Just past the security checkpoint in terminal 2...The path to enlightenment.
    Lori I.

YOGA at SFO Terminal 2! After a 4hr flight we had a 6hr layover at SFO. I was dreading the layover but then I stumbled on 1. Free WIFI for the kids! 2. Charging stations on each seat at the gates, so the kids could use the wifi for all 6hrs. 3. Pinkberry, which had dairy free, no sugar added mango Pinkberry! 4. Napa Farms market, which sells half bottles of screw top wine for the hubs. 5. Blue Bottle Coffee for the hubs. 6. The biggest and best surprise was when I saw the sign: "Check out our yoga room" LOCATION: just after the TSA security checkpoint, inside the corridor from terminal 2 to terminal 1. PRICE: free! There are complimentary mats and pillows but if you think you might come here, bring your own mat and towel just to be safe. There are no instructors or classes so you have to do your own flow or watch a YouTube class on your phone or laptop, using the above mentioned wifi. Like others have mentioned, the room was probably a storage closet in a past life so it's nothing but a dimly lit quiet space with hardwood floors and a mirror. This is truly the best (and only) airport yoga I have ever experienced. Get your down dogs, warriors, crows and pigeons right here. This is the calm away from the airport madness, the one place you can lie horizontal with "yoga" as your excuse for half an hour. Namaste.

    Achieving nirvana...no big deal

So I'm not going to lie....there is a slight chance you may contract a Staph infection after borrowing one of SFO's yoga mats but there is also a small chance you might achieve nirvana. So what's a little infection worth when you are talking about liberation and profound peacefulness of mind? The SFO T2 Yoga Room is pretty bare bones. It is a dimly lit room with hardwood floors and one mirrored wall. That's it. On my last visit, the room was blissfully empty which was nice because I walked in having no idea what do. I laid a yoga mat on the floor and tried to keep all thoughts about athlete's foot away from my head by starting out with a few cat, cows, a sun salutation, and a few made-up poses that were fun to watch in the mirror. I ended up in corpse position for a solid twenty minutes and emerged from the room as fresh as a daisy on a warm summer day. This room is awesome (sans the yoga mats)! I highly recommend going here if you are a: 1) seasoned yogi who needs to stretch out before or after a long flight. 2) yoga noob who just needs a good place to nap (tell anyone who asks are practicing your shavasana and nobody will bother you) during a layover. NAMASTE!

The thing about the wonderful combination of lack of sleep, going through TSA security, and being way too early for your 8am flight is the nausea from sleep deprivation/TSA and the inability to do much more than wait in line for coffee that will keep you up on your flight and probably contribute to the feeling not so fun. But alas! There is a better option than struggling in the 20+ person line for some Peets before your flight. I spent about 30 minutes pre-flight and post-security yesterday morning doing a few poses, and I'll attest that it's a nice quiet spot to get away from the chaos and claustrophobia of an airport. Where else can you be practically solo in an airport? As Kimberly V outlines, this is a very basic yoga room. There's one bolster, a few mats, a bench, soft lighting from one end of the room, and one mirrored wall. All that separates you from security and curious onlookers a frosted glass wall. In 30 minutes, I only had one guy peep in to see if it was really a yoga room (shocker), and he immediately left, presumably perturbed by my sun salutations. Despite the hippie/yuppiness of the concept, I wish they had one of these at every airport. And at my office. Well done, SFO.

View from the far wall. This space could easily fit 10 people. Nice and quiet.

This space could easily fit 10 people. Nice and quiet. Dim lighting sets the mood for relaxation in an otherwise noisy, stressful place. Anyone who has time should definitely make it a priority to stop by this free room.

Don't be rude. Don't be this girl.

I was grateful for the space during the wait before my flight back home, but I happened to catch it at its worst - which has nothing to do with the space itself (hence 4 stars) but everything to do with the other people. When I went in, there was a girl sitting against the wall on top of half the yoga mats, propping herself and her laptop up with all the communal bolsters, clacking away at her keyboard for the entire hour I was there, and who knows how long before or after. I get that there's an outlet and it's quieter than the terminal, but it's not a space FOR YOU AND YOUR LAPTOP, it's a space specifically for yoga and meditation. Also within the hour, no fewer than 25 people ripped open the door to stand idly in the doorway and gawk inside, despite numerous signs screaming YOGA ROOM both directly outside the room and in multiple areas leading up to the room. One guy lingered in the doorway way too long as I finished a vinyasa so I looked over and asked him "it says YOGA ROOM, what exactly were you expecting to see here?" About 30 minutes into my practice, an otherwise quiet woman came into the room and sat against the wall next to an outlet. Thanks to her I now know what 20 minutes of breast pumping in a quiet room sounds like. So yes, again I'm grateful for the space, but damn the oglers and weirdos and disrespectful people just love ruining lovely things.

I love the idea of a designated yoga room in an airport. A good little spot to stretch, breathe, relax, and escape before a flight. There is no charge to use the room. Your own yoga mat and towel are recommended. The room is located past Security in Terminal 2 Boarding Area D and is open 24 hours. There is also a room in Terminal 3 Boarding Area E near gate 69. Namaste. www.flysfo.com

This tickled me. Only at SFO, I thought to myself. Then someone told me that JFK and DFW also has them. I'm still tickled

The room was dimly lit, which I appreciated for the relaxation, and had a wall of mirrors on one side.

When I went on a Sunday afternoon, there were quite a few people there to talk or work on their laptops. I'd recommend coming earlier if you want to snag a table. I saw a lot of people catching up or doing work as well!

The entire time I was at the studio and after, I felt like the staff was hounding me to commit to a membership. While I get that it's normal for fitness studios to reach out for post-class feedback, Ritual Hot Yoga exhausted my patience with their incessant texts and emails. I was literally getting spammed with notifications. Apart from the incompetent administrative staff, the class was delivered at such a rapid pace using esoteric jargon rather than industry standard terminology that I could not keep up and transition quickly enough, and the instructor failed to check on me throughout class. Also, since the room was really dark, it was difficult to see and copy others' movements, and the instructor walked around and often stood at the back of the room instead of demonstrating the movements at the front of the class. Worst class ever. I left Ritual Hot Yoga feeling like I hadn't worked out at all despite it being a hot class, so I immediately went to the gym afterwords to get in an actual workout. Ritual Hot Yoga wasted both my time and money. I will never return and have de-influenced my friends from coming here.
