EDIT 5/27, 7:29 PM. David has edited his response to my review eight times. I received email notifications every time. I have screenshots of his full post from last night, as I posted on my social media, and I'm adding that to the images section of my review. Apparently he's now attempting to be a bit more professional, but the OP is very telling. I wish I could reply in the thread, but Yelp doesn't seem to allow this; I'll hit the main points here. * Dave didn't offer to waive my assessment fee if I ordered his Uber rides. Note: Rides, plural. The Pool fares were ~ $5 each, and I voluntarily deducted them from the PayPal amount I sent. The larger point is that it isn't professional to have a loft client order and pay for your rides. Call a family member or friend. Figure it out. Potentially, he can milk clients for transportation. * Prior to meeting Dave, I told him what I wanted structurally and aesthetically, and he was excited about the opportunity. I knew that his work normally was less involved, but a contractor of his trade reasonably should have the skill set to prep better quality wood as well as to use bolts instead of screws for a loft. He partners with a painter, and, if needed, I could have supplied my own. The caliber of work he delivers, frankly, I learned in middle school wood shop class. * He originally commented re: my Yelp reviews, saying I gave 28 one-star ratings. How thorough. I'm Yelp Elite with ~ 200 ratings that are higher. But, yes, I'm not shy about expressing my discontent on Yelp, to vent and so that others could take note. If this means I'm emotionally unstable, per Dave, fine. -- This is just dandy if ya like it rough--a quick fix involving four by fours from Home Depot delivered to your residence, screws vs. bolts by default, no to minimal sanding, and shoddy or no paint. If you're looking for a polished product, this isn't for you. Even at double the cost or more, this contractor can't deliver the quality I seek. Kudos to the guy for at least admitting this. Had he refunded the assessment fee after he realized he couldn't do the work as requested, I wouldn't write this review. But I'm stuck paying a fee even though *he* can't perform. And let me tell you about the assessment experience: The guy was nearly two hrs late. Approximately one hour after our appointment slot, he asked me to order his Uber because apparently he couldn't get his app to work. When he was leaving my place, I said I'd take a look at his app and settings, but he just wanted me to book another ride using my account. I ordered him two Uber Pools (not getting X or Select for a stranger!) for the sake of my time, and I deducted the fares from the assessment fee. He had the nerve to comment that people generally pay for his rides. Oh, and my passenger rating plummeted after his two rides. Okay--a contractor without a shop to accept delivery to prep the wood, Home Depot products, no car for his transportation and tools, screwed up business tactics... Five star reviews? Really? I have contractors in my family, and this is far from the standard. Got a guy to do quality work sans the bs.

David came out to move the loft he built us a few months ago. He also cut it down in length and raised it 9" to fit the new space. The kids are still loving it!!!

SF Lofts for us was like Goldie Locks and the Three Bears, only our story was about three types of lofts. SF Lofts was "just right." This five star review is given for 1) Quality of workmanship; 2) Price point; 3) responsiveness to customization, 4) hard work After researching Ikea options for lofts and some prefabricated ones at specialty stores, my wife and I came across SF Lofts. We needed twin bed lofts for our twin boys. The Ikea options seemed rickety and cheap. Their prices followed suit. The high end ones looked nice, but were out of our price range. They also didn't fit the space the way we needed them to. SF Loft's customization appealed to us and we are glad we went with them. SF Lofts and David's service were "just right" for what we needed in terms of customization, quality, durability, and price. We wanted a safe loft for our eleven-year-old twins, and beds customized to the space. David delivered. David is a skilled and meticulous craftsman. He is fair with his pricing. As a sole proprietor his skills lean toward his craft, but not necessarily his organization around the sales process. He presents as someone still learning his sales procedures. But what is clear in talking with him was he wants to do the right thing by his customers. I urge those who call him to take time to ask questions and get a sense for each step of the process so there is no confusion. I think based on my experience with him he appreciates questions to help him think through each job carefully and thoroughly. For example, after some discussion by text we had a call where he disclosed that he would do jobs in the East Bay, but that he charged his expenses for travel. It was not clear initially what this meant, but he clarified it once we talked about it. It may be important for a new customer to get a firm agreement about this so there is not a misunderstanding. The travel costs for him may be different for each job. I think it is a more than fair request to ask for travel expenses, however, if he is making an hour and half round trip or more to do a custom design talk with you without even the guarantee of getting the job. David was also generous with his time during the assessment and answered all my questions. He took over an hour to evaluate the beds we needed and their specifications. The day of the job, he and his employee were efficient and worked very hard. A few days later he checked in and asked if everything was ok. We are very happy customers, and my kids love their new beds.

    So solid and sturdy!

Dave, Wolf, and all the people at SF Lofts are great! Intelligent, people persons who really know their stuff and put together the most high quality custom loft beds at a super fair price! I am so lucky I went with them when I was on-the-market for a loft bed in my SF apartment. It has held up so incredibly well and really helped me create so much more space in my 650 sq. ft. spot in Nob Hill which as you know, is clutch! They really made the bed specifically to what worked best for me- adding in some awesome shelving and making the height such that I could walk under easily without worrying about accidentally hitting my head. They really went above and beyond, and even dealt with my building/ working with me to reschedule without stress when people in my building were being rude about the construction and made us halt production. I learned the hard way that I needed to write in to my building to get permission first. Writing this little tidbit here in this review in case it helps anyone avoid this situation. Anyway, back to the main point, I can't endorse SF Lofts enough- they are the best and I wouldn't look anywhere else cause they got it all :)

    So much new space!

I live in a very typical SF studio, i.e. tiny but with very high ceilings, and thus perfect for a loft! Prior to calling up Dave, almost every square inch of my living room was covered by a piece of furniture; I had no walking room whatsoever and having people over was out of the question. Dave transformed my place from an uncomfortably crowded mess to a very aesthetically-pleasing and roomy studio! Dave is an amazing carpenter who worked wonders. He is passionate about his work and takes great pride in delivering the best results he possibly can. He also works fast and charges very reasonable prices for his top-notch work. Thanks Dave!

I needed to find a way to share a room while still having some semblance of my own space. Best way to do it? Have David design and build you a super sturdy custom loft! If you are considering a loft, seriously, look no further. He helps you plan out the design and figure out what's best for you and your unique space. David even rigged up a custom ladder for me at no extra cost. What a guy. Top quality & AFFORDABLE!

I moved up to the Bay area a few weeks ago, and everything went smoothly...until I saw the size of my room in person. My roommates warned me that it was a very, Very small space (about 9X9 generously) , but I figured I could deal with it because the rent basically paralleled the utilities in my last place. Boy was I wrong. I thought that there was no way that I could live in that room comfortably, without reliving my college days in a twin sized bed. Then, I thought to myself, the only way to make this work with a full sized bed was to loft it and get it out of the way. Twin sized mattresses just won't fly at this age. So I looked around to try to find lofts, and nowadays, I wouldn't even sleep on half of the lofts out there, let alone try to support two people on it. So I called up Dave via his craigslist ad, and from the first conversation, I knew that it was a great decision. My budget was also a concern, but he was able to quote me a price, and guarantee that I would pay no more than that! This guy is very thorough. Dave came over for the loft consultation--no charge--and did an amazingly thorough job illustrating what would soon become of my room for me. He and his coworker really hit all the spots to make sure that the loft was everything it needed to be before even beginning the building process. The work would have been done in one day, but I had a time mishap, and he generously offered to come back and put the roll bar on, no problem. My roommates thoroughly tested it out by hanging, swinging, and basically hacking it to test the sturdiness. It passed all tests, and the best part is that it breaks down completely to be transported elsewhere. I can't say enough good things about this whole process, and I'm definitely glad that I found Dave to make this room work! My loft is the pictures with the blueish comforter!

Simply put...Dave is the man! He is very accommodating and flexible, offering great ideas and showing a genuine interest in the client's input. My studio in Oakland is microscopic, and my black lab was climbing all over my mattress. I needed a solution to maximize my space and elevate my bed. After looking at IKEA and combing the internet, I realized there are very few pre-fab options for adult lofts. The only ones that are decent quality and able to support the weight run well over $1,000. That simply wasn't in my budget so I turned to yelp, and luckily I stumbled across SF Lofts. He met me in Oakland and performed a free consultation which included exacting measurements, a rudimentary floor plan and specs. Within a week, I had a sweet loft that completely opened up my apartment, transforming a 150 sq foot dungeon into a much more hospitable and livable space. The fresh lumber smells great and adds a rustic charm. Aesthetically, the loft is clean and well designed. I couldn't be happier, and I owe Dave a debt of gratitude. Look no further...he's the real deal!!

Reasonable priced w/ good quality Space Saver loft bed! David is great in his work. From planning we are transparent communicating our ideas then He made sure everything goes well accordingly to what we wanted, he offers many options to chose from and gives insights from his years of building experiences though there is a some changes in the process due to the new norm we are still able to work everything out. We decided to pick/transport our lumber together with David. He is very knowledgeable for picking up good quality woods. For build details you could tell he really gives time to explain, make sure the build is safe and precise to your customized needs. Our loft build is special case the bed size we wanted is 12 inch over the regular queen size, we utilized our space in a small living room near a non working fire place, and also the ceiling is dome shaped but inspite of it David was able to manage building our very sturdy loft bed. We are very pleased and happy in our new loft.

Dave could charge far more than he does for his quality of work. If you think you probably couldn't afford something like this -- I didn't -- make sure to call and get an estimate before writing it off. It wound up costing me almost the same as ordering and shipping an unstable, crappy Ikea loft frame. The loft itself has changed my life, because my apartment is teeny tiny. It has made living here way more cozy and has opened up my ability to buy more clothes, get kitchen supplies, cook more frequently, and spend time comfortably with friends in my home. As for Dave's handiwork, I think the images speak for themselves. It's an incredibly solid structure and he builds it from scratch -- he even procures the lumber for you so you don't have to deal with it. Like other reviewers have said, he's very professional in his system: He meets with you in advance to spec out your room, he works efficiently while putting up the loft, and he even sweeps up all the sawdust created afterwards! Plus, for a very cheap rate he's able to come back, disassemble the loft, and reassemble it elsewhere if you move. I've been really happy sleeping on my loft. The only thing I would change about it is the ladder, which I struggle a bit with climbing. It's worth asking him to make you a leaning ladder instead of a vertical one -- a little more expensive, but easier to use I think. You might also want to have a piece of sandpaper on hand to sandpaper down the ladder before you use it. Since it's raw lumber, it's a little rough and I got a splinter the first time I climbed it (but none since). Given how cheap Dave's prices are though, sanding down the ladder yourself is a very minor inconvenience. Totally worth it. I cannot recommend SF Lofts highly enough.

I'm a bit late with this update, but I couldn't just ignore the awesome work that Dave does!! I moved back in July and contacted Dave to see about dissembling my loft and reassembling it at my new place and cutting it down from nearly 6 feet high to only about 3 feet high. I got a super quick and enthusiastic response and, to my great joy, a really reasonable price!! When Dave arrived to do the job he was exceptionally helpful when evaluating my needs with regard to cutting my loft down and ultimately discerned that maybe 3 feet would not be high enough for utilizing the space underneath as I was intending too. I really appreciated him going the extra mile to actually understand my need as opposed to just doing what I asked without evaluating why because I would have been really disappointed with not being able to optimally utilize my limited space at my new place. Dave had my loft dissembled, re-sized, and ready to load on the truck in less time than I anticipated and was sooooo patient and understanding when my truck was late and eventually never even showed (be very leery of Craigslist hauling services because I had a confirmation and everything). After some improvising we finally were able to get my loft moved into the new place, 2 hours behind schedule, but Dave never complained and had my loft up and ready super quick and was even willing to stay a bit later to reinstall my bookshelf, but I couldn't as the apartment complex I moved to does not tolerate hammering (or other loud noise) after 10:00pm and it was already a bit after 10:00pm when my loft was finished. He was so thoughtful and gave my brother-in-law detailed instructions for installing the shelf and even pre-marked and drilled everything to make it easier. 2 months later I'm loving my loft and the lower hight!! Thanks Dave for all your hard work and excellent lofts!!

6 fit high queen loft! He helped me salvage my old broken loft!

Amazing experience- Dave was really nice! I had a queen size loft that needed to be retrofitted for stability. Dave came over, and did an amazing job of helping me turn a shaky loft that I had that was also shorter, into something sturdy that is also a huge space saver for my room. I highly recommend working with Dave! I appreciated his willingness to work with my needs, his attention to detail, his investment in quality materials and his flexibility.

I spent a couple of stressful weeks trying to find the perfect loft. A majority of them that I found online were expensive and did not feel stable enough for me to sleep on. I am glad that I found David through craigslist. Making an appointment with him was easy and he followed through with the date we agreed on to build my dream loft. David put a lot of time building my loft. He also updated me through every important step and explained his reasoning for building it the way he did. This shows that he is knowledgeable In his craft and that he really cares about his work. I definitely made the right choice asking him to build my loft and I highly recommend his service to anyone moving into the Bay Area that needs more space in their apartment.

We were quoted $7,850. Remarkably, the windowbox was built and installed in less than a week. Unfortunately, the attention to detail in execution was poor: * the seams between the four main pieces aren't properly aligned, producing unsightly and rough-feeling edges * many of the edges were cut in a way which badly chipped the veneer * one of the hinged openings is badly misaligned, resting several mm above the surface * a drawer face was delivered with a stray drill hole * one of the main front faces was delivered with a large gouge * one of the drawers was designed to hold a CPAP machine; Alex carefully measured it, but delivered a drawer which didn't fit it * the drawer faces were attached with finishing nails rather than hidden joinery; the nail holes were then covered with poorly matching filler * the desk slabs were returned to us with gouges in the main surface, a 2" divot taken out of an edge face, and unfinished sides Alex told us that the misalignments are because our floor isn't level--which is fine, but the other two woodworkers we've worked with carefully shimmed their bases into place on-site so that everything would be level. Alex told us that finishing nails were necessary to attach the drawer faces, but another woodworker who built ash veneer cabinets for us produced beautiful results with hidden joinery. We sent Alex a list of 13 issues with photos; Alex gamely told us that he'd send one of his woodworkers to fix all but one issue. After a month delay with several reschedulings on both sides, the woodworker came. He fixed the two issues with the desk slabs, but in the process he also partially removed its surface finish, without comment and without offering to refinish it. He said he didn't know how to fix the other issues, and we were left with unfinished desks we still couldn't install. At this point, Alex stopped responding to messages. I gave up and refinished the desk slabs myself, which took about five hours. We planned to put a cushion on half the windowbox and leave the other half exposed, to enjoy the wood tone, but because the execution quality on the windowbox was poor, we decided to cover the whole thing with cushions instead. They meant well, I think, and they really did try. They did deliver roughly the windowbox we wanted, though with a low level of craftsmanship. I think they just don't have the skills/experience needed to execute this project well, and we didn't realize that before hiring them.

Replacement of six worn dining chair seat cushions and making the chairs more stable and safe. Alex and his crew did a great job with both, using solid teak legs for the table and dissembling and reglueing the dining chairs and fixing the seat cushions. The mohair chair backs were in good shape, and glued to the frame, so we wanted to keep them, though the seats had no cushion left and needed replacement. Alex closely matched the mohair backs- as he said, "a little different style but you'll like it!" We do! The cost was very reasonable and both projects were done in less than a week, with pickup and delivery. It was a pleasure working with him: great communicator, knowledgeable, and honest. Highly recommend.

Fitting new cabinetry into an old wooden building required a lot of customization during installation, and Gregory was definitely up to the task - as mentioned by other reviewers he is easy to work with, creative, flexible, with an "incredible eye." He did all the installation and finishing himself (with a helper). To be fair, it took Gregory longer than he had estimated to make and install the cabinetry, but it was definitely worth the wait and he was very responsive and obliging throughout the process.
