I am so glad I started this new year right at Shagan's. Ambiance: They have few tables inside this restaurant and I also see this could be a popular pickup option for people. Menu: Staffs are incredibly kind here & you can take all your time in ordering your food because the menu offers a lot of good combo options. They have chaat, appetizers, entree & combo options (both vegetarian and non-vegetarian) My personal favorite is 2 entree combo which comes with jeera rice & bread. Bread can be a plain roti or paratha or naan or garlic/butter naan. You can also request Stuffed parathas for an up charge. What we ordered: - Vada Pav - 2 entree combo plate (Moong dal & Butter paneer) - Mango Lassi Both Moong dal & Butter paneer was served hot - perfect for a cozy/cold night. Spice & masala level was just perfect and I personally don't prefer too much overdose of color or masala in my butter paneer which messes up my gut. Food has gone a little downhill since I last visited. The price was right for a very large lunch special, $9.99. However, the butter chicken lacked good flavor and sauce was very thin. Staff is very kind and accommodating . They've gotten rid of the Indian grocery and expanded their inside seating. I will probably not return. read more

Firstly, really incredible service. The woman who owns this location was at the register and she was incredibly kind and friendly. She seemed excited to describe the menu options and you could see that she was passionate about running the restaurant and wanted you to have a great experience. If you're looking for Indian food in the KC area, I'd have no hesitation recommending this place. The restaurant itself is part of a mini-strip mall so parking was easy to find. As is typical of restaurants in these locations, it's fairly simple - not a whole lot of decorations around. I ate in but can see why it would be a popular pick up location. The food itself was also excellent - the paneer palek especially was perfectly spiced and had the exact right combo of flavors. I love paneer palek and it filled my craving perfectly. I ordered a combo tray of 2 items, rice and a bread - it comes out in a tray that doesn't look super large but ended up being very filling. Overall, I'd highly recommend to anyone - the food was excellent but the owner even more so! read more

Shagan's is my go to for Indian food. I discovered Shagan's a few months ago through glowing reviews and have been back several times since. I've only ordered to go. All of the staff I've encountered provided great service and was very nice. It is a small walk up counter inside of a quaint grocery store, which I could see as being intimidating for those unfamiliar and looking to try something new for the first time. The staff is happy to help and provide recommendations. All of the food is homemade. So flavorful! I love the garlic naan and dipping it in the sauce with either butter chicken or paneer. There is also a drive thru as others mentioned. I definitely didn't realize that my first time ordering. Tryed Shagans delivered by Door Dash. Couldn't decide if 2 plate meal would be enough for my big appetite, so picked 3 dishes & garlic naan. Selected Butter chicken, Curry chicken and Tandoori chicken. Got the 8oz size of the selections. All 3 tasted great and had very good flavors. I'm a Keto guy but tasted the garlic naan which was also very good. Next time I'll be forced to pick only 2 selections. Three selections with rice was more than enough food. Visited for lunch at noon on a weekday. There was a bit of a line, and it took about 10 minutes to get to place an order. This is a place where you order and pay at the desk and then you go to your seat. They have a very small grocery section, too. Seating is pretty no-frills and close to the door, so keep your jacket on in the winter! The service was very friendly, and the food came out quickly once ordered. I ordered the 2-entree special (15.99), which came with rice and choice of bread. The food was very good, full of flavor and served default at a medium spice level. The overall serving size seems to be a little bit less than comparable restaurants. I'd definitely return to this location but only if I'm nearby. Compared with other locally owned Indian restaurants, you should be pretty satisfied with your visit here. read more

Tucked away in a little shopping center, Shagan's hit the spot for quick eats. Sometimes, going to a Indian restaurant for lunch feels like too much and would much rather get in and out while I continue my day. This spot does just that with quick service and even a drive thru! I got the 2chicken entree meal with rice and naan. My food experience was a bit up and down. The chicken curry was decent with big flavor that reminds me of a lentil soup. The rice was perfectly cooked. It was fluffy rice, which is something I enjoy with Indian restaurants. The naan was underwhelming as it was too soft and gooey. So much so that it was sticking to the cafeteria style trey. The highlight was the butter chicken! Next time I'll just get a double of that entree and amplify my meal to the max. It had amazing flavor that kept me wanting more and more. Sweet, buttery, with soft chicken that tasted good with naan or rice. The portion was ideal for lunch. I'm not stuffed, which feels nice for once after leaving an Indian restaurant. My last critique is the pricing seemed high at $17 for a quick and easy hole in the wall but overall, the butter chicken was so good that I would give this place a 4 out of 5! TL:DR Best Indian food in KC I have been wanting to try this place ever since Kansas City Magazine named it one of the best 40 restaurants in KC, however, with it being so far south, I haven't had an opportunity to go. That changed this week, when my boyfriend and I were scheduled to go to Terra Luna at the Arboretum (curse you, Mother Nature!). Upon arrival it does look a little humble, as it is half grocery store, with counter service for the food. However, looks are deceiving! The menu is on a white board - as I understand, it changes daily based on what the chef feels like making. We ordered 2 samosas, the 8 oz butter chicken with garlic naan for me (I asked the cashier what her favorite bread was) and my boyfriend got the 8 oz. chicken tikka masala and the aloo paneer paratha. I should mention here that I love that they have 3 portion sizes for their entrees. Some of the other places around town only serve huge portions, which is nice for leftovers, but from a cost perspective, it's nice to get something reasonably-sized. They do have 2 and 3 entree combo plates as well. Anyway, we sat down at an empty table and we were served our samosas right away. We did end up asking the cashier (who delivered our food) for napkins because the napkin holder at our table was empty - which she did very promptly. The samosas, served with, I think, a mint chutney, were out of this world. Most of the samosas I've had around town have been dry and kind of grainy, and I assumed that's just they way they are supposed to taste, since that's all I'd had before. But not these. The filling was so smooth and luscious - like perfect mashed potatoes. Maybe 5 minutes later, our entrees came out. I ended up having to ask for silverware - it only came with a spoon, but it may have been next to the register and we didn't notice. Anyway, I have long been of the opinion that Korma Sutra (RIP?) had the best butter chicken in town, but no, this has usurped it for me. I will say, it tasted quite different, and there was an herb I wasn't able to identify that added a wonderfully fresh taste to the dish. The chicken was SO tender - falling apart. The rice, again perfect. My boyfriend commented that he'd never seen rice grains THAT long, which is a testament that the chef was able to keep them intact. Lastly, was the garlic naan. The cashier was right to give that recommendation. Whole cow - like the best garlic bread-product I've ever eaten. So fricking good! Be sure to get some when you are there. My boyfriend really enjoyed his chicken tikka masala. I just tasted the sauce, since the portions were small, and it also tasted different (maybe because the chef is from a different region than most of the Indian restaurants around town?) but also very tasted. I really enjoyed his paratha stuff with potatoes and paneer! At certain points both the cashier and Shagan came over to check on our meal. While there were a few little quibbles with things for the table, the actual service and food were just beyond terrific. I see on these other reviews that there is a drive-thru window, which I wish I'd taken some time to actually investigate because that might be something I liked to do in the future. So so so delicious!! Everything we tasted was perfectly cooked - nothing was overdone, too greasy, undercooked, too salty - nothing. It's all delicious. I came here with a friend who knew the flow already. It was kind of a one-option deal. You pick three main elements, and a bread (and rice of course). And each meal came with a bottle of water. Then you sit down for your table service to continue. It took 10-15 minutes to put the plates together, but we explored their Indian groceries for sale, so that killed some time and that was interesting! Shagan said hello as well. I've had enough Indian food around the city to have realised that well, I can cook better! But sometimes you overestimate yourself and comes along a joint like Shagan's offering the most deliciously authentic kadhi pakora (corriander seed based yogurt sauce mildly flavored with fried vegetable fritters) and the best alu (potato) samosas you've had in a long time- the samosas that taste exactly like they would taste in the mighty city of Delhi, India. Her daily facebook updates about specials for the day are highly recommended to give you an idea of what to order. Shagan's is not just a restaurant. It's a reminiscence of a lovely punjabi chef and mother cooking authentic food for us. It's also a lot more than that because you just can't get enough of her food. You feel full, satisfied, calm and very comfortable after enjoying ghar di roti (a connotation for home cooked meal) from Shagan's. And we all know how important it is to share mutual feelings of comfort at times like these. I personally feel very lucky that I can order home cooked meal sans absurd ingredients at the drop of a hat and pick up to go from their drive through. Chatting with Shagan ji is a plus. She's warm, generous, affectionate and ever so lovely! Only few restaurants offer you a gratifying feeling of fullness during and after a meal. This place is one of them and I am so glad I got to try their humble Roti and Veg Korma. I savored every bite of the food, all.the while marveling how simple yet finger-licking-good their food was. Tasted like home-made food YUM YUM :) After having a horrifying experience with Godavari last night, I felt proud for supporting a local restaurant and all because of fellow yelpers. You guys need a pat on the back! Only tip I'd give the restaurant folks is to reduce the amount of oil in the korma. But everything else was great. Shagan's is a family owned restaurant, and that shines through their impeccable cooking. Every meal I've had here tastes like my grandmother prepared it for me (very authentic home cooked food). They have a limited menu everyday, which rotates depending on what Shagan has made that day. I also had the privilege of meeting Shagan herself, and she was so welcoming and eager to tell my group about the dishes that she cooked. The prices are really cheap too when you take a look at all the food you get for a meal. They are located in a strip mall type area, so lots of parking AND they have a drive-thru. If nothing else, please do yourself a favor and get the butter chicken ( rich, creamy, with just a hint of sweetness). I also really love the butter paneer.
