Starting with the food, it was great overall. The appetizers might've been a little over-fried, but everything else really stood out. The tikka masala leaned more on bold spices than creaminess, which I actually enjoyed. The rice, garlic naan, mango lassi, and gulab jamun were all excellent. Service was another highlight; the staff were welcoming, attentive, and easy to talk to. On the cleanliness side, the concern comes from the bathroom and what it might reflect about the rest of the restaurant. I didn't take a photo of the food, but I did take one of the bathroom sink, and it more or less speaks for itself. I'd like to think it was just a one-off issue, which is why I'd still recommend the place. That said, what you see out front can sometimes hint at what's going on behind the scenes. read more

Impressive Indian restaurant stuck away in a shopping center next to a Walmart. Not exactly where you would expect a fine dining experience but Shahi delivered quite a tasty and filling Sunday lunch. Greeted promptly and fussed over appropriately. It's white table cloth place with some overtures to a classy experience. The garlic naan is highly recommended as is the red curry shrimp with peppers and onions. A bit of heat with a rich curry--that's why you have to get the naan. You don't want to leave any sauce behind! My better half had a chicken/spinach dish which she raved about. The chicken was so tender. Reasonable prices considering the quality. Impressive. read more

Been here a handful of times on my trips to the North. Always stop here for a meal. While the service is so-so, the food is amazing! The best Indian food I've had in the Midwest. I've tried a variety of dishes here over the course of my semi-annual stops and never been disappointed. The Malai Kofta was perfect; and the kofta was just the perfect texture. Naan was made fresh and was so soft. Word of caution - when asking for spice level to be turned up, the heat can be a bit much if you are not used to it. Or maybe I am just weak. read more

Wow, we loved this dinner. walking distance from our hotel--in a strip mall. Inside is very nice, clean, excellent service. The food: samosas were excellent, not greasy, good amount of delicious filling. Naan and rice were spot on. Chicken tika masala delicious, paneer saag may be the best I've ever had. The stand out was the lamb vindaloo. It was an impressive amount of lamb and spiced just right--if you order it mild it is actually mild to my wife's delight and unlike most orders of lamb vindaloo this order was large enough for everyone to actually get some lamb!. The tandoori ckn was also excellent; succulent and moist with tasty grilled onions. We ate leftovers for 2 days. Prices are excellent especially considering the size of the portions. Went here on Mother's Day with a travel-friend, and we were so pleasantly surprised! The restaurant is in a rather shabby strip mall, but the interior of the restaurant was very well appointed and understated. The waitstaff recommended the non-vegetarian dinner for two, so we could have the largest variety for the price. It came with a generous number of appetizers, 2 main dishes, rice, naan, tea, a mango drink that was to die for, and a dessert. We chose lamb curry and chicken tikka masala. It was so much food, we took half back to our hotel and had it for dinner the next night too! Every dish was excellent! We're from California, so we have many excellent Indian restaurants everywhere, and my friend is of Indian heritage, so our expectations were a bit guarded. This place had great service and my waitress was very nice. She checked up on my friends and I to make sure we were doing okay, refilled our waters, and gave us extra rice when we asked. I got the korma, which is a yellow creamy curry with cashews, almonds, coconut, and raisins. I could definitely taste the coconut in it which was very yummy. I got it mild, which is the lowest spice level and it wasn't spicy at all. You can build up your spice level depending on your preference. I don't really like raisins but it was a good touch to the curry since it made it a little sweet. I also ordered the garlic naan, which was very good! I came here with 2 other friends but they only serve one bowl of rice at a time. I would recommend this place out! It seems like they have very authentic Indian food! read more

I have been to 100s of Indian restaurants (from Manhattan to San Diego and in between) and I can with confidence rank Shahi Palace at the bottom of the list, the very bottom, and here is why: -KRAHI (the misspelled Karahi) MASALA: This is a dish that is usually made with roasted chicken in a clay oven (it is the red/tikka chicken that we all know). Don't take my word for it, here is Shahi's own description "Marinated boneless meat rosted (they misspelled roasted) in oven & sauteed in ....etc". Now, I want you to take a look at the pictures I took (had to actually suck out the sauce from around them to show how the chicken actually looks). Does this chicken look to you like it is roasted? I will help you out, NO, it doesn't look roasted because it is NOT roasted. This chicken is likely boiled, cut and then thrown in some sauce. The chicken tasted terrible, and had a rubbery texture. -SHAHI COMBINATION APP: This is basically a combo dish of pakora and a samosa. The pakora was a combo of chicken, fish, vegetable ball and paneer/cheese. The chicken was so dry and rough, the fish had an awful taste that I actually spit it out, the vegetable ball was so dry and tasteless that I couldn't have any more than one bite, the paneer was ok, and I then (maybe I had enough?) decided not to touch the samosa. Plain naan: It was under-proofed. I am known for having a high tolerance for food (ie, I can stomach everything) and I almost never write a poor review but this food is just terrible. read more

We were in town for the night on our way south to avoid winter. It wasn't late, but when we got to the hotel, neither of us felt like going out. I stumbled across Shahi looking for food delivery --what a treat! We went with the basics, garlic naan, chicken korma (med) and butter chicken (mild). All were delivered (DD) well packed and piping hot and well inside of an hour. The medium spice on the korma was perfect. Really warm bordering on the low side of hot but not at all burning. Both dishes had a good amount of protein, definitely not skimpy. The sauce was so good I almost ate my weight in naan trying to scoop it all up. This was a very pleasant surprise. I have no idea how the table service or ambiance is, but the food was really solid. I wish we had tried a few more -- pakora, dal mahkani, saag paneer -- I wonder if they are open for breakfast? Tasty food! We had Chicken tikki masala and vegetable Korma. Both had good flavor. We were there during lunchtime, and the specials came with soup or salad. We had one of each. We were given a heads up that the salad was a chickpea salad, but was still surprised when it came out. It was really good! It's literally chickpeas tossed with a flavorful, sweet vinaigrette type sauce and small bits of onion and tomato. I'm only overly mentioning all this because I overheard a lady sitting near us complain without even trying it when it was served. She sent it back saying it didn't have leaves and wasn't a salad (has she never seen cruciferous or Italian bean salad... sheltered/ignorant lady!) Anyway, the staff was friendly and attentive. I don't know how Sioux City was so lucky to get such a high quality Indian restaurant, but Shahi Palace is so good that it gives the Indian restaurants in Chicago a run for their money. You can order your entree cooked as mild, medium, or hot, and this place means business when it comes to heat. I love a good kick in my food, but I stick to their medium level because that's already plenty hot for me. Most of the time, anyway. Sometimes the medium comes out a bit more mild, other times it's hot enough that I'm reaching for my drink every couple of minutes. Regardless, if you're sensitive to heat, definitely get the mild. If you love to make your mouth burn, however, you'll probably be delighted by their hottest option. The lunch menu is a fantastic value. The choices are pretty limited, but the price is under ten bucks a person and it comes with a chickpea salad, a small side dish (which changes from visit to visit, but has always been vegetarian so far), and of course a big bowl of rice for soaking up the entree's tasty sauce. The prices go up by a fair amount at night, but the dinner menu has a huge variety to make up for it and very generous portions even if it's lacking in the side dishes. For those it's relevant to, this is probably one of the more vegetarian-friendly restaurants in the area. There are many entrees that feature paneer (cheese), chana (chickpeas), or veggies as the main ingredient instead of meat. The servings look small to my untrained eye, but I never leave hungry. In fact, more often than not, I'm beyond stuffed, especially if someone in my party got the bright idea to order a side of naan. The naan is delicious, by the way, both in plain and garlic variety, so it's hard to balk at ordering some, but my stomach is plenty full from my entree without the naan's help! Sometimes the food takes a little while to cook, but most of the time the service is quite quick and always courteous. The atmosphere is cozy, just fancy enough to feel like a nice outing, but not so fancy that you need to dress up. If you're new to Indian food and not sure what to try, the chicken tikka masala dish is a pretty common favorite, along with the butter chicken. My default order is the saag or palak, which is a dish with a thick and creamy spinach sauce, but I'm also a fan of the dal. If you like Indian food or are an adventurous eater wanting to expand your cuisine horizons, I can't recommend Shahi Palace enough. read more

Shahi Palace is consistently one of the better dining options in Sioux City! The dining area is clean, and the staff members are efficient and competent. With that established, let's talk about the food! We have ordered to-go and/or dined in at least once every two months for the past two years...to-go orders during COVID were always piping hot and accurate. Yes, the prices are higher than a run-of-the-mill chain restaurant, and worth every penny! Chicken Madras and Vindaloo (lamb or shrimp) are family favorites, and we choose the medium or spicy (hot) level of heat. I also really like their Saag (chicken or potato). For the more tender tastebuds out there, opt for their mild spice level. Garlic naan is served hot from the tandoor with fresh cilantro (coriander leaves), so if you don't like cilantro, ask their awesome wait staff to leave it off. The samosas are okay. Meals come with rice, which is light and well prepared! One small area upon which they can improve, and this is truly a personal preference: please don't be afraid to bump up the spicy (bring the pain) at the medium spice level. Just post a little warning for the uninitiated that Indian cuisine at a "10" or a spicy level is hot. (And yes, we know that even then it's not really that hot.) Most folks know to self limit, which is why I order at the medium level. So, if you're seeking some culinary adventure, give into deliciousness and treat yourself to some Indian food!
