Had a really nice meal here for Father's Day, first time in. Appreciated the nice sized menu with some options beyond the usual Indian fare. The chicken korma and lababdar were both excellent. Really enjoyed the homemade naan--tried the rosemary version which was tasty. The veggie pakora was a bit heavy on the breading and light on the chutney, but it included cauliflower and eggplant which was nice to have the variety. Our first time there was wonderful. Located in a strip center, there was plenty of parking. The inside has a cheery decor. We were promptly greeted and seated. The hostess suggested a booth with a large table to hold the many dishes they would bring. The menu has a wide selection and making our choices was difficult. The chai tea comes unsweetened, which is my preference, but they have sugar available at the table. The two of us shared three entrees, and there was plenty left over. When I'm in the mood for Indian food, Spice N Rice is my go to spot. I used to get it delivered quite a bit in the winter. A nice chicken Curry with their fluffy Naan, basmati rice and a Mango Lassi is my usual order. Although, so many other items look fantastic as well. I've been getting it as take out more recently because the restaurant is conveniently located where I can do my other shopping nearby and pick up my order when I'm finished. I love their food, I love their service and I love their modesty. They are unreasonably modest about their Samosa Chaat. Everytime I order one they hit me with the "Are you sure? This will not taste as good as you're used to." I get it as a person from the subcontinent with a very distinct palate I can be quite intimidating as a customer. But their Samosa Chaat is not that bad. Sure, Its not amazing like the samosa chaat I had in Virginia but its good in its own way. But on chance you are a bigger critic than I am, I wont recommend the Samosa Chaat for you, the reader of this review. Instead I will recommend you get the Chicken 65, which is amazing and the will have you coming back. And the Paneer Masala if you are vegetarian. So delicious!! They kept the chai tea flowing the entire meal, plus a to-go cup, which helped with the few spicy dishes we got (like the spicy cauliflower appetizer!) I wanted to try the classic Chicken Biryani, which was truly delicious, but the boiled egg topping was definitely overdone and I was surprised to learn that the rice was colored with food coloring... who knew?? Spice n Rice has become our new go-to for Indian food! We formerly frequented a place down the road, but their hours and online checkout has become customer-unfriendly of late, so that necessitated finding a new and improved option! Enter Spice n Rice! First off, they have an easy-to-use online menu and ordering system! We've begun ordering carryout a lot more lately, so this was key. Second, they have a GREAT, central-Overland Park location! We ordered a bunch of our normal go-to's...and yes, they have it all! I arrived at the agreed upon time, and everything was bagged and ready for pickup! Got it home, and......YUUUMMMMMMMMMM!!! I have had mixed results, nothing bad, just trying different things, some are great while others miss. Despite other reviews mentioning this I decided to try the chicken tika masala, spice level mild. Other folks posting are definitely right. It tastes like a creamy tomato sauce with no seasoning. The lamb kabob is a bit spicey, and sometimes has far too much breading. The chicken samosas are fantastic. The takeout side is kind of funny, with walls blocking your view of the kitcen and anywhere else. There's just enough space for a smiling guy to poke his head out when the door dings. The location is nice, restaurant is spacious and clean and the staff is attentive. I ordered pretty basic with the chicken Marsala. I ordered the least spicy and it honestly tasted like tomato sauce with sour cream mixed in it. No flavor at all, very bland. My friend ordered something that was supposed to be very spicy and I tried his and it did have a kick, but lacked flavor. Even the garlic naan bread that I ordered was lacking flavor. I am so happy I stumbled into this place. I was right next door to Whole Foods (who had very little options for lunch) so I walked down the shopping center and there was this Indian place - I thought I might as well try it. Everything is extremely clean (came during COVID times). The staff was quiet, but so nice and attentive. They showed me the menu for lunch specials and offered to make it gluten free (this is important for any of you with food allergies!). I was impressed with that alone. The food was amazing. The special was butter chicken and curry chicken, two of my favorite Indian dishes. Both were exceptional. The rice pudding for dessert is my favorite, because I'm simple and I love dessert :). Finally, a vindaloo that is actually spicy, when I choose the spicy option. Totally forgot my wallet and was running so late for work, so I opted to Postmates since Apple lau was an option. Order arrived 20 minutes early, pipping hot, and shrink wrapped to avoid spillage. I opted for the spicy chicken vindaloo, basmati rice, and a side of m raita. My spice pallet is pretty strong, and spicy had a great balance of spices, heat, and taste. They give you a crap ton of rice to sop up all the sauce. The raita, I didn't prefer. It was sweet. In supporting local, I ordered on the phone to grab dinner. I ordered Tikka masala and chicken briyanni. They give you the option if you want bone in or not which is nice. My order went through and I picked it up approx 25 min. Everything was a smooth transaction and they take COVID seriously as I saw them taking precautions and making sure customers were also following precautions. When I got home, they didn't get my naan order, but also didn't charge me for it and they accidentally gave me bone in vs no bone (which is what I asked for). The night host was very friendly and funny. We are plant based/vegan so it was nice to see they had their vegan things marked on their menu, including gluten free items marked! We got some vegetable samosas, which were homemade and the sauces were amazing! So much flavor! I got the vegan okra and my husband got the mixed vegetable one and we got a side of garlic naan. All of it was seasoned perfectly, the spice levels were spicy and amazing (you can pick the spice level). So COME HERE, it is so delicious!!! I hear they have a buffet 11am-3pm everyday so we will definitely be back to check that out. I have only recently become introduced to Indian foods few years ago and I have now had home cooked meals and tried nearly every Indian restaurant in the KC metro area. I saw some negative reviews so I was nervous and I usually stick with Rauchi because their food have blown me away each and every time. However, I wanted to try and support somewhere new and found Spice N Rice. I got the chicken vindaloo extra spicy with garlic naan and samsosa with mint sauce. Everything was flavorful and extremely well made. The mint sauce was how I like it and they didn't tone down the spice at all. I always ask for it to be as spicy as a restaurant will make it so when somewhere actually impressed me that is a guaranteed repeat customer on my end. My dine-in weekday lunch buffet experience ($11.99 Mon-Fri, $13.99 including seafood items Sat-Sun) was stellar. The competitive buffet price included a good selection of 12 vegetarian (including two soups), seven non-vegetarian (including chicken, goat, and beef entrees), two rice, six dessert items, and chai tea, along with mango lassi and fresh naan at the table. Buffet items were well organized (veg buffet left, non-veg buffet right, and dessert buffet center) and well labeled. I liked the use of healthy ingredients, without artificial colorings or flavorings. Some buffet items rotated daily. Entree items generally had a mild spice level, except for a few entrees marked "spicy", which had a nice medium heat level. Buffet items were held at the proper temperature with induction heat plates, and kept well-stocked. Everything I tried was flavorful and delicious, especially the papdi chaat (see Dawn C.'s review for the tasty details), the chicken tikka masala, the spicy chicken jalfrezi, the rice pudding, and the carrot halwa dessert (tasted like warm, creamy carrot cake). The plate removal service was cheerful and quick, while the friendly and helpful owner was actively involved in making sure diners had a great experience. This business moved two years ago (mid 2017) from a smaller, fast, casual space next door (where carry out orders are now picked up) to this nicer, more upscale space (so the older interior pictures are no longer representative). I found the new space to be clean and nice, with pleasant Indian music, and an event space with a TV. I look forward to my next visit! read more

This is (at least right now) my favorite restaurant in JoCo. I usually get the vegetable pakora to start, and then either biryani or a curry with naan. The boneless chicken biryani is great if you like meat, but there are other options as well. You can mix and match styles of curry with your chosen protein. The garlic naan is my favorite of the naan choices. The korma and vindaloo have been my favorite sauce choices so far. The service is always great. It's generally either the same young man or young woman when I am there, and they are always friendly and helpful. The place has it all: delicious food, classy music, modern and meticulous dining room, fancy presentation, a great location and healthy! Did I mention my waiter, Lucus, was helpful and friendly. Gosh I love this place! Today I fell in love all over again with something called Papdi chaat. Chickpeas and crispy discs layered with that delicious green sauce, sour cream, onions, cheese and cilantro. Think Indian nachos.. I did! Super craveable! I decided to take out a best friend and her newly married husband out for lunch as a wedding gift, part I. We both loved Indian cuisine and finding one open on a Sunday afternoon around 2pm is tough. Thankful for yelp, as always. We found one that was nearby my hotel in Overland Park that was open on a Sunday till 10pm. We found Spice N Rice. It was the perfect place, since we ended up at the Cheesecake Factory next door for dessert afterwards. With that said, we arrived here on a Sunday afternoon around 2:15pm. The restaurant space itself was not large, but intimate enough to be cozy and casual. It was quiet for a Sunday afternoon and perfect for a late lunch. The service here was friendly and casual, while professional as well. The server checked up on us twice in between the ordering and the billing. Everything on the menu was amazing, as I am a fan of Indian cuisine. The only drawback (generally speaking) is that Indian cuisine from restaurants can be cost prohibitive, so it was a treat for me to be able to have such a luxury when I travel or special occasions. We spent about a good hour here before making our way to the Cheesecake Factory. At this restaurant, I decided to try - for the first time ever - chaat, an appetizer that I didn't know about. Everything was so good though! I ended up boxing that for dinner later that evening and ordered an extra order of rice to complete that meal. For lunch though, I had lamb curry with rice (spicy) and a side order of garlic naan. My friend has ordered the naan with rosemary on it (among other dishes) and it was pleasantly delicious. I've forgotten what my friends had ordered but took photos of it during my time here. The overall experience here at Spice N Rice Indian restaurant was quite good, delicious, and definitely hit the spot after running 13.1 miles on the Indian creek trail earlier that day in the Corporate Woods. Salt and Rice is located at 6537 W 119th Street in Overland Park, Kansas. They accept major credit cards, which is always a good thing, as well as cash. They are apart of a small strip mall, so parking here can be an issue during peak meal / shopping times. Best bet would be to get here early before the rush to secure the best parking spot available. Not sure about Kansas City's public transportation options, but you can be sure that renting a private vehicle or uber and lyft can be very useful too. Any method would work really. Just get here! For myself though, I enjoyed spending my time here at Spice N Rice with my best friend and her newly married husband. I usually have my favorites, settling on either the lamb or goat curry. I always love the rice that is served with Indian cuisine, very different than the rice that is served in Chinese restaurants or in Japanese sushi - in taste and texture. The lamb curry was delicious and delightful, as usual. The naan was a simplistic delicious pleasure that often compliments my meal. I could eat that as a snack all day long. For the most part though, it was great to find an Indian restaurant that is open on Sunday in Overland Park, KS that didn't close by 3pm when you wanted a late lunch.
