Update! After my initial review, I've been back to WS quite a few times to upkeep the cut. But because it was fairly far for me (it took me 1.5 hrs to get there from where I live) I started to look for other places closer to me. And then I decided to grow out my hair so I can donate it so that's years of not really cutting it and only getting trims nearby. Finally, my hair has reached a length that I can donate and I remembered WS. I loved the bob that Karina gave me so I called to try to get an appt with her. I called to find out she doensn't work there anymore, but I made an appt anyway, and it was with Ami. And let me tell youuuuu. I am so happy with my cut. I knew I had to go somewhere I really trusted and liked for a good, stylish short cut. I was going from waist-length long hair to a pixie. I wanted it to look feminine still, and definitely not like a Karen cut, or a Chelsea cut (we all know what those look like). I also think it is important to have a specific idea of what you want the hair to look like (especially if you're picky, and why shouldn't you be??) AND what you DON'T want to look like. But also have realistic expectations based on your face shape/hair texture/hair density. A lot of the picutures I showed are of models for smaller faces and their hair a lot thicker than what I have, so it'll be silly to expect my final result to look JUST like those models. Purchased a Lifebooker voucher and did extensive research on this place, coming to the conclusion that Karina could do the job well. After booking my appointment and then shifting it a few times the day of, I walked in feeling like I'd already loved this place for being so accommodating and friendly over the phone. The place itself was kind of empty, but the people there, especially Karina as requested, were quick with a smile. I sat down with Karina, who was so complimentary and sweet, so the confidence was building to the expectation of a fantastic haircut and possibly a new go-to, after giving myself haircuts for the past 23 years. I showed her a photo of Jenna Dewan-Tatum at the Golden Globes with her lobbed hair, and declared that I wanted to cut my hair short. "Like, Kim Kardashian-short". Karina exclaimed that that was exactly the length she envisioned for me, and I was thrilled that we were on the same wavelength. She told me that she'd cut layers into my hair, too, to add more volume to my mane. Okay. After around twenty minutes, I was presented with the finished product, and played straight into a cliche: "Oh. Thank you. You say it'll look better once the blowout wears off and I style it myself? Alright then." I tipped much more than I should have, considering this was an atrocious haircut and I walked out the salon looking like a 33-year-old Asian housewife with two kids and a mortgage from Wisconsin. Perhaps most tellingly, with my previous long hair and natural waves, I get catcalled every time I'm in the downtown area. Passed by construction workers. Bangers. Cooks on a smoking break. Not a peep from any of them. (Totally against catcalling as a general principle, but I'm using this as an example of how I'm usually perceived). I'm incredibly unhappy because I now look like a dumpy, stereotypical unemployed college grad. Thankfully, I paid peanuts for the Lifebooker deal and would definitely have broken down in tears had I paid the full price of the haircut I received. read more

I tried this place because it is close to my apartment and got very good reviews. Unfortunately, it seems the good reviews are for haircuts and NOT hair color/highlights. I went here for highlights and my hair ended up orange. I walked out looking like the time I tried sun-in when I was 12 years old (see picture). My hairstylist could tell I was not happy but suggested I let it settle in for a week and look at it in the natural light. If I still wasn't happy she said I could come back and she would fix it. I came back a couple days later to have it fixed, which clearly was a mistake. My hair went from orange to borderline platinum. I ended up going to another salon and paying $200 to have it fixed. read more

Got a Lifebooker Loot deal for an "organic keratin treatment" for $99. This was NOT like a keratin treatment, let alone "organic." I've gotten multiple keratin treatments before (Brazilian Blowout, Coppola Keratin, etc.) and I've never once had anyone spray a solution that looked like leave-in conditioner on my hair. The woman doing my hair spoke very little English and when I'd ask questions, the owner would come over and answer them. I asked what the treatment is made of and what makes it organic--he gave me some roundabout answer that it's "just better for your hair and doesn't damage it." My hair looked fine when I left, but it felt like they just sprayed my hair with a solution, blew my hair out and flatironed it. Sure enough, after the first wash, my hair was pretty much back to normal. The treatment didn't have that same super-smooth keratin treatment feeling that lasts for weeks or even months after--and I was using a high-end keratin shampoo religiously. Lesson learned: do your research on keratin treatments and don't fall for selling words like "organic." I'm sticking with formaldehyde-free Coppola Keratin treatments from now on only. read more

Karina did my hair- the color came out fabulous and very natural looking, the cut was even better. She spent so much time on my hair, and put in so much more effort than I usually receive while getting my hair done- I hope my tip accurately reflected the great job she did! The place is obviously a little outdated, there is a blinking neon sign in the front window if my memory serves me correctly- but WHO CARES! After the great job Karina did, I'll be back for sure... DO NOT go here. The nice reviews were written at the request of the staff, not out of a genuinely good experience. I had a Groupon now deal and left in a good mood (after being given a glass of wine at the salon which in itself is a bad sign). But this morning when I woke up and looked in the mirror I realized what a huge mistake I had made. I asked for very natural subtle partial highlights. I left with white blonde hair that was over bleached on just the right side. Now I need to spend even more money to correct it. read more

Made an appointment with a groupon for a haircut and partial highlights after reading the good reviews on here. I explained to Yanna that I wanted a longer bob above my shoulders and very subtle lighter brown highlights just around my face and through the ends -- I have very dark hair and just wanted a little brightening up for spring, nothing obvious. While she began doing the highlights, it seemed like she was doing a lot, so I spoke up, reminding her that I only wanted them around my face. She only replied, "I know what you want," so I sat back and let her do her job. When it was done, sure enough, the highlights were pretty terrible, bright orange skunk lines all around my head. I was also informed that if I wanted brown highlights and not blonde ones, I would have to pay $30 extra on top of the $90 I had paid for the groupon, which hadn't been in the fine print so that was a nasty surprise. As for the cut, she wouldn't cut my hair as short as I asked her to, so the finished product, while fine, was nothing like what I went there for. I'm sure I could've pushed it, but her disapproving comments and facial expressions made me uncomfortable, so gave up. When I expressed my thoughts about the highlights, she didn't say anything other than, no, I was wrong, they weren't orange or obvious stripes. It didn't seem to matter what I had asked for, so I sucked it up, paid, and bought a box of drugstore dye on the way home. Also, a small detail in the grand scheme of the terrible dye job, but: getting shampooed was way more painful than it should've been -- I don't think I've ever been yanked around like that at a salon before. Was looking to do something pretty drastic and different with my hair (side sweep undercut). Chose WS because of the proximity to my work, easy walk during lunch to get a cut. I think Steve (the owner) cut my hair. I had some wild ideas and he played along and got into it. You can really see the effort he takes into his craft, he took quite some time to get my hair to where it needed to go; I'm not one to complain about a perfectionist if they're the ones servicing me. In the end the results were amazing, he was pretty darn impressed himself because he openly admitted that the cut was a difficult one. So YES, you can expect high quality service without having to empty your wallet. i came here with a groupon for a partial highlight, cut & blowout. HEADS UP LADIES- if you have hair that is passed your shoulders, be ready to buck up an additional $20. i did not see this initially on the groupon deal, but only when i got to the voucher page. my hair is so dead straight and easy to work with i hoped they cut me some slack, but nope. my appt was with yanna. she was very sweet and took her time during our consultation. i've had ombre/ balyage for the last few months so my hair was primarily my natural brown shade. the highlights came out a bit blonder/ lighter than i requested, but oh well it works for the upcoming spring season! yanna gave me a great cut, and was able to bring my side swoop bangs back. i had missed these bangs very much. overall the experience was good, my appt started on time and took just under 2 hrs. yanna didn't force me to make small talk, so it was nice to just enjoy some quiet pampering time. read more

It was midnight on a Wednesday, and I had to leave for a weekend trip on Friday. My Thursday itinerary was so packed it would be difficult to schedule in a haircut, especially at a decent place. I Yelped it and found WS Hairstyling...4.5 stars is pretty good, I thought. Turns out they also had pretty early appointments available (10:30am!) as well as online scheduling. Booked an appointment for 10:30am on Thursday, and Karina was great. She was efficient but also did a great job with layers and adding more "bounce" to my hair. She was also very personable, but not to the point of making forced conversation. Will definitely go back! This salon is all the fab without the up-tight attitude. Ami is a confident, knowledgeable hair stylist who knew exactly the problems with my hair and how to fix it. I live in the neighborhood and decided to try to find another place due to the fact that the woman and place where I was cutting my hair was very unprofessional and a chain on 6th Avenue. I just went tonight for my 2nd time, and quite honestly Steve is the best! His crew he has in there is really friendly, and very easy going. So this is one of the first times I've actually made the effort to go online to Yelp to write a Review, but I felt I must give credit where it's due. I bought a Groupon to WS for partial highlights, cut and blow out. I was very nervous because I have brown hair-dyed-blonde which is TRICKY! I have only been going to 'Top salons' in Atlanta and NYC, spending on average anywhere from $250 up to $500 for a full hair process. I had enough of the major money-dropping hair salons to maintain my blonde and tried a Groupon to WS because they had some decent reviews out of all my Groupon options. I went to Karina and... 5 Stars to Karina. She pulled ALL the brassiness out of my hair (something that the guys at Fancy-Plaza-Hotel Salon couldn't do)... gave me gorgeous light highlights, and beautiful, simple, fresh cut. Most of all impressed with the BLONDE color. It was exactly what I was looking for. I feel so much better without all that gold undertone. This is seriously the best my blonde has looked in 2 years! THank you Karina! You did amazing and I WILL most Definitely return!!! I took off 1 Star because perhaps I'm used to the first-class service of nice salons and felt the whole experience could have been a little more service-oriented- Offered a drink (water, coffee, tea, wine) when you first enter; have your coat removed and hung; given a 'robe' before I sat down. I came here for a haircut bc they have an NYU student discount. The hair stylist was a delight throughout the whole cut, however, I left disappointed with my haircut and the experience. I asked them to keep the asymmetry of my haircut (which didn't happen - totally symmetrical now) and just for a bit of a cut (which ended up turning my shoulder length hair into a bob). When I told the hair stylist I didn't like my hair style and explained why, instead of offering to help fix it or offering a discount, he looked at my student ID and said "well, your hair looks better now than it did before. I found that to be the worst part of the whole experience. I left the salon and ended up crying on my walk home. I have to admit that I was going more for a trim and then the stylist showed me a picture and asked me if I want to "sexy" my hair up. So I said yes. This was a Groupon find and I was hoping to find a new go-to place. I scheduled partial highlights/cut/blow out. They had mentioned when I booked that I would have to pay more for the recommended toner, which I understood. Also, I have long, thick (fine- just a lot of it) hair, and expected to be nickeled and dimed for that as well, as I have been before (SOMETIMES it's totally reasonable). Anna took her time and was paid very close attention to detail. At some point, I worried that something may have gotten lost in translation and that she was doing a full highlight, but I figured if it made my very sad hair look it's best, then fine. My appointment took about 3 hours. I left feeling amazing. When I went to check out, bracing for up-charges here and there, they only added the previously-agreed upon $50 for toner, plus $4 tax. They encouraged me to come back, insisting to take care of me again next time. I watched them with other walk-ins, and it seemed like they were always trying to be clear and give people the best discounts where applicable. Twice we had a misunderstanding on the type of highlights I wanted and each time Karina called me to the salon and altered my hair free of charge. I have just left the salon and am in love with my hair. Karina is so lovely and genuinely wants your hair to look perfect.
