This location is in a shared plaza with lots of parking. The interior is a bit dark but warmed by the lovely couple running the front of house. The service was good and the wait from ordering to receiving an appetizer wasn't long. The samosa has a nice crunch and lots of flavor. The chutney and mint sauces were excellent. There is an option for lunch buffet or ordering off the menu. We decided to order off the menu. The garlic naan was so good with lots of flavor. I ordered the chicken tikka masala with medium spice level. It was so good with the sauce nice and thick with the right amount of heat. The chicken pieces were good sized as well. I would say the 4.1 stars is fairly accurate so giving them 4 stars. They are friendly and greet you, and service is fast. Ambiance is well decorated but not super fancy. They have nice comfortable booths to sit in. I ordered the veggie soup and saag paneer medium spice. The soup was supposed to be spicey but I barely tasted any spice. The saag paneer was good but the spice level bordered on mild. The saag had nice green color but I have seen darker (more spinach) in the KC area, but it was good overall. The beer was cold. They do a brisk takeout business. All in a pretty good indian food option for this neighborhood. They do seem to care and ask you how the food was. It was good overall. read more

This is a stop every time we're in the city. The interior is the most beautiful of any restaurant I have ever been in. Staff is incredibly friendly fly and helpful. We go for the buffet. For lunch, it's about $16 and for dinner, $18. That's such an incredible deal for the quality of the food they offer. I haven't tried a single thing I didn't like. If you don't want the buffet, you can order it off the menu. I highly recommend their salmon korma. It's so delicious and I don't know if any other place that offers this. read more

Sunday afternoon, I was feeling too lazy to cook, so I decided to treat myself to an Indian buffet. Since there aren't many Indian buffet options left in Overland Park, I chose to visit Taj Mahal restaurant in Waldo andddd turned out to be the best decision ever!!!!!! We arrived around 1 p.m., and the place was buzzing with chatter, had a soothing ambiance and packed with customers. Despite the crowd, we were promptly seated by one of the owners. The buffet spread was incredible. There was a wide variety of meat options: eggs, chicken, goat, and beef curries, which is rare in most Indian restaurants. They also had plenty of vegetarian dishes, along with salads and gulab jamun. As soon as we sat down with our food, we were served fresh garlic naan, perfectly prepared, instantly transporting me back to India--10000/10! The staff were beyond attentive! The owners checked in on us three times to ensure everything was to our liking, which is a level of care I've rarely seen. They even shared some history about the restaurant, their dedication to freshly prepared food, and how loyal customers visit daily. They were incredibly warm to talk to. I have a really sensitive stomach but as the day progressed, our stomachs felt fine and we did not experience any acidity from the food we ate which we have experienced with a few other spots. Normally we have had no issues with this restaurant before and have been coming here since I was born. However today, my partner and I ordered on DoorDash and the Goat Vindaloo had BONE FRAGMENTS in every piece of meat. This is not safe nor okay. We almost choked on one and went through to collect every piece and pick out the issues. It was even in the sauce. The bones were swimming in the sauce and very obvious upon opening the container. My car was at Firestone getting a new battery, and I was starving and had an hour to kill and Taj Mahal was less than 200 feet away. I had the Lamb Jalfrezi and it was great! Garlic naan and Basmati Rice were also first rate. I could have had the buffet but I know I would have eaten too much if I had. The service was prompt and friendly. We asked for medium spice and neither had any spice at all. The Saag Paneer seemed like creamed spinach and Tikka Masala just tasted like tomato sauce. No Indian flavor or spice in either. This is Waldo's gem of an Indian (Punjabi-influenced) restaurant. It also has an impressive bar with a variety of western cocktails. I'm neither a tee totaler nor big drinker, so haven't indulged yet. Someone said the bar has a definite resemblance to old Bombay wet bar places. In my experience, the clientele here is very friendly, adding to the obvious hospitality of the staff typical of most Indian spots. One thing at the outset, it's nice enough for a date but not so class-conscious that I could notice a dress code. India being the planet's largest democracy, that's not surprising. The food is DELICIOUS. Period, full-stop. Great lamb saag that's so fresh and flavorful it's even better the next day at home, with perfectly-cooked basmati rice. I can be seen here regularly. Displaying it's mural of plaques, recognitions, and awards on it's walls, Taj Mahal has undoubtedly been known and loved by KC locals for their modern take on Indian cuisine. Their menu boasts both vegan and meat options for every diet, and their interior - while a bit outdated - definitely doesn't fall behind on bringing the "sweet dinner date spot" a lot of us dating/married folk love. All that to say, their food was a bit overpriced, their portion sizes decent but not large, their customer service mediocre, and the Indian spice-flavor lacking in...well flavor. But...their GARLIC NAAN was mouthwateringly delicious. read more

This review is for takeout only and similar to other people I'm surprised that I have to make a negative review here as it has so many good ones. The one star is for how prompt the order was delivered and the plain naan was delicious. Everything else was somewhat off: veggie samosas well seasoned inside but over cooked and the edges were burnt. Lamb vindaloo was a tad greasy and dare I say: bland and not just not spicy hot but somewhat tasteless. The vegetable biryani was just veggies mixed with rice and oil: no nuts, spices, or flavor. Saag paneer was bitter and the chicken tika masala dry and with an unpleasant red coloring. I regret that we won't be trying this again. It was also somewhat pricy for over a 100$ although I guess we tried many things. read more

It's certainly not my intention to be negative right now, especially in all that's happening in 2020, but I also feel like I have to shoot straight; I have yet to have a good experience here. The first time I went, they were less than friendly and it was an uncomfortable takeout experience. We ordered delivery this past weekend, really hoping to have a better experience and it was very disappointing. The Mutter Paneer we ordered was seriously on par with a frozen Indian meal from Trader Joe's. There was zero flavor. When can you say you've had Indian food with zero flavor?! There was also no spice at all despite requesting it. The sauce tasted like tomatoes and nothing else. My wife took one bite and goes, "Aww mannnnn.." We were both disappointed because like everyone right now, we're wanting to support local but also keep an eye on the budget, so this was our only takeout meal of the week and it was really subpar. The naan and samosas were good, but I've yet to have either of those anywhere that I don't enjoy. To add some positives if you're on the fence, they have a good health score on Yelp, and many tend to really enjoy it. I think we're fortunate to have several good Indian restaurants dotted around the metro, but this is one I will skip moving forward. read more

ON THEIR OWN WEBSITE, 2 for $3.95, elsewhere on the internet where I ordered, $4.95, I was charge $6.95 which would be almost ok apfor a good handmade samosa. You can see in the photo, they aren't bothering to make the dough wrappers anymore, it's like they're using spring roll wrappers. Falso advertising and poor execution. I asked for their best Fish dish. They told me to get Fish Tikka Masala. I guess they don't have any good fish dishes. The fish was waaaayy too soft and had no texture. I just got back from Chicago. I am surprised this place has as high of a rating it does. We stopped by for Friday night dinner and although it was packed, the 2 of us were seated within 10 minutes. There was only 1 server for ~10 tables but this may be due to staffing issues during the pandemic. Our server was very nice and prompt despite the business. The food is what warrants the low rating from me. We started the meal with meat samosas. I am not sure if it was fried/prepared well because the entire piece of meat/potato fell out after the first bite. We ordered mutter paneer wtih garlic naan and chicken 65 for our main entrees. My gripe with the mutter paneer was the curry it came in. This curry is usually comparable to the butter chicken curry, which normally is creamy and slightly sweet. This curry tasted more like one used in other chicken dishes so I am wondering if the restaurant just added goat cheese and peas to a different curry base. We had asked for the chicken 65 as 'dry,' which it usually comes as. It first came out with curry and then when it came out the second time, it was still far from dry. These pieces of chicken were long tenderloins which is a stark change from the usual red, smaller pieces it comes as. Overall, we really did not enjoy either entrees. One silver lining of the meal was that the garlic naan and mango lassi were both excellent. Probably wouldn't come back but would consider it given the restaurant has otherwise high ratings. read more

MY 100th REVIEW!!! My family has come here many times, it's the friendliest, and the location is the most convenient. I don't know why I haven't done a review before now, and for that I apologize. Anyway, this place is really wonderful. The staff is the friendliest and we are there often enough they have become friendly through my sisters first pregnancy, and now through the second. They ask about the family, and really are personable. The food is delicious and I do enjoy the meals each time we attend. Last time we went, we got many different things. The Samosas were great, the filling in both were delicious, I really go like Vegetable Samosas, I think they are underappreciated. Not that the beef ones aren't great, they are as well. Not that I don't love Indian food or, this restaurant, but the Samosas were the peak of the meal for me. I like my food to have some spice to it, everything ordered was EXTREMELY MILD to accommodate the others in the party. I didn't complain, there was no need, but if something is extremely mild, which it was, the food tasted really bland. I'm not putting it on the restaurant, which is why I'm still giving it a 4/5, because my family doesn't like spicy and that is something I have to deal with when we go out and share food collectively. I will add that there was Chicken Tikka Masala left overs, and the next day I added in some sriracha to give it that kick, and boy did it make all of the other flavors that weren't there the day before POP! It was so good! Overall, I would recommend this place to anyone, if not for the spicy food, go and enjoy the staff, they are just too pleasant. At the moment they are doing a bit of a renovation, so be prepared for that, and can't wait to see what it looks like the next time I visit. I was visiting in town and tried this Indian restaurant and was very disappointed. I eaten a lot of Indian food in various counties and was looking forward to some Korma and Nan. Sadly the korma was not at all like I've had other places, not very creamy and almost seemed tomato based instead of rich with cream. The Nan bread was very thin and chewy, not fluffy and moist for dipping in the korma. Over all a disappointment. read more

We used to go here for the buffet. But Indian Buffets are no more, so we went for lunch. They have a great deal Indian Meal for 2 for about $55. You get soup appetizer, 3 entrees, naan, and kher. Very delicious and quite a good amount of food. The staff is super nice. The owner and a woman have been there for a long time. It's been remodeled in the last few years and looks great. read more
