Shagan's is a family owned restaurant, and that shines through their impeccable cooking. Every meal I've had here tastes like my grandmother prepared it for me (very authentic home cooked food). They have a limited menu everyday, which rotates depending on what Shagan has made that day. I also had the privilege of meeting Shagan herself, and she was so welcoming and eager to tell my group about the dishes that she cooked. The prices are really cheap too when you take a look at all the food you get for a meal. They are located in a strip mall type area, so lots of parking AND they have a drive-thru. If nothing else, please do yourself a favor and get the butter chicken ( rich, creamy, with just a hint of sweetness). I also really love the butter paneer. This is the good stuff right here; one of those gems that all the Yelp reviews really boost and help shine a light on. Absolutely no way in a million years would I have known about it, but seeing all the five-star reviews and being in the area led me to go out of my way for it. Worth it. There are a lot of (too many, tbh) fast food, convenience based spots in this stretch of Overland Park. This is no less convenient than those, tastes 1,000,000 times better and supports a wonderful, small local business. So I ordered online, and love the fact that the menu isn't overwhelming. In a hurry, I ordered quickly and just took a stab at what caught my eye to share with everyone: - Aloo parantha (which I'd describe as a pancake thin, wheat bread with Indian spices and potato mixed in seamlessly). Five-stars, this was insanely good. - Plain parantha (since it's not spicy, good for the kiddo) good but naturally nowhere near as flavorful as the former. - Veggie Samosas (potato, Indian spices melded together, stuffed into a shell and fried) Good but heavy, one was delicious, one was super greasy. -Garlic Naan -- fantastic naan, slightly buttery, piping hot and full of flavor. -Vegetarian korma -- a curry dish that's not as heavy as others, a bit sweet and spicy. I loved the consistency and spice level, but it was a notch sweeter than I like. It did not come with rice like my go-to spots, which isn't a big deal but just worth mentioning. The inside of the spot isn't much, and I like it that way. I'm selling it a bit short, there is a nice selection of Indian groceries and a market component. However for us, the focus was on the food, and they really shine there. *I also noticed someone picking up their to-go order from a drive-thru which I had no idea existed here. I'm not sure the details exactly, so don't quote me on this, but it does appear to be a thing! Also, they have outdoor tables by the front door. This is a perfect hole in the wall to grab some midday quick Indian lunch. We got the platter which comes with a serving of rice and 3 options for curries. I got the butter chicken and chicken curry and they were on point. You also get a side of chapati or roti as well. Don't think twice if you're in mood for a simple Indian lunch. They also have a drive thru and pick up options. The staff are very friendly and felt the Punjabi ambience in house. My first thought was "wow they have a very limited menu here." But since this place was recommended by a good friend I figure I better give them a shot. I'm so glad I did. The food was so delicious and from my understanding the reason they have a limited menu is because they want to keep everything fresh My second thought was "Wow there's a grocery store inside this restaurant." They have really good curry and Indian food! This restaurant is combined with the grocery store, so in the shop, you will find one side is the front counter and the limited seating area, the behind the cashier counter, it is the kitchen. Another half of the space is occupied by a few isles of groceries, specializes in Indian stuff. There is no fancy decorations, everything in the shop is down to earth and practical. The price is comparable to other Indian restaurant, considering I ordered two entree combo in a takeout box which comes with two curries of my choice (masala chicken and butternut chicken), rice and naan of my choice (garlic naan) for $18 after tax. I do love their curries, it was really tasty and I highly recommend trying this place if you haven't visited it. But for myself, considering the price for the value, I would get it only when I happen to be around and happen to be hungry for Indian food. read more

We ordered carryout here for dinner one evening. The restaurant is a family run place with a counter from which you pick up dishes. There were some families eating outside when we arrived and it seemed well frequented by customers. This place gets rave reviews and I understand why - the flavors of their dishes are great. We ordered carry out Chicken Korma, Butter chicken, butter paneer, dahl makhani, vegetable korma and a lot of naan. The pluses and minuses we encountered: They forgot to give us one dish in our order and we were too far away by the time we discovered it to go back. The portions were really large and we had a lot left over after we ate - plenty for another full meal. Besides the missing dish, everything was lukewarm in temp and could have been much hotter. No fancy facade or big advert budget. No 200 item menu spanning a dozen different regions. No short cuts. No questionable buffet. This is how Grandma did it back in the village. Back in KC "to see about a girl" and we both decided to sample some of the local desi cuisine. Shagan's is a family business with such authentic food that I repeatedly told my dinner companion that I felt like I was back in India. Homesickness? GONE! All Indian food is not equal and sadly, most in the U.S. is commercialized and packed with artificial ingredients. But we both loved Shagan's homestyle-Punjabi food. Everything tasted like it was made in-house .... Alhamdulillah. The paneer, rotis, parathas, and potato-stuffed parantha were exquisite, but so were the dal tadka, vegetable korma, dahi (curd), and jeera rice. I'll be honest, I live pretty close to this place, love Indian food, read the great reviews, but was always drawn away from its very unassuming location and size by nearby larger, more familiar restaurants of various fare. I finally went there today, and it was amazing. Truly the one of the best if not THE best tasting Indian food I've had in KC. The value is great, portions are very generous. I had their 3 entree choice platter (their main offering - select from their 10ish entree options) that comes with your pick of bread (various naan, roti) and rice. I also had a samosa that was fantastic in all the same ways (yes, I'm stuffed). Drinks are bottles from the grocery area coolers. We're giving 2 stars because our first experience at Shagan's was AMAZING and truly worthy of 5 stars. Tonight's dinner had us questioning if the restaurant was under different ownership. :( All of our dishes (2 curry chickens and one butter chicken, all 8oz portions) were super watery -- as if they were made with water and not cream or milk. Even after we put it over rice, still watery. Not sure why it's so inconsistent...but certainly disappointing. Sigh. read more

I came in here for lunch on a Saturday after a hair apt. I'm not super familiar with Indian food, but the owner was so helpful and nice In helping me pick my meal. I chose the butter Chicken and chicken tika masala. The butter chicken by far was my favorite! It had a Spicey sweeter flavor and the masala I think I would describe as more savory. No clue what type of bread they serve is called, but they make it fresh to order......soooooooo goood! The menu is simple, but who cares when what you serve is awesome! I don't know why I haven't heard about Shagan's prior to today, but I'm happy I've finally discovered this place. I was having a craving for Indian food, so a quick search on my KC Eats page mentioned Shagan's, so off we went in search of what we hoped would be good Indian food. Upon walking in, you notice that there is a small grocery section on the right and you order at the counter to the left. It's not fancy but the food was fabulous. We had the 2-entree combo along with a samosa: you get to choose your entrees and the type of bread you would like! I ordered butter chicken and vegetable korma, both so very good! Everything tasted delicious and homemade including the vegetable samosa. No, there's no buffet, but please stop in at Shagan's next time you are looking for some great Indian food! read more

Okayyyy when you see literally all 5 star reviews for this place, it makes a person wonder if it lives up to the hype. YES IT DOES. They have a small menu but I like that. I really love how everything really does taste homemade. My favorite stuff to order is their butter chicken and samosas. Omg their samosas are WOW. They take time to make but I will wait as long as they want me to wait for those delicious fried filled spiced potatoes lol. I really like how I don't feel bloated after eating this food. It's a good comfortable fullness after completing the meal. I will say sometimes I feel like their meat curries and veggie curries use the same curry but I don't know cause I ain't the cook. I still eat it though cause it's not bad. It's just an observation. And sometimes there is a lot of oil on top of the curry. Like it needs to be mixed in or I'll scoop it out if it's too much. But another observation. I will still eat anything from this place. I like their bread a lot too. I always get their roti cause it's so common to see naan on a menu so I tried all their breads to compare. Roti is thinner and I just like it. They have a drive thru so that is convenient! I'm a lover of Indian food but finding good dairy free vegetarian Curry's can be boring. A lot of Indian restaurants just have daal that I'm able to eat but I was pleasantly surprised by Shagan's. The owner was incredibly friendly and explained what I was able to eat and the service was very quick. I had a fabulous lunch that included a Green lentil daal curry and vegetable curry that was fantastic. I will definitely be back to get some more. read more
