Showered upstairs; caused downstairs toilet overflow. I called Sgt. Smith's based on their rave reviews. Didn't know whether they'd come up to Portland area -- they will! Called on Sunday evening, spoke with a nice woman and asked for a callback in the morning (we stopped the flood.) Plumber (Ian) called us within 10 minutes and came out the next day. We had tree roots blocking the pipe to the street. He cleared it and came back next day with equipment that disintegrated the rest of the roots. Micah (owner) came out also as Ian was fairly new to using this particular machinery. We had a bunch of trouble getting anybody to come out and help us with a slow leak, but then we found Sgt. Smiths and thank goodness. They were prompt returning our inquiry and getting out to take a look at our issues. Once onsite, they were able to identify that an entire section of piping was on the verge of failing the same way. They were able to give estimates for various ways we could go about fixing it. I appreciated this transparency. They explained the pros and cons well. What started off as a bit of a disastrous evening turned into an opportunity to meet one of the nicest people I've met in a very long time. We'd had some warning signs of some plumbing issues lately (which my wife took a lot more seriously than I did, and I should have listened!). It came to a bit of a head tonight when toilets were bubbling, water that was "less than clean" started bubbling up into the tubs, and water was leaking out of the outflow pipe in the basement. Not awesome. We made some frantic calls to a number of places. Several just didn't service our area. Multiple said that the soonest they could get somebody out to us was Monday (one said 10 weeks!), and MANY just didn't get back to us. That is, until we came to Micah. Micah not only was willing to come out, after hours on a Friday night, but I genuinely cannot remember the last time I'd met this nice (or interesting) a person. Saturday, February 4th, the coldest day of the season so far, and hopefully the last one, like tons of other folks, I had frozen pipes. Sgt. Smith van was at my neighbors house. I talked to Cody, who couldn't have been nicer, even though he was cold and tired and his day had just started. I went home and called, again the woman that took my call was awesome and within 20 minutes Andrew called me back. He said they probably couldn't get there until 5:00 p.m but they would get someone out there. At 3 p.m, 2 hours ahead of schedule, Will showed up. Again cold and tired but defrosted the pipes and didn't leave until I felt secure enough that everything was OK. Not only was Will kind and professional but he liked my dogs. Turns out our basement problem has been solved! The only plumber I called (I called ten plumbing companies that advertised 24 hours service) who really is 24 hours service came out at 10 pm last night and figured out that our new sump pump had a defective float mechanism. Great guy who used to be an intelligence analyst in the Marines. Hence the name of his company Sargent Smith's Drain Cleaning Services. The owner is Micah Smith. 207-432-9378. Great service and very fair pricing.It turns out the Zoeller pumps you can buy at Home Depot are not as good as the Zoeller pumps a plumber buys at a plumbing supplier that are made entirely of cast iron and have a more reliable float mechanism. Like the way Koehler makes "big box store" Home Depot versions of their bath products that are different and not as good. The float valve on the Zoeller we had in there was defective so it was running every 20 seconds and eventually overheating/ stopping every few hours... flooding our basement... bc it was only running on the backup float which has a very short run cycle. He also put in an alarm alongside the new pump that will alert us with a smoke detector type loud beeping noise if there is an issue with water in the basement. Couldn't be more pleased. read more

I didn't know Mr. Smith until we established a professional relationship. Mr. Smith was extremely responsive and got back to me right away, which was my biggest issue in finding a plumber since June of 2019. His availability was amazing and was able to get to us two days after giving us a VERY fair quote. I found Mr. Smith after months of searching for a plumber who will do both big and small jobs. Called about a clogged main line . On a Thursday afternoon before holiday weekend starting Friday . Everyone from office member who answered call to technician who called me back to schedule to the tech that showed up was very friendly . Jeff showed up a mere couple hours after I called , he was friendly from the get , was sure to rule out other options before deciding I did need a snake and once we determined that, he quickly and thoroughly took care of the problem . Where do I begin.... My basement has never had any water issues, my husband has been away for work since June so it has been me trying to deal with this while he is away thousands of miles for work! We have had 3 floods in the past 5 weeks. My husband called Micah and he came right out to look at he issue and had us booked for a pump the very next week!! As bad luck would have it we got water in the basement last Thursday/ Friday, my husband called him told him of this and pushed us up for Tuesday:) Today Andrew came over to get a list of the things he would need for the sump pump, while he was here I showed him my side lawn with all the standing water! He immediately knew it was not normal as it was like a small geyser, asked if he could dig a little without hesitation I said please do! Minutes later I walked outside after calling my husband, and he said" want the good news?" He found the problem as to why my basement was flooding!!!! He found a very clogged drain, and unclogged it! Long story short no sump pump and and unclogged drain which we never knew we had and many dollars saved!!! These guys are a blessing, I have never been so thankful to have honest, dependable people.
