were tasty as they were creative. For dessert, the kitchen sent out the most fabulous chocolate to celebrate my birthday. But we also ordered the melting cloud and didn't regret it one bit. Every layer delighted us, and we're so glad we found room in our bellies for that special, delicious dessert. You really just need one reason to go to Seven Reasons- a phenomenal dining experience, one of the best in the city. My wife took me here for my birthday during the pandemic and it did not disappoint. Here's our experience: 1) Food: The menu pulls from different parts of Latin America and items can be purchased a la carte or through their tasting menu. Since we were celebrating a special occasion, we opted for the $110 per person chef's tasting. Usually it comes family style, but they let us each pick each course since we have different tastes. Each dish was quality, but there were a few standouts- the Tartare de Lomito Argentino, Not a Traditional Beet Salad (the best I've ever had- the sauce that pours out of the beet once you cut into it is life changing) and the Rice From the Woods (vegetarian). Even though they stole the night, the other dishes were very, very good- Seven Reasons Ceviche, Cauliflower Tempura, Scallops and Trout and Open Sesame (dessert). 2) Drinks: Being cocktail people, we forwent the wine pairing and ordered two drinks each. The cocktail menu is unique and offers something for every palate. Loving more bitter drinks, my wife ordered the Seven Reasons Old Fashioned and the Passion over Perfection. My first drink was the Mule de Guayaba. The second changed my life- Nutty Mandarina. It's now one of my favorite cocktails in D.C. 3) Service: It's superb- not intrusive, but not stand offish. The timing of each plate was perfect. We never wondered when our next course was coming. Since it was my birthday, they surprised me with a plate of house made chocolate- two small pig shaped chocolates filled with a peanut butter cream and an entire bar of blondie chocolate. 4) Atmosphere: The restaurant is three stories with bathrooms in the basement and two dining halls on the first and second floors. During the pandemic, their upper back room keeps the windows open to help with air flow. Hanging plants transport you out of D.C. and into a garden setting. I was surprised the place wasn't packed at opening as some places are already filled up as soon as the doors open. The bar service was great. Honestly, where do I even begin??? Seven reasons easily had THE best takeout option I've ever had. I ordered the DIY takeout option for 2 for my boyfriend's birthday a few weekends ago and we were not disappointed. The kit came with sauces and garnishes for each dish and it contained 5 different courses--all of which were phenomenal. We started with the tostones and fish appetizer. The tostones were delicious and reminded me of the ones I used to have when I lived in Florida. I only wish the seasoning blend (which was delicious) was more evenly distributed among the tostones. Some were covered while others didn't have any seasoning at all. The fish crudo was beyond fun to decorate and so flavorful with all the sauces. Next, we had the lamb and theThe lamb was my boyfriend and I's favorite dish--even reheated in the microwave, it was perfectly cooked, tender, and flavorful af (thanks to the AMAZING Venezuelan hot sauce). The cauliflower tempura was also a delight. Lastly, we received two tarts for dessert. Both of them were divine, but I do wish I had a blow torch for the meringue. Since I didn't get to torch the meringue, I wish this had been more of a glossy, Italian meringue. Overall, this was by far the best takeout experience we've had. The stars of our meal were our cocktails. All of them were both unique and delicious! I came here with a group of 4 and we shared: - Seven Reasons Ceviche: Honestly not our favorite. The purple sweet potato was good but didn't really go that well with the fish. - Beef Tartare: Loved this! Really flavorful but would've been nice to get some bread or chips to more easily eat this with. - Cauliflower Gnocchi: Our least favorite dish of the night. Although presented beautifully, it was a little bland. - Hokkaido Scallop with Curry: Comes with 2 large plump scallops that were perfectly cooked. - Octopus and Lentils: Well-cooked octopus, decently portioned and flavored well. - The Duck Dilemma: Definitely get this if you like duck! The duck pieces were cooked perfectly medium rare. - Black Rice w/ Chorizo and Prawns: Huge prawns in this dish along with other seafood. We then ordered a bottle of wine for our main course, thinking that would arrive faster, but it took ~15-20 minutes for them to bring the bottle - it arrived after we finished eating our mains. This time, it seemed like the waiter was instructed to squeeze out as much money as possible. It started with our water choice. Tap was never an option. He asked if we wanted bottled, sparkling, or still. That was $16 total. Then after we ordered our food, he asked if we were celebrating a special occasion and we replied our anniversary. After congratulating us, he asked if we wanted truffle shavings on the rice. We are no novices in fine dining and knew truffles were expensive. We also knew having been here before on several special occasions and ordering our favorite dish, the chorizo and prawn rice (paella), that this was never offered. It's also not on the menu as an additional topping. So I asked back to clarify and without disclosing the price, he said yes, on top of the rice, so I reluctantly said ok. There were about 8 truffle shavings that did not really add any aroma or flavor to the dish. Later that night, we'd learn that was $54. And after dinner, he asked if we wanted dessert. I told him my wife and I are thinking about two of the sorbets. He said ok. 15 minutes later, he comes back with the full set. We had not ordered dessert yet so I thought maybe it's complimentary as they have done so with previous special occasions. That was $15. Then you smack all of the excess money with a 22% automatic tip charge when it's just me and my wife, that's $103. One hundred three dollars unwarranted. I expected to pay a $250 bill, not a $350 bill. The $250 of cocktails and food was well spent. Food is phenomenal (if you must try out this restaurant, I recommend the arepitas, ceviche, grilled octopus, chorizo and prawn rice with no truffles. I used to love the cauliflower tempura but when I ordered it couple nights ago, it was mushy) but what happened this night is unacceptable and absolutely absurd. My wife and I were irate, utterly disappointed. It was one of our favorite local spots. My very first post, I had come here pretty soon after it had opened, I strongly believed after a few kinks, I felt this restaurant would obtain a Michelin star. I was a fan, telling friends about this place. I no longer think any of this. There are too many mistakes. Instead of making a scene, we decided COVID times are tough for restaurants. We couldn't choose a favorite because they were all great! Though I personally did not drink, our table thought the drinks were yummy and certainly visually creative and appealing. Our server Carlos was great. A few downsides to the meal. First being, there were a couple tables in the main dining room which never filled while we dined, not sure why we were seated at the lone table by the bar. The table was not the issue, it was a nice intimate corner, but rather the restaurant had multiple employees (a chef, hosts, servers) all crowded around the edge of the bar the whole time - it was frankly unprofessional and backed up into our table. Though delicious, the portions are small - have an issue leaving any restaurant not full, and we ordered an add on too! Lastly, someone needs to look into changing the spoon for the Arroz. It was a massive wooden spoon for a very shallow dish, which didn't help at all in serving the dish. A small detail, but you would think it wasn't overlooked. He says that the Chef/Owner Enrique Limardo "studied architectural and industrial design before devoting himself to restaurants," thus explaining the immense beauty of some of his dishes. He goes on to quote Limardo who said "our customers are seekers . . . looking for something different." Sitting beneath the lush greenery descending from the towering ceilings I felt that I had found something different before I took my first bite. Here are my Seven Reasons to try, and return, to this restaurant. 1. The cocktails are impeccable. Our waiter encouraged us to describe the flavors we enjoy and let him surprise us with cocktails that match our tastes. Part of me thinks he nailed it and part of me believes I would have enjoyed every cocktail on the menu. For the Bourbon Street cocktail, a blowtorch is used to ignite fresh herbs over top of the drink. I think in part due to the shape of the glass, the smokiness remained at its peak level throughout the full 20 minutes I was drinking it, thus adding a depth and complexity to the cocktail that I can't stop talking about. The Passion Over Perfection and Mango Bajito were both excellent in their ways. 2. These dishes are really unique. You are not going to find these flavor profiles elsewhere. The headchef, Nacho, trained in 10 different countries in just one year, eventually making his way to Santiago, Chile, where he worked at a restaurant that was voted the best Chilean restaurant for four consecutive years. The food is heavily influenced by Venezuelan and Spanish cuisines, but there is a touch of everything here. 3. The service is wonderful. Our waiter was attentive and took the time to walk us through the menu and artfully describe each dish as it came to the table. He also acknowledged my birthday repeatedly, and left us with Seven Reasons chocolate bars to take home as a birthday treat. 4. Everything is in balance. I defy you to find something that is too sweet, too salty, or too spicy (if you have the palette to handle a little heat). I've recently had a number of tartare and other similar dishes that were packed with flavor but to the point that I couldn't eat more than a few bites because of the saltiness. The Tartar de Salmon was served with a cucumber and mezcal foam that made each bite airy and light. 5. It's beautiful in there. The building is modern and elegant and the interior is draped with greenery. The multi-level restaurant gives you a lot of different feels, from the Chef's Table where you can oversee the kitchen, to the more subdued top level which looks out to the patio. The plating, the glassware, and every other part of the visual experience is stunning. 6. For such fine dining it's not very snobby. My wife and I wore jeans and didn't feel out of place. It's not cheap whatsoever, but it's not unattainably expensive either. It has an open and inclusive feel that matches the chef's desire to bring this type of eating experience to more people. 7. Your prix fixe menu will come with some unexpected treats. For us, it was watermelon sherry gazpacho served as an amuse-bouche and a kiwi sorbet served, I suppose, as a pre-dessert dessert. What a freaking experience! I'm not sure why it took so long to finally make a resy. Now, they only have a prefixed menu. I was completely ok with that, though I know many ppl are bit upset with that change. Before going, I showed my husband a picture of a dish from the restaurant's ig. He said "so, I'll need to eat before I go" speaking on how "small" the portion size was. Let me just say, we were both fighting to finish the last dishes and eat the dessert! It's so much GREAT food! With pallette cleansers in-between some dishes! We thoroughly enjoyed every dish and the drinks. I would name the dishes, but I forgot. And the menu changes! read more
