    Ebi Shumai Japanese First Course
    Dina L.

Decided to drop in after a Trader Joe's haul. The service was quick and attentive. The colors and decor didn't make me feel like eating- red is kinda harsh and the chairs were hard. The food was acceptable, but underwhelming. Reading the reviews, there wasn't a popular dish mentioned. I'm wary of having sushi when I don't see a sushi bar. The Tom Yum soup was nicely flavored but it was difficult to tell if the shrimp were completely cooked- important since I'm allergic to raw. The shumai was tiny and somewhat tasteless. The Pad Thai was a total fail. Way too sweet, hardly any bean sprouts and tiny cubes of fried tofu with the mystery shrimp Not sure why the ratings are so high. No need to return.

Popped in for lunch today and I have to say this place is always a good choice! The staff is always kind and courteous. It's never terribly crowded and even so, it still feels intimate with the group with whom you're sharing a meal! They have daily lunch specials and BoGo sushi rolls. Friday's special is the pineapple fried rice (my favorite) and it was just as delicious as always! I also decided to get the dragon roll which is my forever favorite - something about that eel ! If you're looking for a delicious selection of Thai/Japanese fusion dishes, I cannot recommend Shaba Shabu for date night, lunch with friends/co-workers, or for business meetings!

I have dined here a few times. I wrote this review previously and it disappeared. I'm going to repost this review. While the sushi is great here. I question the service the last time I was here. There were two of us and the waiter refused to split the check. We were told because this was policy and it was written on the menu. I don't recall seeing this. I do understand not splitting checks is a normal practice for large parties. This was not that. I have never returned. I don't know that I will. This location isn't convenient to my part of town and honestly I haven't thought to go here since.

I absolutely love this place. Been coming for years. Whether take out or dine in, BOGO sushi or pad Thai & chicken teriyaki, they're always consistently good food, good service, and good prices. Something that I think they do better than a lot of other sushi places are the rolls on the BOGO menu. They have tons to pick from and they're all well priced. We just recently got 4 specialty rolls for less than $38.

6/7 visit: We had the taste for sushi and wanted to eat before hitting up Trader Joe's. Never shop on an empty stomach lol! I was happy to learn they offer BOGO rolls so this is a win. A very nice restaurant with a calm and quiet atmosphere. Well, we stopped by during lunch hours so I can only speak for this timeframe. We were quickly seated and promptly served. Our server was friendly and polite. He was familiar with the menu and helped us with any questions we had. We ordered chicken pad Thai, shrimp tempura roll and the spider roll. The rolls were good sized portions and flavorful. The pad Thai on the other hand didn't fit to my liking. The reason was the noodles used and the taste. It had a very sweet taste which I didn't like and they didn't use pad Thai noodles I am used to. They used a thinner noodle, which normally I would love but not in my pad Thai. I'm used to a thicker noodle. I would visit again for the bogo sushi if in the area.

Went early this evening and enjoyed the peace and quiet that this place offered. The service is excellent and the food is delicious! I had the Pad See Ewe and the Thai House salad with peanut dressing. The portions are LARGE!!! In the picture this is about half of my order as I couldn't finish it and took it to go!

    Kee Mao Lunch with Shrimp

This is a favorite lunch place for meeting up with friends and relatives as the atmosphere is quiet so you can actually carry on a conversation and hear it. It's in the Trader Joe's shopping center on Wake Forest Road near the beltline. Plenty of parking, even though it's a busy strip mall. They do take reservations, but usually there's no problem getting in (at least for lunch, can't attest for dinner). Love the Thai lunch specials. Not huge quantities, but very tasty and nicely prepared. Kee Mao and Basil Chicken are favorites. Do know if you order shrimp on a lunch meal, it will be just three. Great prices for the quality. They also have Japanese items on the menu including some BOGO rolls. I personally stick with Thai here, but have been with others who were happy with their Japanese selections. TIP: Look on line for their daily specials for both lunch and dinner. They also usually participate in Restaurant Week when it comes up.

    Massaman Curry with shrimp

Delicious food at this combo Japanaese/Thai spot. It's a storefront shop in a strip mall an hired by Trader Joe's. Plenty of free parking. The restaurant shares an entrance with a coffee shop. We were there for an early dinner so tables were plentiful but the place filled up quickly. Service is quick and pleasant. Approximately 10 minutes from order to service. Massaman curry with shrimp is delicious. Perfect shrimp, onion, avocado, potatoes in a pool of creamy curry sauce, slightly sweet with the tiniest bit of heat. Plus a crock of sticky rice to mix in. A favorite combination, done well. 1 point off for leaving the shrimp tails-on. It's a pain to fish the shrimp out and de-tail. Pineapple dried rice is a unique and tasty choice. Freshly wok-ed fried rice, tossed with chunks of pineapple and a few raisins make a nice combo of sweet and savory. This option included tofu - a BIG portion of cubed tofu, nicely stir-fried with a crunchy outside and soft inside. Lastly a couple of sushi rolls. The star is the sweet potato rolls. Small chunks of tempura-style sweet potato ensconced with veggies and topped with avocado. Tasty! A full menu of other choices to try... Will be back to this place!

    Wolfpack and Samurai Roll

Was told by a couple of coworkers that I must try Shabu Shabu as their sushi is amazing and I have to agree! I arrived at lunchtime, so it was pretty busy. The manager warmly greeted me and took me to my table. My waiter was a little cold and it felt like he was rushed. He sat down my menu and asked me right away what I wanted. I told him that I needed a couple of minutes and he did not come back or even around me for like 10 minutes. Before my stomach could eat itself he reappeared and took my order. I got their BOGO sushi deal, and decided to get the Wolfpack roll and Samurai roll. The Wolfpack roll has crab, avocado, scallions, and tempura flakes. The Samurai roll had cream cheese, salmon, and scallions. Wow! They give you a generous portion of fresh sushi along with ginger and Wasabi. Everything is fresh and so worth the wait! It still stays good as I could not finish the rolls and took them with me. I cannot wait to come back as a couple of dudes next to me had their Thai basil which came with tons of veggies! They highly recommend it as they get it every time. So I will be back!

The atmosphere in the restaurant was very inviting. The food was acceptable. We were a party of 8 people, and many of us commented that we didn't receive the kind of taste explosion that we were anticipating with the dishes that we ordered. One of our diners was from Thailand, and she felt the food was decent, not exceptional

oh my GOD!!! The service, the food, the people?? I've truly never had better sushi and service in my whole LIFE. It was so delicious and everything was so fresh!! it's a little expensive when getting two alcoholic drinks, but it was so worth it! Joy was a literal joy to have as a server, she always made sure we had plenty of water, and that we were always doing okay! I cannot WAIT to come back here!!

Awesome takeout option! I spontaneously ordered takeout lunch online on a rainy day, and ShabaShabu did not disappoint. With an estimated wait time of up to 45min, it was ready under 20! Such quick response and great quality. Next time, I'll definitely come back to eat inside - the interior is lovely!

Not too bright nor dim. Our waiter, Dylan, really treated us well. Before we ordered anything, Dylan gave us each a very, warm terry-cloth wash cloth for our face and hands. Nice touch. We just had water to drink, but that's okay. My husband's entree was very spicy! We began with the Shrimp & Vegetable Tempura. The shrimp was quite fresh, and the flavor gave a great mouthful of taste and some oiliness (but, not dripping). Flavor! Also, we ordered Negimaki, which are grilled beef-wrapped scallions with teriyaki sauce. One bite is the way to eat those. Love the chopsticks, too. We were each served Miso Soup and two small salads (with ginger dressing). Sure did like that (the soup had good flavor, but was a bit salty for our tastes.) My entree was Teriyaki. I am not familiar with a lot of Japanese dishes, but I do know this flavor. I ordered the Steak. This came with stir fried vegetables with a good flavor of cabbage. I liked those. White rice completed my dish. My husband ordered the Spicy Seafood Udon. This proved to be more spicy than it appeared. This dish included vegetables, udon noodles, shrimp, hokkaido scallops, squid, green mussels, in a savory & spicy garlic butter sauce. We had food leftover, so we got some containers and packed them for home. We will come back here, and perhaps eat outside (sure, the view is of a parking lot), but the high tables and the torchieres give it a nice atmosphere - perhaps as the weather turns cooler, we will enjoy being outside. We spent over $100 without alcohol. Prepare for that, but, it's worth the drive and it's worth your time and money.

I will start off by saying that I am giving this place two stars because of the poor service. We ordered the following items: - Miso Soup - Suimono Soup - Spiral Ecstasy Roll - Regular Sashimi (16 pieces) We got our roll and sashimi but never got our soup even though we saw multiple orders of soup coming out. We were almost done with our food and then the Suimono soup came out. We had to flag down our server multiple times since he never bothered to check in with us. We had to ask multiple times for simple things like napkins and ginger. We finally got our check and told our server that we never got the Miso Soup and sent the other back since we didn't to gave soup after our meal was done. We paid and left. The food was delicious. This was one of the best rolls Ive had. The sashimi platter was also good. We realized after getting home that our platter was supposed to come with 16 pieces of Sashimi and they only gave us 12. I will go back to eat there but they definitely need to improve their service!!

It's located in downtown Raleigh on Fayetteville Street, right next to the ABC 11 studios, easy to find and a great spot if you're already downtown. The ambiance is great and fits the food well. There's a nice mix of seating, tables along the windows looking out onto the street, high top tables, traditional dining tables, and a sushi bar if you want to sit up close and watch everything being made. It feels lively without being loud, and works well whether you're there for a date night or a more casual meal. We started with the Aburi appetizer, torched salmon belly, ooba, salmon roe, Japanese seabream, yuzu kosho, and ponzu, and it was outstanding. Everything worked together perfectly, rich, bright, and balanced. I also ordered ikura and ebi, even though I meant to order ama ebi, but no regrets there. Still excellent. We shared the Poke Roll with wakame, avocado, cucumber, mango, tuna, salmon, hamachi, and Sono poke sauce, and it was very good, fresh, flavorful, and well composed without being overdone. My wife ordered the spicy miso ramen and loved it. The broth was the star, deep and comforting, and the pork chashu pieces were massive, in a good way. I went with the chicken katsu curry, panko fried chicken thigh with house curry and koshihikari rice, something I haven't had since Little Tokyo in LA a few years ago, and it tasted like home. Comforting, familiar, and exactly what I was hoping for. For drinks, I ordered the "SONO? SO-YES!" entirely because of the name, but also because I love blood orange. Casamigos Blanco tequila, Cointreau, lime juice, coconut cream, simple syrup, and blood orange juice, it was excellent. My only complaint is that I wanted more of it. My wife got the Okinawa Spritz, a play on an Aperol spritz with passionfruit, and it was even better than the original. We finished with the yuzu cheesecake. I debated between that and the ube cheesecake, but since this is a Japanese restaurant, yuzu felt right, and it absolutely delivered. Overall, everything from the food to the drinks hit. This is a place I would happily return to, and honestly, I'm already looking forward to the next visit.
