The mujadara was very yummy. A little oily but that's a dish I love and you can't find it everywhere. The falafel was tasty too, although the individual balls came without any tahina, so I imagine it would taste better a little moister. Overall, the patio was a great surprise, especially when you think that the outside seating is just the tables in the front. And my dish was yummy.

One thing however that did make me nervous about the quality here is that halal foods in Waterbury have so far been complete misses if my past reviews are to be believed. This was also my first time using Yelp to have food delivered. So let me first talk about how long it took from the time I ordered to the time I had my food delivered. The service was pretty fast. On my receipt, my order was placed at 9:33 PM. Initially, Yelp estimated my delivery time to be between 10:12 - 10:32. As of this point in my typing of this review, it is 10:11. When my order was received and confirmed to be in the works, the delivery time changed from 10:05 - 10:25. It actually took less time than that for my food to arrive! How do I know this, you might ask? At 9:56, I had decided to head downstairs from my apartment to check on my order and wait for the delivery driver. Little did I know, it had already arrived! So far, off to a great start! When I got back up to begin my dinner, I took photos first just to have something for my review tonight. I will say that the prices are actually very reasonable, but if you really want to save money, go to the restaurant and pick up the order yourself. I tipped $6.55, so my total for the delivery was $28.88. On my receipt, the total for the order itself was $16.63. If I do order from them again, I will make sure I go at a time that is not so close to closing. Onto the food. For the $16.63, it's not a bad deal. I got the cheesesteak combo, and I will say that the cheesesteak was definitely a decent sandwich. The meat by itself was seasoned well and was flavorful. When I bit into the sandwich, the cheese and mayo were the tastes that prevailed tonight. I do definitely prefer the cheesesteaks I have cooked up on my own, but this does hold its own. If I had been the one coming up with this on the menu though, I would definitely have this only have the cheese, the steak, and the onions. But still, I will say for its price you can do far worse. As for the fries, they were okay. They weren't very crispy, but you can definitely taste some pepper with this one. That pepper seasoning kept these from being bland. The food overall would be anywhere from a 3 to a 3 and a half. That 4th star I am going to award is because of how fast I got my food delivered as well as the reasonable pricing.

Jamshed worked in the fishing industry as a young man, but dreamed of working in the restaurant business. He came to the United States in 1989 and worked for a vending machine business. He finally entered the food industry in 2000 when he started "Mughali Foods": a food cart that prepared Indian and Pakistani food. In 2003, Jamshed became the owner of Noor Mahal, an Indian restaurant in Orange, but continued to run the food cart. He sold the restaurant three years later to focus exclusively on the food cart operation. He later dubbed it "Ali Baba's Fusion" and shifted the menu to halal Middle Eastern cuisine. At one point, Jamshed even had six Ali Baba food carts operating around New Haven. The Kalids opened a brick & mortar location in Hamden in 2014. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2020, the couple cut down their food cart division to a single cart and put most of the focus on the brick & mortar location which was rebranded as "Ali Baba's Kitchen". The menu was also augmented to focus on healthier food options. A second location opened in North Haven in 2025. My wife and I recently sampled Ali Baba's delicious cuisine for the first time. Although I had heard several great things about them for a few years, I never got around to stopping in. While my wife was recovering from a minor surgical procedure at Yale-New Haven Hospital, I ventured to nearby Cedar Street in search of a cheap lunch. Located adjacent to the hospital, the street features a menagerie of food carts that are often visited by hospital visitors and staff. When I saw (and smelled) Ali Baba's food cart, my decision had been made. I ordered the "Mixed Combo" (grilled beef gyro and lemon chicken strips, sautéed onions, rice) and it was phenomenal. A week later, once my wife was home, I decided to head to the brick & mortar location to get takeout. Once again I ordered the "Mixed Combo", my wife ordered the "Side Dishers Bowl" (chicken biryani with ginger chicken and falafel topped with lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes, black olives, pickled onions, tamarind sauce, ABK sauce), and we shared sides of "Samosas" (with tamarind sauce and chana masala) and "Hummus" (with pita bread pieces). We think that the food at Ali Baba's is sensational and we plan to order from them again and again!
