I spoke to a very rude employee who had quickly disconnected our conversation over the phone after asking her on my appointment that was scheduled through them. The person was really rude and didn't bother asking who was she was speaking with, or care what was the reason of the call. I went here to get the musician earplugs, as I am musician by trade and perform regularly around the bay area. first visit, I was fitted with ear molds, seemed fine. a few weeks later, when they arrived, I went in to pick them up, and I tried them to see how they fit, and they did not fit well. they were not fitting the way they are supposed to, so they offered to do new ear molds. I set an appointment, came back a few days later, and they did new ear molds, however, this time, the molding process was very painful! It was like the guy stuck a needle in my ear or something. the next day, I had very bad pain in one ear, loss of hearing, and a constant ringing noise in my left ear. I went to Urgent Care, and they told me I had an ear infection. Since then the pain has eased up, but now I have what might be a permanent ringing noise in one ear, caused by this place. I have taken good care of my ears over the years, and now I have constant ringing. Office staff was nice sympathetic and gave me a full refund, but my ear is still ringing and the 2nd pair of earplugs didn't fit either. read more

My review is for the Castro Street location. It has taken me several months to process what happened to me at this office. I got my first-ever hearing aids there. Little did I know that they didn't fit me and fell out easily. I thought my problem was my masks during Covid. I would take off my mask, and often a hearing aid would fall out. Several disappeared. The coup de grace was when I made an appointment to go in for another replacement and found out two things: 1) SF Audiology had dropped my insurance (Blue Shield) without notice to me, and 2) Epic Hearing Aids had dropped my model of hearing aids without notice. I moved on and found another provider who sold me hearing aids that anchored firmly and comfortably in my ears. That is when I realized that I had never been properly fitted at SF Audiology despite return visits when I would lose another aid. read more

I made a Yelp account just to write this review. I spent about an hour waiting to get someone on the phone to schedule my appointment for musician's earplugs. Eventually I left a voicemail. They called me back a full day later. I scheduled an appointment for 8 AM because I have a busy work schedule. I got an appointment reminder text the day before. I woke up early to make my appointment. When I got there, nobody was there. It took me 10 minutes to get someone on the phone. They told me the doctor was out that day and they, "had tried to call me but had the wrong number in their system so couldn't notify me." (I should mention here that they never asked for my number when I made my appointment -- I assume they put it in incorrectly based on caller ID.) When I mentioned the confirmation text, they said they had two systems (?). I'm going to get my earplugs somewhere else. read more

It's a factory.( I want to point this out - audiologists love to dis Costco. This one was no different. And yet, all of the audiologists I've been to have accepted Costco's evaluation. And in fact, Costco's hearing evaluation didn't really deviate from any audiologist's exam I've had. Wouldn't get my hearing aids at Costco, but I would trust their hearing tests.) Most of the audiologists I've been to (this one included) can rarely give you detailed information why one model is better than another or why one technology is better than another for a specific patient. Nevertheless, I already had an idea which one I wanted, and was told they'd check my insurance. 7 days later, no one has gotten back to me. BlueShield is good at answering their phones so SF Audiology was on the hook for ten minutes. If a company can't respond to an insurance question then how will they be when you need an adjustment or a repair. Keep all those things in mind because they will go on and on about how much better they are than Costco because of their attention to detail. That hasn't been my experience. read more

I received an email from Sally explaining that there was some type of misunderstanding between us. She also pointed out again that my insurance was going to expire at the end of June. If she had done her job prior to contacting me she would have found out that my insurance wasn't expiring. This woman took no accountability for her actions and messing up the situation. 20 minutes on hold to get to a person. I needed to be seen urgently because I suddenly lost hearing in 1 ear and it can become permanent if not treated. They couldn't find previous record of my prior visits 3 years ago. Then couldn't get me in for more than 1 month! When I explained again about the urgency, I was told their doctors are busy. Fortunately I called SF ENT. They picked up right away. Got me in for next day appointment for hearing test and a doctor will squeeze me in. The Doctor who treated me and people who did the testing were good but the office is a total mess. I belatedly remembered that I had deleted their info from my contacts because of a similarly frustrating incident a few years ago. read more

My review is specifically for Terri Gallagher and this review is 3.5yrs overdue. I was up for upgrade as technology has increased so much since 3.5yrs ago. Being I wanted these hearing aids to pair with my android phone without issue, Terri Gallagher suggested Phonak. She allowed me to trial Widex Moment with transmitter, Phonaks M70s and P70s. Ended up with Paradise 70s as everything worked seamlessly with my Samsung phone. Terri is very patient and easy to work with. In terms of fine tuning, I couldn't be happier with my original Widex and first trial pair of M70s. Looking forward to picking up my P70s. read more

They are both very friendly, knowlegeable, caring, & thorough. They explained what they were going to do & took their time explaining the results of the test. This office is a satolite one, so a bit a small, yet comfortable including their exam room. I would wholeheartedly recommend them if you need an audiologist. They are in San Mateo every Monday morning & Wednesday afternoon. So, for wonderful audiologic care, Dr. Cullinan & Jasmine cannot be beat. Keep up the good work guys. read more

I liked the audiologist and his service. I liked the hearing aid. I was most unhappy with how they handled the insurance. Without explaining the issues with the insurance company they sent me several demands for payment when they could not get reimbursed. They sent me several payment notices, and I responded knowing that my insurance informed me these were covered. It was not until I got a final threatening letter saying that they were turning me into collections that I posted on YELP...and then they responded. Now my insurance problem is getting resolved and payment should be OK. But the months of frustration getting demand for payments led to the 3 Star rating. read more

It was easy to make an appointment with little delay. Staff was pleasant. I have no reason to doubt that the exam was competently done. So, pleasant and competent. Why only 3 stars? Because, on two separate visits they were pushing hearing aids hard. I quote: "You need hearing aids in both ears". My ENT (not part of SF Audiology) did not strongly recommend hearing aids, after looking at the same SF Audiology data. He said that it depended on my level of frustration with my existing hearing. I'm not particularly frustrated. So, I ended up feeling like it was hard sell, for their benefit, not mine. read more

I saw Dr. Carey Philliposian for custom-made earplugs. She told me that her earplugs don't protect beyond 33 dB, but that because custom-made earplugs fit the ear, the protection will be better than the earplugs available at Walgreens or Amazon. She also told me there was a no guaranty and no-return policy. The cost was $150. She told me I'd receive a telephone call to pick up the earplugs in two weeks. Two weeks came and went, and I received no telephone call. When I telephoned to find out what's the status on my order, the receptionist told me the earplugs still have not arrived. No kidding! She did no follow-up whatsoever. She did not even try to call the manufacturer to learn of the status. She left me with no information whatsoever. When I finally received a call to pick up the earplugs, Dr. Carey Philliposian was not available to speak with. A staff member gave me the earplugs and the instructions on how to wear and take care of them. When I inquired about the doctor, the staff member told me she was not available. No kidding! It turns out that the earplugs do not cancel noise as well as the 3M earplugs I purchased at Amazon. It turns out that it is not the case that having custom-made earplugs promising a better fit give a better result than regular commercial earplugs. It also turns out that these custom-made earplugs hurt my ear after just a few hours of wear at night. They are not very soft or pliable at all. It turns out that going to San Francisco Audiology for custom-made earplugs is not a guaranty of satisfaction at all. A hundred and fifty smackers out the window. read more

I came here for a consultation, mostly to get a second opinion as I'm already a lifelong wearer of hearing aids. SF Audiology is one of the few clinics that's licensed to fit people with Earlens, so I just thought I'd check in for an evaluation. They don't have a receptionist, which is a little bit unusual for me as I haven't been to any medical office that didn't have a receptionist. Nonetheless, the staff were quite attentive people waiting in the lobby, asking patients if they had been helped. I spoke with Carey Philliposian who was quite professional, and thorough in hearing out my situation. She was helpful in providing advice and sharing her thoughts as an experienced practitioner. Though I didn't end up getting fitted with any new devices, I felt comfortable speaking with them and talking with them. I would recommend SF Audiology to anyone else. read more

I recently worked with Dr. William Huson at SF Audiology for 4 weeks, and I rate them 5 stars for three reasons: 1. Their policies are flexible and aimed at helping their patients. I was able to try two different makes of hearing aids to see which was best for me. I was even able to decide not to keep either. I found I wasn't ready for hearing aids yet, but I would never have known without being able to try them. When I'm ready, I will definitely go back to them. 2. Dr. William Huson is one of their newest, and youngest I think, doctors. But his professionalism and knowledge was amazing. He totally understood the technology involved and was very comfortable with the computer that helped set up my hearing aids to match the results of my hearing test. He also was a great listener. 3. SF Audiology works closely with San Francisco Otolaryngology (ENT) Medical Group. So they are able to help both with ear medical issues as well as hearing ones. I have been in need of hearing care for 20 years. When I first decided to get help 20 years ago I lucked out and found Andy Valla when he was at UCSF and he's been my go to audiologist ever since. Fast forward to now. Andy is still my go to guy and he's fit me with several hearing aids over the years and always gone to painstaking efforts to make sure I'm happy and doing as well as I can with my hearing aids. I only wear one in my one hearing ear so I have always had some anxiety about what would happen if my one device failed. I have a "normal" job so I can't be without my one working device at all. Amazingly, I've gotten by 20 years without having a crisis until a few weeks ago. My Resound Lynx2 was pretty fickle in humidity. It was ultra ultra sensitive to moisture and would just shut down if I was in a humid environment (it even happened on a boat). It happened in the recent rain and it had been a while so I forgot that's what caused it. I called Andy, who is now a staff Audiologist at SF Audiology (in San Rafael) but he was out at a conference that week so in a panic I asked if I could come in to see anyone else. They accommodated me and got me in the same day to see Carey. Carey is a seasoned Audiologist and like Andy knows what she is doing. She told me she has other patients who had that issue and Resound can repair the device. I told her I couldn't be without my device (it started working again after it dried out) and she said, "no problem - we can give you a spare!" I was a little flabbergasted, but within no more than 10 minutes she whipped out the same hearing aid I had (demo model), imported the settings from my aid and then exported the same settings to the demo. Voi la. I had a perfect working spare that matched my settings exactly. I wore that until my device was repaired and given back to me a week later. This was quite literally a lifesaver and she made it an easy process. I have had the good fortune of having Dr. Johnson as my E.N.T. for 20 years, so now that Andy is on this team and I have discovered how awesome Carey is, they will now be my audiology group that I will look forward to partnering with in the coming years. If you have the misfortune of hearing loss, I would encourage you to deal with it and get it treated. There are many resources available that you can use to help yourself from national organizations, to local support groups to friends and family that share the burden. So many people just live with it and pretend it isn't a problem until they are forced to deal with it. Don't be that person. It can be a bitter pill to swallow to have to wear hearing aids, but once you accept it and tune out the occasional negative connotations surrounding wearing them, the quality of life far outweighs any negativity. Today's modern hearing aids are, like smartphones, mini computers that can pair to smartphones and other devices, and enrich your life beyond what you even though was possible. Unfortunately they can be expensive and insurance usually doesn't cover them but I would still recommend saving up or cutting out other things in your life if affordability is an issue because nothing will reward you more than hearing better with today's state of the art hearing devices. If you do need help with that, I can confidently say San Francisco Audiology is a great place to start or resume that journey. read more

Several months ago, I experienced some sudden moderate-to-severe hearing loss, which Dr. William Huson guided me through every step of the way through his knowledge, expertise, and compassion. Given my situation and needs, I came to the conclusion that I needed a hearing aid. Dr. Huson provided me with several kinds of hearing aids to research and try out, among different costs and sound quality. My academic background is in linguistics (phonetics) and so is Dr. Huson's, so I appreciated being able to discuss my needs from this added, valuable perspective. In the end, I chose a higher-end model to help me better distinguish higher-frequency sounds like "th", "f", "s," and "sh." Dr. Huson clearly walked me through on how to best calibrate the hearing aid,operating the various features, and the proper maintenance and cleaning of it. In addition to Dr. Huson, his office staff and his technologist are also superb and are very helpful! All in all, it has been a pleasant experience being in his care and I strongly recommend him to any prospective patient in a heartbeat! :-) read more

My preferred audiologist for the past decade recently retired and I needed to find a new office to maintain my Oticon Opn hearing aids and make any necessary adjustments as age continues to take its toll. (Full disclosure: my former audiologist is also my wife, but when she says "retired" she really means it!) Dr. Stong is a consummate professional who works with the latest technology and studies current research on hearing and on brain hearing. I knew I had top quality hearing aids -- and there's a vast difference between different brands and models -- but changes in my hearing had slowly degraded the benefit I was receiving. After testing my specific loss and asking me questions about the sounds I was comfortable with, Dr. Stong refitted (reprogrammed) the instruments and I left the office once more enjoying the great benefits of these cutting edge devices and more fully engaged with the world. read more

My love for EDM deepens with age. So I need to have the ears to hear it for a long, long time. Been fortunate to never have a ringing sensation after a night out, though I've at times found myself hearing the voice of my mother if I happened to be dancing close to the speakers: "Jason, you'll lose your hearing!" Sunscreen, eating right, being nice to people, the lessons never end. Few years back I started using generic foam earpugs. This helped a lot, both in lowering the volume and for peace of mind. But I wanted something even better. A few friends recommended custom Westones. Same brand Above & Beyond use. Sold. Needing an audiologist I looked to my fellow yelpers for a recommendation. Union Square Hearing was highly rated. Appointment was booked. Call came with a bit of urgency. Two weeks away from my annual trek to Miami for the Winter Music Conference. And this year the journey was continuing in South America, with a stop in Bueno Aires for Armin Van Buuren's ASOT500. Was assured I'd have them before departing. The excellent, excellent team: - Sally at the front desk makes the appointments, makes sure my paperwork is in order and showed me how to wear my new plugs (flashbacks to getting contacts). - Dr. Shindler cleared my canals to make ensure a perfect mold. He also quotes Shakespeare. Awesome. - Dr. Gallagher answered all my questions and was the one who blasted silicone into my ears. That was different. Everyone was extremely professional, friendly and experts in the field. As promised I had my earplugs prior to leaving and told the team I'd wait on my yelp until I could try them out. It's now been a few days since Miami, and what I took away from some epic nights out were amazing memories, not ringing ears. The 9db filters worked splendidly, with the music sounding more subdued but still very clear. Having a conversation is also easier, something about the way the filter allows in voices without it sounding like you are being yelled at. You can also get 15db and 25db for even more reduction. $250 gets you the plugs along with a filter of your choice, as well as a pair of solid adapters for maximum noise reduction. They were brilliant for the plane ride. It was money well spent. Five stars all around. To my mother for nagging in the most loving way possible. To me for doing something before any damage was caused. And especially to San Francisco Audiology for helping keep my ears hearing the music I love for a long, long time to come. read more

I showed up here on a referral from my ENT Specialist: Same building, convenient. But they didn't have my appointment on the books... They had my paper work on the day's clipboard, so somebody was expecting me at some point. They took me in when I showed up. I was asked background questions, then put in a smaller soundproof room for the actual testing. Lots of left and right hand raising at directed beeps. Sometimes I faked it bc dammit! I just want to hear everything!! The audiologist was pleasant, sensed my want for a quick fix and adjusted her directives accordingly. No hard sell on hearing aids, and this shit's expensive. read more

I REALLY wanted to write a great review here. SF Audiology did a great job of performing my hearing test, and Lyndon was awesome. I truly thought it would be a great experience purchasing and following up with SF Audiology on a continuing basis. I was so excited, but I had asked if they might let me know if they could match the price (or come close to it) that I could get through my insurance discount program. Sally said sure, but she would be out of the office the next Monday and Tuesday, but would call me Wednesday (first red flag to me should have been "is there only ONE person who can help me?"). I emailed her while she was out and let her know what price I could get elsewhere. After a full day, I got a reply that she'd look into it and call me the next day. Next day came and went, no call, no more email. The next day, I then called the office and said "Hi, I was there a week ago and was waiting to get going ordering my hearing aids. I also emailed and haven't heard back yet." Her first response was not "Oh sorry we didn't get back to you." It was (in a very annoyed tone) "well who did you email?" I feel that if I'm about to spend $6000 out of pocket, and a week after I wanted to start the process, I don't even get a reply, then they probably don't want my business. My experience has left me crestfallen, and I'll go somewhere else. read more

At the age of 30 I was sent for a hearing test at the insistence of my general practioner and many close friends. I came to SF audiology under my doctor's referral, and entering that office I was full of fear. I soon learned that I have been living with profound hearing loss for 10 years caused by genetic degenerative issues. The doctors there all were very compassionate and took their time with me through my tears, explaining the process and lifestyle changes living with hearing devices in both ears would be for me. I first went to San Francisco about 7 years ago. I had delayed getting hearing aids near my previous home in Massachusetts, anticipating the need to have an on-going relationship with which ever provider I chose. I'm totally pleased with the care I've received at SF Audiology since that first visit. I see Terri at the lovely, comfortable Union Square office which allows me to also enjoy shopping and lunch in the heart of the city. Recently I just received a new technologically improved pair of hearing aids. Since their use involves the use of my iPhone, I required considerable teaching from Terri, who was thorough, patient and unhurried. I'm learning how to make use of all of the new features, and know that Terri is available whenever I have a question. I highly recommend San Francisco Audiology. read more

I am grateful for the expertise and good work of Dr. Carey Philliposian (and the team at San Francisco Audiology) for their help in providing me with a solution to my hearing difficulties that has exceeded my expectations. My hearing loss was gradual, over decades, not the result of accident or injury, so my brain (and body) learned to compensate for it. The human brain's amazing ability to adapt comes at a cost, however. Considerable energy and attention must be expended. When the stress of struggling to hear clearly was relieved, I experienced a burst of energy that suddenly became available for productive activities. That energy is now translated into better physical and mental performance and, of course, delight in enjoying the gift of life itself. I am thrilled with the possibility of discovering new dimensions to life. Common wisdom describes aging as a time of progressively declining abilities. Yes, I am not as quick or as strong, physically, as when I was younger. Has that impaired my ability to continue to learn, even physical activities like playing the piano or playing tennis? Emphatically not. Can a hearing aid reduce facial wrinkles? Absolutely! This has been my experience, after just one week of wearing my new hearing aids (both ears). I can see and feel the difference in the tension of my facial muscles. The muscles are now more relaxed because I am no longer straining to hear and process what I am hearing. Outcome - wrinkles are reduced. Can a hearing aid improve visual acuity? Absolutely, for the same reason. In retrospect, I think I must have been squinting a bit while I was straining to hear. The same tension in my face that exacerbated my wrinkles also had been affecting my eyesight. Can a hearing aid give me some advantages over a person with normal, i.e., unimpaired, hearing? Again, the answer is yes. Wow! What a revelation. My hearing, unassisted, is about 70% of normal in the highest third of frequencies in the range of human hearing. This is considered "Moderate Hearing Loss". In a personal context, I would describe this as mildly frustrating overall, but trying to have conversations in noisy restaurants was a struggle that I wanted to avoid. Definitely a social handicap. As a teacher, I had difficulty hearing the questions or answers of students in my classroom. This was not acceptable. I felt I couldn't fulfill my responsibility and I couldn't enjoy my work. Modern hearing aids are remarkable mini-computers, capable of modifying, in many creative ways, the sounds that come into my ear. I now have the ability to selectively increase or decrease (to some degree) the input of certain frequency ranges. For example, in a noisy restaurant, I can use the directional functionality to focus on the person seated directly opposite me, or to either side, and decrease the sensitivity to the ambient noise. Isn't this an advantage compared to a person with normal hearing, whose ears will be filled with everything? This is a totally new experience. I am looking forward to the next decade with great hope and anticipation! I wish that all of us, at any age, can and should feel like this, every day. Life is truly full of surprises and opportunities for us to feel more alive, to appreciate more of what life offers us - both the happy moments and challenging times. We need the contrast to remind us that this is the journey of being human. We must always be humble and grateful for everything. We learn from every interaction and every action we take. The greatest sin is giving up on life, denying ourselves of the opportunity to grow, by being too lazy to invest the time and effort. As long as we are alive, we are growing. As long as we are growing, we are alive. read more

I was born with a severe-to-profound hearing loss and have had a close relationship with audiologists/speech therapists my whole life. I am very tight with my original audiologist in my hometown, Sao Paulo, Brazil. When I moved to upstate NY for college, I had a good audiologist in NYC, that had also known me when I was young (I've spent some of my childhood in NY). So, any emergencies, I zipped down to the city, no problem. So, when I moved out to SF, I realized that I did not know ANYone that could help me if my hearing aid starting acting up, my mold was uncomfortable, etc. When my hook snapped and the t-coil was busted, I tried the Hearing and Speech Center of Northern California, and it was TERRIBLE. While they couldn't really do anything about the lack of Phonak technicians in the Bay Area, the audiologist was distracted, indifferent and tried to talk to me with my hearing aid in her hand, which I found incredibly insensitive. They later charged $20 dollars for a new tube for my mold. WHAT?!?!?! I've usually gotten that replaced for FREE. to make a long story short, i looked up the Union Square Hearing Center, and was seen by Dr. Trythall. He responded to all my emails quickly and politely (essential for stressed/nervous deaf people). Saw me quickly and was very helpful. I was buying a phonak savia art, and he was honest and helpful in regards to my decision. his adminstrative assistants are also sweet and helpful.
